I don't accept the view that TAA is a de facto premium.
Surely he is simply now an OoP midfielder who will get 3 extra points per clean sheet and therefore compares to those 8m-8.5m Mids

Since moving to his OOP midfield role he managed 1 goal and 7 assists in only 8 matches = Premium level.

Liverpool may go back to a more orthodox style and not invert Trent into the so-called box midfield.

They're in a transition and those tactics may have been temporary to plug some gaps last season.

As good as Trent is, it's assists and clean sheets rather than goals you're getting.

Agree. Most of those midfielders scored around the 200pts mark, Trent has achieved over that multiple times. He is in their league.

He has strong value as alternatives, but there are strong 6.5m alternatives in midfield too like Mbeumo and Mitoma.

There is a still a balancing act to be made. I don't think going cheap in defence and loading up on ~8.5m mids is the obvious way to get the most points, I think the alternative approaches stack up quite well.

It's just semantics. He's at a premium in his category. i.e. he is a premium defender.

You still have to pick 5 defenders and 5 mids, so it's not irrelevant that he is a defender - and 4.0m more than the minimum spend in that position. You have to take the points potential of the other available defenders into account.

  3. Piggs Boson

I agree that those midfielders are "premium-lites", but the defenders like Shaw, Gabriel etc you listed didn't even score 150pts, and struggle to average 4pts per game. They are far from premiums.

We have a real lack of big-hitting defenders atm, with Trippier the being only one last season, and also Trent post GW30.

    1. Deulofail
      • 9 Years
      2 years, 5 months ago

This is why I immediately drafted James and Chillwell, and stuck with them until last night. For me, they are the only two that feel like potential big-hitters.

Otherwise, people are settling for scraps as they are the best of a bad bunch, which makes them feel like good value in comparison. However, I think even Gabriel, the darling, at 5.0 is good-to-mediocre, as a CB would might get CSs and the odd goal (boring!).

So I've switched to a backline of Estupinan, Botman, Henry (Chelsea4.5er, Beyer) to try and get more from the attack.

Could see myself going back in for the Chelsea or Liverpool fullbacks, though

I don't go in for all this categorisation though (premium, ultra-premium, lower-mid-lite-premium, etc), given that everything relevant exists on an unpredictable continuum. It seems a bit too masturbatory.

Labels have no basis in reality, but they make communication much easier.

The problem in this case is the 'premium' labels are poorly defined and too subjective.

I currently have a 5.5m defender alongside Trent with Chilwell/James in mind. They have such a high ceiling that I want to stay flexible to them.

Hopefully pre-season sheds some light on how Poch intends to use them. I can see James playing a more defensive or inverted role, he's so versatile. But Chilwell is someone I'm expecting to be unleashed down the left. I just worry about his rotation.

        1. Deulofail
          • 9 Years

Jumping to Chilwell or James is a good reason to own a 5.5 defender if you don't own one yet, so long as the 5.5 def isn't poor value. Maybe Shaw is good for that.

I would say, though, that if you already have one of James/Chilwell at the start, then having another 5.5 with the hope that you can switch to the other of James/Chilwell seems restrictive. You might as well start with both James & Chilwell, neither, or just one (and no other 5.5.... unless you actually do think your team is best with that other 5.5m).

No idea if I got my point across there 😀

Put him in my team this morning, lots of time still to change the 4.5 slots!

              Right - mine's one 5.0, 3x 4.5 and a 4.0

super-cheap but get 3 good starters per GW.

Regarding Spuds -- I'd need to see something. Posty's supposed to be a 'score one more than you' sort, which is not what you want for your cheap defenders.

I don't see the logic in that.

Start him, he says he's happy to play if priced out (£35m+) of a move.

        Or get £25m for him.

But don't pay him for almost a year with 5 keepers in the squad to not play.

I may be wrong but i suspect he'll play premier league football. Without a move it is a risk going into gw1.

It’s not good to buy a goalkeeper on the understanding he’ll be first choice and then leave him on the bench for a year. If you’ve two keepers of similar quality you play the one who is going to be with you next season rather than the one that refused a new contract. Flekken is a Dutch international goalkeeper.
Brentford tend to buy early (tick) and then sell late so it could be it drags on until nearer the deadline though Inter might be in the market for a new keeper soon.

Morning lads, been on this draft for a week now - thoughts?

