Just 24 hours into the Andre Villas-Boas regime and Spurs were already making waves with Wednesday’s announcement of the capture of Gylfi Sigurdsson from Hoffenheim. The 22-year-old arrives at the Lane in a five-year deal which costs the club £6.8m and represents something of a coup, with the Icelandic star initially expected to follow former boss Brendan Rodgers to Liverpool this summer:

Sigurdsson’s acquisition is regarded as the first step in a restructuring program under Villas-Boas as Spurs look to target younger and more dynamic players with the ability to cope with the new manager’s demanding high-pressing game. The former Swansea loan star admitted that playing under Villas-Boas next season was one of the major factors in his decision to reject the advances of Liverpool and move to the north London outfit instead.

I like him and the ideas he has. He has faith in me and I’m looking forward to working under his leadership. The team has world-class players in their ranks and they play good football, which I like. I was impressed with the club’s plans for next season and the coming years. There is clearly great ambition at Tottenham and the club intends to do big things.

The Statistics

As a youngster, Sigurdsson spent time on trial at Arsenal and Preston before signing a youth contract at Reading in October 2005. Prior to the 2007-08 season he was handed a professional contract but failed to establish himself at the Royals, with loan spells at Shrewsbury and Crewe earning the midfielder his first taste of league action.

The arrival of Brendan Rodgers to the Madejski in August 2009 finally allowed Sigurdsson to flourish as a key component of the Reading first XI. His one and only full season at the Royals harvested 17 goals and nine assists and, after producing two goals and an assist in four games at the start of the following campaign, Sigurdsson was snapped up by German club Hoffenheim prior to the closure of the August transfer window.

His time at the Bundesliga outfit was a little hit and miss, however. While he made 29 appearances in the 2010/11 season, 16 of those came from the bench – with 9 goals and 3 assists, though, Sigurdsson was voted the fans’ Player of the Season. Last season harvested just seven appearances before Rodgers rescued him once again, bringing the Icelandic star to Swansea in January. With seven goals and three assists in 18 league games, he lit up the Premier League and afforded Fantasy managers a superb cut-price option across the games, with a 5.0 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) eventually rising to 5.6 by the end of the campaign.

The Prospects

Turning down the chance to reunite with Rodgers could well be a risky move, given the effect the Irishman has had on Sigurdsson’s career. Clearly, his move to Spurs isn’t one of blind faith, however – assurances are likely to have been given over his role in “the hole” behind a lone front man as Villas-Boas goes about reshaping the north London outfit. Levy and Villas-Boas have already spoken of their “shared vision” and the highly sought-after playmaker is unlikely to find himself stranded on the flank – a scenario Rafael Van der Vaart suffered from time to time during the Redknapp era, much to Fantasy managers’ frustration.

Sigurdsson’s price across the Fantasy games will be key to how we assess his prospects. Gareth Bale’s cost is set to escalate after last season’s exploits, with the Welshman likely to join Van der Vaart around the 10.0 bracket. From an FPL perspective, Sigurdsson could well come in around the 8.0 – 9.0 mark and present us with a relatively cheap alternative route into Tottenham’s midfield, though the potential downside is he may not be handed free reign on set-piece duties this time round – a factor that would dent his appeal.

Much may also depend on the transfer dealings between now and the end of August. If Spurs can make the necessary changes required to implement Villas-Boas’ philosophy, the new manager’s time at Porto suggests they could well be a force to be reckoned with. Elsewhere in the midfield, Luka Modric may be moved on to generate cash, while Van der Vaart could also head out the exit door. While there is no doubting the latter’s class, the Dutchman is hardly known for the dynamism required to nail down a role in the new manager’s starting XI – such a scenario may well boost Sigurdsson’s appeal.

With a half-season of Premier League experience behind him, a bedding-in period isn’t required; there’s no reason why Sigurdsson won’t hit the ground running and one look at Spurs’ opening set of fixtures holds plenty promise. Although trips to Newcastle and Man United in Gameweek 1 and 6 respectively are far from straightforward, a run of games between Gameweeks 2-5 (WBA, NOR, rdg, QPR) suggests Villas-Boas’ side will be set for heavy investment and, with Sigurdsson at the creative hub of their attacking ploys, a strong start to the Fantasy season could well be on the cards for a player who averaged 5.7 points per game last time round, more than any midfielder in the league.

I think a lot of team selection will depend upon whether FPL Towers are going to change/adjust the rules.

Sorry just a thought on reading Kimjobil's post on keepers.

I'd like to see Recovered Balls play a part but based on the McDonald's Euros, I don't think that would affect my decisions beyond being a tie-breaker decision between two otherwise similar players.

