Next up in our price list dissection is Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forwards that cost between £4.5m and £6.0m. We pick out the best options in a category that looks sparse.

With unlimited transfers allowed during the World Cup downtime and a Wildcard to use before then, we’re focusing mostly on Gameweeks 1-8 for these articles.

Opta stats on the players featured in these articles are available in our Premium Members Area, where you can now get a full year’s subscription for just £2.49 a month.

BRYAN MBEUMO (£6.0m)

As of now, very little stands out in the £6.0m-and-under category of forwards due to a mixture of poor teams, poor fixtures and the uncertainty of rotation. Bryan Mbeumo slays those demons, at least.

Two goals from his first two pre-season outings looks good, following a solid FPL season of four goals, seven assists and 119 points. A league-high six of Mbeumo’s shots hit the woodwork, suggesting more than a degree of bad luck, while he was also seventh amongst midfielders for shots on target (56).

Yet his poor shot accuracy (26%) and goal conversion (5.2%) rates were a problem. Combine that with his reclassification as a forward, where penalty-taking teammate Ivan Toney costs just £1m more, and his appeal starts to drift a tad.

Since Thomas Frank switched to a 4-3-3 in the final quarter of 2021/22, he’s also been playing in a wider role rather than up top in a 3-5-2.

Another factor is Brentford’s form without Christian Eriksen (£6.5m). Before the Dane made his full debut in Gameweek 28, they had just one win from their previous 11 encounters and were spiralling down the league. With Eriksen now at Manchester United, the Bees will need a new creative source.

BRENNAN JOHNSON / TAIWO AWONIYI (£6.0m)

Nottingham Forest use a 3-4-1-2 system, so both Brennan Johnson and Taiwo Awoniyi are expected to start up top ahead of new signing Jesse Lingard (£6.5m) in the hole. It’s a formation that brought 70 goals during Steve Cooper’s 41 league and play-off matches, with Johnson scoring 15 times in the final 28 of those games.

On penalties and heavily involved in set plays in pre-season, he also ended the campaign with ten assists, although some of the FPL community were disappointed to see him labelled as a forward.

Positional data from Transfermarkt

24-year-old Awoniyi has arrived in a deal believed to be worth £17m. As mentioned in our recent Scout Report, he is a strong dribbler and finisher, having also played in a similar formation at Union Berlin to end last season on 15 goals from 31 appearances. He’s looked a tad off the pace in pre-season, however, so may take a while to get up to Premier League intensity.

As a newly-promoted side that has lost several significant loanees from last year, it feels like Forest need to be watched before a purchase is made, especially with back-to-back Gameweeks against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City. Gameweek 6 could be a good time to pounce, if the signs are encouraging.

DOMINIC SOLANKE (£6.0m)

If it wasn’t for the freakish number of Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.5m) goals in last season’s Championship, the exploits of Dominic Solanke would have gained much more attention.

The one-cap England international initially gained Premier League experience during his first year at Liverpool but, halfway through the 2018/19 season, grabbed headlines with an eye-watering £19m move to Bournemouth.

His reputation was damaged by only netting three times in one-and-a-half top-flight seasons but the 24-year-old has slowly rebuilt it with 15 goals in 2020/21 and another 29 in 2021/22.

He has been a nailed starter under Parker to date, is on penalties (he converted four of the five spot-kicks he took in 2021/22) and is something of a talisman, having played a direct part in just under 50% of the goals that the Cherries scored in their promotion-winning campaign – and that’s without looking at ‘Fantasy assists’ for things like shot rebounds.

For a player whose game involves dropping into deeper positions, all 29 of his league goals came from inside the opposition area, with the vast majority being close-range strikes.

The Cherries aren’t attracting attention from FPL managers and a difficult start is likely part of this with trips to Man City and Liverpool to come by Gameweek 4. As is the case with Forest, the fixtures look better once we get towards September.

OTHER CANDIDATES

If Deniz Undav (£5.5m) and Julio Enciso (£5.0m) were the clear first choices at Brighton and Hove Albion, they’d be extremely popular picks amongst the community. Signed by the Seagulls in January, Undav continued the season in Belgium with Union SG to eventually finish on 25 goals.

This followed two successive campaigns with 17 strikes, showcasing a wonderful scorer’s instinct. However, the FPL problem regards Graham Potter’s rotation tendencies.

There are also occasions where Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) is deployed as a false nine. Minutes continue to be shared during pre-season, as Brighton’s first friendly saw separate XIs for each half and the second – a 4-1 win over Estoril – brought a goal for Undav but also two for Neal Maupay (£6.5m).

