Fantasy Football Scout community writer Greyhead continues with his series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) transfers and strategies of some noted Fantasy managers, from serial top 10k finishers to well-known faces.

The Great and The Good this year are the Scouts Joe LepperNeale RiggGeoff Dance, and Tom Freeman, FPL Wire’s Zophar, from the Hall of Fame Fabio BorgesFPLMatthewYavuz Kabuk and Tom Stephenson, Blackbox’s Az and Mark Sutherns, FPL “celebrities” LTFPL AndyMagnus Carlsen and FPL General plus last year’s mini league winner Les Caldwell.

“So, I’m never gonna dance again the way I danced with you. Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend.”

Those expecting a wham from their Free Hit were left with nothing but a feeling of what might’ve been, especially those who invested in Ben Mee (£4.8m) and Wout Weghorst (£6.6m).

Yet, with another Double Gameweek on the horizon, will we learn our lesson and keep hold of these single Gameweek superstars? I doubt it with the likes of Che Adams (£6.9m), Joe Willock (£5.9m) being talked up, although opinion seems split on Armando Broja (£5.5m) if you listen to Az’s careless whisper.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE

Mark was top of the pops this week with his brave Harry Kane (£12.5m) captaincy standing out against a Weghorst wave, which pushed him to a score of 63 for his Free Hit.

Yavuz Kabuk was the highest scorer amongst those who didn’t use their chip, despite a double hit, but Fabio remains as the King of the Mountain, and he was helped by James Maddison’s (£6.8m) 18-minute cameo and goal.

It’s worth noting that Magnus and Joe have played their second Free Hit of the season and it was a typical bold play from the Grandmaster, with triple Man City, Southampton, and Burnley; it was perhaps unlucky that it didn’t pay off this time around.

TRANSFERS

This is a summary of the transfers for this week:

  • Az – Weghorst, Son (King, Salah)
  • LTFPL Andy – Free Hit
  • Fabio Borges – Broja (King)
  • Joe Lepper – Free Hit
  • Geoff Dance – Free Hit
  • FPL General – Free Hit
  • Les Caldwell – Willock (Cornet)
  • Magnus Carlsen – Free Hit
  • Mark Sutherns – Free Hit
  • FPL Matthew – Saiss, Weghorst (Coufal, King)
  • Neale Rigg – Free Hit
  • Tom Freeman – Broja, Weghorst, Kilman (King, Dennis, Coufal)
  • Tom Stephenson – Free Hit
  • Yavuz Kabuk – Son, Weghorst, Tarkowski (Emerson Royal, King, Salah)
  • Zophar – Free Hit

Whilst the Free Hitters were deciding on their Burnley triple-up and which City midfielder would survive Pep roulette – spoiler: it wasn’t Riyad Mahrez (£8.8m) – the rest were left to make do with the limited transfers they had.

Les Caldwell deserves a mention for moving out a Double Gameweek player in Maxwel Cornet (£5.9m) for Willock and coming out on top in that exchange.

Tom Freeman looks intent on trying to navigate the next few weeks without the aid of a chip and so took a minus eight, as did Yavuz Kabuk, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he Wildcards this week as he sold Mohamed Salah (£13.1m).

TEMPLATE

The template for The Great and The Good is as follows, with the number in brackets showing how many teams in which they appear:

  • Pope (8), De Gea (3)
  • Cancelo (12), Mee (8), Amartey (6), Livramento (6), Alexander-Arnold (6)
  • Son (10), Mahrez (9), Fernandes (8), Sterling (6), Bowen (6)
  • Weghorst (15), Kane (11), Broja (11)

The impact of the Free Hit gang means that the template was turned upside down with nine new players in the squad; it’s certainly the first time that Weghorst, Mahrez and Mee have made an appearance in the XV.

There was plenty of regret for the Free Hitters who brought in Daniel Amartey (£3.8m), as he also made his debut in the squad – but unfortunately, his eight points were left on the bench for all of them.

WHAT IF?

Amidst all the chaos, it can be easy to forget that our moves do make a difference. The infamous “What If” machine shows us what would have happened if we had not made any transfers or changes to our team since Gameweek 1.

This shows that the General has been the best at directing his battalion over the campaign with an improvement of 388 points from his Gameweek 1 squad, although Tom Stephenson and Fabio are not far behind.

Whilst Tom Freeman sits towards the bottom, it’s worth noting that with his Free Hit, Wildcard and Bench Boost in hand, I expect that to change by the end of season. You can check your own progress here.

CONCLUSION

Wildcard chips are burning in the pockets of many as we enter three weeks of doubles and blanks but many will be keeping their powder dry until the completion of the FA Cup matches to see what the final schedule will bring.

Even when the matches are finalised, there will still be questions to answer. Should we really sell Joao Cancelo (£7.1m)? Is Reece James (£6.2m) fit enough? Can we really be thinking about investing in the Newcastle defence?

Whatever happens, I can sense a lot of joy from seeing those Free Hit-failing Burnley players disappearing from these managers’ teams. If nothing else, this week should tell us that quality is better than quantity when it comes to our squad selections.

Anyway, that’s all from me for and remember: don’t have nightmares.

I had initially planned to wildcard this week.

However looking at my team now it doesn’t seem worth it. I’ve got 4 decent double gameweek players.

Maybe just a FT to get Salah back.

