Ronaldo delivers but defensive issues remain at Man Utd

Manchester United swept aside Burnley in the only Gameweek 20 match of the day, after Everton v Newcastle United was postponed earlier in the week.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

RANGNICK RINGS THE CHANGES

Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick made six changes to his starting XI in Gameweek 20, in an attempt to get back on track after an underwhelming display at Newcastle United on Monday.

Two of those changes arrived up front, with Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) and Edinson Cavani (£8.4m) replacing the suspended Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m).

“Since we only played three days ago in an away game, when we got back very late, in the middle of the night, we could not train very much. So, we tried to prepare the team in the locker room with regard to what the game-plan should look like. Tonight is all about energy and raising the energy level.

When Edi (Cavani) came on at half-time at Newcastle, not only did he score the equaliser but he also had another two great opportunities. He is in good shape so, for me, it was logical to play him and Cristiano (Ronaldo) together. Yes, the other changes are just due to the fact that we only played three days ago. It is all about energy and fresh legs.” – Ralf Rangnick

As a result, the Red Devils showed more of an attacking edge right from the off, as they went on to score three goals in the first-half for the first time since January and record 18 goal attempts overall.

For Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m), the Portuguese is now into double-figures for Premier League goal involvements, with tonight’s goal and assist taking him to eight and three respectively for the season. That means he is now averaging over five points per match, a team-leading total. Notably, he also avoided his fifth yellow card of the campaign – which would have resulted in a one-match ban – and now has just one more fixture to navigate without a caution before the threshold increases to 10.

Following the 3-1 win, Rangnick remains unbeaten in his five games since replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of November, despite disruptions caused by Covid, with Wolverhampton Wanderers up next on Monday.

“The whole team performance was a lot better, I was pleased with the performances of our wingers. Jadon (Sancho) did well and Mason (Greenwood). Edi (Cavani) and Cristiano (Ronaldo), the work effort was amazing.” – Ralf Rangnick

SHAW IMPRESSES IN FIRST LEAGUE START UNDER RANGNICK

Elsewhere, two further changes saw Diogo Dalot (£4.5m) and Alex Telles (£5.0m) drop to the bench, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£5.1m) and Luke Shaw (£5.0m) starting their first league games under Rangnick.

And Shaw was especially impressive, as he ended the match with 33 final-third touches, 11 crosses (he took five corners) and three created chances, all match-leading totals. It’s also worth noting that he would have been handed an assist for Sancho, had it not gone down as an own-goal.

However, defensive issues remain at United, which will need to be rectified if he is to become a genuine option for our FPL sides.

Against Burnley, it was another nervous display at the back, especially in the first-half when they were carved open a number of times, with the Clarets ending the match with 10 shots which carried an expected goal (xG) value of 1.18.

Burnley’s xG shot map v Manchester United in Gameweek 20

BURNLEY WILL NEED DOUBLES TO TEMPT US

Burnley have games in hand, four in fact, and the timing of those Double Gameweeks will be absolutely key in determining just how much Fantasy interest they are afforded. Without them, the fixtures remain mixed at best:

BURNLEY’S FIXTURES STILL TO BE REARRANGED:
  • Burnley v Tottenham Hotspur (weather)
  • Burnley v Watford (Covid)
  • Aston Villa v Burnley (Covid)
  • Burnley v Everton (Covid)

However, if do see one or two of those previously postponed matches added to Gameweeks 21 or 22, the likes of Matthew Lowton (£4.4m) and Chris Wood (£6.7m) could provide value.

Prior to kick-off, Sean Dyche confirmed that Nick Pope (£5.4m), Kevin Long (£4.0m), Josh Brownhill (£4.3m) and Jay Rodriguez (£5.2m) have all tested positive for Covid-19, while Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m), Ashley Barnes (£5.2m) and Connor Roberts (£4.5m) also missed out through injury.

“We intend on getting on with things. A couple of bodies might come back because of the Covid situation and Maxwell Cornet might get around the squad. We will wait and see.” – Sean Dyche on Covid and injuries

Manchester United XI: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Bailly (Varane 66), Maguire, Shaw, McTominay, Matic, Greenwood (Dalot 81), Sancho, Cavani, Ronaldo (Fred 90+3)

Burnley XI: Hennessey, Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor, McNeil (Pieters 84), Westwood, Cork (Stephens 58), Gudmundsson, Lennon (Vydra 74), Wood

So the PL has ‘gameweeks’ which are used around the world (just not really mentioned in England). Whichever ‘gameweeks’ the PL decides these games are added to will be the FPL GW they are added to, irrespective of when they are added

Less than 10 points - disappointing.
    10-15 points - acceptable.
More than 15 points - successful.

Is the above a fair assessment of the returns expected from the use of the TC chip?

    Cheers

        I mean in general overall.

Most play the TC on a double gameweek so those returns could be from a single/double/triple gw

I think any player getting 15 points or more in a sgw would have an excellent week.

Was thinking more along the lines of multiple games when we are most likely to play the TC chip

      How is 15 points successful?

For a striker that would be 1 assist, I'd say that was poor.

Especially as most will use the chip in a dgw, where a midfielder with 2 blanks and 1 clean sheet would get 15- very poor

      1. MikeS
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

Or by returns do you mean the excess over and above just a normal captain?

