Michael Laudrup’s third foray into the summer transfer market since becoming manager of Swansea has seen the Spanish attacking midfielder Michu arrive for a deal in the region of £2m. The 26-year-old – whose full name is Miguel Perez Cuesta – joins up at the Liberty Stadium on a three-year contract from La Liga side Rayo Vallecano, after his goalscoring exploits helped the Spanish side narrowly avoid relegation by a mere two points last season:

The move for Michu continues Laudrup’s policy of plundering talents that have previously caught his eye in Spain’s top-flight, with fellow new boys Jonathan De Guzman and Chico both having featured under the Dane in La Liga. Similar to De Guzman and Chico, Michu admits the allure of playing for Laudrup was simply too good an opportunity to miss:

I’m very happy. I had other offers, but I really wanted to come to Swansea because of the coach, the style of play and the Premier League. I’ve always followed the Premier League from Spain and I watched a lot of Swansea games last season. They played good football and I liked their style. I also know how Michael Laudrup’s teams play, so I’m looking forward to being part of that.

The Statistics

Michu began his career in the lower leagues in Spain where, as a 16-year-old, he debuted for Real Oviedo. Over the course of four campaigns, he notched 13 times in 100 appearances before being snapped up by Celta Vigo in 2007-08. Initially, he featured in the club’s “B” team but a tally of 10 goals from 28 games saw him end the campaign in the first-team at the second division side.

A modest 15 goals in 103 appearances over the next three seasons were unable to help his side win promotion to La Liga – a missed spot-kick in the 2010/11 promotion play-off against Granada proved costly as his side slipped to defeat 5-4 on penalties. Michu’s chance of playing in the Spanish top-flight was not to be denied, though; Rayo Vallecano came calling last summer after his contract with Celta expired and snapped him up on a Bosman.

Handed a role in “the hole” in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Michu was a sensation in his one and only season in La Liga. Despite their lowly league position, Vallecano racked up 53 goals – only six less than third placed Valencia – and their attacking approach helped Michu return 15 goals and three assists, making him the top scoring midfielder in Spain’s top division last time round.

The Prospects

Initially, many had expected De Guzman to slot into the attacking midfield position vacated by Gylfi Sigurdsson but Laudrup perhaps hinted at an alternative slot upon the player’s arrival when he stated the Dutch international could play in “anywhere in midfield”.

Michu, on the other hand, is a far more direct type of player and seems to be in the driving seat for the central role behind a lone striker as Laudrup goes about rebuilding his squad in light of Brendan Rodgers’ departure. Although his ability to create opportunities for others isn’t quite up to Sigurdsson’s level, Michu is likely to offer a substantial goal threat for the Swans; standing 6 foot 1, he’s good in the air as well as on the ground and his strong work-ethic should also stand the Spaniard in good stead as he adjusts to the rigours of the Premier League.

With both player and manager experiencing the English top-flight for the first time, there’s some trepidation as to how quickly the Welsh club will settle under Laudrup but the Dane has already spelled out his intention to maintain the same shape and style of play from last term, suggesting the transition could well be seamless. Already, Michu is garnering plenty of attention, despite the fact he has yet to be added to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game; bearing in mind that De Guzman came in at 6.0, a similar cost looks on the cards, though. The Spaniard has been handed a 5.5 valuation in the Sky Sports game, offering us a viable mid-price Fantasy contender for the season ahead.

Casting an eye over the fixture list, Swansea have been afforded one of the kindest opening schedules of any side. Over the first eight Gameweeks, they play at home five times – with (WHM, SUN, EVE, RDG, WIG) all visiting the Liberty Stadium, in addition to trips to QPR, Villa and Stoke, some level of investment in Laudrup’s troops seems a sensible tactic. If Michu can settle quickly and replicate his Vallecano form, Swansea – and Fantasy managers – may well have found their Sigurdsson replacement for the season ahead.

If you think of a 4-2-3-1 the possibilities for each position are:

      1: Rooney/Hernandez/Welbeck
Left of the 3: Nani/Kagawa/Young/Lucas Moura
Middle of the 3 (or in the hole): Rooney/Kagawa/Young/Moura/Welbeck (if Hernandez up front)
      Right of the 3: Valencia/Nani/Moura

And that's before you consider how to put RVP in there.

If he does come, expect limited minutes/appearances for the first season.

