Five-time top 1k FPL finisher Tom Freeman on Calvert-Lewin, Wolves and his Gameweek 2 plans

After a disastrous few weeks in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), I’m using this international break to refresh, refocus, and start planning for the run-in.

But first, here’s the state of play:

Pretty awful, right, with the only green arrow of late arriving in Gameweek 26 when I handed Mohamed Salah (£13.3m) the Triple Captain chip. Aside from that, it’s been a thoroughly bleak period, not helped by so many excellent scores in the community, particularly by those wielding multiple chips.

And that’s the point really, for those of you like me who have chosen not to Wildcard, it’s probably been a tough time, too.

To highlight this, I’ve included one of Greyhead’s recent tables (see below), taken from his excellent Great and The Good series. Here, he compares the fortunes of the Gameweek 26/28/29 Wildcarders against a small group who didn’t play the chip, including myself, Neale and Zophar. It’s pretty grim reading, especially with Az grinning just above, having gained a whopping 100 points on me since Gameweek 26.

Having analysed my transfers from this period (see below), I’m honestly not sure I’ve done too much wrong, and if anything, I’ve probably been a bit unlucky.

None more so than in Blank Gameweek 30, when Aaron Ramsdale (£5.1m), Max Kilman (£4.6m), Raphinha (£6.5m) and Gabriel Martinelli (£5.3m) all failed to show up, taking me down to just five starters and another serious rank drop.

Not owning Son Heung-min (£10.9m) and Bukayo Saka (£6.7m) this past week hurt, but it was hard to fit in both Tottenham Hotspur premiums, while I genuinely believe Martinelli is a better Fantasy option than Saka when both players are on the pitch. Blank Gameweek 30 was when I really needed the Brazilian to step up, but illness, of course, put paid to that. On reflection, perhaps I should have backed Saka given his ownership, but I rarely let factors like that influence me, and Martinelli did outscore his more expensive teammate when I made the move, which kind of backs up my initial instincts.

Going back further, Dejan Kulusevski (£6.3m) and Andrew Robertson (£7.2m) did the damage in Gameweek 29, but in the latter’s case, there was no easy route in, and I had to be mindful of Liverpool’s Gameweek 30 blank, too.

Reflecting on a tough period in FPL as I plan for the season run-in 2

However, it’s worth stating that it’s been a period of fine margins in FPL. As Pranil said in his weekly column (go have a read here if you haven’t already, it’s excellent), if you owned two of Reece James (£6.2m), Philippe Coutinho (£7.5m) and Kai Havertz (£7.9m) in Gameweek 28 you were probably fine, even with the captaincy on a below-par Raphinha (yep… that was me).

Now, having got over that initial disappointment we all feel when faced with several red arrows, I’m looking ahead and feeling reasonably optimistic about the run-in, armed with a Wildcard, Bench Boost and Free Hit. In terms of targets, the immediate aim is to get back where I was, as quickly as possible.

Using Ragabolly’s excellent LiveFPL site, you can see I’m 50 points off the top 50k right now. Whilst it’s a lot, it doesn’t feel insurmountable at all, especially given the chips I have in hand.

So, now we’ve got that out of the way, I’m going to discuss chip strategy for the run-in, a few teams/players I’m keeping an eye on, and also my immediate plans for Gameweek 31.

When are we likely to get some visibility on GW36 and GW37 fixtures? I know we won’t know FA Cup Final teams until GW33 but
are they likely to put in some fixtures including conditional fixtures featuring Liverpool, Man City etc before then?

I read it cpild be as early as after 31 deadline (conditional games) but likely to be after FA cup as there are still too many variables with Europe that could scupper plans.

Will probably be announced after GW33, we should have clear idea by the time GW34 arrives.

Pretty much every team is expected to have a DGW, so BB36 should be fine as long as you have 15 starters.

            Not really.

Half at most. Building a BB36 team is harder than it looks because you need to focus on the big 3 teams and their players are expensive.

            1. Holmes
              • 12 Years

Not sure why you need to focus on top 3 teams when its pretty obvious that they will rotate, especially Chelsea and Man City.

Unless you are planning to roll with three premium players, it should be easy to field a decent BB. There are enough cheap options at the moment. Obviously if you intend to get a strong bench with 6m+ players, then its going to be tricky in any week.

