Eden Hazard and Marko Marin both notch on their Chelsea debuts as the Blues taste victory in Seattle, while Gylfi Sigurdsson takes just 10 minutes to find the net in his Tottenham bow. Federico Macheda scores the only goal of the game as United squeeze past South African side AmaZulu, Billy Sharp grabs three for Southampton, Marcello Trotta bags a brace for Fulham and Nathan Delfouneso ensures Villa win again:

Seattle Sounders 2 Chelsea 4
Chelsea’s two debutants both notched on their debuts as Roberto Di Matteo’s side started their pre-season on a winning note. Romelu Lukaku is the only available striker in the Blues travelling squad at the moment and bagged a brace in the 4-2 win, with this performance perhaps suggesting he should be confident of a place in the first-team squad next term, despire rumours of a loan deal. Marko Marin and Eden Hazard both impressed with a goal apiece, with the former also providing an assist for Lukaku’s second. Josh McEachran produced a pair of assists for the visitors but was also at fault for the hosts’ opener before making way at half time. Di Matteo made plenty of changes after the break, with the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Essien, Ramires and new boy Kevin De Bruyne all featuring but, despite the introduction of fresh legs, there were no more goals in the second 45 from the away side.

Chelsea First Half: Hilario; Chalobah, Ivanovic, David Luiz, Ferreira; Mikel, McEachran; Benayoun, Hazard, Marin; Lukaku.
Chelsea Second Half: Blackman; Hutchinson, Ivanovic (Kane 63), Cahill, Ferreira (Saville 63); Essien, Lampard (c); Ramires, Hazard (Kakuta 63), De Bruyne, Lukaku (Piazon 63).

AmaZulu 0 Man United 1
Sir Alex Ferguson started with a front three for the first match of United’s pre-season, with Federico Macheda and Javier Hernandez on either side of Dimitar Berbatov. The likes of Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick added a wealth of experience to a team which included many youngsters making their senior bow for the Old Trafford side. Berbatov was superb throughout, pulling the strings from the central position, and aside from teeing up the game’s only goal for Macheda, was unlucky not to find the net himself on a couple of occasions. Anders Lindegaard was called into action a number of times and was equal to the task, helping the visitors retain their clean sheet, while Shinji Kagawa was afforded a mere two minutes as a substitute towards the end as United comfortably saw out the match.

United Starting XI: Lindegaard; Veseli (Vermijl 46), Wootton, Ferdinand, Brady (Blackett 58); Carrick, Scholes (Tunnicliffe 70), Lingard (Petrucci 70); Hernandez (Kagawa 89), Berbatov, Macheda (Anderson 58).

Stevenage 0 Spurs 2
Andre Villas-Boas rolled out a 4-2-3-1 for his first game in charge at Spurs as the London outfit chalked up a 2-0 win. Youngster Harry Kane led the line, with David Bentley in “the hole†behind and Steven Pienaar and Aaron Lennon on the flanks. At the back, Kyle Naughton was fielded at left-back as Benoit Assou-Ekotto is still recovering from a shoulder operation and Danny Rose is with the Great Britain Olympic squad. Spurs offered little in the first 45 but Villas-Boas made seven half-time alterations, with new boys Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen both handed their debuts; the former needed just 10 minutes to open his Spurs account, with Andros Towsend the creator. Both players could have picked up assists after teeing up Souleymane Coulibaly with chances but the youngster spurned his opportunities to put Spurs further ahead. Right-back Adam Smith set up the second, feeding Iago Falque to put the match beyond the hosts side’s reach late on.

The Spurs boss revealed post-match that his tactics and formation were mainly based on what the current squad are used to – with changes to personnel and team shape expected, Villas-Boas went on to explain:

It’s nothing uncommon with what Tottenham have done in the recent past, playing with the No10 behind the striker…I think it’s what the players at the moment feel the most comfortable with. Of course changes will come when we need them. Eventually we will go to the market when we think it is appropriate. There will not be a lot of changes, but steadily we will bring in players.

Tottenham Starting XI: Cudicini (Friedel 46), Walker (Smith 61), Kaboul (Gallas 46), Dawson (Vertonghen 46), Naughton (Bassong 46), Livermore (Carroll 46), Jenas (Huddlestone 61), Bentley (Townsend 46), Lennon (Falque 61), Pienaar (Sigurdsson 46), Kane (Coulibaly 61)

Étoile Carouge 1 Southampton 4
Nigel Adkins fielded a 4-3-2-1 formation as Saints came from behind to record a comfortable win in Switzerland last night. The Southampton boss started with three of last season’s first-choice back-four, with Danny Butterworth also selected at right-back, while Rickie Lambert was flanked by Guly and Jason Puncheon up front. Guly caught the eye with a strong performance, while Adam Lallana went close on a couple of occasions but, despite their dominance, the visitors went behind courtesy of a Jos Hooiveld own goal. Adkins made nine changes at the break as his side stepped up a gear; Calum Chambers was handed a role in central midfield and provided a pair of assists, while Billy Sharp ran riot and bagged a hat-trick, with fellow-sub Luke Shaw also getting amongst the goals.

