We assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Manchester City’s win over Aston Villa in our latest Scout Notes piece.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data for every single Premier League fixture.

Man City set up a massive match with Arsenal on Wednesday, by beating Aston Villa 3-1 to move within three points of the leaders. If they win that game in north London, they will go top of the Premier League on goal difference.

However, today’s match left FPL managers with plenty to ponder, which we’ll dissect below.

HAALAND INJURY LATEST

Erling Haaland (£12.2m) came off at half-time on Sunday after receiving a kick and will now be checked on in the coming days.

In an eventful afternoon, the Norwegian supplied the assist for Ilkay Gundogan’s (£7.3m) goal but failed to step up to take a penalty shortly after (more on that later), much to the frustration of the 350,000+ FPL managers who Triple-Captained him.

Now, they face an anxious wait to see if he can add to his current four-point tally, although Pep Guardiola’s post-match comments did sound positive.

“Erling has a kick and we will see. We will assess him in the next few days to see how severe it is. At half-time I spoke with the doctors to see and they said maybe at 3-0 we don’t need to take a risk and I agreed with the doctors. If the score was more tight maybe I wouldn’t do it. I think he’s not injured but tomorrow we will see. Hopefully he can play there on Wednesday. If he’s not ready or it’s a risk he’s not going to play.” – Pep Guardiola on Erling Haaland

Ruben Dias (£5.9m) was also hooked at half-time after picking up a yellow card, rather than anything injury-related, with Guardiola not taking any chances.

“Ruben [was substituted] because it was a yellow card. Of course, he was disappointed but unfortunately he got a yellow card – I don’t know why but it is what it is. With [Ollie] Watkins and [Leon] Bailey they have good runners in behind so we decide to not take risks with the score at 3-0.” – Pep Guardiola on Ruben Dias

PEP ON PENALTIES

Riyad Mahrez (£7.8m) surprisingly stepped up to convert Man City’s penalty on Sunday, despite Haaland being on the pitch. Guardiola has since said there will be a discussion on Monday about it.

After Jack Grealish (£6.8m) was fouled, Mahrez, Rodri (£5.6m) and Haaland were all in discussion with club captain Gundogan, with the Algerian eventually chosen.

Rodri confirmed after the game that he wanted to take the penalty, but stepped back when told to do so by Gundogan. However, Guardiola suggested that he wanted Haaland to take it.

“Normally Erling [Haaland] is the first taker. I wanted that but Riyad [Mahrez] always tries to do it, Rodri was involved. I don’t know what happened. Tomorrow we will speak with them. I like when people want to take penalties but always there is one that is the main one and that is Erling.” – Pep Guardiola

“It was clear that the captain decides and I have to accept that decision. I just asked because I was filled with confidence in that moment.” – Rodri

As for Mahrez, his penalty goal capped off a wonderful display, having earlier taken the corner which Rodri nodded in. He should have added a second, too, but blasted over from close range after some good work from substitute Julian Alvarez (£6.0m).

As a result, Mahrez has now returned more points (58) than any other Man City player from Gameweek 17 onwards, courtesy of four goals, five assists and nine bonus points in eight appearances.

His output was at odds with Kevin De Bruyne (£12.4m), who despite showing moments of real quality, ended the first part of Double Gameweek 23 10 points down on Mahrez.

PEP ROULETTE

Man City’s formation flummoxed almost everyone upon announcement on Sunday.

In the end, they lined up with a back three of Kyle Walker (£4.8m), Dias and Aymeric Laporte (£5.7m), with Rodri and Bernardo Silva (£6.8m) just ahead of them in defensive midfield and dropping deeper when needed to track runners.

That meant Manuel Akanji (£5.0m), Nathan Ake (£5.1m) and Rico Lewis (£3.9m) were all benched, with the former two appearing in the second half.

The sight of Dias and Laporte in the starting XI for the first time since October raises further question marks about the above’s minutes, with many FPL managers asking if they are even worth the hassle, given their limited upside to date.

