Having already brought you the statistical summary of Tuesday’s Gameweek 5 action, we now turn our attention to the wider Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from the fixtures.

The numbers and graphics you see in this article are from our Premium Members area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

LEEDS UNITED 1-1 EVERTON

Gameweek 5’s most transferred in player, Rodrigo Moreno (£6.5m), went off injured inside the first-half at Elland Road with a dislocated shoulder.

He dislocated his shoulder so the question is how much damage was done in that action. Sometimes it can be a week, sometimes it can be two months depending on the damage. He feels better, which is a good sign but we need a scan. I thought Patrick Bamford did well and held up some balls and combined. I also think Joffy (Gelhardt) played well. It is not always easy to take a player in and then out. We like those guys and have quality up front. We will find ways to be more dangerous.” – Jesse Marsch on Rodrigo and his other forward options

“They popped it back in and seems to be ok. He will have a scan.” – Jesse Marsch on Rodrigo

In terms of the match itself, Luis Sinisterra (£6.5m) scored his first Premier League goal for Leeds United, while Anthony Gordon (£5.5m) netted for a second successive game.

The Everton wingers underlying statistics are worth noting, given that he ranks second among all midfielders for goal attempts (16) and shots in the box (12) this season. If a move to Chelsea doesn’t materialise before the transfer window slams shuts, he should offer value given his budget price tag.

Above: Anthony Gordon’s 2022/23 shot map, with his efforts on target in green

“I talked to Anthony (Gordon) a lot about getting in goal scoring positions and scoring. It is the difference between a good and great winger. He has every potential to be a great winger and that means double figures every season. You have to put pressure on yourself, get in those positions, practice them, train them and be calm when you get there. It is a big step forward for him to score two in two. He can take that forward. We are playing games at the minute without an out-and-out striker. We need that output from our wingers. Now we have a striker for the next game and we get stronger.” – Frank Lampard on Anthony Gordon

That striker is, of course, Neal Maupay (£6.2m), who missed out in Gameweek 5.

“We have had Neal (Maupay) for four days. He should be able to play the game as far as I am concerned. We registered him on Friday but it wasn’t registered because it is a bank holiday weekend. There is nothing we can do about it. It’s disappointing. If the matchday is tomorrow he plays but because of TV, they tell us what days to play. We need him. The striker option and different type of player to offer something different.” – Frank Lampard on Neal Maupay’s absence

Leeds United XI: Meslier, Kristensen, Koch, Llorente, Struijk, Adams, Roca, Sinisterra (Klich 64), Aaronson (James 76), Harrison, Rodrigo (Gelhardt 32)

Everton XI: Pickford, Patterson, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko, Onana, Davies, Iwobi, McNeil, Gordon, Gray

FULHAM 2-1 BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION

Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.7m) netted his fifth goal of the season as Fulham brought Brighton and Hove Albion’s unbeaten start to an end with a 2-1 win at Craven Cottage.

The 27-year-old opened the scoring on 48 minutes, before a second for Fulham followed shortly after when Lewis Dunk (£4.6m) put the ball through his own net from an Andreas Pereira (£4.5m) cross, a timely assist given that many managers had turned to the playmaker in the absence of Reece James (£6.1m).

As for Mitrovic, he is now up to second in the forward standings, having blanked in just one of his five appearances. It’s also worth noting that he has had more goal attempts (22), shots in the box (19) and efforts on target (12) than any other player so far.

“He was unbelievable. Not just because he scored. All strikers need goals and you could see after he scored it was a boost for him and he was everywhere. He was good on the ball but off the ball he was unbelievable. He is not just a goalscorer for us, he is much more than that.” – Marco Silva on Aleksandar Mitrovic

Fulham have now picked up seven points in their first three games at Craven Cottage, a very respectable start for a newly-promoted team. The immediate fixtures admittedly aren’t great, with Tottenham Hotspur (a) and Chelsea (h) up next, but things improve drastically in Gameweek 8, when they jump to the top of our Season Ticker right up until Gameweek 14.

As for Brighton, they lined up without a number nine, and instead turned to Leandro Trossard (£6.5m) up top, which didn’t really work. Their goal, meanwhile, arrived from an Alexis Mac Allister (£5.5m) penalty after Pervis Estupinan (£4.5m) was fouled.

