MASON MOUNT

Since the start of December, Mason Mount (£7.7m) has produced four goals and three assists in eight Premier League appearances for Chelsea.

During that time, he has completed the full 90 minutes on each occasion, with his 23 goal attempts, 17 shots in the box, five big chances, 52 penalty area touches and 17 created chances all team-leading totals.

That suggests Mount is one of the best midfield options on offer in Double Gameweek 22, though it is worth noting that he played in a deeper role against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, as Thomas Tuchel shuffled his pack and rolled out a 4-4-2 formation in possession.

It seems unlikely to continue, however, with the German suggesting it was a tactical decision in reaction to Thiago Silva’s (£5.6m) absence, which is good news for FPL bosses, as a permanent switch would dent Mount’s Fantasy appeal and see him contribute more in the build-up phase rather than in the final third.

“We played 4-4-2 when we had the ball. After Thiago (Silva) tested positive, we told the team maybe this is the solution for today. We had some moments in defending where we created a back five because we didn’t want an overload with wing-backs. But, the team was very focused on it and open-minded.” – Thomas Tuchel after his side’s EFL Cup win against Tottenham Hotspur

BRUNO FERNANDES

Wilson injury latest as Ronaldo and Lukaku score twice 2

Last season’s top FPL points scorer, Bruno Fernandes (£11.6m), has cut a disconsolate figure in recent matches, after he was suspended for the 3-1 win over Burnley and only brought on as a second-half substitute against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.

As a result, a move for the Portuguese playmaker feels punty, but it is worth noting that amongst all teammates, only Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) can top his 1.27 expected goal involvement (xGI) tally since the appointment of Ralf Rangnick.

However, form is a wider issue at Manchester United, with the Red Devils scoring only six goals in their last five matches, which has included games against Newcastle United and Norwich City. Because of that, it’s only really Ronaldo who appeals from the pool of attacking options, with Fernandes, Mason Greenwood (£7.2m), Jadon Sancho (£8.9m) and Marcus Rashford (£9.4m) all proving difficult to rely on.

JAMES MADDISON / YOURI TIELEMANS

With four players away at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), plus an injury crisis, Leicester City’s squad is stretched ahead of Double Gameweek 22.

Included in that long list of absentees is attacking trio Jamie Vardy (£10.4m), Patson Daka (£7.1m) and Kelechi Iheanacho (£6.9m), which in turn has created an opening to spearhead the attack. However, it could be any one of Harvey Barnes (£6.5m), Ademola Lookman (£6.0m) – who has scored in his last two games – or Ayoze Perez (£5.7m) tasked with leading the line, which is a little off-putting.

Safer, more nailed-on options are available, however, like James Maddison (£6.9m) and Youri Tielemans (£6.4m).

Across his 14 Premier League appearances in 2021/22, Tielemans has produced five goals and two assists, averaging 5.0 points per match, a team-leading total. With Vardy out, he should take on penalties, whilst his share of free-kicks and corners is another route to FPL points.

Despite that, it’s hard to look past Maddison as the best midfield option in this Foxes team right now. The playmaker has four goals and five assists in his last six appearances, earning four double-figure hauls during that run, whilst he has also posted team-leading totals for goal attempts and created chances over the same period.

LUCAS MOURA

Moura can provide value route into Spurs' appealing fixtures 3

With Son Heung-min (£10.7m) seemingly ruled out of Double Gameweek 22, Lucas Moura (£6.5m) is an appealing alternative whose minutes now look more assured.

The Brazilian has shown real potential of late, with two goals and three assists in his last five appearances, with Antonio Conte’s recent comments suggesting he has the full backing of his new manager:

“Lucas Moura is one of the best players in our squad. He links quality with quantity and he’s also a wonderful person. You always find on him a smile and I love to work with these types of players.”