Which transfer for this week is better?

    A) Maddison > Havertz
    B) Broja > Weghorst
    C) Roll FT and start one of Maddison/Broja

The problem with A is that I'm hurting my GW33 but on paper the upside of Havertz is better for the next few weeks.
Broja > Weghorst gets me a DGW this week and sets up well for GW33 and leaves BB open because Maddison remains in my team.

I have no idea which line is better. Leaning B because I leave BB33 open but I've been in this situation before where I picked Raphinha in GW28 over Havertz because he allowed me to save FH in 30 since Raph would play and look where that got me...

Do you trust Broja to be an eligible FWD for GW33 BB though? I don't think I do. He's been dropped too often and has not done much at all. Weghorst at least will start every game.

If you told me Broja starts both in 33 I'd do C but I don't know if he does and my team is certainly a player worse this week if I start Broja or Maddison over Weghorst or Havertz.

Havertz over Maddison is not a player better. That's like saying Maddison is nothing this week. Which, as a United fan, I know is certainly not the case.

I got lost with this article when the screenshots and planned moves came in. I find these pieces too specific to one particular person's team.

I prefer the macro approach Tom's taken in previous articles, such as discussing his general strategy towards FPL, and those from Simon March and Lateriser which do similar things.

What rules would you like to see FPL remove, introduce or tinker with to improve the game?

I'd like to see them do away with the bonus points system and replace it with a player rating one, where anyone rated 7.0+ got a point each and a "star man" got three, like in the Sun's game.

they could have an extra tab like team preview or first 11 or something similar like they have the list view tab because it does make it easier but then with the planners that have come out this and last year its become far easier to see future weeks in a first 11 view and make your plans there.

I want to see players no longer docked bps for a yellow card. They already lose a point so that should be enough. A player can lose up to 4pts for a YC if they were on 3 baps, totally disproportionate.

One wildcard as the only chip.

Not wholly sure on what to do with this one but the 3-2-1 baps system feels wrong. 30 baps in one match is meaningless whereas in another it can add 3 points.

Think I'd probably exclude goals, assists and cs from baps and add a threshold for bonus points - something like 20 points is 1 etc. Rewarding tackling and passing etc should/could bring the forgotten 3/4 of mids back into the game.

I'd like to see Bench Boost ditched as a chip and to have something else in it's place. I'd also really like for the man of the match to pick up maybe a couple of extra points (I don't play it but I think Sky Fantasy does this?), I think it would encourage more diversity with some picks of players that may be less likely to pick up returns than others but that tend to be very influential on the pitch.

      Realistic

Change bonus points to be threshold based and not cap them as only the top 3. It gives solid players with lots of minutes a steady stream of 1 bonus making them useful. Also prevents the dreaded 1-1 draw with a goalscorer getting 3 bonus for a penalty when they did nothing else. Rewards demolitions as well with huge points. Exciting.

      20 bps - 1 bonus
      30 bps - 2 bonus
      40+ bps - 3 bonus

      Dream

Change the game to have 8 'attackers'. Forwards and midfielders combined into one pool with scoring the same (midfielder one). Forwards now contribute a lot defensively, often more than wide forwards like Salah, and this rewards them equally by giving them clean sheet points as well.

I'd price natural forwards higher like Mitrovic next season at 8m or something like that to balance it out. It's all in the prices. But at present, forwards are awful value for money and something needs to be done about that.

FYI this bonus system is similar to how things are done in Allsvenskan fantasy.

They are also added in real time which is great, and because they tend to be rewards for positive contributions rather than negative, once they are added they rarely get modified very much. You can easily get a player who gets a couple of both attacking and defending bonus points without getting a classic 'return' and this rewards good players playing well, outside of the traditional rigid fantasy points scoring structure.

Seems Fpl will continue having chips, so in terms of rule changes specific to chips, these are the following -
      1. Have each chip be used in each half of the season. Just like Wildcard can be used in each half, same for the other chips. Will make chips strategy more interesting. Almost every season chips are centered around double GmWks (this season due to Covid issues slightly more variety in chip strategy, but otherwise pretty much everyone plays the chips in similar time). This would give more variety.
      2. The Free Hit chip to have unlimited budget. The name says Free Hit, so budget should not be issue.