A radical change of BPs could affect decision-making more.

Definitely. IF recovered balls comes in, players like Scott Parker and Diarra will be picked a lot more. Esecially since a lot of Defensive Mids tend to drop price because of their low scores. Lucas is a prime example, wasn't he 4.5 for Liverpool before the injury. Could be a new Shane Ferguson who actually plays this season.

what was the maximum number of points a player got in a match from RB during the euros? If it is 1 or 2 I wouldn't mind them come in. Anymore and its a no from me.

I would also like the return of subjective bonus points from totally autonomous press association representatives in the stands

I didn't play the Euros but I got the sense from those that did that the 5RBs = 1 point system they used was about the right balance, it's so rare to see a rule greeted with almost universal approbation.

Not sure if anybody got to 3, but 2 was fairly common. I think there were too many points given for RBs.

It's a much better game if it's simple; points for scoring, assisting, saves and clean sheets, and then a few additional points for playing well. You just need a bonus system that doesn't always favour the goalscorers.

5 per point, which I thought was a little high. Considering the yellow cards that were dished out, I found it unfair that a player would make 5 great tackles, blocks or clearances over lets say the first half, and then lose them just for a yellow card. IMO it should be 1 point per 3/4 tackles/clearances/blocks....

I don't think it was high at all. There were a lot of additional points for RBs as it is, and if you start introducing things like RBs into the game, there are an endless list of other things that you could introduce.

It's not like they'd get a load of points, they'd (defensive midfielders) still be very cheap I'd imagine. So it's getting a Lucas/parker instead of a Hoolahan, etc. not Bale/Siggy.

They DMers were a lot lower than others. Busquets off Spain cost 6.5, whereas everyone else was 8.0 or more. I know 6.5 isnt exactly cheap but for Spain players it was. Same with Parker for England, he was considerably cheaper. M'villa and Diarra for France were only 5.5

For those looking at defence rotation and looking at West Ham as a good option, do note that from West Ham's 17 clean sheets in the league last year only 7 were at home and the other 10 on the road.

Therefore if this trend continues they may not be ideal to pick for rotations Home & Away.

The advantage of an expensive keeper is a route into the back five of a team likely to keep clean sheets, especially given the rotation we saw with City, Utd and Chelsea.

Vorm started at 4m last season; and there are always surprise keepers so rotation does seem the best strategy. An annoying issue is picking the incorrect keeper, but I definitely gained a lot more points selecting Vorm and Krul than I would've choosing an expensive keeper and a filler.

Anyone thinking about 1 higher-priced keeper thought about Reina. We know Pool were good defensively in the first half of last season. We know Rodgers will get Pool playing like Swans, so they'll be tough to beat, and Reina is an excellent keeper. Could be a bit of a cheaper alternative to Hart/De Gea/Cech.

But Pool have very different players to Swans and that system in Swansea was implemented by Martinez and Rodgers took over. So what I reckon is to give them a period of just watching their play, the passing game might not suit Liverpool at all with their current squad. Then, if the defensive side of things are strong, Reina is worth a look depending on price.

the issue is that if you only need to go to the pub once or twice a month to watch a game and that is your monthly fee spent. Still is good value if you are a sports fan i say.

What gets me is having to also pay license fee (i dont watch hardly any BBC) and then having to stump up for ESPN or BT in the future who have the other matches.

So what are people's preferences for a tweak to the BP system? For me I'd like a 50:50 split between some kind of subjective opinion-based system and a stat-based system to come together and make an overall score.

But I'd like it to be updated same day.

    Thoughts?

Updated same day would be perfect. Id like it to be stat based, but defensive stats(intereptions, goal line clearenses, last man tackles) also assists should get more weight so it would be harder to predict and that defenders would have a better chance of getting BP. That would be more fair IMO

Maybe also there could be different amount of points for goals assist and other scores according to how difficult the effort was. Example: Empty net tap in 3 pts, fk screamer 6pts. That could put in the subjective opinion and still leave it scoring based.

I'd prefer it back to 'man in the stands' type, but others will obviously disagree. Or if it remains like it is then there has to be big changes to the weighting in the stats (shots on/off target for example).

But it should definitely only be 3 people getting bonus points per game, imo. Not like last season where a 0-0 (probably the poorest games of the weekend) ended up with 5, 6 and sometimes even more players getting bonus points.