LEANDRO TROSSARD

Another assist for Salah as Brighton and Southampton prepare for favourable schedules 5
The best FPL midfielders for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit 7

Leandro Trossard (£6.1m) has started the season strongly, but in Fantasy terms, it has been a little underwhelming, with just four goals across his 18 Premier League appearances.

However, his most recent strike in Gameweek 19 signalled an upturn in form for Brighton and Hove Albion, which has seen them beat Brentford and Everton, whilst also taking a deserved point from Chelsea.

All things considered, that makes Trossard one of the more appealing midfield options on offer in Double Gameweek 22.

However, there are alternatives amongst Graham Potter’s squad, including the in-form Alexis Mac Allister (£5.3m) and Enock Mwepu (£5.9m), both of whom have impressed during recent matches.

“You can only pick 11 and Alexis (Mac Allister) has had to wait and be patient. He’s done that. He’s contributed from the bench, he’s been an important team player for us, and now he’s starting. He’s in a good moment. We were still thinking before the game, ‘can he go again?’ but he’s in a really good place. Confidence is high and when you are in that moment, it’s nice to keep going.” – Graham Potter discussing Alexis Mac Allister after Sunday’s win at Everton

DIOGO JOTA

FPL Gameweek 12 round-up: Saturday review, injury news and the things we learned 8
The best FPL midfielders for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit 8

In the absence of Mohamed Salah (£12.8m) and Sadio Mane (£11.8m), there will be a big responsibility on the shoulders of Diogo Jota (£8.2m) to provide the firepower.

Amongst all midfielders, the Portuguese ranks second for xGI across the season, and despite just the one fixture against Brentford in Double Gameweek 22, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he came out on top against many of those who play twice.

It’s likely he’ll feature on one of the flanks against Thomas Frank’s side, rather than in his usual ‘false nine’ role. However, that may not be such a bad thing, especially when you consider just how many of the Bees’ chances are created from wider areas:

The best FPL midfielders for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit 9

THE OTHER CANDIDATES

Raphinha "expected back" in time for Gameweek 8 as Sarr's FPL appeal wanes

Having joined Burnley’s academy in 2014, Dwight McNeil (£5.7m) has since gone on to make over 100 appearances for Sean Dyche’s side. During that time, his attacking output has often underwhelmed, but a Double Gameweek involving home fixtures against Leicester City and Watford is appealing and presents the perfect opportunity to kick-start his season.

Elsewhere, Jorginho (£5.9m) offers little attacking threat from open play but is on penalties at Chelsea, whilst Jarrod Bowen (£6.7m) and Demarai Gray (£5.5m) both look like good single Gameweek options, given that they take on Leeds United and Norwich City respectively.

Meanwhile, Tom Cleverley (£4.8m) and Moussa Sissoko (£4.4m) are alternative options at Watford who should at least offer appearance points across their two matches.

Surely the worst FPL season on record, there’s no fun in all of these postponements. Anything but exciting or interesting.

All decisions should be withheld until an hour before the deadline.

Agree it's intolerable atm, but hoping things settle down soon and the strategic/planning element comes back into play in time to bring some enjoyment to the remainder. Things weren't too bad until this past month, and IMO the glut of postponements has as much to do with clubs trying to game the system due to injuries/fixture congestion as Covid itself.

Have to say even as a Liverpool supporter and a team that might benefit ; I think Southampton's argument that postponed games should be played with the players available at the original date is spot on. I mean their point is December games should only feature players registered in December but surely the same goes for players who WOULD have been unavailable at AFCON?

Impossible this. Sour grapes to me. Eg. Thats like saying when this game was originally scheduled Salah was fully fit and available (pretending he gets injured since). Since he is now injured we must wait until he is fully fit before we can play the fixture as it is only fair even if it means waiting five years to playashe has since entered coma. Absolutely not.

Where i see issue is when league postponed the first game. Damage was done then. Should have honoured every fixture regardless of squad. Play five players only if available. Bet all teams would miraculously have full teams and benches then. No gray areas. Same for every team.

