Researchers at The University of West London, La Trobe University and Nottingham Trent University are investigating the impact of Fantasy Football on its most passionate fans – and they want your help.

It has become a huge global game and continues to grow each year. Despite this, little is known about the positive and negative mental effects that involvement in Fantasy Football may have on individuals, with only one previous study on this topic currently published (Wilkins et al., 2021). The study you are invited to take part in focuses on this topic and aims to build on what we know so far.

You can begin the survey by clicking here

Participation involves completing a questionnaire. In addition, you will be asked five open-ended questions about your experiences of playing Fantasy Football, as well as questions about your behaviours and attitudes concerning the game.

You will also be asked about your personality and the potential effects that playing Fantasy Football has on your mental health and more general emotions. It is estimated that the study will take between 20 to 30 minutes to complete.

All data will remain confidential and anonymous. You will not be asked for your name or any other identifying features at any point. You are free to not answer any questions which you do not wish to answer. However, questions you do answer must be answered as truthfully and honestly as possible for us to obtain accurate findings.

Only the principal investigators involved can access the study data, which may also be used in future reports such as academic journals and conference presentations. However, again, no individual will be identifiable through such publication.

Participants are free to withdraw at any point, either during the data collection stage or for up to three weeks following it, by contacting the research team and providing the unique code they generated at the start of the questionnaire pack. In this eventuality, all of the withdrawing participant’s data will be destroyed immediately.

If you have any questions or thoughts about the questionnaire – or the topic in general – please feel free to contact Dr Jamie Churchyard at jamie.churchyard@uwl.ac.uk.

You can begin the survey by clicking here

They'll be fine if they just sign a striker or two, inexplicable how they have a semi decent team like Gray, Gordon, Doucoure, McNeil, and then rely on DCL to stay fit or the other option is Rondon or one of those very obviously creative players rather than goalscorers

Love the way there’s a serious story here and all people post about is RMTs.

How about, for a change, we actually debate an article?

Personally I think a good or bad week does have a relatively large impact on my happiness.

Example: I went Tripps out this week and was 50/50 on Cucu or Perisic. I went the Cucu and have been in a right strip since.

agree i think it definitely has an impact.

I like to think that the impact is relatively small but it is important to try and manage it and tell myself "it's just a game" but would be lying if I said it doesn't impact my mood a little from time to time

There was a survey about 2 years ago SuperG. Similar reception. In an age when many young people have mental health issues and don't talk about them, the reception for a mental health survey is to ignore it 🙁

Andy, you're not 20, you've years of life experience like myself. I don't really understand it myself but young people are getting anxious from time spent on social media so not a stretch to think FFS can also cause anxiety.

It’s also safe to say that depression takes a LONG TERM toll on you if untreated.
I agree with the post, anxiety and depression could start at a young age.

But they can fester under the radar as you’re still “young” and “hopeful” but then manifest during middle age when you realize what a waste of time your life was and now (middle age) you’ve ended up somewhere completely different then what you’d envisaged as a teenager.

Social media does play a role for sure.

I love FPL and although it can harm some mentally, especially when having a bad week I realise it is only a game and there are far more important things to worry about in life so don't let it affect me mentally...

I take issue with this a little but not convinced your intentionally dismissing the issue by centring on ‘young people’. As others have noted the main cause of death 35-50 in males is suicide. It’s a shocking statistic and points to how truly uncaring the world and people within it are.

Only discussing young people because a lot of posters here are young. I'm 53. Only by talking out problems is there some sort of hope of working through them. Maybe women are better at looking after their physical and mental wellbeing and talking to each other about it while male pride is still a barrier. A similar survey and study was done two years ago. Seems a waste of time and money to just identify areas that cause anxiety but not do anything to try and minimise anxiety or find ways of coping better.

