Our latest Members article series, reviving an old Scout strand called Tales of the Expected, explores the latest expected goals (xG) data, assessing each side from an attacking and defensive perspective.

In addition, we’ll also check out the form players on show, asking if their recent output is sustainable.

Having last looked at these tables after Gameweek 19, it’s time to revisit them again, armed with the latest stats from the restart.

Only Premium Members are able to read these pieces, so sign up today to get full access not just to the editorial content but all of the other benefits, from hundreds of Opta stats to a transfer planner.

TEAMS

First up, let’s take a look at the minutes per xG data since the end of the World Cup to find out what changes, if any, have occurred at Premier League clubs.

MINS PER XG: GAMEWEEK 17-21

The top five are unchanged since last time, but Brighton and Hove Albion are up two places to sixth. The Seagulls’ tally of 14 goals from 8.06 xG is remarkable, and as the players become more familiar with Roberto De Zerbi’s playing style, it’s exciting to think what they could achieve in the second half of the season.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are in desperate need of goals, with just six in their five games from Gameweek 17 onwards. They’ve underperformed their xG by 3.40 in that time, with Darwin Nunez (£8.8m) culpable for a whopping 2.71 of that total.

As for Newcastle United, they have scored even fewer – four goals from 8.75 xG. No team has underachieved more in front of goal than the Magpies since the restart, with 12 of their 16 ‘big chances’ fluffed.

Nottingham Forest maintained their momentum by registering their eighth point from 15 on Saturday, which suggests they are turning their season around. After 22 new players arrived in the summer, Steve Cooper is finally transforming them into a cohesive unit, although they do need to become more clinical in the attacking third.

That applies to Chelsea too, but there are signs that they are moving in the right direction again under Graham Potter. The Blues have won the xG battle in four of their six games since the Premier League resumed, they are just lacking that bit of composure in front of goal. Maybe new arrivals Mykhailo Mudryk (£7.0m) and Joao Felix (£7.5m) can help on that front, with some very decent fixtures on the horizon:

Elsewhere, London rivals Tottenham Hotspur haven’t created much since the restart, while Crystal Palace’s issues in attack could be good news for owners of Luke Shaw (£5.2m) in Gameweek 22. The Eagles have had 64 shots since the restart, but just three of those efforts have been Opta-defined ‘big chances’.

Thoughts on this WC? Enough money itb to do Bruno to KDB for DGW23

    -------------------DDG
    --------Trippier Schar Gabriel
    Fernandes Rashford Odegaard Saka Mitoma
    --------------Haaland Kane

    Ward Gnonto Bueno Zouma

Zouma is there for blank gw 25 (plays NFO). Will mean I only need to do Bruno to KDB & Mitoma to Andreas to put out 11 in that GW.

I never thought I'd play it so soon but I f felt I had sub optimum players from certain teams heading into an important couple of game weeks. For example Botman instead Schar. Martinelli instead of Odegaard. Shaw/DDG/Rash with no Bruno. Ferguson over Mitoma. Thought I'd make an early move. I say do it mate

Yeah makes sense to me, feel like I’m in a similar predicament. My only concern is saving WC until we have the big dgw’s to bring in a good side for BB

If Newcastle and man United make it to the carabao cup final (probable) then they will blank in 25 along with the teams they were supposed to be facing (Brentford & Brighton)

It’s great that so many people are still planning to keep or bring back the likes of KDB or Salah. It seems no one cares about the bang for their buck. Reminds me of my first girlfriend who could not live a day with a meaningfully positive cash balance.

This game is about absolute points, not value. Kdb is probably bad value but is likely to be a top5 midfielder in terms of points. So many good cheap alternatives so it’s easy to include premiums.

From gw23 to gw31 Kane plays 7 sides in bottom 8 of the league right now.

Other two fixtures are Chelsea and brighton in which i fancy him to score as well

In the dgw madness i urge not to sell Kane. He's in great form and oncourse to beat his best goal tally ever in a season

Assuming United have a DGW, I’m going to take a -4 to bring in Bruno this week for Andrea’s (selling Cancelo). However, next week I want to sell him and bring in Mahrez, unless something happens to indicate he is no longer Pep’s new favourite between now and then. Is it really worth taking a -4 this week to bring in a player I’ll be selling next week anyway. I hate taking hits so this is why I am asking (trying to convince myself it is a good idea)

    1. DARK SIDE OF THE LOON

Hi second appearance will only give 2 points net towards the -4 hit as you have to assume whoever else you would play instead will also start.

