International breaks are always popular times for Wildcards in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Indeed, just under 50% of site readers say they will activate the chip ahead of Gameweek 9, according to our home page sidebar vote.

With this in mind, we’ll be taking a position-by-position look at the best and most discussed options in each category.

You can read our view on the pick of the goalkeepers here.

The numbers and visuals you see in this piece are from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

We’ll also reveal what our Rate My Team (RMT) tool thinks in terms of points projections for Gameweeks 9-16 at the bottom of this piece.

Joao Cancelo

Let’s start with the inevitable Joao Cancelo (£7.2m), currently on 51% ownership. The full-back has returned in four of his seven matches, and Saturday’s win at Wolverhampton Wanderers brought him three bonus points despite the fact that he was not involved in any of the goals.

He has already matched the one goal of last season but it’s assists where the Portuguese international truly excelled in 2021/22. With 18 penalty area touches being the most of all defenders, he continues to contribute high up the pitch.

He’s curiously only 24th among FPL defenders for expected goal involvement (xGI, 0.71) this season but we’re still in the embryonic stage of the season and even just one big chance created, which we know he is capable of, will catapult him up the standings in this tightly packed together field.

As for clean sheet potential, Manchester City not only have more of those already than any other team but have allowed fewer shots (40), shots on target (12) and expected goals conceded (xGC, 3.96) than anyone else.

They do, however, have a Blank Gameweek 12, following last week’s announcement that the match with Arsenal has to make way for the Gunners’ Europa League clash against PSV Eindhoven.

With plenty of time for FPL managers to plan ahead, this shouldn’t deter non-owners from bringing Cancelo in.

Reece James

There is ongoing nagging uncertainty over the role of Reece James (£6.0m), who has sporadically been used as a centre-half instead of showcasing his devastating wing-back strengths.

James did reassuringly start at right wing-back during Graham Potter’s first game in charge of the Blues and posed plenty of attacking threat, only moving to centre-half for the final 10 minutes.

Chelsea’s clean sheet potential looked to be on the rise with the big-money signings of Wesley Fofana (£4.4m) and Kalidou Koulibaly (£5.5m) but the latter has had his initial struggles and neither was named in Potter’s first starting XI against RB Salzburg last week.

Still, the new Chelsea boss did turn Brighton into a defensively competent outfit during his time on the south coast, and hopes are high that he’ll not just solidify a wobbly backline but allow James the freedom to express himself further forward.

Left: goal attempts (shots on target in green) Right: chances created (assists in green)

The 2021/22 campaign saw James deliver five goals and nine assists from just 1,867 league minutes – less than 21 full matches. He already has one of each this time, with an xGI that is only beaten by Trent Alexander-Arnold (£7.4m) amongst defenders.

The fixtures are also about to improve for the Blues, who avoid all of last season’s top four between now and the World Cup break.

Some managers were punished for going with the Chelsea defensive double-up in the early weeks of the season but perhaps Marc Cucurella (£5.2m) is on the radar again now that Potter is around, with the Spaniard vital to how his new/old boss set up at Brighton.

    Trent James Cucurella Fofana Trippier

Future points are more important than past ones.

Chelsea were with Tuchel with injury to Kante, the main protector of the Realm (read Clean Sheets )

I know it’s a gamble but I am considering it.

Who else has better fixtures from defensive point of view in GW 10, 11 and 12?

I don't think it's a bad idea. Chelsea defence won't be bad, and a couple of cheapies in there.

That said, I don't think I would consider Fofana an option as I think he's only about clean sheets, and that's not very exciting.

The fixtures are good but not so amazing as to make him worth it imo, and he blocks an attacker that you might want before the World Cup.

If you expect him to be in the mix for goals, potentially, then go for it.

For 4.4m 2 CSs in GW 9-13 would be perfect for me and superb value , no need for attacking value

Fofana is Chelsea’s best center back, no one is better than him atm

2 CSs in 5 gameweeks would be superb value? Juuuhuuuu are insaaaaaane! But if that's what you think, then you should definitely do it!

