Suspensions

In this regular article, we look at the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) players who are a caution away from a one-match ban.

We also round up which FPL assets are already suspended ahead of the Gameweek 18 deadline.

A reminder: punishments for yellow card accumulation are competition-specific, whereas suspensions for dismissals cover all competitive matches.

We’ll update this article after the completion of Leeds United v Manchester City, the final match of Gameweek 17.

CURRENTLY SUSPENDED

Just three players are banned for the Premier League’s next round of fixtures, none of whom are well-owned FPL assets.

Moises Caicedo (£5.0m) picked up his fifth booking of the campaign in the win over Southampton, so he’ll sit out Gameweek 18 as a result.

Two Palace players, James Tomkins (£3.9m) and Tyrick Mitchell (£4.5m) are suspended for their New Year’s Eve trip to Bournemouth after receiving red cards against Fulham.

ON FOUR YELLOW CARDS

A total of 23 players are on the verge of suspension.

William Saliba (£5.3m), Harry Kane (£11.6m),  Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.9m) and Fabian Schar (£4.9m) are notable names as they all have double-digit ownerships in FPL, while an ‘out of position’ Leon Bailey (£4.5m) is also in just under 5% of squads.

Bryan Mbeumo (£5.8m), Yves Bissouma (£4.7m) and Daniel Podence (£5.3m) all joined the ‘four bookings’ club in Gameweek 17.

A further 35 players are on three yellow cards, including Bukayo Saka (£8.0m), Ben White (£4.7m), Andreas Pereira (£4.6m) and Kieran Tripper (£5.9m).

WHEN ARE THE CUT-OFF POINTS FOR SUSPENSIONS?

The table above is taken from the Football Association website and details the cut-off points for the various yellow card thresholds.

The one we’re concerned about right now is the five-caution mark, an unwanted target that Premier League players will have to avoid for their team’s first 19 league matches of the season.

Following the wave of postponements in the autumn and fixture rearrangements over the World Cup break, that is no longer Gameweek 19 for most teams.

Team19th fixture falls in…
ArsenalGameweek 21
Aston VillaGameweek 20
BournemouthGameweek 20
BrentfordGameweek 20
BrightonGameweek 21
ChelseaGameweek 20
Crystal PalaceGameweek 21
EvertonGameweek 20

Man UtdGameweek 21
NewcastleGameweek 20
Nottm ForestGameweek 20
SouthamptonGameweek 20
SpursGameweek 20
West HamGameweek 20
WolvesGameweek 20

The above will change if there are any further rearrangements of the postponed fixtures before that.

Keep your eyes peeled on our Suspension Tightrope widget over the coming weeks and months, as we’ll be updating that after every Gameweek to keep you informed on the latest disciplinary developments.

Anyone brave enough to cap Salah over Haaland next Gameweek, woeful gambles earlier in the season are being drowned out just now.

I've currently got the armband on Salah, could very well bottle it prior to deadline though.

Salah looked little better than earlier this season when his positioning was often extrememy wide (where TAA used to be). But I don't think it's yet time to play russian roulette with 4/6 bullets instead of only one.

So bringing in Trossard and Martial instead of Rashford and Mitrovic has stung!
Also moved Robbo to James. Something else to try sort out now too.

Too knee jerky to take -4 and get Rashford and Mitrovic before the next deadline?

    James can wait...

I also brought in Trossard over an Arsernal mid though, have Rash. Talk of a Brighton double swayed me grrr. That said I'm holding one more week he normally does well playing the better teams.

Anyone looking at Havertz instead of Mitro for DGW19?

No worries about YCs and xMins went up in my prediction. I was surprised he started ahead of Auba especially when Auba stayed at the club over the WC and well rested. Doesn't seem to be favoured.

Don't have either but Mitrovic is well Fulham's most dominant attacker. Havertz has a bit of competition for Chelsea's attacking points from Mount, Pulisic, Sterling. Aubameyang doesn't look interested. Sterling was very lively, doesn't look far off bringing some decent returns.

      1. Tonyawesome69

Of course Mitro being the talisman, on pens and nailed 90mins are good reasons to go with him

He's nearly exactly the kind of player that Chelsea need.

Definitely has differential value. If Chelsea stay in form could be ideal as it would be potential points from Havertz and also frustrate Mitro owners if he blanks when they two teams play. Only thing is, not sure if I trust Chelsea.

Havertz as a punt worked well for those that took the chance this week but think we're all quickly forgetting Potter's penchant for rotation, could play Aubameyang next week and then suddenly it's back to square one of never being sure if he'll play from week to week

^ This. 1 CS in 11GW while I owned him. And the defence looks even worse now tbh. A couple of assists just isn't enough to dig out of that kind of hole

I'm not sure who to trust among the City CBs tbh. In isolation, I'd say Botman, but he could be problematic for GW19 if you're heavily invested in New & Ars defence

    Don't know who to bench!