      United's formation will be:

      4-2-3-1 (Rooney being the 1)

All three of the attacking midfield positions can be filled by the following players:

Kagawa. Giggs, Young, Nani, Valencia, Welbeck, and Powell

Not the player we need, unless Nani has made it clear he wants to move on.

As a United fan I can totally understand why you and many others would think that.

Nani, on his day is unplayable in fact world class, but those days are not common enough for a player playing for one of the biggest clubs in Europe.

I haven't always been is greatest fan and would give the chap one more season, over a £26m+ unproven 19 year old winger. The reason for this, we critically need a central midfielder.... Which has been shown over the past few seasons

I'm with you. We can do without another RVP, Baines, Moura and the other names we've been linked with. I'd be happy with a proven defensive midfielder with some flair and creativity. Tiote would be absolutely perfect in my opinion but it looks like Fergie has his own ideas... IFWT I suppose!

Posted this a couple of weeks ago after the Euros, when it was very quiet around here. Here it is again for those who might have missed it but find it useful...

Right guys, a bit of defensive stats for ye.

I have looked at each team’s average goals scored at home and away, and goals scored home and away for each team over the last season. For the promoted teams, I used the average of all 3 promoted teams each season, over the past 3 seasons.

I’ll use Arsenal to explain myself. At home, they conceded on average 0.895 goals per game. Their gw1 opponents, Sunderland, scored an average of 1 goal away from home. So, what I have done is multiplied these figures together, and also assed them together and divided by 2. I then added the two final figures, to come up with a total figure. I did this for each for the first 6 gameweeks, and also for all 20 teams. Remember that these are based on last seasons stats, we all know things could be a lot different this season.

The following is a list of all teams, with the best ranked team the one I see who will concede the fewest goals over the first 6 weeks (not who will keep the most clean sheets).

    1 Man United
    2 Man City
    3 Chelsea
    - Everton
    5 Swansea
    6 Sunderland
    7 Liverpool
    - Spurs
    9 Aston Villa
    10 Newcastle
    11 West Ham
    – Arsenal
    13 Wigan
    14 West Brom
    15 Fulham
    16 Stoke
    17 Reading
    18 Norwich
    19 QPR
    20 Southampton

If ye find this useful, I’ll post up the attacking stats later on.

I used the exact same method to assess clean sheet likelihood and assess 5 team rotation.

Spreadsheet here shows the clean sheet scores for the best 3 fixtures of each gameweek for every possible combination of 5 teams. Big spreadsheet but you might find it useful.

So can players prices change from GW1 to GW2?

For example if say 33% have DDG, Cole, Hazard and Aguero, are their prices likely to rise within the week?

If so, a few high ownerships with good GW1 scores will become difficult to get if 100m spent?

I think last season it was every 30,000 transfers in or so resulted in a 0.1 price rise.

10% decrease was needed for a 0.1 price fall.

Count, I'm not convinced by many £6m mids, but Gutierrez perhaps worth a gamble. For me, better to find £0.5m and go for Fellinai/Pienaar (if EVE) or down grade, Dyer, Allen, McCarthy even SWP (gamble alert) worth looking at.

      Right....

Frontline fine, midfield decent, defence slightly scary, goalkeepers decent.

Are you playing a 3-way defence rotation with 2 heavy hitters? Because while Cole will play every week, I think Clichy will be benched enough to cause you problems. I'd be amazed if you got CS out of Gunter/Tierney/Demel.

Sadly, you can't. The spreadsheet is just a data dump of the output of a program I wrote to analyse all possible rotation combinations. I am sorry it's not particularly usable. I'm definitely in the market for suggestions on how to take the analysis further and produce something a bit more useful.

I just realised you could do it if you're comfortable with Excel formulae. You could create a new column to concatenate the five team names into a single line of text (formula: =B2 & C2 & D2 & E2 & F2) and then do a plain search for the one you want. But that isn't "EASILY"

4 goals and 8 assists isn't too bad for 7.0M and the encouraging thing for me is that he crept forward and became more productive as the season wore on. He's further forward in a 4-3-3. I guess I'll have to watch Toon's preseason but he's pencilled in for me. I guess I just like the guy...

    Too much Michu for me?

Though he has some good stats going for him from previous season, there really isn't any guarantee that Michu will perform anywhere near what he did at RV. This is sounding more and more like Moses pre-season bandwagon from last year. And we all know that he didn't exactly part the sea first half of the season. However Moses did have the skill, does Michu?

