FPL team guides: Brighton – Best players, predicted line-up + more

Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is drawing ever nearer and we’re profiling all 20 Premier League teams before the season starts.

After weighing up what ArsenalAston Villa and Brentford players have to offer, we continue our team-by-team guides with Brighton and Hove Albion.

You can check out our Nottingham Forest, Fulham and Bournemouth analysis in our Promoted series, articles that will be refreshed before the big kick-off.

LAST SEASON: ATTACK

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals scored4215th=
Shots4897th
Shots in the box29810th=
Shots on target14614th
Big chances6311th
Expected goals (xG)54.459th

Underdelivering on some decent underlying stats has become a feature of Brighton seasons.

In each of their five years as a Premier League club, they have scored with fewer than 10% of their shots – ranking them in the bottom six in all five campaigns.

Only relegated Norwich City ‘underachieved’ more than the Seagulls last season when it came to actual goals scored versus expected goals (xG):

It’s a chronic issue and not one that Albion seem to have really addressed in the summer, with the jury still out on returning loanee Denis Undav (£5.5m) and the promising-but-raw Julio Enciso (£5.0m).

As a footnote, the underlying numbers were even better after the switch to a 3-5-2 in the run-in – despite Graham Potter’s side facing four ‘big six’ sides in that time. Albion were ranked sixth for minutes per big chance and xG in the final eight Gameweeks.

LAST SEASON: DEFENCE

TotalRank v other Premier League clubs
Goals conceded446th
Clean sheets117th=
Shots conceded4766th
Shots in the box conceded2916th
Shots on target conceded1466th
Big chances conceded587th
Expected goals conceded (xGC)50.746th

Brighton’s clean sheet count and goals conceded tally was more in keeping with the rest of their underlying defensive numbers.

Albion did ‘overachieve’ based on xGC – but then so too did 14 other clubs, in Opta’s eyes.

These strong figures you see above aren’t a fluke, either, as a Potter-led Brighton posted even better underlying numbers in 2020/21, finishing third for lowest xGC.

OPENING FIXTURES

The best budget FPL defenders for 2022/23 4

Robert Sanchez (£4.5m) kept clean sheets in nine of his 27 appearances against sides outside of the top five last season, a relevant stat as Brighton don’t meet Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs or Arsenal this side of the September international break.

Such a strong opening schedule sees the Seagulls placed second on our Season Ticker from Gameweeks 1-8, when clubs are ranked by fixture difficulty.

The two-week hiatus will be a good time to hop off any Brighton players, as all of last season’s top four follow in Gameweeks 9-14.

This is my No Salah draft- what are views? Is Bailey plus the bench just too weak?

    Ramsdale
    TAA Dias Robertson Cancelo
    Son L Díaz Martinelli Bailey
    Haaland Jesus

    Ward Andreas Neco Archer

if Diaz can replace most of Salah's points then this could be a winner - like your idea

I would strengthen mid by downgrading a def

G.Jesus selected by 65% of fpl

one or two rounds blanked and his price will drop a lot, he doesnt inspire me much confidence, but not having him may be a problem such his % in teams

I wouldn't get rid after 2 games; he's got a good run of fixtures.

My original plan was CWilson GWs 1+2 than bring Jesus. I think he will outscore Jesus in the first 2. Ive chickened out though and followed the masses.

I've toyed with that too . . . just know he'll get injured the day before the Forest game.

Literally the standout performer in preseason in the standout team who's a bargain. Week 1 is really the only concern.

Anyone fancy rating my draft? Only 2nd post all summer on this. Thanks guys.

    Ederson
    TAA Robbo Cancelo James Zinch

    Salah (c) Maddison Mahrez Rashford

No Son/Kane in GW1 could hurt... Mahrez might start on the bench...

Looks decent although inflexible: less of a worry this year with the need to wildcard early though. James to 4.5 plus 6.0 midfielder would give you a deeper bench but play your own game

no kane or haaland or son could hurt

So back heavy for me . . . no Son, Kane hurts, no Haaland KDB . . . . deffo not for me.

For a single premium team, your ok. Mahrez could be a risk, but who knows.... If you like him over Saka or Diaz, so be it. I guess the only thing is be concerned about is not having a sub if fraud gets a cold or whatever... But it could be a winner. Definitely a lot of high potential guys....

Draft #4 , slowly getting there. Not too keen on having Salah as you can see.

Currently mostly uncertain about my GK. Also think Jesus is overhyped.

    Ramsdale - Klaesson

    TAA - Robertson - Cancelo - Dalot - Neco
    KDB - Diaz - Rashford - Martinelli - Andreas
    Kane - Jesus - Plange

    Thoughts ?

Ofcourse. Can still do Kane to Haaland in GW2.

You prefer Son and Haaland over KDB and Kane?

How many 'punts' are people going with?

I have Mahrez, who should start but is a bit of a rotation risk, and Zaha, who I feel will be awesome this season.

Mahrez Bailey Martinelli for me subject to final pre-season games.

Err, that's hard to say, before the season starts :o)

Currently got Grealish, which I'll put in 'punt' category (2nd season, Sterling has left), but I've also got Sancho and Maddison as MIDs, which other people would class as punts... And Nunez... Oh, lets say 2.3 :o)

Maddi not a punt - he's nailed and since coming back from injury last year he's been prolific - that's my view anyway

I have the same punts as Croaker and may end up palying safe with Saka and Bruno G with just a punt on Bailey

I worry about Bernardo taking Mahrez minutes. All seem to have forgotten this threat.

One major punt. I mean, Robbo is only 10% owned but he's not a punt.
        It's Jesse.

Would Taveres going on loan Marseille dent the appeal of Zinc as OoP? Tierney doesn't have the best of injury records...

Are the chances of a 6-7m asset to be worth 8-9m more than a 8m asset to be worth 10m?

Hey managers! How’s this 4-4-2 for my 1st draft?
    Ramsdale
    TAA, Cancelo, Zinc,Trippier.
    Salah, Maddy, Diaz, Bailey.
    Kane, Jesus.

Personally satisfied on this team, though 0 ITB. Yeah likely will change after charity shield/gameweek1 assessments ie Kane (Haaland), Salah (Son/KdB), Lots of choice to tinker on mids: Maddy/Diaz (Kulu/Sancho/Mount/Greal).

Suggestions for best bench fodders? Currently only have 2 probables in N.Williams & Andreas. Which are the best probable starters in GK & FWD? Gazzaniga Archer
