We assess the key Fantasy Premier League (FPL) talking points from Nottingham Forest v Newcastle United in our first Scout Notes report of Blank Gameweek 28.

The numbers you see in this article are taken from our Premium Members Area, where you can access Opta player and team data from every single Premier League fixture.

We’ve currently got a seven-day free trial running, too, so you can try before you buy.

ISAK SHOWS HIS QUALITY

Alexander Isak (£6.6m) is starting to show why Newcastle forked out £60m to sign him, as his brace of goals at The City Ground gave the Magpies a fully deserved win.

In an electric display, the Sweden striker was a constant threat, scoring in each half, including an injury-time penalty which for a moment looked like Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) was going to take.

He almost turned provider, too, when substitute Elliot Anderson (£4.3m) saw his goal controversially ruled out. Isak ended the night with five shots in the box, two big chances and nine penalty box touches, all match-leading totals.

“Alexander Isak took our last penalty and scored it really well. Kieran Trippier is an incredible penalty taker but Alex is our designated taker and he took it really well.” – Eddie Howe

The young forward has been blighted by injuries in his opening season in England but has now scored three goals in his last two games, which has coincided with Eddie Howe shuffling his front three to include him alongside Allan Saint-Maximin (£6.1m) and Jacob Murphy (£4.1m).

In an eventful evening, Newcastle also hit the bar twice and missed a hatful of chances, in a performance that will increase interest in Isak, who is owned by just 2.2% of FPL managers ahead of Double Gameweek 29.

CLEAN SHEET WIPEOUT

Owners of Kieran Trippier and co were dealt an early blow in Blank Gameweek 28 when a Sven Botman (£4.5m) howler gifted Nott’m Forest an early lead against the run of play.

In truth, there wasn’t a lot wrong with Newcastle’s defensive display, as they allowed just five shots which carried a combined expected goals (xG) value of 0.38.

Still, they have now failed to keep a clean sheet in each of their last six matches and generally haven’t looked their usual selves at the back.

NEWCASTLE – LAST SIX MATCHES
Total (rank v other Premier League teams)
Goals conceded8 (12th=)
Clean sheets0 (18th=)
Big chances conceded13 (11th=)
Expected goals conceded (xGC)7.28 (8th)

ALMIRON, SCHAR + WILSON UPDATES

Miguel Almiron (£5.5m) is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a thigh injury in training with the club.

Eddie Howe revealed after the match he will be out for six weeks, potentially ruling him out until May.

“Miggy pulled a thigh muscle in training. Unfortunately, it’s quite a bad one. It’s going to be six weeks.” – Eddie Howe on Miguel Almiron

The Newcastle boss also offered updates on Fabian Schar (£5.0m), who has been left out of the Switzerland squad, plus Callum Wilson (£6.9m) and Saint-Maximin. The latter was replaced at half-time, with his hamstrings causing concern.

“Fabian’s been carrying lots of different things in the last few weeks. He’s been carrying a foot problem and also had concussion, so I think it’s just a chance for him to rest his body and go again.” – Eddie Howe on Fabian Schar

“Allan wasn’t quite right today, physically, I didn’t think. He’s been carrying a tight hamstring. I don’t think it’s a pull, it’s just a little bit of tightness. For me, it was obvious during that first half that he probably wouldn’t be able to carry on.” – Eddie Howe on Allan Saint-Maximin

“I didn’t want to expose Callum today, he hasn’t done a lot of training, so I decided to go with Elliot [Anderson] and he repaid me, he did really well. Hopefully, we’ll have Callum and Maxi [Saint-Maximin] fit and available after the international break.” – Eddie Howe on Callum Wilson

FOREST FINALLY LOSE AT HOME

Nott’m Forest failed to put some distance between themselves and the dreaded drop zone on Friday in a disappointing display. As a result, it’s now six league matches without a win, a period that has seen them score just five goals and concede 14.

Nonetheless, their home form has generally been excellent this season. Prior to tonight, they were unbeaten in nine Premier League fixtures at The City Ground, last losing to Fulham all the way back in Gameweek 8. Now, Double Gameweek 29 offers them an opportunity to get back on track, when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers before visiting Leeds United.

It was Emmanuel Dennis (£5.6m) on the scoresheet against Newcastle, although the quicker-than-expected return of Brennan Johnson (£5.7m) from injury means he is the forward to target, for those wishing to invest in Steve Cooper’s attack.

“We’re really frustrated to lose. It was a difficult game. The main talking points for me are how we didn’t manage ourselves around the two goals. The timing of the goals are moments in the game where you just have to see it out. The first goal was right at the end of the first half, and the second was right at the end of the second. For us to make those decisions in the build-up is something you will get punished for at this level. That’s where my immediate frustration is, and the players will be frustrated with that as well.” – Steve Cooper

New chip idea seeing as people are posting. VAR chip. Able to challenge a goal given against one of your players that you feel should have stood. I.e. March owners who missed out last week use the chip to over turn the decision. Only one allowed per season.