I don't think there's anything grey about only letting December registered players play in December games. AFCON stuff gets a bit more wooly.

Controversial opinion but I actually thing Leicester v Everton being off is good for Everton player owners.

Let’s face it they would be fortunate to score big points away at Leicester anyway plus after 120 minutes in the FA Cup yesterday some of them like Demarai Gray looked exhausted.

It was unrealistic to expect them to play 120 mins yesterday, 90 midweek and then 90 at the weekend.

Now however after a full week off all the Everton players should be fresh and ready for the easier fixture vs Norwich next weekend and that is the one you really bought them for anyway.

      I mean….

It’s not really possible to suggest just playing Norwich is better than playing Leicester (who have no defenders) and Norwich is it?

if Everton score big but your players don’t play ? That’s my point, players like Gray looked exhausted yesterday after extra time. No way he would have started both the next two anyway in such a short time scale.

This is the situation I'm in. Son going down was a big problem. I have no captaincy option in my team now. Even worse, I can't see a midfielder I can bring in to be captain.

          I’m right there with you.

If planing (like in typical FPL) the. Don’t think we can sell our strikers. However as you say the captaincy part with Son out is huge as Kane & Ronaldo will be hugely captained.

It’s either -4/-8 etc and get one to limit risk or be bold and get Moura and captain him for a season defining gameweek.

I don't really want to use two transfers getting Kane/Ronaldo and then two getting them out. Who knows if their second games will be played at this rate. Think I will bring Maddison or someone else and captain them. Might even punt on Bruno.

Zero class, injuries and Afcon issue lead to postponement

Wtf, you should fix your medical department and adjust the training load. Then stop buying a whole load of African players at the first place.

Just remembered, you even left out so called senior player, Nampalys Mendy from first squad earlier this season.

Leicester have a maximum of 1 COVID case, which is could be Boubakar Soumare who has an illness according to The Athletic.

In my opinion the game shouldn't have been called off, as this sets the precedent that if you have a few injuries, you can use COVID as an excuse to get the game called off.

Wasn't it Leeds that got told they had to play because their players had cup experience. Surely, since Leicester played in the FA Cup yesterday and made 3 subs, they have 13 outfield players with first team experience?

      https://theathletic.com/news/premier-league-postpone-leicester-vs-everton-due-to-player-availability/Ggs34udnC3is/

"17 Leicester players are currently missing due to injuries, COVID-19, and the Africa Cup of Nations.

Jamie Vardy, Caglar Soyuncu, Jonny Evans, Luke Thomas, Patson Daka all have hamstring injuries. Ryan Bertrand has a knee injury, Timothy Castagne has a thigh injury and Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall is out with a calf strain.

James Justin is coming back from an ACL injury while Ricardo Pereira and Wesley Fofana are recovering from broken legs. Bouba Soumare was ruled out of the win over Watford with an illness while Filip Benkovic is unavailable.

They also are without Daniel Amartey, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi and Nampalys Mendy at the Africa Cup of Nations."

For me it's not about FPL though, it's about the integrity of the league. Jonny Evans pulls his hamstring, Rodgers has to play Vestegaard, and asks for a postponement because Vestegaard is a liability. Does every club get this ruling?

It blatantly happened with Newcastle as soon as Wilson and ASM went down in that Man Utd game, and I'm sure there have been others before them; the precedent was set before now. The PL made a rod for their own backs lumping injuries in with Covid as cause for cancellation.

I agree. The PL need a rule that doesn't include the word COVID and it needs to be a clear unambiguous rule. I like the FA Cup one: if a team can field 11 players including a goalkeeper from its senior team and u23 team, then the game goes ahead. COVID isn't apart of it, so the rule will always work, and it is quite clear to everyone what the ruling is.

