Joe chats to data analysis expert Emma, who each week looks to second-guess the rotation threats facing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

Before each Gameweek, thousands of FPL managers consult the latest set of predictions produced by Emma on Twitter via  @jumpthewave. This research channels the expertise of a team of analysts, fans and Fantasy Football veterans, including FFScout’s resident maverick, Luke.

Her research has fast become a staple part of Gameweek preparation for many, as she looks to get inside the minds of Pep Guardiola and Thomas Tuchel, to assess which players will start.

As part of the latest Meet the Manager video series, Emma explains how she only started playing FPL a few years ago, to join her Chelsea-supporting families’ mini-league.

Completely new to the game in 2018, she used her experience as a data analyst to assess the best transfer and captaincy calls each week. She has also learned to curb her instinct to take risks at times too, as data drives her decisions.

And her use of data is certainly paying off with a top 3,000 finish in her three-year career, as well as another just outside the top 30,000. With an overall rank of around 51,000 this year she looks set for another strong finish.

While currently her research focuses on Manchester City and Chelsea, she is looking to expand her reach to look at the predictive line-ups of other Premier League teams. But for this, she needs the FPL Community’s help. Budding line-up experts are urged to contact her to see how they can help add even more weight to her research.

Joe and Emma also chat about the rest of the 2021/22 season’s plans. This includes the best time to use chips, with Gameweeks 33 and 36 looking a pivotal time for her Free Hit and Bench Boost.

Just how much will the teamsheets of the top four teams influence her decisions? Given her successful predictions so far, FPL managers are advised to pay attention to how her data can help their decisions each week.

Joe’s chat with Emma can be viewed below.

In the Meet the Manager series, Joe chats to an FPL manager who is offering new insight into the game or has an incredible rank history, to help the FPL Community fine-tune their decisions each week.

Disappointing that there has been nothing from FFS about the changing blank/double situation after today's FA Cup tie.

I guess Tom and Neale like to have their Saturdays off.

Either you want to be the number 1, one-stop-shop resource for FPL or you don't. Ben Crellin managed to update everyone tonight despite an awful family bereavement. It would take literally 30 seconds to update the FFScout Twitter feed after the Chelsea result.

The best way to look at it is that if you used FH, you probably would have likely gone Ramsdale/Sa, Wolves defs, Jimenez, Raphinha, the same Spuds and then Coutinho and an Arsenal mid. If it was Saka then OK, but I wouldn't say an FH (especially this week) is worth around 11pts especially when so many are in the same boat

Delighted with a green arrow so far. Decided to save a transfer and play with 8 which soon became 6. Kane (c), kulu and Doherty left. Probably a red arrow to come but hopefully no where near as bad as I was expecting. I've got a very slim chance of beating a free hitter on my national Cup competition too which would be a miracle if it happens

22 with Kane(c) and Kulu to go.

Felt really good about moving Raphinha out with my FT last minute. But I got Martinelli 🙁
Barnes was the next choice so hopefully he doesn’t go too well.

Might hold onto a green. Likely a grey though I think.

Damage limited for the week which was the goal.

FH teams probably have twice as many players left to play with auto subs

Probably sitting on about 22 points and have Toney, Kane C, Son, Kulu, (or Doherty) Barnes off the bench & Schmeichel yet to play

Pretty sure they didn’t have Hwang or Jimenez … Must be looking at 30 points more than the average this week

"The top three list for this week is closed by Raul Jimenez, who has visibly looked more confident in recent displays against Watford and Everton. However, it’s worth stating that a captaincy punt on the Mexican in Gameweek 30 is certainly more about the opponent than the man himself."

not on FH though … many would have had him for the double and the fact he played Leeds in 30 (I had Hwang instead as bench fodder going forward) but not if they were playing FH in 30, imho

And if one look behind the outcome, they were right. JIMENEZ played 50 minutes and in those he had 2 very good chances, normally Wolves does not create that much. Foresee a red they cant be blamed for and that game were in a state where Jimenez could gave had more chances, in fsct the second yellow situation was one, a little better timed pass and the story would be different.

I’m about 10 points down on FH rivals with teams supported by bench points that’ll probably be 20 by the end of today. One rival has Saka cap, Tierney, White and three Villa (weirdly on the bench) with Antonio to go. Min 38 from 7 players. Simple

Well I have gained 10 points so far on fh but I looked ahead to other weeks and this was the best week to use it. Given that I have just wildcarded, using it another week risks getting MINUS points from it.

19 from 4 so far (missed out on Ramsdale), with Kane(C), Son and Doherty today, no hits. Very happy, certainly been lucky but also feel a little vindicated in a sense to have avoided Wolves defence, I've thought they've looked shaky for weeks, and yes they were a man down of course but their defence completely imploded once put under any pressure, the Rodrigo goal was a disaster of a goal to concede. From an ML perspective very few used FH but very few have Son or Kane so this could actually end up going well with the right result today!

Anyone know what happens if Chelsea make the FA Cup Final, when theyre supposed to have DGWs in both 36 & 37? Double in 38 instead? And if they make UCL final too their schedule is.. f*&%ed beyond repair?