I'd have two categories of midfielder; attacking and defensive mids (but you could select up to 5 of either type to fill up your midfield slots). They would score points differently (e.g. more CS points for DMs). This would massively increase the range of players that we'd all plausibly want to use. At the moment all of us are fishing in the same pond of 30 or so players. The game is more fun when there's a wider range of successful strategies available (like we've seen with the chips this season).

Also, I'd have a bigger spread of prices. FPL towers should aim to price every single player at a price that makes them equally attractive based on what we know at the start of the season. Again, more variety = more fun

Agree about the strikers. It’s not working at the moment, traditional strikers are tending to play further back and anyway are few and far between. DMs play a vital role and are treated as bench fodder.

      Regarding BAPS, they need reform:

      - No double-counting (as I have said many times over and has been mentioned above by Wild Rover for one): a big chance created shouldn't be worth more if it becomes an assist, a yellow card shouldn't subtract BPS as well. A penalty save shouldn't be worth more than any other big chance saved.

      - But no 'man in the stands' player ratings either. The whole 'Mark must have player X' wailing, wringing of hands, rending of garments and gnashing of teeth on matchdays when goals/assists/BAPS are not given is bad enough. More subjectivity won't make the game be, or seem, any fairer.

      - There shouldn't automatically be 6 points (more in extreme cases of ties) for every game. Aguero got three BAPS when he scored 5. Ramsdale can get 3 BAPS for passing stats in a game when he didn't even save a shot.

In a terrible 0-0 or maybe a 1-1 with scrappy goals and lots of missed chances and misplaced passes, there should simply be fewer BAPS available. The threshold for 1-3 points should be above certain levels (let's say for the sake of argument 10,20,30 BPS), and only then should the game decide where players within are ranked. If all players score 0-9 BPS except one gets 11, then the player with 11 should get 1 bonus, and that's it.

Price changes happen once a week at the beginning of the gameweek for which they are active. Transfers are not final until the deadline for the gameweek. There is a button on the transfer page that allows you to undo your transfers and revert to your team from the previous week at anytime prior to the deadline. Your transfers for the week are only confirmed when the deadline passes. You wouldn't be able to undo an active chip like WC or FH, but if you transferred in James on Monday and he got hurt on Wednesday you could undo it. And you wouldn't be chasing price rises anyway because you wouldn't know them until the next gameweek! Gameweek transfer in/out numbers wouldn't be confirmed until after the gameweek too (obv).

Basically chasing price rises and falls midweek is not good for the game imo.

Wingers to be classified as forwards.

If you play front 3 then you're not a midfielder really. Even if you have to track back.

I guess this creates tensions in Pep's teams where he wants to rotate players between the attacking lines to improve their overall performance and fluidity in the team. More choice of strikers would be better.

Or a change to squad structure and allow an extra midfielder and just 2 strikers as currently classified

I think the system as it is are fine, for most parts. This threshold thing i understand the argument behind, but to me, one of the things with Fpl is also to be able to predict goalscorers in the 1-1's too, and if A defender for City or Liverpool gets an assist and cs in a game they win 5-0 with zeeo bonus at say 35 bps, thats something you kind of have to calculate in, because the best teams sometimes win 5-0 and you get 3 strikers/midfielders that shares the goals.
If i were to change i would perhaps change the chips, for example they have a double captain (your vice gets double too) and the chip "spissrush" in Eliteserien fantasy which are pretty fun and variance can be extreme.
You can have a chip where you get to captain from each position, like a defender, midfielder and striker in one gw. Double defence chip, where you play your defender with double points instead of captain. (to maximizing this chip you have to play all your 5 defenders) and forgo your usual cap choice, and it will require both planning and restructuring to do it.

Bonus points for players that have been on the pitch for 5 minutes - remove them. Need to be on the pitch longer to earn bps.

I see the author wants to see Player Ratings for bps. That's going back to the "Man in the Stand" method and is too subjective. Let's keep it tangible and quantifiable.

