Scout Picks

We have chosen our best Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players for Gameweek 2 ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

The final selection is partly based on the Scout Squad consensus picks but budgetary constraints and injury updates from the pre-match press conferences are all factored in, too.

We line up in a 4-4-2 formation this week and, as ever, are limited to £83.0m for our first XI.

At the same time as our Scout Picks are going live, we’ve also got a special Members-only video with Mark Sutherns and Andy North airing over on our YouTube channel.

Subscribers can view that in the embedded video below.

SCOUT PICKS CHANGES FOR 2022/23

While the maximum starting XI budget remains the same, there has been a slight change to how we nominate substitutes following our on-site poll.

FPL Gameweek 1 Scout Picks:

As a result, given that our starting XI costs £82.8m, we have £17.2m to spend on the four substitutes you see on our Scout Picks graphic.

However, in an attempt to please both crowds (the poll was extremely tight after all), we’ll be giving some slightly more expensive alternative, viable budget options below, who in most cases, carry a bit more potential in the upcoming round.

GOALKEEPER

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Double Gameweek 37 Free Hit 4

Despite underwhelming last time out, Emiliano Martinez (£5.0m) was selected by all four of our Scout Squad panel ahead of his home meeting with Everton. Aston Villa conceded two goals from set-plays at Bournemouth in Gameweek 1, but under Steven Gerrard, have largely been a decent defensive unit. Indeed, they ranked a very respectable eighth for goals conceded from his appointment onwards in 2021/22. Everton, meanwhile, were sluggish in attack against Chelsea and will once again be without the influential Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£8.0m).

I know Darwin Nunez looks really good but I think some people are presuming that salah will be happy this season to not be main man, stay wide right and just assist Nunez but I just can’t see that. He wants the ballon dor. He’s not going to be happy with 15 goals and 20 assists if Nunez gets 30 and all the glory. I still fancy salah to shine big time this season

    1. SADIO SANÉ
      • 10 Years
      3 years, 5 months ago

Salah barely looked like scoring until he did last game, can’t read much from that performance either way yet - if Nunez tries to shoot every time he gets it (vs Firmino who hardly ever does) than Salah will be affected

      1. MADCHESTER UTD
        • 10 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Yeah it’s only been one game but for me there is no way Salah will play second fiddle to Nunez. He’s been the main man for 4 seasons now, he’s not going to give that up at his peak. I know he seems a cool guy and obviously he wants to win trophies but at the same time ego is key among the worlds best. I get the debate people are having though; can the 4.0 be used elsewhere to bridge the points gap

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 10 Years

Yeah I wouldn’t have thought Nunez will score more than him or anything, not sure anyone is arguing that

    2. FOO FIGHTER

Salah does not need to play well to score points in FPL.

    3. THE SHEEP HUNTERS

Prefer Nunez and Salah than Mane and Salah.
Let's hope they get on like fluffy little bunnies and go paint balling and golfing together building up a relationship devoid of ego and shallowness.
      They will friken' smash it.!

    4. banskt
      • 12 Years

Salah was so effective in FPL because others in the team allowed Salah to score. Now, Nunez is outright selfish -- he had 8 penalty box touches and 4 shots on goal. If that keeps happening, I have no doubt that FPL points will reduce for Salah.

Having said that, Klopp probably doesn't want that and Darwin might be trained to be little less selfish.

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

Darwin is not being selfish. The box is his destiny and the players behind him will make sure he scores.

Salah will be in the action as he was vs Fulham.

I don't see how Darwin is a bad thing for Salah.

        1. banskt

I am assuming that the total number of shots on opponent goal will not change for Liverpool. There are many reasons for that assumption -- especially because it is difficult to increase the total number of attacking moves with a similar playing style.

If the above assumption is correct, then Salah will get significantly less number of shots on opponent goal when others in the team starts shooting.

I'm really debating it. Chelsea looked very poor. I think Foden is the most secure for minutes among City wingers but am worried about how wide he played against West Ham

Most players are a punt of sorts at this stage, Foden could be worthy of a City slot or he might not be - you’ve got a WC if it doesn’t work out

Evening all!! What do we think to this draft?? Pool, City and Arsenal 3 home games in next 4…..