If they make both finals some are suggestions playing Tues and Thurs night in GW37, another option that gives them three days rest between games could be Fri, Mon, Thurs in DGW36, followed by FA Cup Final on the Sunday.

Yes, whatever happens, it would be in that scenario. It has been for others teams in the past the only time the PL has gone beyond the scheduled end of the season was 2020 due to Covid, and all teams still played the final fixture at the same time then.

I am building this backline: Robbo Cancelo Rudiger White. The last spot is problematic between Matip Doherty and Coady. Currently Doherty but may swap to Matip after their game v City.

Id keep Doherty unless he has a couple of poor performances or gets completely dropped.

Doherty at wingback is TAA James level.. attacking numbers are sky high

I need differentials as left behind quite a bit. Matip is appealing with LIV got regular CS and he's silently getting in the box himself. Coady is a cheap solid starter for a back up bench. Tough.

Will have exact same next week, assuming I dont get scared off James by Chelsea's schedule. Currently have Ait Nouri 5th defender but I like Tierney/Doherty rotation & better security 1st bench if/when James/Cancelo rested

and then with a couple of injuries you have one starter coming off your bench ?

Just have Kane with 2 of Hwang, Toney, Broja, Denis etc and bench for tough fixtures with your cheap defenders like White, Davies, Wolves etc. coming in.

It’s just the way it is

            • 4 Years
            3 years, 9 months ago

Thats not the problem. What I mean is, if you have 2 good defenders on the bench, you're forced to play 2 up front and I just don't see any 2nd striker that I want to play every week. So I prefer sticking with Broja 2nd sub, Gelhardt 3rd, and a strong back 5 as above with one of Doherty/Tierney 1st bench

Unless WC, just stick with the cheap forwards you have already. I am with your approach actually. Got Broja and just need to shift Jimenez out for Pukki and I am settled. For the defenders, 3 expensive and 2 solid cheap rotation can work as well.

simply rotate themwith defender - the alternative is two non starting 4.5 forwards which is really not a good idea.

I think a core of any team is
Cancelo TAA James Salah Kane …

Then 3 of (Son Kulu Saka Cout Raph Havertz Foden types etc) & Ramsey / cheapy

Kane and two of Hwang, Toney, Broja, Denis, Puk etc

Still considering FH33, but I don't see a whole lot of value in it with this team, esp if I get Sancho next week (which I think is worth it to target LEI/eve, not just DGW). May do sth like Havertz - Barnes but I'm not too sure about Leicester atm

Good question! My projected team for 36 is completely full of doublers anyway (per Crellin's forecast), so looks like 37 maybe? Not really ideal, but since I played 2nd WC early there may be some value in saving FH2 to see what the beach scenario is like later on. Drafted a FH33 team which squeezes in Vardy & Bruno (alongside Salah, Kane, Sancho etc) with cheap defence but I cant see Bruno getting anything v Liverpool & doubt Vardy plays twice

So it's between the other two, Havertz seems the best but hard to know how much he'll be rotated, a big question I guess is whether you see Tuchel going with Lukaku or him against Madrid? Seems like Lukaku is playing the easier games (for obvious reasons given his form and the difficulty in integrating him into the system) so I'd be worried for PL rotation with Chelsea deep into two other tournaments

Not simple to answer unless knowing your team and your plan. For GW31-32 Havertz as AB faced each other 32. Risk of rotation is the downside. D is a no for me.

Cancelo has taken 60 goal attempts this season.

Guess how many he has scored?

    One.

By the law of big numbers, I'm sure he'll deflect/fluke a few more in, but the guy has a serious accuracy/conversion problem.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

Most are shots from distance, he doesn't tend to get into the box in good shooting positions too often, he's the one that carries the ball the most for City into the attacking third I think and is one of the ones that stretches the play a lot. He's been unlucky as well with a good few near misses and hitting the woodwork a few times

He's a RB (playing LB). He's not expected to score lots of goals.

His xG is 2.9. He scored 1. His xA is 3.3. He has 5 assists.

He is doing as well as expected.

His great for assists, absolutely. But there's an underlying problem there in terms of accuracy/clinical-ness/composure when taking a shot. Even I would score 2 goals from 60 shots.

I'm not saying he is a bad FPL asset by any means. Just that if he didn't have such an embarrassing goal conversion rate he would be getting 7 goals a season

    5. Twisted Saltergater
      • 16 Years

You’re right. I’ve noticed most of his shots come when he’s frustrated their possession hasn’t made a breakthrough. Walker is similar but plays less minutes.

If City had a target man they could cross to, even in the last 15 mins of games, I wonder if we’d see those shots become crosses.

    Current team

    Foster, Ramsdale
    TAA, James, Cancelo, Doherty, Bavies
    Ramsey, Maddison, Raphina, Saka, Salah
    Dennis, Toney, Kane

£0.4m ITB, WC, BB, 2FH remaining.

Was planning on wildcarding this GW but not so sure it needs it now.

Main changes would be Ramsdale to Pope, add Kulusevski and change Kane to Vardy if I WC now.

Would you WC that or just do one transfer?