There are 21 defenders above Fofana on RMT for that time period and 13 below and within 1.0 point. I don't think he stands out, unlike players with defensive and attacking potental. 9 above him with a max price of 5.0 and 5.0 above him with a max price of 4.5. Still not saying he's a bad pick, but really, really don't think he's 'superb value'. 😀

I agree with you, your points are right on point.

The question is which defender for up to 4.4m will outscore him in GW 10, 11 and 12?

              Fofana is the future

The primary source of points for any defender is the clean sheet. I would not buy James and Trent as they have been unable to keep enough cleansheets to reflect their premium price. Attacking returns add points to their tally but not enough to justify their price.

    My defense focus on cleansheets:
    Cancelo, Trippier, Saliba, 4.5, Neco

which I got in GW3 wildcard and as expected, they returned the maximum clean sheets and maximum points.

Meanwhile, Saliba has 12 pts from clean sheets and 32 points not from clean sheets.

James and Chilwell only 4 pts from CS and 18-19 pts not from CSs

I would argue those points are not enough for their price.

What I mean is, cleanshee is one of the selection criteria. Attacking return is another selection criteria. I would only select premium players who provide both cleansheets and attacking returns. Only cleansheets are not going to be enough. Only attacking returns are not going to be enough. I need both.

Considering the rest, I thank you for the correction of your original statement. You could have done that in your first reply below 😉

I don't necessarily agree with your perspective or approach, but it's good to see that you agree that the primary source of points for any defender is not necessarily the clean sheets.

        • 12 Years

Lol. I like what you did there, but those numbers will mislead users who would think those non-cleansheet-points come from attacking returns. "Not from clean sheets" = bonus + appearance points + goals/assists - cards/own-goals

For example, Cancelo got 8 bonus points from 4 cleansheets. Only 9 points from attacking till now.

        1. Deulofail

Lol. "Not from clean sheets" = "Not from clean sheets". You were entirely wrong. It would be misleading (incorrect) to say otherwise.

Bonus points come from a range of actions that are covered in the BPS, including attacking actions (which also relied on his attacking actions (creating big chances, successful crosses, key passes, etc) as well as defensive actions that are not clean sheets.

Even if you do count bonus for clean sheets (which is misleading again), then you are still incorrect with this sweeping statement, because there are players for which this is demonstrably not true, both this season and historically. In fact, the expensive attacking defenders are priced high for this reason. Check out James last season for an obvious example.

Okay. I stand corrected: The primary source of points for a defender is not the clean sheet.

But, I will still buy defenders from teams with higher chance of a cleansheet. Only attacking threat (without clean sheets) not enough for my liking.

              🙂

I don't think there are any playing defenders whose chance of clean sheets is 0, so I'm still not a fan of the way you categorise the sources of points and use those categories for make decisions, BUT... I don't care, that's up to you 😀 Just wanted to correct your initial assertion/generalistation

Then how do you select your defenders? I look at xG conceded for the team, the xGI of the player and baseline BPS of the player.

Of course, no players have a 0 chance of clean sheets. We look at numbers to compare between different players.

For example, the moment I see that xG conceded numbers are improving for Liverpool (and becomes comparable to Arsenal and City) then I have to buy Trent because his xGI and baseline BPS are great.

I don't say or think things like

                  - James and Trent only have attacking threat (without clean sheets).

                  - Only attacking returns are not going to be enough (implying that some premium players (like James and Trent) have no clean sheet potential)

                  - Only clean sheets are not going to be enough (implying that some premium players have no attacking threat)

                  - Premium players need a certain amount of clean sheets, or clean sheet potential, before I factor in their attacking potential

And other thought processes that reduce the resolution of the data to absolute 1s or 0s, which increases the noise and error, or ordering the decision-making sequence in such a way that some important data isn't even considered. I prefer to, at least, attempt to calculate points potential in a more granular, all-encompassing way.