Early days but I'm still quite unsure of what dedender to bring in next week for Kilman. Moreno is probably the one that I'd be most tempted by but clearly there's a big concern over his minutes with Digne around, Estupiñan I guess is the safest choice. Probably going to move Ward on too but not too sure there either, Raya probably the most likely candidate but I'm tempted by Steele or Neto too

I'm not saying I think it's impossible that they pick up a clean sheet between the games or that an attacking return from someone like Shaw is out of the question, but those are pretty tough fixtures

        Sorry to jump in.
Why WC31? I Will have mine to use after 29 and yet to decide. Maybe 30 to erase the money in the bench but no major fixture swing apart going against Arsenal.
WC33 might be handy to retool after bgw32

31 they turn, Brighton tough fixtures & Blanks incoming etc. Would like to set up for BGW 32 and the upcoming doubles when they are confirmed.

I'd actually penicilled in Moreno - Shaw, although I am wondering about Shaw now too. Still seems like Emery thinks of Moreno as too attacking, or at least not as defensively solid as Digne, so I don't think he's nailed for the DGW really, not with those fixtures

      1. Nate(U)dog(ie)
        • 5 Years

Fair points, do you think Shaw does well in this week? I know he's been playing well but I'm just not very sure on ManUtd defensively lately

          • 4 Years

Nah I'm not convinced either. Newcastle seems a particularly bad game for Casemiro to miss, where I think they'll lose control of midfield. I'm open to other ideas but haven't settled on anyone yet. But then I am going to FH32 so I don't mind just getting him in place for EVE, DGW34 etc & just hoping for the best from BRE.

A best GW player captain chip:

If you activate this chip, only for a single gameweek, and your selected captain has highest points in your GW team you get quadruple captain points.

If it's not your captain your highest points player is auto captain and gets double points.

Too many chips already, too much spoon feeding & with Haaland at 40% in the Captain poll there are 4.5m dead teams.

Yeah. Let's automatically delete teams where the person hasn't logged in for a while...

What if they were taking a break or only log in every once in a while?

Not everyone takes the game as serious as others, absolutely dumb to punish them for it.

If you can't beat dead teams then you deserve to have a crap rank.

You cannot delete a dead team by algorithm. What happens if someone has ml where they have agreed not to make transfers? And dead teams should be easy to win. People copying same teams from YT-influencers is bigger problem and nothing can be done about it either.

Would you use BB if have

    Ward, Saka, Odegaard & White

This will be tricky decision for many.

Scenario 1 you use it but could get x2 points if BB after WC in 34
Scenario 2 you don’t use it and Arsenal do well and you 25-30 points on bench.

The ‘Seagull stole my chip’ chip.

This allows you to steal a chip from anyone in your mini league. One a season, don’t be greedy.

According to Fabrizio, Mount is already planning his exit from Chelsea this summer

Can’t blame him, when fit Potter has still hardly played him.

Chelsea don’t want to pay him the same as their other top earners.

I love Mason Mount but I think a fresh start would be best for everybody.

        Likely destinations for him?

No idea but it’s can only be one of the other top 6 clubs that would be able to afford him, be surprised if he went abroad. Liverpool probably need the midfield rebuild the most but I wouldn’t rule out Arsenal now they will have a bigger budget and need a bigger squad for Champions League.

Hindsight chip would be popular. Able to unlock those annoying decisions that went against you - don’t suffer any more as you play Trippier at home instead of the in-form Gabriel

The ‘Red Heat’ chip. You play this chip and the highest scoring team in your mini league is forced to swap points with you for that game week. Wonder is anyone will get the reference?

Which Arsenal assets are you keeping?

I’m with Zin, Mart and Saka, really struggling to choose tbh. That Leeds game sounds good so kinda afraid to get rid. Next fixtures also not looking that bad.

I have White and Saka, likely keeping both but if I end up WCing in GW30 or 31 I will probably get Martinelli and lose Saka. Martinelli seems in great form while I'm a bit unsure on Saka at the minute. Returned in 4 of his last 8 games with only 2 returns of more than 6pts

Saw some new chip suggestion, how about removing tc chip and make a chip like you can captain two players and the points will be doubled for those two players. No vc option though. Might be useful like this gw where we were torn between saka kane..Lot of punts also will be there for example we can captain one defender here.

Chip on Shoulder Chip. Ppl who've made an especially terrible transfer get to reverse it and claim retrospective points - two per season.

How about a catchy “all for one one for all chip”

Combined Bench Boost, Free Hit and Triple Captain all in the same chip in the same game week.

The ‘troll’ chip. You play this and get people banned from this site for a game week. One a season, but of course is everyone played theirs in consecutive weeks ….

For now my GW29 plan is using my FT's on Sanchez -> De Gea/Steele and Saka -> Fernandes/Gakpo

    Giving me

    Kepa - De Gea
    Trippier - Chilwell - Schär - Mings - Gabriel*
    Rashford - Mitoma - March - Fernandes - Odegaard*
    Toney - Haaland* - Kane*

Bench Boost with 4 singlers. Could take a hit for Trent of Shaw to have another doubler.

Thoughts? It's ofcourse still very early and a lot could change over the internationals.

The shoulder chip. When played, it diminishes the relative value an individual places on their self worth as defined by their FPL OR
