Have Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers got a bargain on their hands with Djed Spence (£4.5m)?

Tottenham Hotspur’s sixth summer signing has joined permanently from Middlesbrough for an initial £12.5m, following a fantastic year on loan at Nottingham Forest that ended with promotion.

We assess the 21-year-old right-sided defender in our latest Scout Report.

THE HISTORY

Having previously spent time at Fulham’s academy, Spence arrived at Middlesbrough in 2018 aged 17.

SeasonTeamDivisionStarts (Sub on)GoalsAssists
2021/22Nottingham ForestChampionship41 (1)24
2021/22MiddlesbroughChampionship2 (1)00
2020/21MiddlesbroughChampionship22 (16)10
2019/20MiddlesbroughChampionship18 (4)10

It wasn’t until Jonathan Woodgate became manager that Spence was integrated into first-term action, making his league debut halfway through the 2019/20 season and immediately landed the EFL Young Player of the Month award.

Once Neil Warnock arrived to help Boro avoid relegation and stayed on for the 2020/21 campaign Spence’s game time began to suffer.

Warnock’s initial 3-5-2 wing-back system started to become a four-man defence. That, combined with the January arrival of Darnell Fisher, restricted Spence’s appearances. Between February and May 2021, he started only seven of their 19 matches, being unused a further seven times.

Therefore, when Isaiah Jones burst onto the scene at the start of last season, Warnock suddenly had two excellent young talents fighting over the same position. Having previously doubted Spence’s attitude by saying he’ll either end up at the very top or at non-league, Warnock loaned Spence to Nottingham Forest.

“For me, I’d say I try to bring excitement, skill and speed when I play… I just want to excite the fans and to play well. I think that’s the most important thing – when you excite your team and your fans and play well, it breeds confidence, and confidence is one of the biggest things in football.” – Djed Spence

Things greatly improved under Steve Cooper, the head coach that had previously won the Under-17s World Cup with England. He knows how to develop young talent and clearly saw potential in Spence.

At the City Ground, Spence started every game barring the two against parent club Middlesbrough and one on the final day of the season. Although a stand-out player during Forest’s surge up the Championship, it was the three FA Cup games versus Premier League opposition that introduced Spence to a wider audience – highlighted by a wonderful goal against Leicester City.

His attacking stats were actually quite underwhelming last season, scoring just twice in the league and assisting on four occasions.

With an expected goals (xG) tally of 1.7, the right wing-back ended on 24 shots (one every 153 minutes) and 43 chances created (CC, one every 85.6 minutes). They’re hardly compelling figures, when we look at what Spurs’ existing wing-back options were serving up in 2021/22:

Alongside this is three caps for England’s Under-21s.

PLAYING STYLE

Averaging 0.5 crosses per game didn’t rank Spence highly among Championship defenders but his dribbling did. By contributing 1.8 successful dribbles per game, he placed at joint seventh, where only Ethan Laird had a better rate from defence.

Data provided by WhoScored

And that’s part of the main package that Spence offers Spurs. He combines some very good dribbling and ball carrying with brilliant acceleration.

However, he is far from the complete package and needs to improve his first touch, decision-making and defensive positioning. If that became clear in the second tier, how quickly he can adapt to the top-flight is now the big question.

WHERE SPENCE FITS IN AT TOTTENHAM

This feeling of Spence being more of a developmental signing is backed up by Conte’s comments on the deal. Although perhaps taken out of context by the press, trying to twist it as a dig at his higher-ups, the Italian is essentially just saying that Spence is a player of potential.

“Spence is an investment of the club. The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.” – Antonio Conte

Therefore don’t expect him to be a viable FPL asset for a while. As of now, Spurs have a staggering six wing-backs, with Spence, Emerson Royal (£5.0m) and Matt Doherty (£5.0m) on the right alongside Ivan Perisic (£5.5m), Sergio Reguilon (£4.5m) and Ryan Sessegnon (£4.5m) on the left.

With Reguilon and Emerson Royal expected to be sold, FPL managers may be tempted to begin the season with Doherty. The Irishman bagged 55 points from the six games that preceded his season-ending knee injury and could return to action while Spence has a bedding-in period.