You posting is rubbish at best. Take a look at the transfers page and you will see that Leicester have more flags than the red cross for injuries and illness plus 3 at Afcon. Evans, Syoncu,Fofana,Justin, Pererria, Thomas defenders all out. Ndidi at Afcon and Mendy injured.Vardy, Daka, out through injury plus Inheacho at Afcon. Rogers has got on without any moaning for much longer than other teams. Please do your homework before posting.

Rubbish mate. Take a look at what Leicester have been putting up with for weeks. A whole defence plus some out with injury or illness as well as all three strikers unavailable in addition to Ndidi at Afcon and Mendy also injured.

A few injuries ? Are you having a laugh. So many illinformed posts on here by many no doubt whose fantasy teams have been affected. As Dean Smith said last year, proper football managers live in the real world. Leicester have a whole back line missing plus 2 reserve defenders out, 3 main attackers missing plus Ndidi, Soumare and Mendy.

Rogers has been managing this manfully so long, but because not a big club, not much gets mantioned.

I find it funny that pretty much everyone else has agreed with me, yet we are all uninformed and you are not! I can fully appreciate that Leicester are struggling with injuries and AFCON absentees, but were Leeds and Everton not earlier in the season, having to give PL debuts, and Southampton now? Leicester have just got lucky that Soumare has COVID, and that meant they could take advantage of the loophole in the COVID postponment rule to get it called off.

This is not about my fantasy team, I bet you won't have triple Everton when they lose 1-0 to Norwich next week! 🙂

It's not that simple, you could try to track which player has been down with Covid-19, maybe Ben D does, but you can catch it again.

Different squad members could catch it next time too.

Well in the delta variant a recent study in Isreal where the highest % of population were vaccinatedshowed natural immunity was 13 times more like to prevent reinfection and people who had the covid vaccine until you went over the 60's age group.

No studies have yet been done on Omricon, as it is too early

But you are right you have to track each player, but if lots of players have had it in the squad , it is unlikely they will be reinfected again.

Has to be major doubt- Of the 17 players missing, Soyuncu, Daka, Thomas, and Dewsbury-Hall are close to return. Even if all are fit to play another 1 player to reach the 13 threshold- Burnley in similar boat with 14 fit for now.

The rules are basically similar about 13 fit players and keepers.

The difference being Premier League clubs will play debutants and inexperienced U21 players in the Cup.

Everyone blaming each individual club needs to read the rules and have a re-think.

The Premier League have made the regulations so lax in terms of what you need that it's almost asking for teams to have a go at requesting a postponement.

That rule about the Premier League teams fielding youth in the 3rd round of the FA Cup specifically is one of them. It's so specific it's essentially spelling out how to get clubs to skirt the rules.

They've set a rubbish precedent that invited every club to ask for a postponement & clubs are well within their right to 'abuse' the system.

Premier League needs to sort out their regulations otherwise this will keep happening. Tighten it up, make it harder & clubs will have to get over it.

The ambiguity seems to be about preparation time too.

I guess with cup rounds you need to progress and turn a team out to do so.

My view is that things will settle down and planning will become easier due to the fact that Boris has stated that we will just have to learn to live with Covid and it being akin to the common cold plus they will be phasing out lateral flow tests and the reduction in self isolating times. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, keep your powder dry, stop using your chips and utilise them for all those lovely D/G weeks. All good things come to those who wait 😉

OK, time to vent. Get it all out. I see plenty major names pissed by FPL right now. It's true, tough to produce content when your work is invalidated so regularly. Can't do much other than do something else, to distract, channel that grey matter. Here are some sports related TV shows/movies I can recommend to help kill a few weeks where needed:
A League of Their Own - the literal best sports movie ever, IMHO & holds up wonderfully
Bend it Like Beckham - Parminder Nagra is aware I've a crush on her. John Rhys Myers lived up the road from me aeons back
Ballers - The Rock, Dulé Hill, just epic
Yellowjackets - a football team crashes, shenanigans ensue, no Brendan Rogers