Southampton Starting XI: Davis (Forecast 46); Butterfield (Richardson 46), Fonte (Stephens 46), Hooiveld (Seaborne 46), Fox (Harding 46); Schneiderlin (Hammond 46), Ward-Prowse, Lallana (Chambers 46); Puncheon (Chaplow 67), Guly (Shaw 46); Lambert (Sharp 46).

Lokomitive Leipzig 0 Fulham 4
Marcello Trotta was the stand-out performer as Fulham strolled to victory in Germany. Handed a starting role up front, the young Italian notched twice in the first 45 before making way after the break as Martin Jol made nine changes. New boy Sascha Riether impressed at right-back, while Mladen Petric opened his Cottagers account after some fine work by Kerim Frei. With Jol rolling out many of his more experienced campaigner in the second half, Fulham were in complete control and Lauri Della Valle turned in the fourth after a knock down by Mahamadou Diarra.

Fulham, First Half: Stockdale; Riether, Hughes (c), Halliche, Riise; Etuhu, Gecov, Sidwell; Mesca, Trotta, Kacaniklic.

Second Half: Schwarzer; Riether (Brister 70), Baird, Hangeland, Briggs; Davies, Dembele, Diarra, Kacaniklic (Della Valle 70), Petric, Frei

Philadelphia Union 0 Aston Villa 1
Paul Lambert saw his new side racked up their second straight win thanks to Nathan Delfouneso. Starting alongside Darren Bent up front, Delfouneso was a constant menace to the home side and fired most of his side’s efforts as Villa took control in the first half. Ciaran Clark was another who received particular praise from the Villa official website for his display alongside James Collins in the heart of the back-four before making way for Richard Dunne last on. Lambert fielded 21 players last night, with keeper Brad Guzan the only player to manage the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win.

Villa Starting XI: Guzan, Lowton (Lichaj, 60), Collins (Dunne, 66), Clark (Baker, 66), Warnock (Stephens, 60), El Ahmadi (Herd, 56), Holman (Gardner, 60), Bannan (Delph, 56), Ireland (N’Zogbia 46) Delfouneso (Weimann, 52), Bent (Agbonlahor, 52).

Berbs looked like a Pirlo/Xavi/Fabergas combo last night. Dont remember ever seeing him play the central mid before. Was like a man amongst boys. They wanted to put Kagwa in at 80 min and didnt get a stoppage until 89min. Was driving the comentaters crazy.

Yes, but Berbatov was up against a mid-table South African team.

I just don't get why people are raving about his performance. Yes he looked good, but please put it into context!

I remember watching Berbatov in a match for Spurs vs Chelsea a good few years ago. He was brilliant, completely bullying John Terry, outmuscling him constantly and leading the line like a warrior.

As a United fan I love the sparks of class he brings, but what frustrates us is that we know exactly what he is capable of, we want to see him absolutely dominate the opposition defence - he has the talent for it, but it happens too randomly.

I'm only talking about yesterday's match - just buggin me that people are going cuckoo over his performance when it was in a pre-season friendly vs the South African league version of West Brom!

Of course he's a class act, if he was a guaranteed starter he would be a great FPL shout.

I haven't said he isn't good, of course he is.

I'm saying it is a bit pointless raving about his performance yesterday without putting it into context regarding the level of opposition he was facing and the intensity (or lack of) of a pre season friendly.

It's like saying I played brilliantly against a bunch of 12 year olds. Of course I did, they are 12 and I'm 33!

I totally see your point and agree. But also if you look at teams in general in the pre- season they usually do badly because everyone is not in shape. Just look at Man City pre season results so far, they have looked like children so far, so good performance in pre- season cant be too underrated. 🙂

But by the same token a poor performance shouldn't be of concern - many of the "big names" don't put much effort in pre-season either. I've had my fingers burn't by amazing pre-season runs from players then don't get in the first team... (Benayoun, Maxi, Boselli etc!) I think much like England the managers bottle it and place big name player over form due to concern of backlash if it doesn't work out...

I think FPL have been clever this year. It initially looks like the prices are very generous. However they are more bunched up, with fewer bargains to be had. They seem to have taken note of people's tactic of two 4.0 goalkeepers of previous seasons, and also given us fewer options at 4.0 in defence. It will likely mean that there is more variation between people's teams

    De Gea / Federici
    O'Shea / Hangeland / Fabio / Williams / McAuley
    Bale / Valencia / Ramires / Noble / Maloney
    Rooney / Aguero / Graham

My team isn't changing as often now, quite happy to use the 5 team rotation defense thing that someone pointed out the other day than my big+cheap defense. Then I feel like I've got all the big teams covered in attack 'cept Arsenal including Swansea's easy start.

Plus there's a nice spread of prices there for easy replacement so I'm not screwed if someone isn't working out.

    Yeah, happy.

Really good side. Perfect strikeforce and I like Maloney and Noble. I was only gonna pick one but the two are really well priced and gives you a rotation option there which is good.

I prefer Cuellar to O'Shea but that's not a big deal. Ridgewell over Williams also.