“We missed Danny Welbeck a bit up front but that’s life. He took a couple of heavy knocks against Leeds and I don’t regret the decision not to start him.” – Graham Potter

Fulham XI: Leno, Tete, Adarabioyo, Ream, Robinson, Reed (Chalobah 90+2), Palhinha, Reid, Pereira (Cairney 78), Kebano, Mitrovic

Brighton and Hove Albion XI: Sanchez, Veltman (Lamptey 64), Dunk, Webster, March, Caicedo (Undav 79), Mwepu (Welbeck 63), Mac Allister, Estupinan (Mitoma 63), Gross, Trossard

SOUTHAMPTON 2-1 CHELSEA

With Reece James absent through illness, Chelsea slumped to a woeful 2-1 defeat at Southampton in Gameweek 5. The Blues were carved open a number of times and have now conceded eight goals in their last four Premier League matches.

However, their evening started perfectly when Raheem Sterling (£9.9m) continued his run of goalscoring form, netting his team’s opener. As a result, he has now scored three goals in his last two starts and feels like a decent differential given that his ownership sits at just 7.1 per cent.

Elsewhere, Marc Cucurella’s (£5.1m) offensive contributions underwhelmed, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.0m) went off with a hamstring injury, increasing Thomas Tuchel’s problems in central midfield.

“It is too easy to put us off balance, to beat us, to confuse us. It is too easy. It happened against Leeds. We need to understand why and find solutions. We lose concentration, we lose our plan and lose consistency, it is too easy to beat us. A lot of key players are injured, it is something I don’t really understand. You can always lose football matches and I am humble enough to admit this but, in a match where you are in the lead there is no need to give away half chances. To have no answers in the second half was disappointing. We need to have answers, we need to step up and play a level higher if needed. We struggled to do this.” – Thomas Tuchel

As for Southampton, they deserve a lot of credit for their win, with budget midfielder Romeo Lavia (£4.5m) scoring his first goal for the club and impressing in the engine room. However, it looks like the youngster is set for a spell on the sidelines, having been taken off injured after the break.

“The negative thing is he is maybe injured now for a few weeks, so not perfect.” – Ralph Hasenhuttl on Romeo Lavia

Southampton XI: Bazunu, Walker-Peters, Bella-Kotchap, Salisu, Perraud (Djenepo 73), Diallo, Lavia (Aribo 60), Ward-Prowse, Elyounoussi, A Armstrong (Lyanco 86), Adams

Chelsea XI: Mendy, Azpilicueta (Broja 66), Thiago Silva, Koulibaly, Cucurella, Jorginho (Chilwell 67), Loftus-Cheek (Kovacic 45), Mount, Ziyech, Havertz (Pulisic 66), Sterling

CRYSTAL PALACE 1-1 BRENTFORD

Wilfried Zaha (£7.1m) returned to the starting XI after missing Gameweek 4 and produced a moment of magic to break the deadlock.

The Ivory Coast international racked up match-leading totals for shots in the box (four) and penalty box touches (10), and is now up to four goals for the season.

Brentford, meanwhile, switched from a 4-3-3 formation to a 3-5-2 in the second-half in an attempt to score. That coincided with Josh Dasilva (£4.6m) being introduced from the bench after 68 minutes. However, it was another substitute, Yoane Wissa (£5.4m), who’s late header rescued a draw, while Bryan Mbeumo (£6.0m) and Ben Mee (£4.6m) both came close to scoring in stoppage time.

Notably, the Bees have now conceded in each of their last 19 Premier League away fixtures.

Crystal Palace XI: Guaita, Clyne, Andersen, Guehi, Ward, Doucoure, Schlupp (Milivojevic 76), Eze (Ayew 76), Olise (Mitchell 80), Zaha, Mateta (Edouard 54)

Brentford XI: Raya, Hickey (Ghoddos 79), Zanka, Mee, Henry, Janelt, Baptiste (Damsgaard 68), Jensen (Wissa 79), Mbeumo (Onyeka 68), Lewis-Potter (Dasilva 68), Toney

It's a real shame Rodrigo got injured as Leeds do have a nice run of fixtures. I'd wait until there's news of his scan and how long he's likely to be out for before making any moves.

If Rodrigo is likely to miss just the one game then Neco against Bournemouth at home isn't a bad bench option to come on. If it looks like he's out longer then sell him either this week or next week as part of 2FT

Say Haaland starts tonight (which I think he will after seeing Pep's embargoed comments from yesterday), are people actually putting him on their bench for GW6? Feels a bit odd looking at it but is it the right call? Chances are he won't come on as Pep will want a full break for him, but if they're struggling he likely will end up coming on for 20-30 mins I'd assume. So should we leave him in despite Pep effectively directly saying that he'll start on the bench in this situation?