Here's the abstract for you (I added the ***** to emphasise the key bit)

          "
Fantasy football (“soccer” in North America, Australasia, and certain other countries) is a rapidly growing online game with over seven million individuals playing the Official Premier League version alone. Whilst there is an abundance of anecdotal evidence associating the game with mental health concerns, to date there has been no empirical research conducted in this field. This study aimed to address this by having fantasy football players (N = 1995) complete questionnaires measuring low mood, anxiety, functional impairment, and problematic behavior in relation to playing the game.

          *****
Descriptive statistics revealed that only a minority of players experienced mental health concerns toward fantasy football; however, it was also found that individuals who engaged most in fantasy football (i.e., high time spent playing, researching, and thinking about the game) had significantly worse mental health scores toward the game than those who engaged less. Interestingly, experience in fantasy football showed the opposite effect. It may be that players of fantasy football establish coping mechanisms over time or develop an emotional numbness to the game.
          *****

Future research should explore this, as well as investigate other factors (such as in-game success, social media use, and perceived locus of control) that may impact the feelings of low mood, anxiety, functional impairment, and problematic behavior that can exist when playing fantasy football.
          "

I have no idea what 'significantly worse mental health scores toward the game' means though

I talked to Luke Wilson about it last year. I question the motives of this survey though. What's happening to work on issues found in the survey? Nice for some sites to include a mental health survey, looks great. If you could find your way through all the gambling ads that'll surely improve your mental health 🙂

I think the motives are scientific inquiry. I have no issue with that. It's just the experimental design - methods and theoretical assumptions - I have my doubts about. Recruiting heavily from FFS is part of that, but sometimes you have to balance ideals with practical considerations.

"This online approach does, though, create a further potential issue in that it may have increased the possibility of the study experiencing sampling bias, with only those FF players who regularly use Twitter or visitFantasyFootballScout.com likely to have been aware of the research"

Feeling relatively indifferent about this season so far as it’s been very unordinary languishing at 3m in rank.

I know in the past if I’m doing well and have a bad week I’ll ignore all things fantasy football until the next week. Equally, if I have a good week, I’ll be glued to all things fantasy football.

A ‘bad’ decision does definitely linger on the mind over a weekend as the games are unfolding. Definitely just need to take a step back sometimes and focus on other things

Everybody's going to have good game weeks and bad game weeks over the course of the season. Enjoy the good weeks and suck up the bad weeks. If it starts bothering me I just do something else to occupy my mind and stay positive. After all, happiness is a mood, positivity is a mindset.

Yep. I find it hard to associate mental health with a daft game you have little control over ( regardless of how many people tell you it's a skill) . If it starts ruining your enjoyment just stop. Why let it go that far. Genuinely find it hard to sympathise with people associating mental health issues with a fantasy game that is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things and make no attempt to solve the issue by simply having a break . You have to help yourselves sometimes . It's almost insulting to people who suffer from real mental health issues and I know a few.

Don't quite agree with this. I think your dismissal of the correlation between FPL and mental health only stands up on the simplest level of cause-and-effect - ie. its very unlikely that FPL is going to be the main cause of someone developing depression/anxiety. The issue is more that people who already have these tendencies can find them triggered / exacerbated by FPL, because it gives you a perfect opportunity to constantly compare yourself to others and to beat up on yourself for bad decisions.

I've been through depression & am not at all insulted by the discussion of its relationship with FPL. In fact, I'd say its the naive view that you can simply log off and forgot all your worries that is more problematic

Well if you are playing this knowing that it is going to make the tendancies worse then you have to look at your choices in life. Something has to change or you are on your road to ruin . Only you can make the choice. Like I say you have to help yourself. FPL is not that important. I've done it myself. I've quit the game when it starts to affect my enjoyment. If I can do it then so can anyone else

At least log off sites like this or Twitter that only enhances the issue. You have to do something to help yourself. Why on earth carry on playing something that is breaking you inside. It's almost self torture

Well, again its not that simple. Logging off from FPL won't solve mental health issues either. Plenty of other things can similarly exacerbate it. Plus it can bring a lot of enjoyment as well as frustration. Personally, my mental health issues predated me playing FPL, but playing fantasy IPL when I was depressed during the early stages of lockdown was actually a huge help. Gave me a new hobby to engage my mind when I didn't have much else to do & also a very beneficial social dimension to playing in a mini-league with friends

That's like saying it's insulting to associate a silly game like blackjack to mental health. I think you're coming at it from an ungenerous angle.