If it's anything like last season with cleanies hard to go by a defence like that could suffer when for the same price you could get two of City/United/Chelsea and some 4.5s/4.0s. But Sunderland and QPR in particular I'd back at home, so it could work out.

You have 4 5M defenders, squeeze some money my changing them to 4.5M starters. Then you can get a 6M defender in there.

Not a bad idea at all, thanks.

I'll consider the 4.5/4.0 defenders, but I don't see an AWFUL lot of room for savings beyond O'Shea(5.0)->Cuellar(4.5)

For Fulham; Hangeland (5.0) would have to go to Kelly, Hughes or Baird to save (.5), and they're all below Riise, Senderos, Riether in price/rotation.

QPR is similar with 5 defenders at 4.5 and one at 5.0 so again, it'd be risky relying on one of the 4.0s.

Swansea have 4 at 5.0, and Monk at 4.5, but I don't think it's worth .5 to be stuck with Monk...

          etc. etc.

I think he will get FK's anyway.
IIRC I read a few Spurs fans raving on about how they don't rate VDV's free-kicks/corners and Sigurdsson is a dead ball specialist.

DVD is the only Spur with any free kick credibility - Bale fails time and again, and Walker is probably just a flash in the pan at set plays. Siggy will doubtless get his share, of set plays and game time, but he's high risk at that price for me.

Indeed Mac, if power was the sole contributing factor, he'd be Becks, CR7, Zidane in one. Sadly, it's not. Barns, doors and... well, you get the picture. 🙂

Hey Everyone, not sure if this has already been discussed but last night in the deadzone around 4am UK time, for a brief moment we were able to register for FPL. We went through the the entire questionaire and then were asked to press "submit" it would not let us go any further.

    There, we saw an interesting game twist (or reference to a "sub game");

    “Premier League Player Exchange
COMING SOON A new game for the 2012/13 season from the same team that created Fantasy Premier League. Buy and trade shares in your favourite players each week to develop the most valuable portfolio.”

The players we are linked to all have issues at their current clubs. Milan are interested in these players because there is a chance of getting them on the cheap, or on loan in certain cases. We are not linked with any settled A-list striker.

There have been rumours of some issues with Ibra for a couple of months. Zlatan is ambitious and wants to be part of a winning team. Selling Silva and keeping Ibra wasn't possible because of the lack of ambition it signified.

I don't understand the price we got for him though. Even at his age we should have got far more.

Solid mid-table finish again I suspect. Our defense is tightening up so Foster could be decent.

I see there is a lot of talk about how Chelsea will line up and who is for potential investment attacking wise. First for a teaser I am giving you this picture http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/07/10/article-0-14020738000005DC-661_468x944.jpg 😛

Next: Di Matteowill experiment in pre-season, using Frank Lampard in the withdrawn role in which he excelled during the Champions League. He will sit in front of the back four alongside John Mikel Obi or Ramires.

Then come the little men. The plan is for Marin, Hazard and Mata to work behind Torres, providing the £50m striker with enough chances to finally kickstart his Chelsea career. The trio will have the licence to swap positions, making them difficult to mark and track.

Oscar, set to be the latest addition to the revolution, can replace any of them. He will need to as Chelsea’s fixture list will pile up with the campaigns in the Premier League, Champions League, World Club Cup, FA Cup and League Cup.

Well Nando if you don't deliver after this service you'll never deliver. Than give a chance to Lukaku he'll score surely .

Very nice summary. I agree with that. So Lamps maybe not worth investing in playing in the deeper role or yes as he still takes pens?

Well Ramires could replace anybody on the right wing or sit back with Lamps. I still think that Lamps has that instinct of coming late in the box and scoring. Also he is on penalties. I need to see signs about game time of Hazard. If he is played near to 90 min I guess he is the pick to have. My thoughts:

          Hazard - potential big heater
Lamps - steady approach relying on penalties and occasional goals.
Marin - flair pick especially for the start of the season.

If we sign another striker then i can definitely see it happening. Would be a great move for us if it was to happen. I know when the window opened that De Bruyne was almost certain to go to Southampton. For some reason it didn't happen and everything went quiet.

he excelled there last season in the biggest games and can run all night without getting tired. I suspect there'll be more rotation on the other side between Mata/Hazard/Marin but with Ram pretty constant.

The thing about Bale last season was clearly Harry just told him to do what he wants, sometimes it was great, but then he ended up on the right and was ineffective. AVB is so precise tactically and I think Bale could be exactly the player to benefit from it.

Please RMT - 1st one of the season.

Struggling to find the right balance but I think this is as good as it's going to get at the moment until a few of the transfers etc sort themselves out.

    Reina

    Cole, Clichy, Coloccini, (Fabio, Nelson)

    Lampard, Valencia, Dembele, Park (Noble)

    Aguero, Suarez, Ba

I can't find any value besides Noble for midfielders under 6.0

    Any thoughts?

It's different. Liverpool's early fixtures aren't great. Is Collocini 5.5? If so I'd rather have Kaboul or Koscielny or save .5 and get Hangeland. Nelsen unlikely to be a regular. Lampard may be playing very deep.
Like the Ba punt if he's still around.