    Fabianski (BRE)
Cancelo (EVE) Robertson (LEI) Trippier (LEE) Thiago (NFO)
Salah (LEI) Kulusevski (AVL) Rashford (WOL)
Haland (EVE) Martial (WOL) Adams (FUL)

bench: Benrahma (BRE), Andreas (SOU), Patterson(MCI)+Ward(LIV)

Fulham's defence suck and I believe in Adams more than in Andreas, but SOU's defence is absolutely unfit and Bazunu sucks..
Benrahma could be great, but over whom? Thiago (fitness/managed minutes)? Trippier (I like LEE and they could score but nah)

    1. bombonera

Don't bench Trippier, probably ever tbh. I'm toying with the idea of captaining him next week. If you trust in Adams over Pereira then go for him. I'd be tempted to play Benrahma over Silva, short turnaround for him this week and he was limping early on although went to play the full game, could see him getting a rest this week

      1. Club-De-Belon

I guess you are right about Trippier. That boy is golden.

Pretty similar to mine. I got Mitrovic in for Martial last night.

Wouldn't worry about lack of united. They hardly set the world alight and were playing a really poor forest side. Fixtures aren't amazing going forward if you missed the last game.

I have 0 ITB right now.

Will leave it like this this week. Eyeing up getting Odegaard in for Saka, then using the money to upgrade James to Robertson.

If Arsenal sign Mudryk presumably not spending that much cash on bench warmer. Would this make Martinelli a much less attractive option ( as Smith - Rowe possibly back also soon ) and boost appeal of Ødegaard ? Not sure if I was Martinelli I would be thrilled with this potential signing!

its an odd signing, much like Viera there is no easy route for him into the team, the first 11 is as nailed as it gets in the prem, though the squad depth is lacking, but like you say that's a lot of money for a bench warmer

But we're one more injury away from a full on crisis in attack, so it makes sense.

We've been lacking in wide cover for a while, so strengthening there makes a lot of sense.

Especially as Martinelli could play up front.

yeah i suppose that one signing can cover 2 positions if an injury happens to Nketiah or Martinelli, he still needs an injury to happen to get into the team though

New player in a new league

He will get some minutes of the bench and play in the cup

No chance he will be ready to start

A whole process of getting used of a new country and culture and language etc - nothing to worry about for fpl

Can a DGW squad of 15 beat the template over the next 6 weeks ?

Template at the top of fpl is strong this year -all worlds top 25 or so has had a very similar team structure for many weeks now before and after the WC - just a small inclusion of James / Rashford/ Kepa after the WC with people selling Pope / Trossard / Saka / Jesus etc

    Basically this :

    Kepa
    Cancelo Trippier James(White, Patterson )
    Almiron Salah Martinelli Rashford (Andreas)
    Kane, Mitro or Martial, Haaland

Wonder if due to so many options a squad where you bench someone in your front 8 and get more DGW players would be more optimal?

Its basically using Kane money to get more dgw players

Which will get more over the coming weeks? Template A or rotating squad for dgw B

A ) Kane Almiron Andreas Patterson

    B) Martial Mount Trossard Esptudian

The one nice thing about B) is you could keep and bench excellent longterm cheap options (Rashford / Martial / for few games (20, 21) when they have red fixtures and still cover Brigton/ Arsenal who may have a few doubles -

Mount could be come Foden for City double etc.
Mitro for Nketiah for dgw etc

B surely will get more points due to the dgw than the template?

Dude, this is way too much text to expect people to read and reply to.

I am mixed though so I don't know if A or B would score more.

        Just a thought experiment 🙂

Basically with so many viable cheap options with upcoming doubles and perman Haaland captain it may lend to keeping the likes of

Rashford martial Martinelli Salah Haaland Trossard longterm

and use transfers to move e.g Mitro and Mount to Nketiah and Foden for their dgws

If one goes with the template then the only way to cover dgw for Trossard / Arsenal etc would be to sell the likes of Rashford which isnt ideal

A is very nice indeed - its basically the team everyone in the top 100 has

Only downside is you would need to sell say Rashford for Trossard to get brighton dgw in 21
Or salah to KDB in 20 etc

Wonder if Kane is still worth it with 3 viable sub 6.8mil forwards with dgw coming

i have the same dilemma regarding Ward but also with the bigger problem of playing Bueno or Patterson for James, so i think i might just get Walker for James as he has a high chance for a cs and play Ward against Pool, then get Kepa next week as i don't think he's worth a hit even against Forest

                Whats the squad?

An argument can be made to move as close as possible to something like this (top 100 in world template) - so maybe try to have all of Kane + Salah + Mitro

                Kepa Ward
                Trippier Cancelo (Shaw?) White Bueno
                Andreas Salah Martinelli Almiron Rashford
                Kane Mitro Haaland

With James and Wilson out what's the play here?

                  Kepa
                  Cancelo, Trippier, James
                  KDB, Mount, Rashford, Martinelli

                  Ward, Andreas, Patterson, Bueno

I'm currently looking at getting Cucurella for James, because Andreas off the bench is ok, but Patterson and Bueno vs City and United are not lol