Nope, I'm using my BB this week to get it done, then will WC in 31 with best 11 possible and bench fodder. One decent sub to cover no shows, seems to be alot of benching headaches lately

Interesting idea - Robbo will get a rest here & there & Tsimikas is great value. Cameos from the bench would be the main problem to starting him every week, although he's only been subbed on 3 times this season that I can see

    Ramsdale (Pope)
    TAA Cancelo Saiss Burn (Tierney)
    Salah Son Olise Ramsey (Saka)
    Broja Kane (Weghorst)

A little unsure what to do this week. Pretty settled on Olise to Elyounoussi (for this week as well as long-term), but I have been contemplating a -8 for Pope + Saiss to Foster + Thiago Silva all week. I guess what's holding me back is looking at what's going out if I do it. I already have Ramsdale who I'm happy to play this week and Saiss has a double. That being said, I knew when I decided to get Ramsdale + Pope on GW25 WC (with GW26 BB in mind) that I'd have to downgrade one at some point to free up funds, and Foster does have a double over Ramsdale's single game so there's arguably no better time to have to transfer a keeper. I'm definitely going against the grain moving Saiss on, but I've watched a bit of Wolves lately and haven't been impressed defensively and the stats match up, so I'm happy to take that gamble. Bringing in Silva would be a long-term move and I'd also then decide between him and Kane for captaincy this week. (Losing Saiss shouldn't impact me for BGW30 too much as regardless of tonight's result I'll have minimum 6 in my current team for that week, so I feel I can navigate it.) I'm going to have to bench some good options either way but especially if I make these moves (2 of Saka, Tierney and Cancelo).

    Does this sound stupid?

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

      That's an eyesore to read

Tl;dr: considering Pope + Saiss to Foster + Thiago Silva for -8. Feels a bit stupid but feel like I have reasoning with Foster having a double and I may captain Thiago, and they're long-term moves that may pay off quickly. Is it stupid to consider?

Saiss has such a good DGW this week .. absolute madness to take a minus 4 for SILVA? he might not even play both. madness

Thiago has started 10 of Chelsea's last 11 in a row in the PL, only missing that one game because of injury, he's also played in CL, EFL and CWC games alongside that, he's nailed in my eyes. I don't think Wolves' DGW is that great either, they were carved open by West Ham a number of times and were lucky not to concede more and Palace have a front line that will trouble them.

But appreciate all the feedback, I'll have a rethink

Silva played so much cause Chelsea had alot of injuries and a less hectic schedule. Chal, James, Christin, all back, more options now.

After missing the first few games of the season with injury Silva has only missed 3 games (1 definitely being due to injuryk Christiansen is on his way out and I don't see playing too often.

Worth a -8 to get to this for GW 28?

    Ramsdale

    Cancelo | Tierney | Coady | Rudi* | TAA

    Salah | Couthino* | Mount* | Saka

    Dennis

Bench: Sanchez | Jota | Edourad | Idah

Confused on chip strategy now. Have 2 FH, WC and BB left.

If Southampton beat Hammers tonight will mean have 9 GW 30 in place already and decent for DGW 29 not so great DGW 28 although ok so tempted to hold off WC to 31/32 and BB 36. When to use FHs?

A - 3 players vying for 2 spots. Not nailed to play both games.

B - yes, WHU have good fixtures after Liverpool

Hi all, is there anything wrong with this plan to fix team below and navigate next few weeks?

28: DDG, Foden, Edouard > Foster, Coutinho, Jimmy (-8)
29: Bowen > Maddison or Kulusevski (FT)
30: Dalot > Wolves defender (FT). Figure out Chelsea coverage after.

      Ramsdale, DDG
      TAA, Robbo, Cancelo, Tierney, Dalot
      Saka, Foden, Salah, Son, Bowen
      Edouard, Idah, Broja
      1 FT/1 FH/BB

Not overly keen on Wolves attacker but a double this GW and plays in 30 so I understand why you're bringing him in.

Has Countinho done enough in recent game? How does the change with 2 up front affect his FPL appeal?

Looks good, although I'm not a fan of Jiminez myself. Consider there will be quite a rush for Kane as well, but I guess you have Son that gives you Spurs attacking coverage

Buying Maddison the week he plays Arsenal (A) when Bowen has Villa (H) doesnt seem quite right - 28/30 seems better jumping on point

Or would it be better in GW29 when Arsenal have double?

I’ve got 8 DGW players this week plus TAA/VVD & Salah as my other single GW players

      Do I WC? I don't have a FH left.

      Foster
      Tierney | Cancelo | Livaramento | Digne | Targett
Saka | Salah | Bruno Guimaraes
      King | Kane

      Ramsdale | Foden | Bowen | Firmino

Not too sure what to do.

Can Someone with knowledge on this sort of stuff let me know if gameweek 36 and 37 will be roughly equal in size double gameweeks?

As if that is the case I will save the triple captain for a better opportunity

Roughly, yes. 37 maybe slightly smaller. I use this to plan:

No GW36 is unlikely to have the same number of games in 37.

Gameweek 36: A free midweek allows for a Double Gameweek. This is likely to be the biggest Double Gameweek of the season.

is there any ideas what teams will double in the smaller ones, as I assume 36 will be best for free hit

Probably best listening to one of the podcasts on chip strategies like Planet FPL who are quite good at predicting fixtures

If you have 1 FH, WC and BB left, what is the best option:

      A) FH this week, WC 29 (and get players who also play on 30), save BB for big DGW 36

      B) WC this GW, BB next week, FH 30

      C) WC this GW, BB next week, save FH for big DGW 36

They are all viable chip strategies. It depends on your team and who you have

      A) Jimenez in 28, Kane in 29
      B) Watkins/Ings in 28, Kane in 29
      C) Kane in 28&29
      D) Coutinho in 28, Son in 29
      E) Son in 28&29

      1) Is it worth holding Trossard for the next GW's double? Will he get enough gametime?

      2) When will we know about doubles in 33 and 36, you think?

Going Bruno to Salah as planned this week, but contemplating one or two hits.

Dalot to Rudiger and/or Gallagher to Willock.

Thoughts? Have 4 doublers as it stands (Livra, Broja, Kilman, Dennis (Groan))