Above: Man City’s average positions v Aston Villa

After the match, Guardiola singled Walker out for special praise, saying that he has seen an improvement in his recent performances in training.

“The way we’ve been in the training sessions over the last week or 10 days – we’ve improved a lot. Everyone is so focused. Kyle [Walker] is back with the way he’s behaving. The same with many players.” – Pep Guardiola

ANOTHER GOAL FOR WATKINS

We flagged up Ollie Watkins’ (£7.1m) record under Unai Emery last week, after his goal and assist against Leicester City in Double Gameweek 22.

At the Etihad, he continued that form with a second-half strike, taking his tally to four goals and three assists in eight appearances from Gameweek 15 onwards.

Once Villa’s match against Arsenal next weekend is out of the way, he could prove to be a useful asset, given that Villa have guaranteed fixtures in Gameweeks 25, 28 and 32.

Elsewhere, substitute Jhon Duran (£5.5m) hit the woodwork late on and looked a handful for the second match in a row, while Philippe Coutinho (£6.6m) also impressed from the bench and will be pushing for a start next week.

“Yes he has potential but he has to work as well, tactically, offensively and defensively. He has to adapt to his team-mates and our rhythm and as well every minute he is playing now on the pitch is very good for him, for the team but we have to be patient with him.” – Unai Emery on Jhon Duran

Tyrone Mings (£4.3m), meanwhile, was not included in Aston Villa’s matchday squad to face Man City due to a ‘small injury’, but Unai Emery said he was hopeful the centre-back will be available for selection soon.

“Hopefully he will be back. He had a small injury and didn’t train this week but hopefully for the next week he is going to get better and I am thinking maybe he will play on Saturday. If not, we have another centre-back like Calum Chambers and we have to believe in every player.” – Unai Emery on Tyrone Mings

Manchester City XI: Ederson; Walker, Dias (Akanji 45), Laporte; Rodri, Bernardo; Mahrez (Ake 85), De Bruyne, Gundogan, Grealish (Foden 69); Haaland (Alvarez 45)

Aston Villa XI: Martinez; Young (Coutinho 76), Konsa, Chambers, Digne (Duran 60); Ramsey (Cash 76(, Kamara, Douglas Luiz, Buendia (McGinn 60); Bailey (Moreno 60), Watkins

Just caught up with MOTD, saw bits of a few games this weekend but first time seeing a few things. Reviewing the Soucek handball it really was even more obvious than I remembered, can't believe some were claiming someone that was already balancing on their knees and low to the ground needed to put out his arm to stop a fall. Has a new rule regarding a third person from a team running towards a referee getting booked been implemented without PGMOL deciding to tell anyone? Two incidents of that this weekend and Neves saying they weren't told anything about it. They didn't show many angles on it but looked to me like Estupiñan's goal may have been onside? I couldn't see the offside anyway myself. Arsenal VAR call was dreadful too, I'm actually really surprised Arteta seemed as calm as he did discussing it, it seems like it's at a stage now where most managers expect incompetency with the use of the technology so they're just tired of arguing about it. What a weekend for officiating.

    Any PS5 gamers here?

Bored of Fifa and don’t like COD at all anymore. Also not overly into the cinematic storyline games like Ragnarok or Hogwarts. Any different kind of games you recommend?

      You sound like me tbh.

I've just bought Hogwarts Legacy, first time I've switched the PS5 on in about 6 months though so probably can't classify myself as someone ITK.

Good to know I am not alone. The big releases look great but I get so bored sleep walking through the story line and cut scenes every time you advance 200 metres. Would like to get into some more independent games or puzzle games but not sure where to start.

I dunno much about indies. Don't like em. I'd recommend the Ori games but they're not on ps5.
Oh wait I love This War of Mine. Play that.

You played Prey? From the guys who made Dishonored. Prey is real good.

