Chelsea assets disappoint in Double Gameweek 22 as FPL exodus awaits

In an intriguing tactical battle at the Amex, Brighton and Hove Albion fought back to earn a deserved draw against Chelsea, with Adam Webster (£4.4m) and Hakim Ziyech (£7.3m) on the scoresheet.

Our Scout Notes article reflects on the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixture.

CHELSEA UNDERWHELM

Following tonight’s 1-1 draw at Brighton, Chelsea have now dropped points in nine of their past 13 Premier League matches, keeping just two clean sheets during that time.

As a result, we are surely approaching the jumping off-point for the likes of Antonio Rudiger (£6.2m), Marcos Alonso (£5.7m) and Mason Mount (£7.7m), all of whom underwhelmed in Double Gameweek 22, as they served up a combined total of just eight FPL points.

Thomas Tuchel’s side now entertain Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, before two successive blanks due to their involvement at the FIFA World Club Cup.

However, when they do return to Premier League action in Gameweek 26, they sit top of our Season Ticker for ease of fixture right through until Gameweek 33, though it’s debatable just how much attention they will be afforded given their recent showings.

As for Mount, after being benched against Manchester City on Saturday, he struggled to make an impact at Brighton and failed to register a single effort on goal. It’s also worth noting that he has now blanked in five of his last six appearances, averaging just one shot in the box per match during that period.

Above: Mason Mount’s xG shot map Gameweek 18-22

“We looked tired and we are. It’s like this. We knew they were well prepared, had more time to prepare and you saw at the end that the stadium celebrated like it was a victory. That is what you face. We tried everything but you could see we were mentally and physically tired. We need some days off. The boys need some days off, there is no other solution.” – Thomas Tuchel

LIVELY LAMPTEY

Having had his minutes managed against Crystal Palace, Tariq Lamptey (£4.5m) returned to the starting XI tonight, and once again showed plenty of promise in the final-third.

Deployed in an advanced role down Brighton’s right-flank, the attack-minded full-back caused plenty of problems for Alonso, and was successful in four of his six attempted take-ons.

Above: Tariq Lamptey’s touch heatmap v Chelsea in Double Gameweek 22

However, he is averaging just 2.7 points per match across his 14 Premier League appearances this term, a total bettered by four other defenders at Brighton.

Elsewhere, differential Alexis Mac Allister (£5.3m) produced the assist for Adam Webster’s equaliser, and is now Albion’s most in-form player, with 24 points across his last three appearances.

Next up for the Seagulls is an away trip to Leicester City, followed by a blank, though their fixtures from Gameweek 25 onwards are particularly appealing:

“We have a nice squad, good togetherness and we are happy. The back four was sensational. They defended with great courage. It’s an art to defend the way they have done.” – Graham Potter

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez, Veltman, Webster, Burn, Lamptey (March 76), Gross (Maupay 62), Alzate, Cucurella, Moder, Mac Allister, Welbeck (Trossard 62)

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho (Kovacic 80), Ziyech (Werner 80), Mount, Hudson-Odoi, Lukaku (Havertz 80)

There will be two BGWs in 27 and 30, and DGWs in 32-33(?) and 36.

I understand the BGW30 will be the biggest, so that would be a good time to use.

        B2 for me

Spurs have a better defence than West Ham. Both should concede, but I think West Ham will concede more

Trossard has had his rest. I think he starts. Gray could be golden without Rafa, but Leicester is a considerably worse defence than Villa right now

You're mistaken. Since Ait-Nouri has worked his way into the team, he's been first choice LWB and only missed out when injured. Marcal has to deal with Saiss at LCB when Saiss is back from AFCON.

Just thinking it seems to be first game week after the blanks so an opportunity to get ahead of the curve with regard to bringing in players from certain teams.

Agree in general though, wildcard is only really useful if you want to change 6+ players

Depends. A common strategy has been to WC the week before a late DGW to ensure 15 starters in a BB. Can't implement that strategy if you use WC early.

Think it's a little different this season in that there'll be so many DGWs coming up, and may be other good opps for BB other than the usual GW34/36 (especially considering how easy it is to have a playing keeper in Foster on the bench).