    Sanchez
    TAA Cancelo Dias Zinchenko
    Salah Saka Martinelli Aaronson
    Haaland Darwin
    Subs- Ward Andreas Neco 4.5

Dias a place holder to get James in one move….

Another option I’m considering is Robertson, Walker and Jesus for Darwin, Dias and Zinchenko

    Thoughts welcomed!!!

It’s a tricky one mate, i Always feel safer with 3 up top, just if I go Mitrovic it just unbalances what I’m aiming for. So 4-4-2 seems better for me, but still not fully decided

Yeah that right mate!! Means losing cancelo to a 5.5/5 basically which realy makes the team unbalanced

        3. SADIO SANÉ
          • 10 Years
          3 years, 5 months ago

Both options you’ve listed are pretty good - I’m not WCing cos I have no idea what Liverpool 3 I want yet, so not sure I can help you there - plenty of defenders I’d have over Mitro at this stage but he is tempting (but so are Toney, Bamford, Wilson) - getting someone like Dias instead simplifies things a lot

          1. 1912 F.A Cup Winners
            • Fantasy Football Scout Member
            • 8 Years
            3 years, 5 months ago

I like Toney too mate, and I’m the same about which pool 3 to go for, if I start with Robertson and Jesus I can easily switch them to Darwin and Zinchenko anyway too, so that might be a more sensible option for me, but that means Dias goes down to Walker

Nothing is mad in FPL. Its a game and its your team. You should always play the player who you think will score the higher points in your squad -- price doesn't matter.

I would not bet on Manchester players at this stage. Meaning, I would play Neto. But then, I wouldn't have Rashford in my team in the first place.

But, its your team and you picked Rashford for a reason -- meaning that you trust him to return points. Do you think Manchester can score against Brighton? If yes, then I would think Rashford has a good chance of being involved. So, ignore the advice of others and play whoever you think will score higher.

Yeah, that's the conundrum. Want Son for GW3 but don't want to go into the BOU home match for City without either Haaland or KDB. Probably will get KDB.

        Thanks!

      Blame the language.

quicker damage = requires agility / lighter weapon
greater damage = requires strength / heavier weapon

      1. FOO FIGHTER
        • 6 Years
        3 years, 5 months ago

I will feck a car up quicker with a 14bl hammer than you with your 4lb.

          • 12 Years
          3 years, 5 months ago

Another quirk of the English language. Although you say "quicker" -- you are measuring the damage -- the amount of damage on the car. The "quicker" or the earliest blow will be from the lighter weapon. The "greater" or the more deeper blow will be from the heavier weapon.

              Agreed.

My swing will be quicker and will not cause not substantial damage.
Yours will be slower but will cause substantial damage.

              That's all.

This too. If the quicker/weaker blow lands correctly, then the slower/stronger blow is defeated. Happened in many wars. Still happening now in Ukraine.

yh, it's a like button. the flag is just to highlight a post to mods. either if it should be removed or if it's really good so they can make it a hot topic, which get listed on the tab on the right. The format is 20 years out of date lol but the community is good

Yeah I’m finding the site a bit hard to navigate and get used to. Does feel a bit all over the place but I can see it has useful stuff and good community if I can get my head around it. Hard to know what stats are useful and what ain’t as there are so many. Only my 2nd year playing FPL and have joined a 50 team mini league this year (for £) seeing if I can get an upper hand lol. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and help me out. Much appreciated

People who like me missed out on the Haaland price rise and had to sell Perisic to a 5m defender (in my case Walker) to fund it.

So going Salah captain over Haaland due to…
Haaland may likely to get subbed than Salah and Salah plays on Monday evening whereas Haaland plays in 35 degrees so again more likely to be subbed. Both capable of big scores but Salah gets an extra point for a goal and clean sheet. So writing this down now so when it goes tights up I can at least say I believed my own logic 🙂

Reasonable. I’m going Haaland since the fixture seems easier and the team seems to be playing for him.

Going Salah is not a crazy or unnecessary risk though.