It’s similar at Crystal Palace, although their difficult run of early fixtures can at least give managers time to observe. Between them, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Odsonne Edouard and Christian Benteke (£5.5m) bagged 15 goals and six assists but only Edouard ever started more than four consecutive games.

Many FPL managers are planning to start with at least one £4.5m forward, such is the number of defensive and midfield temptations. Unless Liam Delap (£4.5m) moves to Southampton, as rumoured recently, there aren’t any real stand-out names.

Sam Greenwood (£4.5m) could continue to see minutes as a substitute at Leeds (often deeper than his Fantasy position suggests), while Cameron Archer (£4.5m) is a promising talent but ultimately at least third in line for a striking spot at Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Adam Armstrong (£5.5m) could benefit if the Saints fail to buy another forward but the likelihood of Patson Daka (£6.0m) or Chris Wood (£6.0m) getting significant game time is small as things stand.

Should we expect every game next weekend (CS or friendly) to be pretty much how each team would lineup for GW1? Or do teams still experiment?

I've seen so many Community Shields where the stars of the show are never seen once the PL begins.
Loads will also play late friendlies but will not be fit to start the season. So, no guarantees.

    A) James Diaz Sancho Jesus

    B) Zinchenko Saka Bailey Kane

    Thoughts on this 442 team?

    Meslier
    TAA. Cancelo. Gabriel. Dalot.
    Salah. Mahrez. Maddison. Martinelli.
    Kane. Jesus.

    Klaesson. Neco. Andreas. Archer.

leeds defensive was very poor last season so Meslier will concede a lot of goals im not sure if hes saving potential will help him be a decent fpl assets. Its a huge risk thinking a new manager will make leeds a more defensive in the back.

For your defenders, you dont have james or chilwell. No chelsea defenders could hurt you

and for your midfielders, we dont know for sure if Mahrez will start or if he’ll start and then get subbed off. Anyways you are playing what you call the pep roulette with that one lol. But if he starts most games Mahrez or Foden are great picks

lastly, your forwards. I know Jesus hit the ground running scoring goals in the pre season but that doesnt mean hes going to do that in the premier league matches so im so sure about him. Also, Arsenal just dont score as much goals as team like man city, liverpool, spurs and chelsea

i hope so too to be honest because at 8.0m price bracket thats a great price and cheap but then again. The stats say hes not that good, when he was at man city last season he only accumulated 120 points and the season before that 115 points. The maximum points Jesus has ever accumulated was 146 points. The point is hes not likely going to reach those points again playing for Aresnal a player at 8.0 should at least be accumulating over 150 points and we all know man city score the most goals and aresnal dont lol. Jesus points this season will drop dramatically but just wait and see anyways

"The point is he's not likely going to reach those points again playing for Arsenal..."

            How do you know this?

Rarely played as a CF for City as they had him on the bench or wing most games and now has signed for a team where he is their number 9.

He could, and I think it's very likely, going to make a mockery of that £8m price tag...

i know for a fact Jesus won’t score over 150 points he is lucky to make it too around 120 points and thats saying something lol. Have you already forgotten? He was a CF at City, City has most of the ball most of the possession against any football team in the world. If hes going to make a mockery of hes price tag he should of done it at City not at Arsenal.. Arsenal arent isnt going to be controlling games much and they going to be feeding him much either thats what we know. He is going to score less points on fpl that what he did at man city it doesnt take a rocket science to figure that one out

"Not completely true for at least half his city career he was used as striker. Even kept aguero out a lot. Pep preferring him on the wing is only last season or two. And of course he scored way better as a striker. Still the point remains playing anywhere in that city front three will mean a large increase in goal oppietunties and involvement in the box. 30 g+a in 3800 league minutes as a wide player in a striker less system. Highly doubt his next 3800 mins will 30 g+a"

You are forgetting that he is going to play an extra 1000 minutes at least and probably start at least 12-15 more games at CF, if he stays fit he'll comfortably hit 180 points

wrong, 180 points are numbers what only kane and vardy will hit. Haaland wont even get that much nor ronaldo. Just do the maths.. Jesus accumulated 120 point points for man city within 2000 minutes played so that means 2000 minuted played for Arsenal will be less than 120 so lets says around 80-100 points but since we think hes going to be playing 3000+ minutes which should be around 120-140 points and thats not worth 8.0m at all

Flip a coin. I don’t think any premium priced player is essential as they’re all good, but you can only have 2 (maybe 3 is you’re pushing it)

I’d say TAA is most essential out of your list as he offers something no other defender does imo

KDB Diaz Neto (One premium who I love, an 8m mid which I think is important this season and then my enabler)
          Kane Jesus (Enough said)
4.0 Andreas Colback (both nailed I think?) Archer (most likely to get some minutes but hopefully Delap goes Soton)

Nice, not far off mine, only fair I share.

