Don't you think there are better alternatives upfront? I consider Kane and Messi - at least the opening game of England and Argentina is good with great goal scoring potential. Argentina should also go through to the next round.

Wouldn't go Kane, England won't score many. I've got three lions in my defence. Tripps and Shaw a must for me.

Lukaku, Depay, Martinez atm, but trying to get Messi.

What are your thoughts on Musiala? Looked incredible against England.

I just recall the opener of England during the 2018 WC where they crushed Panama 6-1. I could see that happening again in the first game.
I consider Stones in def, will he play?
Musiala is hyped and I am trying to separate the hype from facts/potential. I do not fancy the German side too much and do not really follow Munich so don’t know, to be honest.

Yeah, they're certainly capable of crushing teams. but when England are ahead they seem to like holding onto the ball and not to force things. England's assistant, Steve Holland, won the Premier League whilst the assistant of both Mourinho and Conte, so he understands that defensive football rules in high-pressure knock-out tournaments. I'm sure Kane will get goals, but 11.0m is steep when you compare him to Lukaku (9.5m) fed by KDB, and Martinez (8.0m) the main central threat for Argentina.

Yeah, I'm yet to do research on newer teams like Germany and Spain. Don't know much about their XIs. I'm sure sure Neale will shed some light...

6 against Panama in a Russian summer. Hard to see them score 6 in climate that will suit Iran better than England. Taremi in very good form for Porto too.

Musiala doesn't look nailed on for Germany yet.

Unless you're picking keeper or defenders for cleansheet potential team results not as important as player points. Can do nicely in defeat and unlimited transfers for Round of 16.

Yeah, and Iran are no Panama. They can be a tricky side to break down.

Ah, okay thanks. I'll hold on Musiala. Midfield is difficult outside of KDB, Eriksen, Bergwijn atm. I'm sure new idea will pop up in future articles...

Hojbjerg could be worth a look. Not the passing or attacking threat of Eriksen but will make plenty of tackles in Danish midfield, maybe a few key passes bonus.

But would he even get a single game given who's in front of him? Foden and Mount have more experience in the high-pressure big games.

I like that Burn can provide much needed cover for the LB position, and is 6'6. Set pieces so important.

Don't think it's so much that Foden and Mount have more international experience than Madisson but moreso that Southgate is too pragmatic, a creative flair mid is against his beliefs. Good point on Dan Burn, playing great stuff, but he's uncapped at any international level. How would Southgate sleep worrying about that ? 😉

Basically, if I were manager this is how I'd play the team:

      Pickford
      Trippier Stones Gomez Shaw
      Rice Bellingham
      Foden Mount Sterling
      Kane

      ---------

Maddison goes in for Mount depending on the match situation.
Saka for Sterling, with Foden on the left.
Potentially shift Bellingham further up , but I don't trust Philips.

Phillips earned my trust in the Euros. What a performance. Only worry is fitness and sharpness.

That's fair if you're happy with a back 4. Personally I don't think we have the quality at CB to expose our rear so openly. We'd be bent over and shafted.

When at United, Mourinho was once questioned why he played a back 3 when so few CBs were fit, and he said that's exactly why he did it, to cover for that weakness. You need a solid base for your attackers to push from or you'll struggle for control. Every time you lose the ball, the defenders will get turned inside out on the counter and you'll have to sink back into your own half again. But win it back immediately and you keep pressure in the opponent's half and keep control. Unfortunately I think we're forced into a back 3, for that solid base.

          Very valid points.

That England defence is probably no worse than any of the top teams. Back 5 seems to suit England though, basically handing over the initiative to any half decent team with fast, attacking players.

The only issue with a back 5 is that I really don't think they have any good CBs. England may as well load up on midfielders (where they are strong) and play on the front-foot, even if that means conceding possession and tracking back a bit more.

I'm amount to commit internet suicide:

Maguire has some pretty big flaws, but his strengths aren't talked about enough. In the right system he can be a useful player. He's capable of stepping up into midfield and playing incisive passes, and he's good at controlling tight areas. His problem is when he's given large spaces to defend, but that's offset for England by playing a back 3, covered by Stones and Walker's pace. Credit to the likes of Chiellini and Gareth for coming out and defending him.

