FPL General has joined our top team of Pro Pundits, Hall of Famers and contributors on a multi-year deal!

With many of our Gameweek 38 captaincy and transfer decisions likely to be determined by early team leaks, instead of focusing on the final round of matches, I’ll use this week’s piece to share my thoughts on some changes FPL could make to the game for the 2023/24 season.

I think we can all agree that this season won’t live long in the memory. Most engaged managers ended up with eight or nine of the same picks for the majority of the campaign and there wasn’t much need for ‘content creators’ to share their teams on Twitter after each deadline as they all looked the same anyway.

Erling Haaland (£12.4m) became auto-captain, the Arsenal and Brighton and Hove Albion guys performed extremely well at bargain prices, Marcus Rashford (£7.2m) rediscovered his best form at just £6.5m and Kieran Trippier (£6.1m) made a mockery of the Bonus Points System. These all contributed to a very ‘samey’ FPL campaign.

This summer would be a good time for a shake-up, in my opinion, following the last few interrupted seasons.

Competitive pricing is the most important job the game has - don’t think it needs much changing.

Moving the deadline to KO would be a terrible move in the wrong direction.

    1. Vinyl78LP
      • 15 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

Absolutely agree with deadline, millions of players have lives to lead without being chained to the game pre kick-off.

    2. Dunster
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 6 months ago

Agree - but it either needs to be kick off or moved to a deadline well before any possible leaks (say UK midnight previous day), to take out of the equation the leak scenario. Either we all base our picks on “during the week” assessment, or we all run our lives on the basis of being available and committed for a certain half hour slot

Most fantasy sports games in the US (where they orginated) allow moves up until the minute of the first game of the day/week. FPL should do the same.

No, but you'd imagine he'll be ready as it was just the illness that kept him out

“Rashy trained well the whole week but today he reported he is ill,’ the Dutchman told reporters. “We have to see how he recovers during the day and see tomorrow."

Yes the game needs to evolve as it did with the chips but definitely not by tweaking captaincy options and deadlines so that nerds can make last minute changes.

That means everyone making transfers after the squads are out and crashing down the website. There will be no price changes either cause everyone will hold on to the transfers.

So exactly like what happened with the current rules this year? And I think suggesting 11m people are going to wait is unrealistic.

I get that arguement, not saying it's fair. But they're already missing out on leaks and all that jazz anyway. What are the alternatives? Make the deadline 3 hours before the first kick off?

One of the changes they have to implement is the ‘bestball’ approach where your 11 highest scoring players are picked (subject to formation rules) regardless.

Would incentivise investing in a squad rather than the obligatory fodder and eliminate the completely unnecessary swings of luck from the bench the game doesn’t need.

The pricing of the Arsenal mids was ridiculous, especially Martinelli at £6m.

You should be able to roll as many free transfers as possible.
    Players should be priced higher.
Ownership % should be hidden until the league kicks off.
There should be 2 pts for winning penalties.

Is this just a list of the rules for FanTeam? It sounds like the game you would prefer to play based on this article.

I actually think it would make MORE identical teams.

It wont prevent 90% of teams having:
        Salah, TAA
        Haland
        Trippier
        Martineli, Odegard

Robert all day for me. Great left foot, free kicks and looking miserable, but better than Ginola, Ben Arfa and ASM in the French winger pecking order. Shearer would be there, but needed someone like Bellamy to do the running for him at that stage in his career.

Woodgate was probably injured. He's the best defender I've seen at Newcastle and was so good he could order Bramble around and seem like a decent defender. Such a shame that injuries stalled his career as Woodgate was very good.

        Haha yeah that was wild!

The free transfers after the WC was bad this year too, I'm not sure of the solution but it wasn't that - maybe 5FTs?

Winter WC, Covid & deaths do any weird implications, hopefully a 'normal' season next year.

    Hub recommends the following transfer:

    Haaland -> Kane
    Isak -> Jesus

    Thoughts?

An algorithm gave you an opinion and now you want another human opinion? Sounds fun.

      I think it's awful personally.

I buy the reasoning that haaland plays Brentford as preparation for the finals. Mentally, city will have more to play for than spurs I think

      Nice if Haaland doesn't start.