If that doesn't make sense, then it's okay. My brain is a bit tired for thinking right now. I'm happy for you to do it your way

Interesting! I think like the 4 points you mentioned: the last 3 points are exactly how I think, except the implied parts within braces. The first point is wrong: I think James and Trent have attacking threat and *also* clean sheet potential but (as of now) less than City, Arsenal, Newcastle. Especially, the fourth point is exactly how I select defenders for my team, I could not have phrased it better myself. The next step in my thinking process is:

                    - Premium players need a certain amount of attacking potential after I have factored in their clean sheet potential.

Maybe I am doing it wrong but I don't know how to do it better. How do I "calculate points potential in a more granular, all-encompassing way"?

Looks like this might be my best WC option (TV is low I believe). Look solid enough?

Kilman to cover Tripps when needed. 0.5itb to get TAA for Cancelo in 12. Only other key decision would be TAA over Toney or replacing Martinelli for the tough fixtures and blank.

    Guaita

Cancelo, James, Trippier

Salah, Maddison, Zaha, Martinelli

    Haaland, Mitrovic, Toney

    Cancelo, Trippier, Saliba (Williams, Patterson)

    KDB, Sterling, Martinelli, Gross (Andreas)

    Haaland Jesus Toney

I took a hit just after Spurs game, exact money, still have WC, don't wanna use it before GW13. Would normally say wait until closer to deadline because of injuries etc but go for it if you think it's an upgrade and you'll be priced out otherwise. Toney's playing well though, lovely price, and Sterling's a better prospect than inconsistent Zaha, though not if he's gonna stay at LWB.

Thought this would happen...my post a couple of days ago:

        Quick thought!

In the FPL community we like a good acronym/abbreviation etc like 'itb' 'FT' 'FH' 'WC' 'TC' etcetc

I think there will soon be an issue though.

        Wildcard (WC)
        and
        World Cup (WC)

        ...use the same initials!!

So if I said I wanted to WC before the WC it might confuse others.

If I was paying for membership I'd want more for my money than read that Cancelo, James and Trippier are good defender choices for GW9.

    Now looking now!

Which nailed on keeper has made the least number of saves this season? He doubled his average number of total saves in seven games, in a game where he didn't keep a cleansheet.

Thinking about dead-ending and WC in gw13, but still quite unsure if it is worth the hassle. (Will probably get Zaha for Martinelli by downgrading Jesus or TAA next week)

With the return of Gueye I'm expecting better things from the Everton defence henceforth.
I have a soft spot for new captain Conor Coady, but Patterson is an absolute steal at his price point. I hope his injury is not too bad.
Some tricky fixtures on the horizon, but I firmly believe there is more to come from an already vastly improved defence.

Everton may keep a fair few clean sheets over the next few games. Looking forward to bring in Everton defender. Which players will play the maximum game time? Which players have highers chance of goals/assists?

Patterson has been looking mighty dangerous recently and gets forward often so it has to be him. I think his cover Coleman is pain free now but Nathan has played every minute so far.
Coady could mop up the baps moving forward though, I might get 'em both! 🙂

Tarkowski at £4.3m looks decent, to me. Fond of an occasional attacking return and is the best of the current backline for mins per BBPS.

If you buy Ultimate Edition you get the full game on 27 September.
If you buy Standard Edition you get the full game on 30 September.
Is it possible to pre-order the Standard Edition and get 10 hour early access on 27 September?

Just saw Andy saying on twitter that you need to finish 9999th to be in top 10k and I found it strange to understand. When we say top 4 in PL then we include the 4th so why when we say top 10k we don’t include the 10.000th

Top 4 includes 4th but top 10K doesn't include 10,000th? Andy's mathematical skills are questionable. 9999th is inside the top 10,000, above or past 10,000th place by 1. 10,000 is in the top 10,000, includes 1st to 10,000th.

    Sterling Gundogan Martinelli (Paqueta Andreas)
    Haaland Kane Jesus

Having a crap season so far, around 3M rank. Feel the need to shake things up a bit.. Gundogan and Paqueta has to go asap. Willing to take a hit, or maybe even two.

    How does this sound?
    Gundogan, Paqueta, Jesus ->
