Using LiveFPL’s vast array of tools, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

We will examine the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – but chiefly those in the top 10k in the current overall rankings.

Between the two groups (where there will of course be some overlap), these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the growing number of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

There is heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10k figures on the LiveFPL site, of course, such as ownership stats for different rank tiers.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 25 CAPTAINCY

Over 80% of the top 10k handed the armband to a blanking Manchester United player, so those who captained Mohamed Salah (£12.9m) for Liverpool’s clash with Burnley on Sunday have a chance to take advantage – at least, before the Red Devils face Brighton on Tuesday.

Bruno Fernandes (£11.7m) was the only player who had an ‘effective ownership’ of in excess of 100% this weekend.

CAPTAINCY STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 25
How the world’s leading FPL managers are set up for Double Gameweeks 26 and 27 3

Amongst the historic greats, there was even more faith put in the misfiring United assets, with over 90% backing Fernandes and co.

Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.5m) was more widely fancied here than in the top 10k.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD

The only change from the template squad last week? The return of a certain Egyptian, whose ownership figure has risen from 13.62% to 32.90%. When this article comes out next weekend, it may well have increased threefold.

Kevin De Bruyne‘s (£12.1m) top 10k ownership drops from 30.55% to 21.48%, with well-founded fears about a rest at Norwich and money need to invest in Fernandes/Salah the obvious motivation there.

Michail Antonio (£7.8m) and Phil Foden (£8.0m) are falling in popularity but they remain in the most-owned selection for now.

Son Heung-min (£10.7m) and Harry Kane (£12.2m) are veritable differentials, owned by fewer than 8% of these leading managers each, but like Salah, we can expect these numbers to shoot up ahead of Gameweek 26.

OWNERSHIP STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 25

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

While there was a small number of Free Hit, Triple Captain and Bench Boost chips activated in Gameweek 25, over 3% of the top 10,000 deployed their second Wildcard.

The number of top 10k managers who have yet to use a single chip drops to under 40% as a consequence.

One in five of these leading bosses, indeed, have activated two or more as of Gameweek 25.

TOP 10K: TEMPLATE WILDCARD SQUAD

It’s worth taking a look at the template Wildcard squad off the back of what we discussed above, then.

Compared to last week’s Wildcard template, there are some notable changes. The likes of Odsonne Edouard (£6.5m), Michael Olise (£5.4m), Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) and Rayan Ait-Nouri (£4.4m) all make way, with reliability of starts and/or fitness concerns a factor with most of these players.

Salah is back along with Diogo Jota (£8.5m) – there are four Liverpool assets here, with the vote mostly split between the Portuguese and Andrew Robertson (£7.1m) – while Wout Weghorst (£6.5m), whose Burnley side have two Double Gameweeks upon them, makes a debut.

Comparing the wider template squad in the top 10k to the most-owned Wildcard side here, there are seven changes in all, including a completely different front three. Big in midfield and light up top seems to be the overall message.

TOP 10K: AVERAGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS OWNED PER TEAM FOR DOUBLE GAMEWEEKS 26 and 27

Looking ahead to Double Gameweek 26, the average top 10k manager owns just short of 6.5 players whose teams play twice in the next round of games – although the likes of Conor Gallagher (£6.2m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m), who will miss their respective sides’ first Gameweek 26 fixture, are among this number.

The average top 10,000 squad still only contains 0.177 Burnley players ahead of their back-to-back Double Gameweeks. The Clarets are the only side with four fixtures to contest across Gameweeks 26 and 27.

As an Lfc supporter it is great that we are able to put players like Diogo on the bench.

...and this is why i wont miss this FPL malarkey next season and can just enjoy footy, without having to get interested in garbage bottom of the league encounters.

I've said it countless times, and I'll say it again:

Jota is a very, very good backup player... But he's still a backup player to Klopp

Salah Firmino Mané are going nowhere until they leave the club or become bad at what they do best (Firmino's "best" isn't scoring, it's his number 9/10 perfect ability blend)

Or, now with Diaz and Jota, there could be more random rests and rotation

    1. EffPeeEll
      • 5 Years

      Jota isn't a 'back-up'.

He's far from it in my opinion.

          Bobby

          Diogo 12 goals - Bobby 4

Bobby is the back-up in my book

I'd like to see how many goals Liverpool score and concede with Bobby in the team. I swear Liverpool look so much better when he plays. The way he links up play in tight areas and leads the press is 1st class.