Just remember how pivotal he was for England in the Euros and World Cup: https://editorial.uefa.com/resources/026b-12be97f0eb55-f63972b16d03-1000/format/free1/tott_long.jpg?imwidth=158

He does get more negative press compared to other players, which may be more targeted to him personally than his football.

He does have some physicality and aerial threat useful as a defender, although I don't think he should get any preferential treatment (cuz he done it before).
That negative press has had an impact on his game no doubt, just like Alexander-Arnold.

Would still go with Gomez, his all round game seems better and tackling is good - doesn't get much of a mention cuz of those long-term injuries.
The so-called howler v Leeds was probably just as much as the goalie's fault, should've anticipated that pass back even if slightly astray.

If you have absolutely no other players to get rid of and a FT to burn then sure. Dier has LEE (H) which is arguably a slightly worse defensive fixture (but not bad by any means) than Gabriel with WOL (A), plus you can save 0.1-0.2m by going for Gabriel.

Hey Dane. What are your thoughts on Andreas Skov Olsen? Really impressed me in the bits I've seen with Bruges & his recent international record looks great too. Just not sure where he fits in a WB system, or do you guys not play 3 at the back anymore..?

        1. TheDane

The challenge with the Danish team is that there’s little top scorer potential (in a fantasy football context) - goals comes from many players.
ASO was outstanding in the most recent win against France and they always plays with three on top: two wingers and a striker. Striker is either Dolberg, Cornelius or Wind but none of these are outstanding currently (or have returned from injury). Cornelius scored two in Paris earlier this year but has just returned from an injury.

ASO is always a winger but it is unclear how the coach will consider alternatives as Braithwaite or Yussef Poulsen (most prefers ASO). Even Damsgaard has played that role and now with Lindstom doing well in Frankfurt they may rotate players in that role depending on the opponent and to preserve energy. I only consider Maehle (or possibly Lindstrom) from the Danish team.

Cheers TD. Good advice there. I have Maehle and Hojbjerg for now but lots of hours to replace and reassign them and others! Best of luck to yourself and Denmark.

Hojbjerg is a solid player, but doesn't score many goals for the national team. He also plays behind Eriksen, between midfield and defence. If you are looking for goal threats I think there are better options. '
Have you considered Eden Hazard from Belgium?

Not yet. Hojbjerg 33 ball recoveries in Champions League, about equivalent of tackles made.

In World Cup will get a Bonus Point every 3 tackles made and same for every 2 Key Passes made and cheaper than Eriksen.

I think similarly priced mids to Hazard have more attacking potential than him.

Utd fan here. I wouldn’t recommend Ericksen - cracking player, good with both feet, great at set pieces but he’s to be surrounded by an inferior quality of player while playing for his country compared to what he’s used to at club level. He’s very well rounded and might well be asked to sit a bit deeper for these reasons.

The Danish national team is 100% playing better football than Man United. On paper, their players are inferior, but they play really well as a team and that shouldn't be underestimated, it's really rare in international football. If Eriksen is indeed involved in set pieces and build up, he could be a good pick.

Being surrounded by inferior players at his national team does not need to be a negative thing in this context. Eriksen was the top goal scorer for the national team before the incident at Euro cup and since then he has not really scored for his club team. He did score against Croatia back in September during the Nations league defeat and he has a more offensive role when playing for Denmark - instead of being thrown around at Man U in multiple positions. He is also on penalties.

Senegal will compete without their talisman Mane, because he got injured in the last (and kind of pointless) game before the World Cup. Similar story could happen with Mitrovic, if he's going to be risked this weekend. I expect Serbia to get in contact with Fulham and inform them to be extra cautious with him, or maybe even politely ask them not to play him.

Think Firmino will start at the weekend, it was pretty harsh him not being selected by Brazil so think he will get the nod by Klopp

    Wilson > Jesus?

Can’t see any other burning issues in my team. Have both Foden and haaland, but keen to hold…

Or should I be looking at Foden > Saka?

Unless we hear Wilson is out I'm certainly keeping him. His xG stats are great, Newcastle are banging them in and Chelsea have a lot of injuries at the back.

