Using LiveFPL’s vast array of tools, we look at the squad make-ups and chip usage of the world’s leading Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

We will examine the 1,000 names in LiveFPL’s ‘Legendary Managers’ list – the historic cream of the crop, much like our own Hall of Fame – but chiefly those in the top 10k in the current overall rankings.

Between the two groups (where there will of course be some overlap), these are the managers who can offer us a better gauge of FPL ownership and chip strategy, as opposed to the overall figures that are skewed by the growing number of untouched ‘ghost teams’.

There is heaps of useful information beyond overall and top 10k figures on the LiveFPL site, of course, such as ownership stats for different rank tiers.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: GAMEWEEK 29 CAPTAINCY

Above: Gameweek 29 captaincy stats for the top 10k (left) and the all-time greats (right)

Let’s get the easy bit out of the way first: after a wide-open captaincy race and a polarising set of scores in Gameweek 28, the vast majority of the leading managers handed the armband to Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) this time around.

Almost 98% of the FPL bosses who used their Triple Captain chip backed the Egyptian, unsurprisingly.

READ MORE: Everything Jurgen Klopp said about Mohamed Salah’s injury

TOP 10K: CHIP USAGE

There were a fair few Bench Boosts deployed in the top 10k this week but the Triple Captain was the most popular chip, with not far off one in four of the leading bosses using it.

Fewer than one in five FPL managers in the top 10,000 still have three or more chips to use, whilst not far off half (45.9%) have either maxed out their allocation or have only one chip remaining.

Bench Boosters have had a good start to the Gameweek, with Crystal Palace v Manchester City and six more ‘doublers’ to follow in the coming days.

TOP 10K AND ‘ELITE’ MANAGERS: TEMPLATE SQUAD FOR GAMEWEEK 29

While the ‘template’ goalkeepers and forward-line remained unchanged compared to Gameweek 28, there were a few notable tweaks elsewhere.

Andrew Robertson (£7.2m), Kieran Tierney (£5.1m) and especially Matt Doherty (£4.8m) all saw interest spike, with Lucas Digne (£5.1m), Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) and the injured Reece James (£6.2m) falling out of favour.

In midfield, the Spurs duo of Son Heung-min (£10.9m) and Dejan Kulusevski (£6.2m) came to the fore at the expense of Villa pair Jacob Ramsey (£4.8m) and Joao Coutinho (£7.4m).

OWNERSHIP STATS FOR THE 1,000 ‘LEGENDARY MANAGERS’ IN GAMEWEEK 29

TOP 10K: TEMPLATE WILDCARD SQUAD

The template Wildcard squad is unsurprisingly big on Gameweek 29 ‘doublers’: there are 10 of these players in total, with budget fillers accounting for the other five.

Gameweek 30 has also been factored in, with nine of this XV in action in the upcoming decimated round.

TOP 10K: AVERAGE NUMBER OF PLAYERS OWNED PER TEAM FOR BLANK GAMEWEEK 30

The average manager within the top 10k will likely require a hit or two to get a full playing XI out in Gameweek 30, although with only four fixtures to choose from, some FPL bosses may settle for 9 or 10 assets with an unaffected fixture.

The two north London clubs account for well over half of the 8.511 average, with Bukayo Saka (£6.6m) the most widely owned player.

First glance says all 4 games will have goals, not checked but i would predict Wolves cs having the highest percentage in that Cs odds table G Whizz pits out later in the week. Villa-arsenal is unpredictable, feels like goals but they could also go toe to toe with a tight boring game. Spurs-West ham usually goals, and West ham a bit weak with injuries but Spurs are not good defending set pieces which West ham are very good at. LEICESTER usually scores, Brentford away is synonomous with goals conceded and i will bet my house Brentford scores from a set piece. Wolves, and maybe one or two in Arsenal game.

Barnes or Maddison (not just for gw30)?
This is going going to be one of those reoccurring questions this week.

Barnes looked a threat yesterday against arsenal, made plenty of good runs. I barely noticed Maddison but then again I didn't watch the whole game

Depends on who stays fit better, which makes it hard to call. I also think Barnes is better with Vardy out, but Maddison better with Vardy in the team (not sure if the stats back that up) so could depend on Vardy's fitness as well.

Vardy makes the whole team better. He creates so much space with his runs. I think both Maddison and Barnes are damaged by Vardy being out.

Any non-Kane owners out here? Are you planning to get him in or ride it out with maybe Son captain?

I'd have to take a -4 this week to get him and -4 to get Salah back for 31. Doesn't seem worthwhile.

I have triple Spurs attack. I think you can C Son. But Kane has been looking better than Son, so if you don't have Kulu, you could perhaps afford to get Kane now and upgrade Son to Salah next week by downgrading someone to Kulu? Don't know if that could be doable. But if that -4 gets you Kane and extra player for this week and you can get Salah back and have improved team, it could be worth considering.

I could do Salah to Kulu then reverse it for 30 without hits. Or just get Toney for DCL/Weghorst. Lack of Kane is the worry. His ownership will be pretty big.

80% of Top 10k have used wildcard

Hoping saving the WC for post GW31 will pay off as I’ve been stuck around 10-15k for the past 3-4 gameweeks.

I'm planning to use it in GW34 to set up BBC36. I reckon the last five weeks is a decent chunk of time to make use of WC. Got a FH for when I need it most - probably 33 or 37.