Decent enough idea I think, and something I'm mulling over. Would allow me to shift a bit of dead wood, bring Salah back & load up on the likes of Cornet, Pope & Nouri (who I typically wouldn't spend a FT on) for the longer term without hits.

This is what I'm looking forward to:

      TAA Cancelo Ait-Nouri Digne Lamptey

Lamptey must wait until GW25, though. So it's Ait-Nouri (best for GW23) or Digne (best for GWs 24 to 28, then BGW30) for now, imo

If you have the funds, especially without a premium forward, then Robertson shoots to the top of that list

Starts when fit. The problem is the "when"

He was benched vs Chelsea because of another muscle complaint. He's nailed, but annoyingly injury prone

Another problem is that Potter won't always tell us when he isn't fit. But I'm willing to roll the dice for those GWs 25 to 28 fixtures and possible good doubles, if nothing else comes up

Does Mount need to leave Chelsea to fulfil his potential? Cant see how he could be happy playing 50-60% of games. Same with Foden, imagine either with Liverpool, nailed every single game and could become greats of the PL, wont do that warming the bench every second week.

Not a Chelsea/Man City issue, it's a Tuchel/Pep issue. They prefer to heavily rotate their squads given the depth and the amount of games they have to play.

I get that but both could waste years under both managers. Surely players of their quality need to be starting/playing every week.

Apologies, I just used this as an example. Both players with their quality need to be starting every game when fit. I just feel they may regret it. Remember uniteds team with fergie, Rooney Roanldo etc never got rested/rotated.

No need to apologise I was just stating my opinion. Like the above person has said, both squads have lots of options in those positions so rotation is always there. Back then under Fergue Rooney and Ronaldo were the best in their positions plus rotation was not so much an issue then as it is now with player welfare and rest.

Surely Mount and Foden are best in their position at both City and Chelsea? I dont think anyone comes near them in either of their positions. We've been waiting fro both players to really step it up the last 2 years and I feel being rested/rotated is preventing them from doing this.

            1. Ze_Austin

For the record: Foden hasn't been rotated this season. He's been injured or recovering from injury, had Covid, or gone clubbing and gotten punished (two games)

He's started every game he's been available for, otherwise

    3. Ze_Austin
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

Mount has been rested once in the last 10 league games. Prior to that, he was rarely rotated too: most absences were enforced

These days, you can become a great while still getting rested for some matches. See Ronaldo's record this season. See KDB in his monster season recently. Remember Agüero

It's part of the game now, and players are even calling for more of it (see Henderson's speeches over December). They want to stay fit and competitive, and getting muscle Injuries by being overflogged ain't the way, especially with the exceptional amount of running and pressing that top teams of the modern game demand

Rather than being a reason to leave, it's perfect for them. Also, competition keeps you on your toes: see Bernardo and Sterling, from wanting to leave in 2021 summer to being important assets to their teams now

Of course, those who can't see beyond their ego will choose to be a bigger fish in a smaller pond instead, and make a Neymar-like move. Could work, could flop, but the machines that are these big teams will keep on running with players and coaches who understand that the club is always more important than an individual

      1. TopBinFC
        • 2 Years

Excellent points in fairness. I still think both players are so much better than they are showing. Too stop start to get into any rhythm. Prime Aguero played 33 league games +, absolute PL great. Look at Salah, never rested and look what hes doing in the PL. Of the current city team who will going into the PL hall of fame when retired? Not many because of lack of game time etc. Again, this is just my opinion.

I understand. Good points too. I just don't think they're as rotated as you say, is all. No rest for Foden, and very few for Mount this season

But there are many players what you're saying does apply to, and I agree that it can hinder personal glory. Club over player, I guess

    4. Nightrain_
      • 7 Years

I think 50-60% is incorrect, in fact Mason only missed around 5 games out of 23 and Foden around 8 games, and they're injured when they're not playing so basically it's more than 80% (although not all 90 mins) and it's a good percentage considering Foden is still 21 and Mount is 23

maybe in 2-3 years when they reach their peak, they will play 100% while they're fit

don't think those moves are urgent but they aren't bad either you could double up on Villa defence with Coufal to Digne. Eggs in one basket and all that but they have lovely fixtures coming up