Firmino's role isn't goalscoring. It's his blend of the numbers 9 and 10 roles. He's the striker and CAM. There are very few players on the planet who do what he does as well as he does

    2. Deulofail
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 12 months ago

I doubt Klopp sees him as backup. Just another option that brings something different. If they played one game a week for the whole season, and no one was injured, I don't expect we'd see the same front 3 in every game. It also makes it easier for the opposition.

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 12 months ago

As I said, Jota + Diaz allow more random rests and rotation

But that front 3 is preferred

They just won't play every game anymore. That's risky with injuries et al

        1. Deulofail
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 12 months ago

Another front 3 would be preferred against some opposition. My point was if you excluded injuries. Strategy alone.

          1. Ze_Austin
            • 7 Years
            3 years, 12 months ago

            That's my "random rotation" point

Freshen things up based on the opponent and other factors sometimes, but the preferred front 3 remain

            1. Deulofail
              • 10 Years
              3 years, 12 months ago

Yes, based on the opponent. So the 'preference' isn't a general preference. Jota can be in the preferred front 3. In such a game, Bobby or Minamino would be backups.

      2. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 12 months ago

Also, the front 3 have their contracts running out soon, iirc

Jota and Diaz will be nailed very soon, but I don't think it's this season

    3. Lieutenant Frank Columbo
      • 14 Years

Indeed. Now with the full attacking compliment available, it’s very much time to move Jota on in GW27.

    4. Zimo
      • 7 Years

He's not backup lad. He's on equal footing with the rest. It's good to have extra players in the same positions for rest and rotation. He was consistently rotated with Firmino and Mane both when he was fit last season

    5. jay01
      • 11 Years
      3 years, 12 months ago

You dont think its just rotation? Hes ahead of Firmino this season. I expect Jota to be playing 90 mins a week. Inter is a bigger game

Totally disagree. If this were the CL final instead of a very winnable EPL game, Jota would be starting ahead of Firmino. He’s been playing non-stop and the whole point of building such squad depth is that you can rest your first choice players, as City did with KDB and Cancelo yesterday

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years
        3 years, 12 months ago

        Jota over Firmino? Why exactly?

Have you watched Liverpool lately? Bobby needs to get back to top form to merit being first choice again. Right now, we’re simply more likely to win with Jota in the team

            • 7 Years

You're saying Liverpool is better as an attack, defence and overall team, with Firmino out of it

I assure you that Klopp disagrees, with a lot of evidence

Heck, if there was any argument based on this season... It would be Mané, yet he proved his ability at AFCON

That front 3 will be rested more often, yes. But Jota and Diaz will be the ones coming in for them, not nailed

Have to agree to disagree. Bobby might still edge the defensive function, but despite the non-traditional role of a centre-forward under Klopp, he’s been below his best form for too long to be first choice on merit. I think this will be clearer in the big games between now and the end of the season, unless we start seeing something close to peak Bobby again. He’s still not that old, so I hope we do, but those no look finishes feel like a relic from a bygone era right now

There was ridiculous hyperbole after his brace this week. Glenn Hoddle said he was Klopp's best signing!! He's not a natural finisher. Go look at his stats.
A match fit Firmino is a better all rounder IMO.

sorry but thats absolute cobblers mate, just becasue youve said it over and over and eventually you get some evidence that it might be true (hes benched becasue he hasnt had a rest in a months) doesnt make it true. what he offers to liverpool no other player does right now

firstly, really doubt thats true and secondly there is always going to be players unavailable at every club. you cant just say jota plays becasue x or y is out. im a pool fan and if you listen to klopp he is at pains to say that what jota does liverpool havent had in years aka a proper fox in the box finisher

Point is, with Bobby, Salah, Mane, Jota and now Diaz … Jota’s minutes will undoubtably be negatively affected … with the wealth of good midfield options available in FPL … Salah is enough Liverpool midfield and Jota is a fair sell now.

If you say it enough times Jota will be a back up player-)
IT makes sense to play Bobby vs Burnley cause he is better to link up play and they need him to help unlock tight and low block teams. Jota is a different kind of player Klopp uses when the team plays teams who plays more advanced.
And Jota will also play when Mane needs a rest. Its a big difference from being back up to not nailed. He shares game time with Firmino and he also plays on the left for Mane. And Jota was suppose to start but has a dead leg.