I prefer an objective stat-based system, but the current one has some conspicuous defects like the heavy penalty for shots-off-target. That said, in my opinion the purpose of bonus points should be to reward things that the traditional FPL scoring does not reward, so in order for a bonus point system to work it shouldn't take account of anything that the FPL game already rewards, otherwise it's not really "bonus" points it's just a parallel scoring mechanism rewarding the same stats twice.

So I'd like to see either the ICT index or a tweaked PPI system, but one that doesn't take into account goals, assists or clean sheets, that way it's objective and players only get rewarded for the same stat once.

Interesting idea about goals, assists and cleanies not being factored into bonus point allocation.

I agree with you to the point that it can sometimes be a double reward system, but I would personally prefer something where goals, assists and clean sheet were weighted less and shots on target, chances created, interceptions, sucessful tackles etc. being weighted more. For example, if a player scores a hat-trick and the team win 3-2 he should surely still get extra credit for the 3 goals?

No, I mean the fact they scored 3 goals should be taken into consideration when calculating the player's contribution to the result.

I'm not saying it should be the most important factor as the player will have already recieved 4-6 points for the goals under the normal scoring, but it should still have an impact IMO.

Fair enough, I can see how that would be the case, but surely there are some things that the majority or even all of us agree on (e.g. shots off target = negatively weighted)? I'm sure there are more things like this that the community/scouts can all agree on!

Yea I think everyone agrees on that, one difficulty for FPL is that the PPI system is a third party device that's been independently tested (whatever that means in practice) as being an accurate reflection of player performance over a season, not over a game, which is a fundamental structural problem for starters, and it isn't clear to me to what extent EA Sports will be prepared to constantly tweak the algorythms at the whim of a community to argumentative and capricious as FPL addicts 🙂

This type of bonus gets my vote. With this a goal simply counts the same as a shot on target, an assist the same as a key pass - so the hat-trick scorer still has an advantage.

Yeah, except perhaps if the shot on target leads to a goal then it's sleightly more heavily weighted than just a tame effort that's straight into the keeper's arms, for example.

I think the best solution is to bring in RB and let the amount of recovered balls influence the PPI score so that it brings a more balanced outcome. Like if some defender did particularly well with like 10RB and a striker scored the PPI could be near enough. Does that make sense?

it makes sense alot, I really would like that defenders would get more credit, but that could actually open a new can of worms, since they would have to make the defenders similar priced as strikers and mids if they get similar scores. So they would have to reprice the entire system. If you look at the CL or Euro game than defenders are always best value.

Yeah, I don't mind so much that it's automatic, I just think it needs to be weighted differently so that it doesn't just reward the goalscorers, who already get points for the goals. The aim of it should be to reward good play that wouldn't have otherwise got points (like continually assisting the assists, protecting the back 4 etc).

I think the PPI system, preferably a tweaked version, should produce draft baps that then get reviewed and adjusted for any inclusions/omissions that are clearly incorrect.

8-2 was not, I was thinkin 4-1 or smthn considering how injured Arsenal team was at that point. Do you remember the team Arsenal put out there? And United was in great form after beating City and then Tott 3-0. I did not see the 3-0 for Tott at all, but at least Roon was a must for that game.

The old 'coverage' debate raises it's ugly head I see!

Apart from De Gea, Evra, Rooney and perhaps Valencia, is there anyone you would say is likely to play 6 out of the first 6 games? And of those 4, do you think any will be exceptional value? There's an arguement for including players like Valencia, Nani, Young, Wellbeck etc. if they're assured starts, but I doubt they will be so I'm staying clear unless Fergie says/does something to suggest otherwise.

Lucas is a great holding midfielder but he won't ever get you attacking returns. There is also the concern he won't be the same player after a career threatening injury.

I also agree Downing is an area Liverpool should look to improve on but I suspect they don't have the funds to splash out/waste like last summer so it may be a case of needs must

Liverpool have a few youth players that have potential and could be worth calling up at this stage. I may seem harsh but I've had years of people defending Downing as "not bad" and "could still hit it big" but the guy has never done anything. 28 years of age this month and a 2nd rate winger at best, Pool would be better off letting some youth players play.

I don't rate him really but he can do it now and then when he's in confident mood, Liverpool are just yet to see it. Wonder if Rodgers will bring through a few of their youth players. Sterling, Baio and the like

    2 goalkeepers
    4 Centre Backs
    4 Full Backs
    5 Defensive / Central Mids
    4 Wingers/Attackers
    3 Central Strikers

    My picks (3 TBC)

    Buffon & Casillas
    Kompany, Ramos, Vidic, Chiellini

        My thoughts

Agree Gerrard is no longer world class

Marcelo is an awful full back, no chance he should be anywhere near. Not convinced by Coentrao when I have seen him either. I would say Alves is better.