Think players like Haaland, Son and Salah in particular will benefit from the offside rule change.
Also think Andreas might be on pens after the numerous Mitrovic misses last season:

    Pickford
    Trent | Gabriel* | Estupinan
    Salah | Son | Saka | Enciso | Andreas
    Haaland | Ferguson

    Areola | Baldock | Beyer | Woodrow

Obviously no bench could be an issue down the line.

*Debating if Zinchenko could be a more shrewd pick than Gabriel?

    Thoughts?

Watkins is getting few mentions but Isak is going seriously under the radar at £7.5m

He'll smash it up this season and he's on penalties when Wilson isn't on the potch... and he's the likely starter too.

If your second striker is around £6m, who do you downgrade to bring him in?

        So currently on Jesus.

Jesus juice? Not sure how that's happened. 😉

Im seeing Villa as a good team who could be hard to score a few against, different beast under Emery
Currently on Nkunko at 7.5 so should be easy to change for me if Chelsea do a Chelsea

That's true too but i can see Isak scoring in the opening 3 fixtures!

A brace in the first, one at Manchester City as they often concede and start a bit slower and another at home to Liverpool too

Can't say I see Newcastle thumping Villa myself. In their last 14 games they only conceded 8 goals, never conceding more than once in a game in that run (and that included games v Brighton, Spurs, ManUtd, Newcastle, Brentford, Fulham and Liverpool)

That's fair but I've just got an opening day vibe that Newcastle win on Saturday evening at St James' Park.

                2-1 is perfectly possible.

You're right, Villa did Newcastle 3 nil with a Watkins hattrick or brace i think at home before his strong run ended.

Villa were the most improved team I saw last season under Emery. Newcastle beat them easily at SJP, helped a lot by Villa trying to play from the back. In the return match at Villa, Emery exploited Burn's weaknesses at left back and played through Newcastle better than anyone else I saw last season.

Isak started 4 games on the left last season with Wilson playing through the middle, which was GW35-37.

It coincided with injuries in midfield and ASM just coming back from injury meaning Joelinton dropped deeper. Wilson's form off the bench and starting midweek games against West Ham and Everton meant that Howe was felt he could play both Isak and Wilson in the starting lineup for those 4 games.

I had Isak when he was first choice from GW28. I got it wrong for those 4 games though as I thought Howe would have more faith in starting someone else on the left. Will see what Howe does this season!

One of the benefits of my early WC plan is it coincides with NEW fixture swing. Will see what's going on with Wilson/Isak but I definitely have my eye on him/them

    4. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years

Few too many question marks around him for me. As you say he's only on penalties if Wilson isn't playing, Wilson playing may mean he's shifted out left or even left out if Howe wants to start properly getting Gordon settled or use ASM (if he stays), Champions League starting a few days after GW5 (which is right after IB) so rotation may begin very early, etc. I also don't love the fixtures, Villa had an excellent defensive record under Emery, they have a poor record v City, Liverpool and Brighton may be OK fixtures for attackers but I think there are better picks

Trying to decide which is stronger which ultimately determines a 442 or 352!

    A) Pau Torres, Kane, Rashford, Enciso

    B) Son, Jesus, Bruno, Mitoma

How unreasonable will Levy be this time?

Can Kane just join Manchester United for free next season?

Harry Kane’s transfer saga has taken a fresh twist as it has been reported that Bayern Munich chiefs jetted to London on Thursday night to hold talks with Tottenham’s Daniel Levy. The Bundesliga outfit are adamant that the striker is keen to join their side, though it remains to be seen whether they leave England without a new No 9.

If he was going to sign a new contract he’d have done it by now. I can’t see Spurs letting him go for free so if no other club is coming in for him it looks inevitable. Could easily drag on for a bit though

Any suggestion or critique? What to do with funds? 1.5m in bank, but could easily be 2m with a downgrade of Stones or James. Gone 4.5m for 4th & 5th DEF as cover for Foden plus having non-playing 3rd FWD.

    Ramsdale, (Forster);
    Stones, James, Epsu, (Botman, Henry);
    Rashford, Saka, Foden, Mbeumo, Mitoma;
    Haaland, Jesus, (Osula).

Thinking maybe put the 1.5m to make a playing 3rd FWD, or to upgrade a 6.5m MID to a 8/8.5m MID?
