We round up the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Crystal Palace v Manchester City in our latest Scout Notes.

All stats taken from this article are from our Premium Members Area.

NO WAY THROUGH FOR CITY

It regularly felt like a goal was coming for Man City on Monday night, as they racked up 18 shots and 2.33 expected goals (xG) at Selhurst Park.

However, they failed to make the all-important breakthrough, as a resolute Crystal Palace outfit stood firm throughout.

As a result, the Eagles have taken four points from the reigning champions in 2021/22 whilst not conceding a goal, having won 2-0 at the Etihad back in October.

On the night, no player had more shots than Riyad Mahrez’s (£8.7m) four, while Kevin De Bruyne (£11.8m) hit the post from a tight angle after being fed by Jack Grealish (£7.5m).

Phil Foden (£7.9m), meanwhile, cut an often-isolated figure up front for City (he registered just two touches in the opening 20 minutes of the game), and will surely be due a ‘rest’ soon, having played a lot of minutes of late.

Despite failing to win, City are now unbeaten in 14 away league games since losing in Gameweek 1 against Tottenham Hotspur, with Burnley up next at Turf Moor in Gameweek 31.

“We played a really good game. In 90 minutes, we concede mistakes a little bit, but the way we played was really good. Luck doesn’t exist in football. We have to score goals and we didn’t do it. We played to score goals and concede few. We struggled a little bit.

The guys who were playing were playing good, that’s why I didn’t make changes. We didn’t score, that was the mistake.

The team that was there today was there before and will be there in the next game. I am very pleased with the performance and the way we played.” – Pep Guardiola

CANCELO‘S 9-POINTER

With their attack faltering, it was down to City’s defensive assets to produce the points, with Joao Cancelo (£7.0m) collecting maximum bonus once again.

The Portuguese was particularly lively at Selhurst Park, hitting the post with a long-range drive in the first-half.

He also posted some noteworthy underlying numbers, including 84 opposition-half touches, seven take ons and two created chances.

9, 2, 9, 1, 7, 2 11, 2, 6, 4, 18, 7 – Joao Cancelo’s FPL points returns in his last 12 matches

Above: Joao Cancelo’s touch heatmap v Crystal Palace in Gameweek 29

IN-FORM PALACE

Crystal Palace certainly rode their luck at times on Monday, but have now lost just one of their last nine matches in all competitions: a 1-0 defeat against Chelsea back in February.

It’s been some turnaround for Patrick Vieira’s side, who may come back onto the Fantasy radar in Gameweek 34, when they face successive matches against Leeds United, Southampton and Watford.

They also have two fixtures to reschedule against Newcastle United and Everton, which will drop in somewhere during the below run.

Against City, they did offer a threat on the counter, especially in the first-half, with their opponents leaving spaces at the back.

Michael Olise (£5.4m), meanwhile, has now started eight of Palace’s last nine league fixtures, and has the potential to become a real differential during the run-in, given his excellent creative numbers.

Above: Michael Olise has created four big chances since Gameweek 22, which ranks joint-fourth among midfielders

“It was tense from the first minute but I think the players managed the difficult situations very well. It was a team effort and our performance was really good. When you play against the quality of players they have, you need a bit of luck at times and at times we were lucky but you also need to perform as well. We want to make the end of the season exciting. We’re still in the FA Cup and it will be a massive game against Everton and if we win that it will be really exciting.” – Patrick Vieira

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Clyne, Andersen, Guehi, Mitchell, Kouyate, Schlupp, Olise (Ayew 65), Gallagher, Zaha, Mateta (Edouard 65)

Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Cancelo, Rodri, De Bruyne, Bernardo, Mahrez, Grealish, Foden

    Team as it stands:

    Sa

Surely this calls to use the first FH(have both remaining)?

yeah if you've got both probably.
but you do cover several of the big risks - maybe you lose 20 points from the average?

can you make that up on a FH in a double later?

might be a close call if you do a -4 for White & Martinelli for example.

think i've figured out my plan for the next couple of weeks injuries aside.

    Current team

    Sa (Foster)
    Ait-Nouri, Tierney (TAA, Robertson, Alonso)
    Saka, Kulusevski, Raphinha, Ramsey (Salah)
    Kane, Watkins (Broja)

    1ft, 2.2 itb.

    Going to roll my FT into gw31 and then do;

    Alonso + Ramsey + Watkins > James + Havertz + 4.5fwd

    Play a 4-5-1 going forward.

      I really like the plan.

Which one is more important, having Kane this week to protect rank or get James & Kai for the enormous upside in GW31 onwards? Currently have 2 plans,

      A. Salah & Wood to Barnes/Maddy & Kane (-4) this week, Son to Salah in 31

      B. Save FT, Tierney & Coutinho to James & Kai on 31 for free

I'm a little biased as a WH fan - but I think we'll hold Tottenham to max 1 goal. So I don't think ripping up your team to get Kane makes sense.

I'm strongly considering Saka (c) myself - but will probably go Kane due to ownership.

            Yep!
I'm 100% not to be trusted on this.

Pretty concerned of Fredericks defending Son.

          3 years, 8 months ago

Yeah you got me thinking thanks.

