Michael Laudrup’s first move as manager of Swansea saw Spanish central defender Jose Manuel Flores sign from Serie A outfit Genoa in a deal thought to be in the region of £2m. The 25-year-old arrives on a three-year deal and re-unites with the new Swans boss, having previously worked under the Dane at Mallorca…

The transfer goes some way to addressing the gap left in Swansea’s central defence after Steven Caulker returned to parent club Tottenham following a successful loan spell at the Liberty Stadium last season, with Flores, or “Chico” as he is known, set to partner Ashley Williams in the heart of the back-four. Similar to fellow new boy Jonathan De Guzman, the 6 foot 2 inch stopper revealed the chance to work with Laudrup again was a key factor in his move to the Welsh club, going on to say:

“He knows me as a person and a player, so I was honoured when the call came. I believe the manager will be good for Swansea and they have done extremely well to get him. Swansea’s way of playing is the same style as he wants to play the game. He is the right person to take this club forward. Being brought up in Spain, I have the same culture of possession and passing football. I like to play from the back, come forward with the ball, and add to the possession game.”

The Statistics

The centre-half began his career as an 18-year old with hometown club Cadiz. After a couple of seasons in the reserves, Flores was promoted to the first-team but made just three appearances before being sent out on loan to the Spanish lower leagues during the 2007-08 campaign. Spells at Racing Club Portuense and Barcelona B harvested five goals in 32 games for the clubs before La Liga side Almeria came calling.

Over the course of a couple of campaigns, Flores played 47 times and scored a single goal – his displays in helping the club to a solid 13th place finish in 2009-10 caught the eye of Genoa and the centre-half moved to Italy in the summer of 2010 on a five-year deal. He failed to impress during his one season in Serie A, however, and, with just 15 appearances under his belt in his debut campaign, was loaned to Mallorca last term with the Spanish side given an option to make the deal permanent. Back in his native country, Flores came to the fore and was an integral part of the first-team, making 33 appearances, with his reading of the game and ability to intercept his opponents’ play one of the most impressive across Europe’s top five leagues last season.

The Prospects

While many fear a drop in Swansea’s potential following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, Laudrup is keen for his new charges to maintain their slick passing game as the Welsh club look to avoid “second season syndrome” after last term’s 11th place finish. His ability on the ball should see Flores fit seamlessly into the club’s system and with 14 clean sheets accrued in 2011/12, Fantasy managers may be eyeing up the Swans backline once again.

The major issue this time round is pricing, however. Michel Vorm came in at 4.0 in the previous campaign but his heroics between the posts have already seen his starting price soar this time round, with Fantasy Premier League (FPL) valuing him at 5.5. “Chico” has been handed a 5.0 starting price by the FPL in today’s published price list, putting him on a par with established starters Angel Rangel, Neil Taylor and Ashley Williams. Unless he can display some attacking threat or start soaking up some EA PPI points from king of the blocks, Williams, Flores will surely take a back seat, then.

Intriguingly, Flores has been slapped with a relatively low price in the Sky Sports game in comparison to his defensive team-mates. His 5.0 valuation is considerably less than Williams’ 6.9, with Rangel the next cheapest option at 5.7. In this game, then, the new boy looks an enticing prospect for those Fantasy managers looking for a route into Laudrup’s defence.

A kind opening schedule only furthers his appeal. Home clashes with (WHM, SUN, EVE) in the first five Gameweeks are allied with trips to QPR and Villa and offer Laudrup a strong platform to kick off his career at the Liberty Stadium in style. Whether Fantasy managers will be celebrating every Swansea clean sheet in a similar manner to last season is more than a little unlikely, though.

Had a look at prices only so for my first draft I haven't factored in fixtures (except for chelsea's dgw).
I reckon this team would do well if I left it alone for the season

    Szczesny Mignolet
    Lescott Cole Caulker Harte Tate
    Hazard Sess Walters Moses Johnson
    Torres Aguero Vaz te

Only problem is lack of United coverage.
torres to welbeck gw2 if he doesnt perform or hazard to valencia maybe.
Now to do a thourough analysis of fixtures

          The goalkeepers don't rotate.

None of Caulker, Harte or Tate are first choice.

Johnson won't start many games, Moses is too expensive.

          Vaz Te is pants.

Sorry but I don't like it at all.

Fair nuff, I have 3 weeks of tinkering to correct this monstrosity.
if i were to leave it for the season tate johnson and vaz te would remain firmly on the bench but i admit I believed harte to be a starter. Caulker could definitely earn his place at spurs. but you're right, until I work out rotations, fixtures and which of the promoted teams' players are first choice, any combo will look shite

Evening gents. I smell bargains galore. Do I also smell a rat?
If everything is above board and there's no sting in the tail on rule changes....then, great!..good to go.
It will make for loads of variation in initial squads, which is a good thing.
It will also make for rapid early season price risers, which is good for us lot.
Fiso and TFPL better have their socks pulled up because their services will be needed badly. I can see lots of Sunday/ Monday transfers for me.