Besides, it's clearly explorative research, so it's not coming with assumptions like 'FFS causes mental health issues'. It's just trying to start finding out how it might fit into the mental health picture for people who play it. Like seeing the effect on your health of regular jogging, or sitting on the couch all day, or living with constant social media notifications.

Ultimately everything we experience is associated with health. Perhaps the people you know with mental health issues might be more susceptible to the negative effects of FPL, or more susceptible to getting obsessed with it? Nothing wrong with investigating questions like this imo

I think there’s a few ways to help with mental health.

          1. if you’re not a content creator (and even then, it’s a stretch) nobody cares about your rank except yourself.

One good season will be more fulfilling compared to all the other seasons that are relatively average.

          2. Make your own decisions. Therefore, all you’ve got to do is place responsibility in your hands

          3. Fill your team with as many players that will make you frustrated if they score, or you’re really really worried about doing well. Set that with ownership to help how important having a player in your team is

          3. Accept and embrace that FPL is a super difficult game, and especially with 9m+ players it is even harder. One bad decision can be BRUTAL. Anticipate this, and anticipate the fact you can make silly mistakes.

          4. Try and identify what makes you enjoy the game.

E.g., are you all about rank at any cost or do you get your highs from differential picks, including captaincy.

          5. Set targets and stop comparing yourself to others.

When u have a bad gw, just learn something, set your team and leave FPL for 4-5 days. Do not watch / listen to podcast, twitter, ffs etc.

Thats what I do a few days ago and now when recover, yeah it feels much better. Feel very happy and I keep talking about my green arrows to my wife. 🙂 Luckily, she understand and have her own team too.

I tend to play the game as an escape from real world stuff, but dont stress if my team does poorly or if i make a bad transfer.

It's a really strange way to run the forum. I'd like to see separate sections for article-specific discussion and general discussion. It's so odd that any high-effort post has to be sticked or it's completely flooded with RMTs and 3 word posts. Not that those don't have a place on the site, but they shouldn't limit actual discussion once the next page is hit.

Anyway, your point. It's varied for me over time. In general my mood isn't affected, but the seasons pre and post pandemic I definitely cared too much and it stressed me out. The seasons outside of those, it's fairly mellow. I've never liked to follow the crowd and love to make decisions without thinking, so I kind of accept my rank has a built-in penalty.

Occasionally there'll be an isolated incident that'll bother me. Funnily enough I don't mind bench points at all, or players that I nearly bought but didn't scoring well. I see those as good thinking by me, but just not quite lined up. A red card or missed penalty is most likely to make me wring my hands.

Digne scoring an OG late into the game when I also had both him and Cash on for 2bps, when my entire pre-season plan was to go heavy on Villa and WC GW4? That thoroughly annoyed me. Probably the most pissed off I've been at FPL in a long time, since it wasn't really a bad decision by me (like never buying Son or Bowen last season). Was just unfortunate. Makes you feel powerless. Going Mitrovic instead of Jesus GW2 and him ending with a minus score compared to 19 points made it a legendarily frustrating GW.

This is way over simplistic and just uses a phrase used to distribute better awareness on the problems of gambling in such a way to belittle the genuine mental health of people who enjoy playing this amazing game but also have very real mental health problems.