Don't think I'm ripping up my team since a Leicester mid should be a good investment long term while getting Kane now very understandable I think. Problem is losing Son who could be s better value and wasting FTs to ditch and get back Salah. I did that in GW27/28 (Salah out, Bruno to Salah) already.

Guaita when I played him in DGW26 - 1 point.

    Guaita when I benched him in GW28 & 29 - 8 and 9 points.

I should've been rewarded with my loyalty - kept him since GW10 (even that week I benched his 7 points vs City for Foster's 2). Sigh

Not really. I like the game because it's a strategy based game - now with Covid postponements and players missing out of the blue, and the stupid VAR around I really think this is the last season for me. Too many incomprehensible random variables

            1. Holmes
              • 12 Years
              3 years, 8 months ago

same. I'm not sure about the reasons but it has turned more into a routine than anything, setting up team every week for the sake of it just because I have signed up for it. Think I'll take a break or just forget about it.

Dont even feel like watching a game even if I want to. Man Utd vs Spurs was the first game I have bothered to watch in last few months and could only manage 20mins or so... Atleast I got to watch Ronaldo's screamer live! 😀

Yeah despite getting more challenging (harder to get into top 50k, let alone top 10k), the game's getting a bit boring. It's like you're not getting rewarded for all the efforts you put in.

I think you should take a sabbatical like I did once. To recharge the batteries, and interest.

I nearly retired at the end of last season. But then Ronaldo happened lol. Expected more btw but at least the screamer is worthy of a return 😉

Feels like De Gea > Ramsdale is a smart move for the rest of the season - so may as well do it now.

Digne > White maybe? Someone cheap and easy.

Mahrez > Coutinho might be good too.

-8 for those 3 gets you to a good spot - I'm against FH this week if at all possible.

Think I may only have 6 or 7 players this week. Given they are the following, I’m not sure it’s worth a FH - got 1 left.

Players would be. Kane, Kulu, Docherty, Raphina, Saka, Coutinho + replacement for Digne with 1FT.

Its Everton bro, probably the worst side in current form and Lage did say he will be back in starting XI, was just a rest.

I sold Ramsey for Kulu for a hit and left Coutinho in my team, never expected anything from Ramsey after having him for his blanks.

Morning all. A little unsure of how to proceed, been thinking of rolling FT this week and playing 8, and then making some bigger moves next week injuries/fitness permitting, but similarly tempted to use FT this week to field 9 and have a bit more of an out there punt but one I'd likely stick with until the end of the season, and that won't impact the other moves.

    Ramsdale (Foster)
    Tierney Doherty (Cancelo TAA Burn)
    Ramsey Son Saka (Salah Elyounoussi)
    Kane Bamford (Broja)

    A) Elyounoussi to Eriksen
    B) Roll FT then next week: Tierney to James, Elyounoussi to Odegaard, Son to Mahrez/Sancho (-4)

With A, I can still do the James and Mahrez/Sancho moves next week, and I'd likely move out Doherty instead of Tierney. I like Eriksen, Brentford on a good run and I think from an attacking perspective they have good fixtures against a few teams that are leaky. I see a lot of people targeting Leicester folk for this week but they're still abysmal defensively. This would mean I can't get another Arsenal attacker for the run-in though and I think they have more upside than defenders looking at the fixtures.

*Going with B, I may hold off on the Odegaard move an extra week with Elyounoussi playing Leeds in GW31, although even though he's in form I can see Southampton going on one of their bad runs so I may still do it

Sounds like you want Eriksen more than Ødegaard so go ahead & back your differentials I think. My only slight concern for your team would be that you end up with 2 mids that you might not want to play every week (Ramsey - fixtures, Eriksen - fitness/fixtures). I'm also thinking about Son - Sancho in 31

Thoughts on Salah? Do you think he will be ready for GW31?

I imagine Klopp will have a presser today, let's see if he's available for tomorrow first

Sounds like a battle against time to be ready for Arsenal, so should be ok for 31.

    What would you do herr?
FH, WC or use some transfers? Who in?

    (1FT, 2.1 itb)

    Ramsdale
    Dawson/Doherty
    Saka/Raphinha/Coutinho/Kulusevski
    Lacazette/Antonio*

The rest: Foster, TAA, Cancelo, Rudiger, Salah, Dennis

    Morning All,

Definitely Kane for ownership, otherwise go with your gut. I’ve gone Toney and Bamford too

What do you think of this plan:

    GW30: Salah to Son
GW31: Dawson to Rudiger/James (Sweat it without Salah)
Gw32: Transfer in a one week punt (No Salah v City away)
    GW33: FH
    GW34: WC
    GW35: Roll FT
    GW36: 2FT and BB

Salah-less in gw31 vs a team he has a 29 pointer history in a single gw, no for me.

Hope you're feeling extra steely when everyone captains Salah v Watford! Who's your one week punt in 32 - Bruno? I'm not sure if the whole hokey-cokey is worth it tbh, especially not if you already have Kane/Kulusevski for 3p

Fair. Still got WC so could get him straight back in for 31 that way, but lose advantage of WC later on if that is worth it

That is helpful as a get-out option. Definitely worth keeping this plan in mind at least - if theres any chance Salah misses Watford due to fitness / proximity of Egypt games, then suddenly it looks great

Anyone considering Salah -> Barnes hokey cokey?

Trying to consider if worth a hit.