I'd rather 20 minutes of Haaland than 90 minutes of Neco, DaSilva and Andreas.

Andrea's has had a 6 and 8 point score in the last 3 GWs, while Neco is playing one of the worst sides in the division at home. On paper I agree but I think this week there could be a case for taking the risk

Don't have a definitive plan for these situations yet, but I think this weekend I'll start him. Hopefully doesn't come on for a useless cameo if City are cruising. But if he's needed for a match-winning 30mins then I don't want that sitting on my bench, even if I do end up with the occasional 1pt-er instead

He just won't be a captaincy option some weeks. I feel he's like Jota in previous seasons - probably capable of returning if he plays 20 -30 minutes.

If he is in your team, you dont bench him.

Bigger question would be should you captain him instead of KDB, Salah, Jesus etc. At the moment i am with KDB(c) and of course, its a risk...

Guardiola wasn't giving anything away on that on Tuesday, but he made it quite clear he wouldn't be explaining his selection decisions to Haaland - or anyone else for that matter.

"No, I’m not going to explain," he said.

"I don’t explain the reasons for my decisions because I will not convince them. Some players understand and some will never understand me.

"I don’t care. I do my best for the team, to win games and for many reasons. That’s all. I’m the manager and I decide. I am being paid for that, and they have to accept my decisions."

    Oh no.

    1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      3 years, 3 months ago

He's right though. I doubt many managers ever felt they had to pull a player aside and tell them why they benched them 15+ years ago, the manager is paid to make these decisions and they shouldn't be questioned. This was put to Haaland's team too when City were trying to get him to join, that if he went to Madrid, for example, there would be far too much uproar if he was benched for a game, while Pep doesn't care what anyone thinks and will do his own thing which will help get Haaland away from having to play basically every minute of every game like at Dortmund so he can be managed.

I'll say one thing, as a City fan I'd watched a lot of Alvarez when we signed him and sent him back on loan to River Plate - he looks the real deal and in strictly football terms, I have no issue him starting over Haaland to ensure we have the best team for the toughest games.

I'd like to see them starting together though also.

I've read that when first signed City were a little unsure of how he'll adapt as there's a huge gap between Argentinian league and PL but that behind the scenes they've all been extremely impressed, I'd be curious to see them in a front two together too, Alvarez seems quite flexible so I could see it working well

Obviously, FPL is about consistency and patience but it’s also about forward thinking and jumping on players right before they score nicely.

I Wildcarded for Chelsea assets. So far, Sterling has been the surprise. I thought he’d score ok, not 3 goals in 2.

Having said that, who do we think could be the next few players who will start becoming strong contenders in our thinking?

    Gundogan? Foden? Darwin? Saka?

If Haaland starts tonight, I am tempted to go Haaland for Kane as I can't see him starting Villa.

Kane has Fulham and Leicester at home in the next 3. And the City game you'd probably fancy him to score as much as you would Haaland (and you'd captain neither). With so few fires to put out in general, it feels like a way to break away from the crowd?

    1. House Frey Wedding Planner
      • 7 Years

That could work going from Haaland to Kane and getting Kane as captain for 2 of the next 3 may reap big rewards.

The issue I have though is I'd have to pay a lot more to get Haaland back later down the line and will probably be sooner than you'd think.

My way around it would be to most likely WC in gw8, captain Salah in gw6 then take him out of the team for Kane and move forward with both Kane and Haaland up top

His stats show Cancelo is far from what he was last season and it would be miracle if he provides that type of points with these new stats. That being said, I won't ship him anytime soon as I have other plans, but understand if it makes sense to some.

I don't think benching headaches are a big issue right now looking at how this week is going so far for a few. Zaha will probably be fine, he's scored in tougher games and Palace look decent, I just find it hard to back him, feel like every season he does this when the window is open then drops off (realistically of course he may just simply tend to start well and regresses a bit). I'm looking at Sterling too, need to dig a bit deeper but he has 3 goals in his last 2, someone said he could have had another last night, and he was very close to scoring against Leeds and Spurs. Chelsea's form is a bit worrying but he's still getting points, and they'll likely have Fofana, James and possibly Kovacic available at the weekend so I think it's worth going for. Hard for some to get to him without dropping a premium too so can be a bit of a differential

His head doesn't look right to me, starts bright and then slows down. And he seems to have lost pace in the dribble. Any player seems to be able to catch him up for a tackle

I avoided for those reasons + Chelsea haven't looked great but you can't argue with the goals

Utd away now isn't as easy as it was a couple of weeks ago. Plus Arsenal have a tough gw8-12 schedule so it's only really the gw7 Everton game where there's real hope of returns.