      Hey RCA ...

For me, I'm hoping that either the Bonus gets re-jiggered (again) or that another metric is added so that players like DMs can actually become legit choices again.

But I'd bet we're just getting new kit images.

Yeah, DMs becoming a viable pick for your squad would be great.

The real question to be answered for me is playing time ... you'd assume they'd pick him up to play him reliably --

But they just got done paying 35m for a bench jockey, so it's a bit of a mystery right now. But I think if Demps plays regular - he'll perform.

Is Nobody considering Richards at only 6.0??

Surely nailed on when healthy and was pretty darn attacking last season.

    I'm considering him over Lescott.

Think Zabaleta is better defensively, hence Mancini playing him in all the big games at the end of last season. I'd say he's more of a rotation risk than Clichy. Might just get Lescott myself.

Any ideas on my first draft?

    de Gea

    Vertonghen Tomkins Cahill

    - Kagawa - Hazard

    Suarez - Rooney

Have all my subs and 18.5 left for 3 players. Might get Jose Enrique around GW 5.

Don't get me wrong, I like most of those, but:

          DDG - Olympics?
Kagawa - Does he start fit in right out the gate?
          Hazard - the same
          Vert - the same
Suarez - If/when Demps goes through, does that affect him?

They could very well all produce, GW1 ... but I'd be p1ssing blood during the whole gameweek from stress.

Begovic for me. Slight rotation risk, but i think Pulis and most stoke fans know who their no.1 will be going into the season. Begovic is superior and should start the majority.

Stoke may be better now that they dont have Europa League duties.

I've downloaded Isacki's spreadsheet and can't get it to work. The bit on the right hand side of the spreadsheet..."easiest/ hardest fixture" etc. just has all the cells filled up with hash tags and NAME?

On the comparison tool, I think it would be good if you could give more options on the range. It only goes up to the last 6 matches but it would be good if you could type in any number of matches. If you just select all matches it wont be a fair comparison because some players played more than others.

This is silly, prices are seriously low this year. There's no way I should be able to do this:

    Green, Jusi
    Cole, Lescott, Vertonghan, (Cuellar, McCartney)
    Bale, Lamps, N'Zog, Larsson, Noble
    Aguero, Torres, Pog

Bench Larsson in GW1 for Pog's double.

I simply think the prices have become more "closed". Rooney may be .5 less but the cheapest defender/goalkeeper is now 4.5 for example.

The midfield prices are a reflection on the EPL rather than FPL. Silva doesn't score many goals himself.

I think something's gotta give with that defense, even if Ivanovic and Cole are simply for gameweek 1. Its leaving your midfield a bit sparse, and it also leaves you with no Man City or Tottenham attack (this Frisking article a while back sums up why those two teams have strong starts and should be considered.)

I do think DDG is simply too good value to turn down, with him at 6 and the cheapest at 4.5. Ivan over Cole, Kol will steal minutes and points as always, BAE not worth it. Not convinced that Suarez, Lallana and HBA offer immediate VFM.

+1. easy to forget with hart getting the golden glove that man utd actually got the most clean sheets last season. i personally like to compare keepers to their nailed on defensive teammates so DDG is superb value imo

6 aint bad especially if that beautiful man, Vorm is 5.5

But I do like my cheapy keepers with big def or two

I would say DDG is the only underpriced player ATM.

does make some food for thought alrite

He will be a popular pick no doubt, but i remember previous seasons playing it safe with a big keeper at the start and being nothing but annoyed!

Played super safe last season at the start and it got me a cool 1.5 mil rank

Another thing is that I've saved 2m by downgrading Lescott to make a fourth rotator with Ivan as the heavy hitter.

If I'd have downgraded DDG, I would only save 1.5 (fine margins at the back) and ended up with Begovic at the mercy of knee jerk Pulis. No doubt most of his pen saves and clean sheets would end up on the bench too.

I'm also going to find it very hard to break away from the 2 cheap keepers. Under 10m really

Harte is no longer nailed on, because Reading signed a new left-back
You also may want to consider more Chelsea coverage for the DGW

Please RMT. (so far, subject to constant radical change). Also, which of the players divided by slashes should I have?

    Green-Davis
    Vertonghen-Cole/Ivanovic-Ferdinand/Fabio-Tomkins-Villa defender
    Hazard-Bale-Taarabt-Nolan-De Guzman
    Torres-Tevez-Petric

2m extra forTorres to Rooney in GW 2

Is it worth Vertonghen to Kaboul and upgrade elsewhere?
Are there any better budget defensive rotations?
Are there any better 6.0 mids? Lallana perhaps?