IS SPENCE WORTH BUYING IN FPL?

A further complication came from recent Conte comments on midfielder Lucas Moura (£6.0m).

“I spoke with Lucas and I think that this will be a good option for me and in the past I converted Perisic in that position. [Victor] Moses was the same. [Antonio] Candreva was the same. Before a winger and then to become a wing-back. For sure he has great quality Lucas and I think this could be a good option. He can play behind the striker, on the right, on the left, as a wing-back.” – Antonio Conte on potentially using Lucas Moura at wing-back

So that’s potentially seven wing-back options for Spurs. If they struggle to offload a couple by Gameweek 1 and Perisic continues to have a light pre-season, FPL managers may reluctantly avoid their defensive assets for Southampton (H) – particularly with Conte’s track record for substituting on and off his wing-backs.

It would be a shame because the great run of early fixtures also offers strong clean sheet potential against Wolverhampton Wanderers (H), Nottingham Forest (a) and Fulham (H).

With Spence evidently being a signing for the future, it’s a ‘don’t buy just yet’ situation. Should he eventually establish himself as the starting right wing-back in a side that is very capable of recording shut-outs, however, he will make a mockery of his initial £4.5m price tag.

FPL Marc Broadcaster, writer and overthinker. Hoping that ‘differential potential’ will catch on.

Made a few tweaks. Did Mendy -> Ramsdale so I could have James and Chilwell with Mount in midfield. Good move?

Is Chilwell nailed? I'd like him at some point but he's firmly in the wait and see category for me.

I don’t love it really, Chelsea defence was very disappointing at times last season, I’d be happy to start with 1 but I’d only double up on city and Liverpool at the back

Morning all, bit of a bandwagon post about Darwin

Hes good in the air, 6 headed goals last season - saying thats the highest in Europe (was from a twitter post so apologies if incorrect), so Trent and Robertson crossing/set pieces should be great this season
Poached some yesterday too - yes only a friendly, but again with crosses into the box

Im finding it hard to ignore him and put both Roberton and Trent in team too.

I know its more of a wait and see, but just looking at the savings alone with going no Salah makes my team look a lot better.

The obvious problem is captaincy, I have Kane who is there, but the FOMO with Salah even though it makes my team a lot better, im finding harder and harder to ignore

Salah is as we know a goal machine and more or less greedy, just say Darwin starts on fire, the focal point to crosses into the box etc. How do you think Salah will react to that? More greedy? Darwins size makes him great at holding up the ball for players like Salah and Diaz too.

Bit of a random worded post so apologies for that. In 2 minds really, 1 team without Salah but having a great team and hoping Kane/Darwin and tbh, even a Jesus captaincy thrown in now and again against a team that isn’t as good on paper, but has Salah in it which ill most likely be captaining most weeks.

I know a lot will be clearer after community shield – but what are people thinking so far?

My current team doesn't have Salah, which allows me to fit in Robertson. I have Diaz instead of Darwin. I'm not convinced, and suspect I'll revert to having Salah in my team before the deadline, but, like you, feel that my team without Salah is stronger across the board, with no enablers playing in my starting 11.

      Ramsdale (4.0)
      TAA Robertson Cancelo James Chilwell
      Saka Mount Diaz 4.5 4.5
      Haaland/Kane Jesus 4.5

No need to apologise, it's a good post with some interesting points. Essentially the same dilemma that many of us face every year... can we go without Salah?

You're right, Liverpool do have plenty of options for you to feel happy with owning 3 of them outside Mo (Allison, Robbo, TAA, VVD, Diaz, maybe Darwin). But you're also right, it's hard not owning him and he gives you a clear captain and will keep you up with the masses when he hauls. I don't mind spreading my caption options around so would happily give the C to Kane and Haaland, or Son, or whoever else hits form (a la Antonio and Bowen). You just need a big sofa!

