Here, two-time Indian FPL champion Lateriser talks about taking points hits for upcoming Double Gameweeks.

The FFS Pro Pundits 34

We’re officially into Double Gameweek season.

My head has been spiralling due to the process of accumulating as much information as possible (which I’ve been thoroughly enjoying) and I feel like this week will essentially set up our teams until the Wildcard. In this article, I want to talk about a few strategic factors.

TAKE HITS?

Firstly, if there’s one week where you should not be afraid to take hits, it’s this one. Especially if you’re looking to bring in players from both Manchester teams. Having read this article on how to navigate the Blank Gameweeks, it looks like we’re setting up our teams until approximately Gameweek 28.

There are already murmurs of an additional Manchester United double in Gameweek 22 and, irrespective of this, they have a good run of fixtures from Gameweeks 22 to 27 – at home to Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Brentford and Southampton, plus trips to Leeds United and Liverpool.

It makes me think that going with three of their players is a decent idea, despite tough immediate games against Manchester City and Arsenal.

FPL Gameweek 15 tips: Best players to sign, captains, predicted line-ups + team reveals 1

FODEN AND CANCELO OUT?

Speaking of the neighbours, Pep Guardiola’s side has Double Gameweeks 20 and 23, so getting the right combination might be fruitful for the mid-term. I currently have Phil Foden (£8.2m) and Joao Cancelo (£7.2m) in my team and I’m almost certainly going to sell one of them to prioritize buying Kevin De Bruyne (£12.5m).

Given the double-double, good fixture run and quality of their team, I think that instead of looking at safe transfers, this is an opportunity to ‘mini Wildcard’ and secure the right players from these two teams, even if it takes a few hits.

In fact, I expect hits to fly amongst engaged managers, where most of the tuned-in crowd will probably begin the round on minus four points.

I have been scratching my head thinking about whether to sell Foden and/or Cancelo. As things stand, Man City’s best front four consists of Erling Haaland (£12.2m), De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez (£7.5m) and Jack Grealish (£6.8m).

Since the post-World Cup restart, this has been Pep’s first choice – especially against a team that plays with a back four. When diving deep into researching his selections, I realised there are so many moving parts with regard to opposition set-ups and individual match-ups. Selecting a certain player affects who is picked on the other side.

FPL review: Darwin injury latest, United's fixtures + Foden benching

BUY MAHREZ?

However, I’ve emerged with a belief that Mahrez is an enticing punt because he looks like their sharpest player right now. I’m fairly confident he faces Man United and, while his chances of starting against Spurs’ back five are reduced, his form is currently as good as it gets and I’m hoping Pep simply sees him as undroppable.

Conversely, the problem with Guardiola is that – as my fellow Pro Pundit and podcast co-host Zophar worded it – Mahrez is very much flavour of the moment but he’s one bad performance away from being dropped again, escalated by their wonderful bench options.

I am going to make a late decision, especially as sickness ruled Grealish out of Sunday’s FA Cup win. If that’s still the case, it greatly increases Foden’s chance of starting.

Indulging in a Man City midfielder not named De Bruyne – with his high number of expected minutes – obviously brings substantial risk. If Grealish is fit, I think I’ll roll the dice on Mahrez.

Furthermore, we might be targetting Arsenal assets from around Gameweek 22, giving a decent ‘out’ should Mahrez not succeed. Even selling Cancelo isn’t an easy decision because, while he might be out of favour right now, one good performance puts him right back in.

I’ll just leave you with this quote from Guardiola, while we scratch our heads trying to pick the right players:

“I have a few ideas, thoughts – ridiculous ones – against [Manchester] United but I still didn’t watch the last games. I have to see the way they play at home and if they change something. That is why I don’t have a clear line-up against United.”

It is worth repeating that selling Foden or going for another Man City midfielder is a very high-risk game that could easily backfire. Zophar, for example, is not even considering Mahrez and is going with the safer John Stones (£5.4m) instead.

After tonight’s Carabao Cup outing, I will be sitting down with Luke. He has been predicting Pep fairly successfully since last season and I want to see what his opinion is, which you can view on Thursday via our YouTube channel.

We also assessed Double Gameweek assets of both now and the future in our current episode of The FPL Wire which you can view below:

Always a threat. It only takes one match to turn things around and although Spurs and MUN are tough opponents that doesn't mean they won't concede. Can always swap to Salah next week.