I think we're close to the stage of jumping away from Arsenal defensive assets so I'd probably get rid while you might still make a profit on him. Better defensive options are presenting itself.

What's everyone currently thinking the best GW to use Wildcard1 is?

I'm looking at GWs 8/9 and seeing some swing like Ars, Ful etc which could be a reasonable time to use it.

    Anyone got any other ideas?

Depends on your team. I was looking at 9, given the state of my current side I think holding out til then would be counterproductive now.

GW8 is the best time to catch the fixture swings and move away from the 5-6 Liverpool and Arsenal players most of us have.

Would have been really nice if that fell on an international break though

          I disagree.

It's probably their toughest CL fixture from the group. I'm sure they would want to get qualification sorted early so they can be afforded some dead rubber games towards the end. They'll put strong teams out in the early CL fixtures to avoid a bad start

What I mean is I really doubt that Pep is thinking in terms of Villa being a tough fixture, requiring Haaland to break them down, compared to Forest. I'm sure he is lumping them together as theoretically fairly comfortable wins regardless of who he puts out.

I don't know, when I thought about it last night my plan before was to keep Jesus the whole season because of his ownership which might not colapse due to him being so cheap.

Once the Arsenal game has finished, the plan I had of keeping Jesus may change. That and the City result.

Is anyone considering Haaland to Kane for the next 3?

Kane has Fulham, City, Leicester. I think he is the best captain for 2 of those.

Haaland has Villa, Spurs, Wolves. With rotation risk, I don't think he is captainable in any barring maybe Wolves.

most of us have wildcards so it feels fairly low risk?

interesting. Captaincy is a big factor though.

Salah has look really out of nick. Goal v Fulham was a shambles, similarly versus united. Missed two sitters v bournemouth (guess the fact he was in the position to miss is a plus).

Nah, Haaland can haul in any fixture. I know Kane scored twice but Forest are so open defensively, leave themselves prone to counter attacks from the numbers they press forward and suits Spurs perfectly. Spurs haven't impressed me, looked a bit lethargic, slow in build-up and they're still dependent on Kane creating from central positions against better defences. I'd feel sure he'll play against Spurs given City's trouble against them in recent years and as they'll want to try to break into that top 2

I've been considering this and if Haaland plays tonight then I like the look of doing it. Especially with 2FTs and nothing major to do to my team.

Could backfire but also could easily see Haaland being benched vs villa and wolves if he starts tonight. Hard to second guess Pep

yeah it's a gamble, but prepared to do it for games where Haaland is unlikely to be captained by many (if Kane is a better captaincy choice on paper).

Forest at home is a much easier game to rest Haaland and give Alvarez his debut. But then again, Villa is too close to the CL game, so a rest, even if ab away game, is quite possible. It's really a tricky one, this. Hence I went with Salah C. Hope I ain't burned on this one.

Good morning all!! Is it feasible to
Go without and City defence??!! … Do we think Cancelo isn’t worth his price tag?!.. Walker will only
Get a maximum of 6 points generally, so there leaves Dias and if your spending 6.0 on a defender you obviously go for James or Perisic at 5.6
Reason I’m asking is I’m thinking of doing Rodrigo and Cancelo to Kulu and Saliba this week(only
Have a max of 5.4 to spend on a defender) which leaves me with 0.7 to do Walker to Perisic the week after but that would leave me
With no City defenders, my defenders would be TAA, James, Perisic, Saliba and Neco…

Wondering what other peoples thoughts about this are???!

    Cheers everyone!!!

I have none currently (Haaland, KDB & Gundogan my City trio). Might just be short-term with their injuries & errors, but it also feels like the attacking upside to their defenders isn't really comparable with other teams at the moment

I do not think City defence is essential, especially not Cancelo.

GW1 I was saying that there is no way I would get rid of him but clearly, based on the data at this very moment his price is not worth it at all. Things may change but I am happy to go without for now.

I think I'm moving Cancelo out this week, I still think he's capable of a haul and he's still excellent for bps, but it does seem the attacking onus from midfield is from others. City are conceding too often and have a few tricky games coming up, even on occasions where they've avoided conceding they've given away decent chances so I expect it may continue, was always a bit of a risk when changing to playing with a forward again that they'd lose some control in midfield and defence. I think it's OK for a few weeks, I'll be WCing around GW9 and will decide then whether to get him back or not