            Ederson
            TAA Cancelo Zinch Trippier
            Salah Diaz Neto Rashford
            Kane Jesus.

Wanted double City def, Ederson/Zinch cheaper than Rams/Dias

Consider DaSilva at Bre over Colback. Good luck!

Is it silly to have triple Arsenal?

Absolutely destroyed pre season and have a favourable fixtures.

I’m not sure Martinelli is going to start. Saka, Ode, Jesus and the back 5 all options.

No not silly with their fixtures, and early WC available. I am on double, only want to triple up on Liv or City

Not silly but I still don't trust them. Martinelli has a lot of competition from Nketia and ESR when fit. Jesus looks awesome so far. Only Gabriel and Ramsdale look like decent options from their back 5 to me.

Maybe a gut instinct. Also rumours he wants to play in midfield, so could be OOP when Tierney is fit. 4 assists in limited mins last season isn't awful.

Saliba and White at 4.5 are bargains and I think both start the season. White at RB as Tomiyasu is a perma crock

If Tomi returns GW3, who do you think he replaces? I've kind of gone off the Arsenal 4.5e at the moment just because of the uncertainty but I would still really like to have one of these guys as 1st sub

In preseason Edouard hasn't played a minute as centre forward at Palace I believe. Mateta is the overwhelming favourite to play there and his competition if any is more likely Benteke who - holding my breath - may be transferred out.

Only likely to be good for 70 minutes each week and fixtures foul but as it stands 5.5 Mateta seems stand out favourite to start the season. Not bad for a reasonably prolific mid table team. Also if you analyse last season he was more or less nailed when he took over the spot. There was far less flux there than imagined. The games he missed were generally because of fixture congestion from the cup and DGWs.

After Chelsea last two pre season games I’ve upgraded James for Robertson and downgraded Dias for Grealish. My only concern is Grealish’s minutes.

    Thoughts?
    A - James and Diaz
    B - Robertson and Grealish
    C - Robertson and Foden

    Mendy

    Trent Perisic James Trippier

Slightly different teams, not sure which one I prefer, also not sure about Chelsea defenders now!

    Ederson

TAA / Cancelo / Zinchenko / Ait Nourri

    Salah / Diaz / Mount / Bailey

    Kane / Jesus

    Caballero | Andreas | Williams | Archer

    ---------------------------------------------

    Ederson

    TAA / Cancelo / Zinchenko / James

    Salah / Diaz / Martinelli / Neto

    Kane / Jesus

Caballero | Da Silva | Williams | Archer

Kane and KDB in my squad atm. Son and Haaland are still desirable. All have had a good preseason, but I feel that Kane and KDB can cover the other two and it is easy to change.
Haaland has the injury history to worry about and Son is getting old for his style of play and has probably ( maybe) done more traveling during the off season than the others.

I am getting very close to my most preferred team barring a couple of positions...which do you think is the best team to start with?

    1) Sanchez
    TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, James
    Salah(c), Mount, Bailey, Neto
Kane (switching to Haaland GW2), Jesus
    Sub: 4.0, Neco, Andreas, 4.5

    2) Sanchez
    TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, James
    Salah(c), Rashford, Martinelli, Neto
Kane (switching to Haaland GW2), Jesus
    Sub: 4.0, Neco, Andreas, 4.5
    0.5 itb

    3) Sanchez
    TAA, Robertson, Cancelo, James, Perisic
    Salah(c), Rashford, Neto
Kane (switching to Haaland GW2), Jesus
    Sub: 4.0, Bailey, Andreas, 4.5

I could downgrade Robertson to Neco and upgrade mid to Diaz, which gives more flexibility, but just have a feeling that Robbo has more points potential...

    Thoughts?

I prefer A, maybe downgrade Robertson and upgrade Sanchez/Neto. Also wouldn't recommend having a preplanned G2 transfer, gives you less leeway to adjust for unexpected fires.

I could always go to Perisic instead of Robbo, and upgrade midfield and have Diaz....but just feel at 1.0 lesser Robbo is the better option compared to Diaz...thoughts?

Agreed on the Diaz vs Robbo logic, but not sure I’d get Perisic yet. We don’t know yet how often he’ll be playing for 60+ minutes