Dropped from 6,5k to around 19k in gw28 due to not having played the WC myself, so at this point just hoping I could at least claw some of it back with it..

Feeling a bit naive and disappointed with myself, since I was expecting nowhere near the levels of ownership or returns some of the assets got!

      So let us hope!

I haven't wildcarded now (did back in gw21) but have still stayed within top 10k this period. Took -8 for gw28 and -12 now in 29 to get in the players most likely to do well though.

    Bottomed since article changed:

    Ramsdale
    Cash, Kilman, White
    Son, Kulu, Saka, Raph
    Kane

0.3 itb, 1 FT, Salah, TAA, Wood*, Broja*
I don't think I want Jimenez for a hit. Laca I would get, but I chose White over Coady, so can't get 4th Gunner in.
    My possibilities are probably
    A) Wood or Broja to Gelhard for free to get funds
    B) that + Jimenez in for -4
    C) Salah downgrade to whom?
    D) Something clever, what?
    E) If A, which one out and is Gelhard best pick since Richardson is 4,5 now?

Salah to a Leicester mid maybe but not terribly exciting.

Rolling a transfer over the IB might be better than using it this week. You've got a lot of bases covered with that team already.

I have both FHs left but can get 8 players without a hit. Doesn't feel like I can really make much ground in my MLs by playing FH this week. Would be doing it just to get Barnes/Maddison + Kane (c).

The longer the season goes on the less there will be to play for most likely. if title is won by DGW 36 expect alot of rotation, rests etc and then your chips will be trickier to play.

            That's true...
BUT, the counter to that is that if there's still stuff to be played for, key players may be less likely to be rested.
Also, I'm still talking about having 8 players for the BGW. I wouldn't use a FH to get three more - especially as they're all playing against each other.

      2. TopBinFC

Just depends who your 8 players are? If using FH how many of the 8 would be in FH team? If not many then play FH

      Yep, agree with both.

I have 2FH, WC and BB to play.

FH this week to load up on attacking positions.

I have been thinking 33 was going to be a good week for FH but looking at the predicted fixtures it will be easy to get a decent team there. Especially if WC31.

FH33 looks a perfect opportunity imo.

I don't have many of the doublers other than Arsenal. Getting players from MUN, NEW and CHE won't be easy for most people. I gain a lot of fixtures that way too especially if I go without my Liverpool boys who I likely will go without on FH.

I’m in a similar boat (see above). Feeling like I have to FH at this point, even though the upside looks pretty low. There are some diffentials out there though. Not many will have Bamford or Dan James for example, but still, it isn’t ideal for a FH I don’t think. Needs must though

I wouldn't FH - the upside is minimal with only 4 fixtures. No real differentials for instance. There will be much better weeks to use it.
-4 to have 8 is sufficient

Digne most likely out, so it's 5 players

early, but what move should be done? 1ft and 2.4m itb.

    ramsdale
    white doherty
    saka raph ramsey
    jimenez kane

(dubravka taa rudiger targett mount salah broja)

    a) mount -> kulu or maddison/barnes ?
    b) broja ->?
    c) save.

I remember someone shared a prediction of who would double in 33 and 36 chart. Anyone remember where it is? It wasn't Crellin

Keane + Jota + Dennis > Doherty + Barnes + Lacazetti for -8 gives me 9 players. Yes or No?

    Keane to:
    A. Doherty
    B. Cash
    C. Reguilon

    Thanks

On a red arrow currently but with some doublers still to play, unfortunately no chance of Saiss and Ramsey coming off my bench with their points and yet again trolled by Dennis and Weghorst!

Have 10 for GW30, not sure whether to stick with that or add another as there's nobody I'm keen on long term:

    Ramsdale
    Doherty, Tierney, Saiss
    Kulusevski, Ramsey, Raphinha, Saka
    Kane (C), Jimenez (vc)

    Sa, Salah, TAA, James, Weghorst
    0.2 ITB

Def G2G. Would only lose Weghorst if you wanted 11 but I wouldn't take a hit for it as unlikely anything decent at that price range

    hey guys early thoughts got 9 for gw30 with 1ft + 0.7itb:

    ramsdale
    saiss - tierney - doherty
    coutinho - saka - raph - kulu
    kane

(sanchez, taa, vvd, mo, broja, edouard)

    A) edouard -> toney (get 10)
    B) mo -> barnes/maddi + edouard -> toney/jiminez (get 11 for -4)
    C) roll ft

Plan was to FH this week, with Aitnouri and Digne doubts I've got 8 players, FH or couple of transfers?

    Ramsdale
    White (Digne/RAN)
    Raph Kulu Saka Coutinho
    Kane Jimi

I'd run with that until you hear something firmer on Digne

B if you need a player because WHU have some nice fixtures beyond 30. A is at risk if other defenders return. C viable even if not fielding 11 - don't screw up team for one week

    Which of these moves?

    A. Broja to £6.2m striker (no idea who however)
    B. Mount to Barnes/Maddison
    C. Mount to Martinelli (have Saka)

Did think about Mount & Broja to Laca and a £5.3m mid but can't be Martinelli (have 2 other arsenal) and don't want any of the others beyond 30 and think it's a waste to just make a switch for this week