        1. House Frey Wedding Planner
          • 5 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

I mean by total score (whether its single/double/triple gw)

      2. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

No, the TC only gets you the player's score once. The other two times is a normal captaincy. 15 points = 15 points scored, not 5 points tripled. 😆

      3. madmafc
        • 2 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

I read it as 15 additional points from the TC chip

        So 45 total captain points

Wouldn't be too bad for a single game week

        1. MikeS
          • 9 Years

Yer that makes more sense if so

    6. Ruth_NZ

I'd go a bit higher. Average in the top 10k in the seasons I have analysed is 14-15. Think about what you'd consider par for a captain. 7-9 maybe? So double that. 18+ is a good return but I have seen plenty get 27+ with it.

All things being considered it's a much stronger chip than the BB.

        • 13 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

27+ for any player is rare, even in DGWs. The only player I can think of last season was Stones and most people did not play the TC chip on him that week. Certainly isn't 'plenty' of people by any stretch of the imagination

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

Sanchez, Kane and I think Aguero all did that in a DGW with plenty of backing. Last season isn't the only reference point.

Yes but those are isolated instances over several years. You could on the flip side give examples of BB scores of 40+.

I’d agree with that. Possibly slightly lower scores are ok imo. You shouldn’t probably have put the total points in parenthesis to be clear haha

      Fewer than 8 (24 total) - disappointing
      9-13 (27-39 total) - acceptable
      14+ (42+) - successful

Ronaldo longer term as can likely keep up to GW 27 then reinvest in Chelsea assets when you sell him

Did well with Bowen this week! What’s latest rank?
      When are you using FH?
Are you looking to chase doubles or longer term defender?
Spurs defender makes sense. Don’t trust many teams right now.

With 2FT my plan is Salah > Son, Bilva > Bowen, Livra > Bavies -4
FH22 then James to Laporte. Obviously a lot can change
Also have ESR and White which are good cover but not every week starters.

Nice transfers… wouldn’t you do James >> Bavies if Reece is confirmed out for a few weeks?

I agree that they are the players to go (plus maybe White, although less pressing). You’ll also need Dennis out after this week.

But I’d say your WC is more valuable than the -8 you’d take to change them up. Could maybe just move Laca on this week (Watkins?) and then maybe a -4 next week to shift a couple of the others?

Team looks in good shape. I would roll the free transfer so you have two next week to restructure the team once Salah has gone to AFCON. Assuming you are not planning to free hit in GW 22.

That’s the issue, I have 2 FHs to use still so could use one in DGW22 (as/when announced).

Equally two FTs and a WC to use in the near future could allow me to target the best DGW fixtures while covid is still ravaging squads and then have FH for the end of season DGWs (there will be plenty of fixtures to catch up on at some stage)

That’s been a tough call. Suppose the alternatives are dier and Livramento, both of whom I’d like to keep a clean sheet. Which one would you go with?

I would bench Livra (and am fwiw).

Last game week was by far my worst of the season. I captained Salah and don't have Son, Kane, Bowen, Foden or Ronaldo. Would you wildcard the following team, or can it be fixed with a hit or two?

    Sanchez
    Alonso | Cancelo* | TAA
    ESR* | Salah | Bernardo | Jota
    Watkins | Antonio | Broja

    Ramsdale | James* | Gallagher* | Livramento*

    1 FT and 2.1 ITB

Wouldn’t be too concerned about Cancelo (certainly wouldn’t want him out of my team!).

However, I’d probably want to shift Alonso, Livra, ESR, James, and maybe Bilva, along with Salah next week. I’d say those five changes (six if you don’t fancy Salah v chelsea) could just about justify a WC

Thanks - agree with your assessment that I need to make 5 or 6 changes. I think I would definitely WC if there was more certainty about the double GWs and less risk of games being called off due to Covid. Will definitely be keeping Cancelo even if he is a slight risk for this weekend!

What to do with this horror show?

    de Gea, Foster
    Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo, James, Davies, White
    Bernado, Son, Jota, Bowen, Martinelli
    Ronaldo, Antonio, Broja

1 free transfer and 1.0 in the bank.

I have 1 FT and plenty in the bank. I really want to get rid of Jesus but have to get rid of Reece this week and Dennis next week. Should I just take a hit? Thinking Reece, Jesus -> Reggie, Antonio

    Lloris
    Reece*-Cancelo-TAA(livra, Duffy)
    Bilva-Son-Mount-Jota (ESR)
    Jesus*-Dennis-Watkins

It’s all guesswork at the moment. Usually teams will know well before we do.

Ironically at this stage the best chance we have of finding out are from the tv companies showing the rearranged games

Watkins at the moment. DCL will be an option again, but I’d need to see him play as it’s been a few months. Not to mention Everton have barely played recently.

Check out Ben Crellin’s twitter for all the latest news on DGWs. It’s all very fluid right now. GW22 is shaping up to have a bit more doubles than GW21. Hopefully we will know today/tomorrow, so wait and see
      Until there is official confirmation.

Nah not really, not without taking even more hits. I think I’m gonna stick with Foden long term and get Son on a FH for his double in GW22 (if that goes ahead).