If u like horror Resident Evil 2 Remake.

If u like pain I'd recommend Sekiro from the darksouls guys. The combat gets real addicting when u master it.

Need a little more info on what games you do like. Are you looking for something sort of like Hogwarts/GoW but with less cutscenes or more skippable story? Sounds like something more like an RPG with more freedom like Fallout where you can just explore at your own pace

      1. Count of Monte Hristo

I found Fallout and other post apocalyptic games depressing tbh. Something lighter and fun that makes you think so not just button bashing and not dialogue heavy.

God of War's combat isn't button mashing anymore though since the Reboot. It's real hard especially if u hike up the difficulty. I wish u like cinematic games. I'd recommend the Uncharted, Last of Us, God Of War, and Horizon series.

Hmm I'm kind of struggling to think of something that's less story/dialogue driven but lighter in tone, most RPGs (or games in general) I play tend to fall on the darker side 😛 . Was going to day Dark Souls / Elden Ring but those are pretty grim in terms of narrative and lore. Haven't played anything since 3 many years ago but I've heard the latest Assassin's Creed games are less story focused than they used to be, maybe one of those.

Also if you haven't played Astro's Playroom yet you should do that, it's free (think it might have been an auto download on PS5 actually) and it's the most fun platformer I've played in years despite effectively being a tech demo

2 FTs. Bruno - Maddison, Shaw - James lined up. Most sure about Maddison as a long-term move so was thinking of doing that first & maybe waiting another week for James. But I'm not keen on playing Shaw v Leicester, and not sure if I can count on Ake v Forest, so I'm tempted to put both moves through this week & have James v SOU. Would give:

    Raya
    Trippier Schär James*
    Saka Ødegaard Rashford Maddison*
    Haaland Kane Nketiah
    (Leno, Mitoma, Ake, Moreno)

There's not really anyone I'm interested in as a 1-2 week punt in that spot - happy to go straight to Maddison despite the tough fixtures. Can see goals for Leicester at OT & could nick something against Arsenal

      • 6 Years

I would probably delay the James move until 25. I like the Maddison move. Difficult fixtures on paper would not put me off him as he is a big game player

I'm set on the first move myself this week (still annoyed at myself for not doing it last week), I'm similarly likely benching Dalot (although I guess part of that depends on whether he plays against Barcelona or not) and to do that I'll need to use my second FT to bring in Kilman/Semedo to replace Cash so I think I'm doing just that. Just see how things go in the CL game for Chelsea and whether he plays or not first of course

      1. The Mentaculus
        • 4 Years

🙁 Yeah I thought you were going for that move last week. Oh well, luckily the bandwagon doesn't seem to be taking off just yet.

Kind of hoping for a big Dortmund win really to make me feel more secure about James' mins going forward. Think I'm still inclined to delay this move & take my chances with Ake/Shaw but will think on it. Thanks

Unfortunately I overthought things a bit and said I'd hold off (I'll blame Jon from Tifo's Twitter thread on Friday about how Spurs pressed and shifted the shape around against Man City). Seems like a lot still don't like the idea of him in the games against top 6 sides but again he's added to his good record in that

I don't think Shaw (or Dalot) are bad options against Leicester so holding off won't hurt I'm sure, I definitely expect ManUtd to concede given how often Leeds troubled them yesterday but he could well continue his good attacking form. Of course hard to know if James can stay fit too so might not be the worst idea to ensure he's available for the week you really need him

See how Everton look tonight but despite his poor form I think I'd go KDB. Looked a bit better yesterday and with Forest possibly missing McKenna and Boly and likely sitting in deep, I can see him putting in a lot of crosses from deep and possibly doing well from that

Morning folks, really bugged that I opted to bring in Ake even though I had funds for Mahrez. Anyhow, 1ft and 2.8m itb.