This whole swapping to Salah next week after taking him out for a hit and then probably also taking another hit so you can bring in fellow DGWeekers probably isn't going to be the points bonanza people are hoping for.

I thought that too, but last year decided to take the opposite approach and went through all the big DGWs and BGWs doing that and it allowed me to arrive at a much higher rank than my previous year. From 700K to 30K. I don't think it hurts to take hits on the doubles considering the potential payoff, even if a few blank.

Does Salah have a double though? Playing Chelsea back to back seems unlikely to me but I really don't know to be honest. If no double for pool does Salah to KDB make sense? I might do it for free this week

The biggest thing I dislike is the comments almost NEVER focus on the article. Its 90% rate my team and which player should I add and should I take a hit.
Still helpful. But the articles could benefit from additional discourse in the comments IMO.

Try reading again. I think he does a good job delving into the complex City mechanics. Doesn't spoonfeed you an answer because there's too many moving parts still but basically suggests selling one of them for Mahrez (depending on Grealish's fitness - which determines Foden's chances of starting).

So useless Darwin MIGHT get a DGW next week, both of which would be against Chelsea?

Granted Chelsea aren't very solid defensively, but I'm not holding on to that donkey for THAT.

Not when he likely won't play both.

Gakpo and I believe Firmino ready to go again.

    No thanks.

I'll skip the DGW entirely I think

Don’t see Sterling as a priority sell with Palace coming up. Kane does normally score against Arsenal but that is the DGW from hell and Sterling has a goal and an assist since the break and hasn’t been flattered by that.

Not sure that I wouldn’t prefer Sterling against the Liverpool defence if that DGW happens than any given Liverpool attacker against Chelsea.

I've seen a lot of people ("content creators" as well as us regular lowlifes [lowlives?]) perpuating this idea that under Pep most players are "one bad performance away from a benching" and I'm wondering where it comes from. Grealish has had a few stinkers this season, KDB has had a few since the restart alone, Cancelo had a few in the first half of the season where he was nailed, yet most of these retained their places after poor games.

Surely even if a player doesn't perform to the top level in every game on an individual level, within a team that is so dependent on specific structures and what impact one player over their alternative has on a macro scale is this actually true? The likes of Mahrez, Grealish and Ake over Foden, Bernardo and Cancelo (for example) generally gives City a much slower but safer setup, while the opposite bunch give City a much more forward and quicker approach, but which can leave them more open to counter attacks. Doesn't the structural make-up of the squad trump one off performance if it means that the side still performs in the intended way, especially if they've had impressive games on the whole in recent weeks?

Not quite sure how to play my two FTs now this week. Plan was Zaha>Foden, seems pointless now. Leno was my bench boost punt, I could switch him to De Gea? Ties up more funds though in someone I don’t want long term. Or deal with Patterson and bring AWB in and start ahead of Saliba?

Second move is going to have to be Martial back in for Havertz only a week after I made the reverse move lol. Can’t see anyone else worth having. Leaves Zaha and Martial as spaces for future DGW punts.

Salah > KdB makes a lot of sense to me.

Then Cancelo > Stones if you don't like his chances of starting. Don't like Martial in this week because that slot is going to become Darwin most likely and you'd be taking a -4 for a super short term punt on an injury prone player.

Thoughts with 2 free transfers, lads, please:

    Ramsdale / Ward
Cancelo, Trippier, Shaw / Castagne, Patterson
    Salah, Saka, Rashford, Martinelli, Almirón
    Haaland, Kane / Greenwood

    a. Patterson to Lewis, save other FT
    b. Cancelo to Botman, save other FT
    c. Castagne to Ake/Walker/AWB
    d. Two of those
    e. Something else?

I wonder how many OPTA-defined "big chances" Darwin could miss in a septuple GW.

    A) Play Mitro
    B) Antony for -4

I really want to get a differential! My team is so template it hurts.

      A. Gakpo more fun if you want a real differential

Mitrovic might nearly be a differential in his own right this week. I don't trust Antony, not been great since the restart

    Is Darwin+Kulu to Kane+Almiron worth a hit?

Kulu back on grass ahead of Arsenal game so I’d maybe look at someone else to shift

Pulisic out for a few months and Sterling still possibly facing a spell out too with his first scan coming back inconclusive. Looks like Felix may be getting a lot of starts

Salah KDB Rashford (VC) Saka (Andreas)
    Haaland (C) Mitrovic (Greenwood)

    1FT, 0.9M ITB

Would you swap Walker to Stones? Or just roll FT?