What would you do if we know that Foden doesn't start but Mitro does? Have 1FT.

Sell Foden and play Mitro? Sell Foden, bench Mitro and play Castagne? Sell both for a hit?

    1. The Biscuitmen
      • 3 Years

Mitro at home is always a threat so if he plays I'd start him. If they both don't play then you're probably going to get more upside from swapping Foden to Saka/Kulu/Zaha/Trossard

Do you mean you will wait again for a leak just seconds before fpl servers crash?
If you have time then I would sell Foden

I actually hope that Foden will play and I'm willing to just lock&keep him in the XI. About Mitro, he plays or not, I've been thinking him to Darwin, pull the trigger?

Lads. Check out the rules and points allocation criteria for each position in FIFA game. It's not same as FPL or UCL. Can get decent points from players that don't have attacking potential to allow more scope to get players with attacking potential in your 15.

I've managed to avoid any DMs so far, with just minimal consideration of tackle pts feeding into one or two picks like Aaronson. It seems a fine option if budget is stretched but I wonder if the "tackle" count will come in a bit lower than UCL "ball recoveries" by not including interceptions and therefore cap DMs score at around 5pts?

Yeah. A bit more clarity on what defines a tackle made and key pass would be great. Key pass could be any pass assisting to a shot on target but not clear enough.

I do have some ethical qualms about engaging with this World Cup at all, even in the minimal form of playing the fantasy game (I certainly wouldnt go there). But honestly I don't really have that much a of a patriotic affiliation so I'll enjoy it more through a fantasy lens than I would otherwise

Tyler Adams & Casemiro both average over 4 tackles per 90 this season, having played significant minutes. Think they'd be good cheaper alternatives to some of the more attacking midfielders as +1 point for 3 tackles.

Worth a bench boost ? (plan to upgrade Neco to Perisic )

    Ward Ederson
    Cancelo Trippier Perisic Doherty Schar
    Andreas Bailey Salah Zaha Martinelli
    Solanke Haaland Kane

Seems decent chance Doherty starts and Mitro will be out so Andreas on pens. So BB could be a nice move

If Doherty is not likely to start i will probably just play 11 and bench Ward Doherty Andreas Bailey

Reports suggesting Mane is out of the World Cup.

I think this is nonsense, he still has two weeks until the first game.
If it's several weeks out, they should still take him to Qatar.
Senegal have a good chance of qualifying from Group A anyway, and he'll be more than ready for the Last 16 match - even 75% fit.

Failed reply - 75% fit Mane greater than any other player available for Senegal.

I'd even have 75% Mane over Saka, Rashford, Sterling at 100% anytime.

You'd be a bit daft to think he'll miss the World Cup if the injury is not that serious.

Do you have any knowledge of sport injuries / Medicine in general?

I say this since this comment comes across as extremely naive and simplistic. We are talking here of elite sports performance with a national medical department together with an elite top 5 world team medical department doing assessments - an Bayern are industry leaders in sports medicine.

75% fit generally refers to lost aerobic capacity since the player needs time to regain lost fitness due to injury related in activity ( in simple terms the injury prevents normal functioning to maintain running capacity). Hence a player can come on for 20min when not fully 'fit'.

Manes isnt 75% fit - he is injured.

Mane appears to have some sort of Tendon injury - for this to heal he will not be able to any activity and be very limited - its clearly pretty bad if he is ruled out as of now - as the time for the injury just to heal would be longer than the world cup itself. And thats just to heal - ignoring the other issues of lost fitness

Your idea that this is a daft decision belies little to no understanding of elite sport performance or injuries. The only way they would bring him is if the injury is very minor , will heal in 1-2 weeks and he would be fit enough to play at the highest level directly

Its in Senegals interest to bring him - if he is ruled out its because its not minor and he would not be able to recover in time.

Il take that as a compliment.

I like how in 2022 bringing any knowledge or expertise to a subject is seen as 'buzzkill'.

Even on a fantasy football website site specifically discussing injuries its buzzkill to provide insight regarding the injury.

Duly noted , gona take a break from here.