Cant stand Busquets but he is a decent player. not sure how good he would be without all those players around him!

good shout with Ozil and Yaya

Rooney - i assume you are joking, never world class

Busquets is a master of his position.

    Morning Everyone,

Has anyone actually taken the time to break down their statistics from last season and figure out areas for improvment or set explectations for this comming season? II figured better do it now before last season stats get wiped out.

Here were some of my categories:

Avg points by postition per week
    Avg Captain points per week
1st/2nd Half Season points per week
Avg points per GW 5 weeks before Wildcard
Avg points per GW 5 weeks after Wildcard
Avg ponts left sitting on bench per week
    # of times a bench player outscored my starter by 3 or more points
    # Hits per season
Immediate Sucess or Fail of Hit in the week taken

    Here were some of my significant findings;

Difference between my score (Rank 4800) and #1 was 5.53 points per week.
Solid GK rotation is essential 2.79 pts/GW in 1st half vs 4.79 points/GW in 2nd Half
Solid DEF rotation is essential 10.16 pts/GW in 1st half vs 11.84 points/GW in 2nd Half
    Avg Captain Score 14.37/GW

Average Score 5GW prior to 1st WC excluding DGW = 53.8
Average Score 5GW after to 1st WC excluding DGW = 54.8

Average Score 5GW prior to Jaunuary WC excluding DGW = 53.4
Average Score 5GW after to January WC excluding DGW = 60.6

    Total Hits Taken 5
Sucessfull hits - 3 where I exceeded the 4 pts needed to bring in the player. (2 of these were DGW's)
    Failed Hits - 2

Sorry for the long post.....wanted to share.

The 'average score' stats should be calculated relative to the gameweek average - 53 points when the GW average is 30 is very different to 53 points when the GW average is 60.

Also, points hits don't have to be recouped in the same week.

I thought about the HITS.....while i agree with you that the hit might not show immediate results, the thought process for the purpose of this is that if you took a hit one week, you could have saved the transfer until the next game week and saved the 4 pts with the same result. The hit stat is a small sample.....would love to see others analysis!

Canadian, I celebrate the idea, it's sometimes very useful to look for patterns. But I'm not entirely convinced that I would find this exercise terribly helpful - there are too many variables to calculate, and half-cocked analysis may be more harmful than useful.

But, genuinely, thanks for sharing the idea, it is helpful to start thinking systematically, although I usually find the post-year stats in FPL pretty good. 🙂

Honestly if Murray doesn't do it this year then I don't know when he will. This year we've had Nadal go early, Djoko has had some arm trouble, Murray had a beaut of a qualifying group. Tsonga will be the toughie here, very strong player is that lad.

Interesting Count, but the attendance figure is vital. Strip out Celtic and Gers, you'd probably be left with about 15%-20% of that national figure. And I wonder how many Scot fans end up following a surrogate Eng Prem team to compensate?

I probably don't understand the detailed arguments, but I cannot for the life of me see the benefit to the Scot Prem by not accepting the New Gers.

Perhaps Ginky, but talk about 'bite you nose to spite your face.'

Apparently 80% of rangers fans want to be put in Div 3, which is just as bad.

The brand value seems to have a close correlation to the actual tv revenue. I would like to see how much of the brand value is generated by rangers and the old firm status.

Not yet for Hart, potential is certainly there, but not world class yet in my opinion.

What, in your opinion, does world class mean? Seems to me a term that is banded around without very much thought as to what is implies, much like using 'great' as a stand pre-fix for every half-decent professional.

it should mean that they would get into any team in the world, i.e. a World Class XI or XV

Nice one Funky, thanks for response. I think it's an interesting concept and judging by lack of previous responses, answers are hard to come by.

Therefore, by your logic, Buffon isn't world class because he probably wouldn't oust Casillas or Valdes at RM, Barca? Or Rooney isn't world class because he wouldn't get into either of those teams?

Personally I think there can be 2 keepers in a squad, maybe even 3.

It is too tricky if you think of it as a first XI but as a squad of 15/20 it is a more doable task. Think we got pretty close on previous page.

Oh and there is no way Rooney is World Class. He would never get in a World XI or even squad.

Yeah, that's a reasoned response Funky. I saw that squad and must admit it's probably close to what the crowd would select, but these things are so very subjective.

GKs are interesting, it could be said that Spain's third choice is perhaps one of the world's top five, which must be galling for poor Pepe.

              Thanks for the feedback. 🙂

Since the center court has so few seats, how much are the cost of these tickets for the semi-finals/finals?