Thanks for your reply - yes its difficult, Salah signing a new contract was a no brainer putting him in. But the 4mill difference is too big to ignore for me. Plus now im going 433 with Jesus, Kane and Darwin up top, i no longer have to have a 4.5 striker as bench fodder now. Which for me is another benefit

Popped him in my team. Not sure about him because he doesn't look like an amazing footballer from what I've seen, and his goals yesterday weren't very impressive. But there must be a reason he was bought, and he will get chances when in the team. Just wondering if we're all sleeping on Jota. If he's fit for GW1, we could see a lot of disappointment, since he pretty much ousted Firmino last season and looks better on the eye from where I'm sitting. There's no reason to believe he's going to be backup. Or is there? I guess I don't know anything much about this topic, so I shouldn't even be typing. Okay, bye!

Could go either way couldn't it? Having Nunez as a focal point for crosses and in the 6 yard box could mean he's nicking some of Salah's goals but could also create more space for Salah.

Nunez was interchanging position with Diaz a bit on LW yesterday as well so while he's a more traditional CF than Liverpool have had for a while, I'd still expect it to be fairly fluid.

haha nah good shout. Jota, but also Firmino - Firmino played great 1st half yesterday. So there is the down side of Darwin being slowly put into the team for players like Jota and Firmino.
Jota can also play on either side, so he could be an impact sub for Diaz and might not bother Darwins play time - but Firmino will

Lioverpool Fan here, thinking round these parts is that Diaz / Nunez / Salah will be first choice.

Dont think Jota will be fit, which means Nunez more likely to be thrown straight in, I just cant see us starting the season with Firmino. COuld be wrong ofc.

Nunez is in my team, has been since first draft.

Thanks nice to get an insight from a Liverpool fan. Darwin looks like the real deal even last season in CL he was prolific. All is well at Liverpool with a front 3 of Salah / Darwin / Diaz. I’m even tempted by Darwin at 16/1 to be top scorer. Do you also have Salah ?

My initial thoughts from watching highlights of him from last season was that he isn't a great finisher but his positioning and movement in the box is excellent so he'll score goals even if not clinical, reminiscent of Jota I suppose except he is a strong runner. He also likes to peel off his man when the ball is wide, particularly when the ball is on the right so I do think TAA will benefit a lot when he's on the pitch, I don't like making such comparisons but he really does seem to have fantastic aerial ability and athleticism like Cavani.

Do I think he can match Salah? I mean we're talking about someone who's worst season resulted in 22 goals with 27 total attacking returns, and who has no World Cup to prepare for or go to and has no contract issue hanging over his head this season. Nunez is 4m cheaper of course which makes a difference depending on how well you use it. Are you going to captain him? Can you rely on him to start every week? You'd have to say no. I think he'll have his time where he'll be a very worthwhile asset, I don't think he's a "bad" option to start with but 9m is a lot for someone that will have to settle a bit and will be managed to protect him, and I think early on unless you're planning on putting money into your bench it's best to go with players you know will play and can rely on, especially at 9m

Thats a negative yes, the captaincy issue. If i put captain on Salah and he flops, so what, 90% has probably captained him too.

    TAA Cancelo Digne Tomiyasu N.Williams
Luis Diaz Foden, Guimaries Benrahma Cafu (any 4.5's likely to play?)

Yes I was thinking that. could upgrade a couple of Mids if I swapped Haaland or Kane for a low value striker! I'll have a think.

Agree re FOMO on Salah, however for 1.5 seasons you had to have him, he was too good not to. Second half of last season he didn't seem as good.

I like Benrahma a lot at 6.0, feels overlooked and he's been in my draft a few times.

Personally think your def is too weak and your forward line too top heavy. But if you're settled on it then I would reconsider your 8.0 midfielders - you've gone for 2 of the lowest scoring 8.0s from last year.

      Good but risky.

Kulu may be more limited with Richarlison and UCL football for them to compete in, this is mitigated slightly by a sep wildcard.

Martial is a risk but looking good I just worry if you've got 4.0, 4.0. 4,5 and then Kulu and Martial don't start you're in a bit of trouble.

I'd downgrade once of your 8.0 as with the other 3 you can get rid of the one underperforming if any of the others hit-form easily.

I'd go Odegaard, Martinelli or Rashford saving you 1.5-2 to either upweight Martial, your 3rd def and possibly a more nailed bench player.

Backline is currently Ramsdale, TAA, Cancelo, James, Trippier, Gabriel.

I'm considering downgrading TAA and Cancelo to 5.0 defs (Doherty, Cash?).