    Kepa
Trippier Shaw Ake White -- Patterson
Kdb Odegaard Martenelli Rashford -- Andreas
    Kane Haaland - Gnonto

Best moves over the next two gw's
    A: Mart + KDB + Andreas + Kane >> Saka + Salah + Mahrez + Darwin (-8)
    B: Mart + KDB + Shaw + Kane >> Saka + Salah + TAA + Darwin (-8)

    Morning all,

Tragic week so far on 43 (-4) however have a number of players to go. Really need Salah to return tonight.

Looking ahead, was planning on Botman > Tarkowski but thinking it might be better to roll and do the transfer next week as part of 2 or 3. Thoughts?

    Team this week:

    Kepa
    Martinez / Trippier / Lewis
    Salah / Mahrez / Rashford / Saka
    Kane / Haaland / Nketiah

    Ward / Andreas / Bueno / Botman

I’ve been watching too much Philomenia Cunk. I’m hearing Boltonian accents everywhere these days. Except when I watch mine crush, Alice Roberts, who has a Bristolian accent. As an Australian, I don’t have any accent at all.

Hi all, had a rough fpl weekend, over 50% red arrow out of the top 100k after benching shaw and going KDB over Mahrez while debating it all week.

Would appreciate thoughts on what i should do with this - have 2FT and 0.4mil in bank
    Kepa
    Trippier Shaw White (Schar*)
    Rashford KDB Saka
    Mitro Kane Haaland (c)
    Ward Martinelli, Andreas Patterson

    1) No hits plan:
week 24 : Patterson to Tarkowski and bench Schar*
    Week 25: 2FTS, Shaw + KDB > Salah + Dawson
Week 26 : Martinelli to Mitoma
    Week 27: Mitro to Toney

    2) Play whats in front and deal with issues (-4)
    Martinelli > Mitoma /March /Odegarrd
    KDB. > Mahrez / ?
    Mitro > Felix / Toney / Nketiah

I'm thinking correct the mistake and do KDB to Mahrez, unless you want Salah for the double

      1. FPL_trail_runner
        • 5 Years

I mean i dont think that would rule out salah

Could do KDB to Mahrez this week and Rashford - Salah for the dgw

Im just annoyed at myself regarding my weak Bruno to KDB despite having 2fts as i have alot of fires now

I had Martinelli + Mitro to Mahrez and Nketiah on the confirm page Thursday night and decided to wait until Friday to see city predicted teams -- and then chickened out despite Mahrez being predicted to start both.

Schar Paterson Mitro are also stinking it up. Crazy poor Mitro has been lately when Toney has nearly 40 points more.

I know it is two early but for GW25, would you prefer to have Salah (possibly captain) and Greenwood or Nunez & Gapko?
Greenwood has not been playing lately, mean only Salah count probably.

    1. Fulchester's New Centr…

If you are struggling to get 11 out surely Greenwood is a no go... and, don't know if you have noticed, but Salah has been quite crap for quite a while.

    2. FPL_trail_runner
      • 5 Years

      Its debatable

Im probably committed to Salah now (and down 10+ points and Mahrez cos of it) but it could a poor 3-6 points return based on how they are currently playing + rotation for CL.

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

I mean personally I don't like any of those options. If I had to pick I'd go Salah just for pens but that's about it, if it means it's basically one player v two then I'd go Nunez and someone other than Gakpo, he's looked pretty poor from what I've seen, hasn't really settled (although Liverpool's generally bad form isn't helping of course)

      1. Zack124
        • 3 Years

If I go for Salah would need to sell Shaw and put Greenwood on bench. Other option would allow me to keep Shaw plus Rashford & Trippier

Dusting myself off after another disappointing weekend. Benching Shaw and going KDB over Mahrez (after much agonising) was my undoing.

Haaland Triple Captainer here. Why did Rodri enter the penalty conversation for the first time ever? Just stick to the holding role. And Mahrez, please follow Pep's orders. And Gundo, please give the ball to the assigned taker.

A goal and an assist would have been a nice start. Oh well.