For me, a lot depends on what kind of game one wants this to be, more luck or skill based.
To that extent, I think the price change system needs to be made more transparent and notify on the official site that a player is changing in value. At present, it's information withheld, and adds un fun randomness to the game.
Similarly, you get fully penalised for a value drop but not fully rewarded for player price drop. I can see why it happens, if you didnt lose value until 2 drops, you could do some transfer trickery to gain the value, but combined with not knowing when price changes are happening, its not a fun experience to wake up and see you cant make changes you wanted to due to withheld information.
Transfers. I'd like more free transfers, I enjoy making transfers, it's the interesting bit of the game. I also tend to make more at the start to try to correct pre season mistakes or jump on / off the unexpected performers. To that extent, maybe some sort of transfer bank could be employed? One starts with 10 free transfers, and gain one each week up to a cap of 15. This could be mitigated somewhat by removing a wildcard chip. You could then store up more transfers and have more mini wildcards etc.
As for chips, I don't mind them, but feel bench boost could do with a revamp, as it's an awkward chip to use. Maybe something like "best eleven" where you auto get your best team at the end of the week from the players you have?
I like the suggestions for bps thresholds.
I'd like to see a way for defensive mids to be more viable but don't have an idea that isn't added complication.
Being able to view / set your team weeks in advance would also make planning a little nicer

Oh and as I keep saying whenever posts like this come up:

      - Minus points for scoring an OG (accidental by nature); but
      - No minus points for conceding a penalty (deemed to be deliberate or at least careless by nature regardless of how harsh the decision)?

I think this needs sorting out

Id like to see 2 variants of the game

1 - more chips in a vegas style, adrenaline pumped moves each week

2 - one more focused on planning benefit, reduce transfer cost from 4 to 3, cannot have the same captain each week and no chips

    31. Scotch Jock

      For defenders:

Playing 45 mins in first half and keeping a clean sheet = 1 point
Playing 45 mins in second half and keeping a clean sheet = 1 point
Playing any 60 mins and keeping a clean sheet = 1 extra point
Playing full game and keeping a clean sheet = 1 extra point

Reduces the lottery of your defender conceding a deflected consolation in the 92nd minute, and losing 4 points plus potential bonus points.

Remove captaincy & make wider spectrum of starting prices instead of 0.5m difference make it 0.1m this way we will see more variation in our squads.

As for captaincy in my opinion without it every point would matter and it would force us to have strong whole squads, at the moment good captain pick can cover squad which underperformed you can have 2's and 1's across the board but your captain hauled and you doing better yhan some one who had players returning but bad luck with captain pick.

It's early, hope this makes sense.

It is a simple game. No need to complicate it. A fee tweeks.
      1) No -ve bps for yc
      2) Less points for penalty scored and penalty assist
      3) Not reward forwards so much in bps for goals. It is their job. In fact it is more impressive for a mid to score lots of goals than a forward.
      4) Lose FHs as they are chips that have the highest luck factor and zero planning factor. (example FH29 last year when rubbish picks on paper like Trossard and Veltman got rewarded so big in random fashion)
      5) Some damn transparency about price rises. It is about time really. No price manipulation (we all know it exists), WCs to contribute to to price changes, no price freezing that a player like James is sold by 2m people and lose just 0.2 or whatever in price when he actually rose 0.5 by same amount on transfers in.

      2 things for me:

      1) allow unused free transfers to be rolled indefinitely and not capped at 2 FT's

      2) VC scores 1.5x points (rounded up to help with decimal issues) BUT you get both the C point increase and the VC point increase every week, however, no replacement if either your C or VC doesn't start/play.

No 2 makes it too easy really. There is usually 2 standout picks a week. Everyone will have the same two as C and VC this way. I'd prefer removing captaincy entirely than this.

      • 12 Years
      3 years, 8 months ago

The one change I'd like to see and would be transformational for the amount of strategy and variation we'd see in FPL would be to make hits less punitive. 1 FT a week is tedious and multiple transfers every week hurts you too much to do currently. If hits were made to only cost say -2, we could do so much more with our teams. Triple D chasing would become viable, regularly hitting in and out your premiums becomes more viable, getting that backup striker for a month becomes much more viable. -4 for a hit constrains the game too much. You need a CS or goal to break even on a hit and two returns for a net positive score. -2 for a hit would mean any return is net positive vs an outgoing 2 pointer. -20 to change 6 players is too much currently but you have a fighting chance to be up in a given week if 6 changes only costs -10 instead.