Figure this is trading off around 140 points for 4.5 million, which will allow me to upgrade to a Salah + 4 x 8.0 mid + Allisson while maintaining a backline of starting defenders with potential for G/A

Looks like Darwin has really spiced up the Mo or No Salah debate which is great for the game.Personally think I start along with Trent and Robbo and see how things pan out up top for Pool. PL and CL group lineups may start to offer clues

I think Darwin is a very, very clear wait and see.

Not only are the three Liverpool slots valuable, we don't know enough about him or how he'll adapt into Klopp's system. I have 0 interest to start the season with him.

I am most worried about reshuffling the team if the 11.5 fwd bracket and Jesus are firing.

Outside of Salah finding 4.5m to turn my 3rd forward if Darwin hits form is a 3 transfer move.

Will likely be Diaz plus which ever of my 3 premium def not performing to save the money

Nope. Grealish / Bernardo / Foden / Mahrez / Alvarez all rotation risks. This is why Haaland is so important as a City attacking pick.

Ederson and Allison more points same price.
Cheaper goalkeepers save 0.5 or 1m to spend elsewhere.
Thinking attacking defenders are what attract at Spurs if knew who started.

    1. Bobby_Baggio
      • 14 Years

Don't do it keep TAA and Cancelo. I'd downgrade James to 4m

    2. UnluckyXI
      • 8 Years
      3 years, 4 months ago

You'd then have a 5 man backline & 5 man mid all wanting to be played so one is getting benched every week.

Therefore I'd downgrade one of them or James and Gabriel to Tomi plus a 5.0m

This gives you 1.5-3.0m back and I think about 13-15m to play with for your last 2 mid spots.

So you could still play a solid back 4 with Tomi otb, Salah, 3 * 8.0 and a 6.0m and then which ever highest priced fwd you have.

    Yet another tweak:

    Meslier | (Klaesson)
    TAA | Cancelo | Trippier | Doherty | (Neco)
    Salah | Son | Mahrez | Rashford | (Andreas)
    Jesus | Alvarez | (Archer)

Alvarez could provide fantastic value IF he gets regular minutes (which with 5 subs you would think is a possibility?)

Personally I'm not a huge Neto fan - low scoring team and no real historical pedigree (best of 5G & 8A in 20/21), plus still recovering from the serious knee injury that kept him out for most of last season.

Greenwood is highest owned 4.5 forward and therefore most likely to reduce in value when people start wildcarding.

Not sure how Toney will fare now that Eriksen has gone, as it seemed that most teams had started to work out Brentford prior to Eriksen joining and providing that quality they were lacking in mid.

I like the KDB pick - but no Spurs attacker feels off - given how they finished last year.

I have Kulu in many of my drafts too.
But just to say (and I think I made this point on a previous post) - 'Kulu is nailed' is only applicable for GW1 as Richarlison is only suspended for GW1, not 1&2 as I think you believe.

    1. Invincibles

Just keep 1 8.0m mid. Too many options at that price point. You need to be able to get one of Saka, Diaz, Kulu, Mount without multiple transfers.

      1. Fatboy_Slim
        • 8 Years
        3 years, 4 months ago

        My team is currently:

        Raya, 4.0
        Robertson, Chilwell, Cancelo, Dalot, Neco
Salah (c), Mount, Diaz, Neto, Andreas
Kane (switch to Haaland GW2), Jesus, 4.5

So already have two 8.0 mids...hence considering the move for Raya+Diaz+Jesus to Ramsdale/Ederson/Mendy+Martinelli+Darwin

        Thoughts?

I've doubled up on James and Chilwell too... but almost purely on their ability for attacking hauls. Definitely wouldn't risk the triple up in defence.

Points per game I expect them to be very similar... Cucu IMO is far more clinical in what he does going forward than Cancelo (see Cancelo stats for last season - actually underperformed according to his XGI)

However Cancelo is about as nailed as anyone can be in a Pep side as it stands. Bar any injury to Cancelo or Walker, Cucu is a huge rotation risk

        1. PartyTime
          • 4 Years

Fair enough. Think Cucu could nail down a place in the starting xi & also good at getting baps overall, thus, probably better for value