Ok on a very basic level I have learned that, money leagues and mini leagues in general with friends and colleagues can and do have a massive effect on my mental health. So much so in fact that I now just don’t participate in any of them. I instead play purely for O/R and have found that works much much better for me. On coping with horrendous gw scores and the outrageous slings and arrows of red cards (yes I had Darwin) and captain fails I have learned to delete tabs, close down research done and simply walk away for as long as I can before I get back on it. I have deleted my team and made 15 transfers to demolish my team in previous years (Gerrard missed pen and blank in a dgw) springs to mind from previous years. It can be tough and not at all as easy as the coping strategies I’ve listed. I guess learning the triggers and spotting them is always a preferred option but again, just last week with my mental health failing miserably I found myself in a wildcard that inevitably found me struggling massively with ‘the best option’. I have posted on these boards in recent weeks about my mental health and have had very few responses to them…..although (and very grateful indeed) have had responses that recognise my outpourings as genuine and heartfelt.

On a Macro level ie on mental health in general and not concerning fantasy footy I will say this. All to often people just ignore the signs, people conveniently pass on simply doing the right things and then trot out the easily repeated ‘if only he/she had asked’ or ‘what a selfish thing to do’ or even worse ‘it’s a cowards way out’. It is NEVER that simple and in my opinion has it’s origins made in the cruel and unforgiving way the vast majority of people live their lives. The I’m alright attitude of deal with your own lot in life and ignore those in society who struggle through no fault of their own. If only one person reads this and does the right thing then my musings will of done some good. IF YOU KNOW OF SOMEONE WHO IS STRUGGLING OR IS HAVING A HARD TIME……make that call or spend 5 seconds of your day sending a message to ask how they are. It really is very very simple.
Peace and respect to you all 🙂

If you feel that a free online game is affecting your mental health negatively you need to take a step back or consider quitting in conjunction with looking at underlying causes/other issues, mental health is serious.

This is a free online game related to a sport most people love but there are people dying from wars/diseases or living in abject poverty unable to feed their families out there. Some perspective is needed from when you have a captaincy fail or a blank.

Unfortunately there is a creeping desire by virtue-signallers to crowbar natural healthy reactions into mental health issues or rather, mental disorders. It maybe trendy but it is wrong. It's a conflation and should be challenged by people who know what they're talking about.

Trossard an option? Thinking about a punt until the wild card.

          I'd still pick Martinelli.

        Which player needs to go?

        Ward (Iverson)
TAA Cancelo James (N Williams, Patterson)
        Salah Diaz Martinelli Kulu (Andreas)
        Jesus Haaland (Archer)

        1 FT
        0 on the bank

What to do with Saka (have also Jesus and Martinelli)?

        A) Ditch for Rodrigo now.
        B) Last chance vs. Fulham, as Rodrigo is playing the tough Brighton defence now.

        Thank you.

Let's give Saka Fulham game. If he blanks, I'm moving on as well.

Looks ok for now but you likely will want better players in midfield soon other than Salad and Marti.

I would not sell Robbo either right now. But from GW4 thing will be one step closer to becoming clearer.

This team is pre - Wildcard so Robbo will definitely be going for Perisic and a few other changes prob more spurs.

Bit stuck on what to do here… 1FT & 1.3ITB.

Any suggestions? Keepers and Mount the big issues. Che def also looks poor atm and Gross over Rodrigo hurts a bit.

        Ward

        TAA Cancelo James Cucurella

        Salah Mount Martinelli Gross

Haaland Jesus
        (Iversen, Andreas, Neco, Archer)

Do we really think Liverpool will perform against Bournemouth, what's going to change?

Do you think Perisic outscores Robbo in next 5?

What's the chances of Robbo getting a rest in the congestion of the next few weeks with Tsimikas on the bench?

I think Liverpool will beat Bournmouth, and possibly keep a clean sheet. I think both Robbo and Perisic will be frustrating to own once the CL starts so i am looking at bringing in players from teams outside of the CL such as Trippier, Maddison, Toney etc who should hopefully get more guaranteed minutes