I've watched some of his play summarized from last year and have a few comments to make:

    - Okay, so he is tall. However, he doesn't' seem particular strong physically (okay he had one goal showing great balance when tackled). PL is much more physical than LL, with okay(but not blistering) pace he looks easy enough to get off balance.

    - Many goals and attacks on the fast break, will Swansea play direct enough for him to continue to score the same easy run-in-goals? Will Swansea play more possession-oriented under Laudrup?

+ I like his finishing, generally no-nonsense and clinical.

+ He is very direct towards goal, yes not great for assists but better for goals.

My advice, hold off until you see a couple of games to see how well he adapts or at least don't have him, and four other untried PL new boys inn (Hazard, Marin, kagawa, de guzman etc).

A big part of Swansea under Rodgers was quick transitions. They broke very directly. I remember a good few goals (not least for Siggy) coming like that. If that's the sort of player Michu is then he seems a tailor made 'Siggy replacement'...

Just something i came across on Sky in relation to the promoted sides , you may or may not find it interesting :

    Southampton

    Top pick: Rickie Lambert

    Set-piece taker: Rickie Lambert

Goals conceded last season: 46 (18 clean sheets)

Rickie Lambert (£6.8m) is the obvious pick for Fantasy bosses desperate to discover the new Grant Holt after topping the Championship scoring charts last season.

The 30-year-old not only netted 27 times last time but was also responsible for 13 assists, just one less than the league's highest contributor.

With Lambert netting nine times from the spot, his strike partner Billy Sharpe (£5.8m) was just as prolific from open play, scoring 19 times including one penalty.

Sharpe may struggle to retain his starting berth however, with fellow frontman Jay Rodriguez (£5.5m), who netted 15 times for Burnley last season, added to the ranks.

Adam Lallana (£4.9m) starred for the Saints in the middle of the park last season, scoring 11 times during the campaign, while Guly Do Prado (£4.7m) found the net 10 times.

At the back, Danny Fox (£3.7m) looks a shrewd pick having contributed 10 assists from left-back in a defence which kept an impressive 18 clean sheets.

    Reading

    Top pick: Alex Pearce

    Set-piece taker: Ian Harte

Goals conceded last season: 41 (20 clean sheets)

While the collective effort from Reading's all-contributing squad was impressive last season, it also makes it difficult to pick out key players.

Adam Le Fondre (£6.5m) was their top scorer with just 12 goals, hardly the sort of tally likely to tempt Fantasy bosses scrambling for his services, while midfielder Jimmy Kebe (£4.6m) contributed the most assists with 10 but netted just three times.

Pavel Pogrebnyak (£7.2m) has joined the ranks over the summer after impressing during his loan spell at Fulham, scoring six times in his 12 appearances, although form teetered off towards the end of the season.

However, the Royals backline is definitely worth a look at after keeping a league-high 20 clean sheets en route to their title triumph.

Australia goalkeeper Adam Federici (£4m) is one of the cheapest in the game and even has a goal in him, having netted against Cardiff in 2009, while centre-back Alex Pearce (£4.2m) netted five times last term and Ian Harte bagged four.

    West Ham

    Top pick: Kevin Nolan

    Set-piece taker: Mark Noble

Goals conceded last season: 48 (17 clean sheets)

The Hammers' return to the top flight reunites Fantasy bosses with a perennial favourite Kevin Nolan (£4.9m).

The attacking midfielder hit double figures for a third successive season last term with 13 goals.

Mark Noble (£4.7m) was also pretty prolific from the middle of that park last season with eight goals to his name, although all but one were from the spot.

While Carlon Cole (£6.7m) was West Ham's top scorer with 14 goals last season, Ricardo Vaz Te (£6.2m) was the league's second highest with his contributions for Barnsley and then the Hammers seeing him rack up 20 in total.

At the other end of the pitch, Sam Allardyce's men were the least stringent of those to get promoted, conceding over a goal a game.

The Hammers boss has added veteran stopper Jussi Jaaskelainen (£3.8m) to his ranks after releasing Robert Green, while James Tomkins (£4.1m) is their highest valued defender having scored four times last term.

they only have 1 nice fixture in teh first 3 and then sagna is likely to be returning (i think). if chelsea didnt have the double id consider it but all gwk 2 transfers are likely to be to shift a chelsea player