I'm a Newcastle fan and just expecting us to hit a tricky patch. Always felt like in the past, teams or players who hadn't scored for ages, scored against us. So wouldn't be surprised if Nunez or Salah scored.

Ahhh got you. Thanks for the clarification! I am not bothered about Liverpool. I think it will be a low scoring match and I honestly think that Newcastle could keep a CS. City, depends which City shows up - the disjointed one that looks like it can't be bothered or the free flowing one that scores for fun. Either way, everybody needs to play them at some point.

Got a couple of thoughts rattling in my head.
    1. Get Bruno
    2. Ignore the doubles...play long game.

    Ederson
    Trippier, Gabriel, Shaw*
    Rashford*, Mahrez, Odegaard, Martinelli, Rodrigo*
    Haaland, Martial*

    Ward, Kane, Botman, Bueno
    1ft, 2.9itb

    a/ Martinelli > Saka
    b/ Martinelli & Martial > Bruno & Gnonto (-4)
    c/ ???

In b/ I'd likely go Bruno > Saka for the next gw.

    Using 2 free transfers

A Mitro and KDB to Nketiah and Bruno or
B Kane and Almiron to Nketiah and Bruno
( opening possible move from Bruno to Mahrez in 23 for City triple attack)

In B can get Kane back for Mitrovic after City double with Mahrez to max 6.5 mid

    Kepa
    Trippier Botman Shaw
    KDB Saka Rashford Almiron
    Haaland Kane Mitrovic

    Ward White Andreas Patterson

    Dalot to ... Strujk?
    Almiron to Rodrigo?

I wouldnt overthink thix becauseof the DGW.

Keep Mitro thix week. There's always next.
Or Dalot to Bueno. You dont really need him.
      Or Almiron to Mitoma
Keep KDB. You'll only want him back next week and will have these and other fires to put out.

Obviously not a priority transfer, but a few people on WCs this week or next.

Anyone thinking Willian? (instead of Andreas/Almiron/5th mid basically)

Isn't the price only locked after the flag is removed?

I could be wrong. It's been a while since I bothered caring so much about price changes.

You're correct. Prices are only locked when a player suddenly switches from being 0% available to 100% available, which happens in two scenarios: just added to the game or just switched from a red flag to no flag (no intermediate yellow flag)

Yeah this is my problem. We have had it easy this season. I have gone most the season with at least 1m in the bank. Probably explains my shite rank.

No, he just needs more transfers out to trigger a price drop
Hence why Reece James has actually only fallen by 0.1m despite going from 2.4m owners to 1.3m owners

Thoughts on possible subs for GW22?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------
    Raya
    Trippier|Shaw|Cucurella
    Rashford(C)|Saka|KDB|Almiron
    Toney|Haaland|Kane

    Subs:Ward|Perisic|Andreas|Williams

    0.3 ITB
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Was thinking Perisic to another MNU defender, Martinez perhaps

Probably the best option for you given that KDB to Bruno would leave you seriously short of DGW23ers. You could then do Almiron to Odegaard that GW, and maybe get in an Arsenal defender or Nketiah as well.

I'm on 10 plus a sub keeper for that GW. If I do KDB to Bruno and back if United DGW I will just have to find a Estupiñán replacement to field an 11 with Rashford, Shaw and Trippier benched.

Probably worded that badly, I'll be without 8, so down to 7.

Triple man u, trip Newcastle, mitoma and toney.

3 transfers to get it up to 10 I guess!

Play for the points now. Saw a fair few play Shaw, White and Ward this week meaning they essentially only had 8 players score points.

I really want him but I would need to get rid of White to get him in which means it is two transfers. This week the priority is Bruno (assuming a double) and then the following week, probably Mahrez. This means by the time I get him in, Jesus will be making a come back

Yes I am in an identical boat to you mate. I also bit the bullet and went 352 with Mitoma and Ferguson so that 3rd striker spot is stuck without surgery. I was all intent on going for Saka in midfield instead.
