I went for Odegaard instead of Saka, risky I know. Should I reverse the decision or stick and see how the next few weeks play out?

I did the same and holding. Odegaard could have had at least an assist. They’ll go in waves. Could be Ode’s week next.

Odegaard will adjust his play to the team so will be quieter whilst they adjust to the new players. Saka does no such thing.

Martinelli is quieter without a drifting leftwards striker, aka Jesus.

Now is the time for Saka, soon it will be Martinelli, then Odegaard for the rest of the season

Not sure why I have trent in my team. Last minute panic cover for stones. Massive differential although I can't see him doing much with all those attacking players.

I had Trent in my draft until the last few days as I wanted to spread the funds but I think he is still a nice pick to have and a differential for sure.

I'll keep half an eye on fpl stats and keep for now.

He's very highly owned so will presumably take a lot of sales for him to drop?

If he looks close to dropping after next weekend's fixtures, I might switch to Chilwell if Chelsea look decent.

    Bottomed, so will try again.

Does anyone know how reliable FPL Statistics is at the start of the season? I'm wondering when Gabriel is likely to drop in price. He's on -6.0 at the moment. Does this sound about right if 55K of his 2.7 million owners have transferred him out so far? I was expecting him to be a lot closer to the drop.

Nice, I’ve considered it a few times but can’t drag myself away from the summer tinkering! How was the season away?

I had a lot going on in my non-FPL life this year and that’s helped me take the game less seriously. Coincidentally that actually helped me get my best rank last season, while also allowing me to care about it less.

      Good on you!

It was good, I unfollowed all ‘content’ which I used to spend/waste hours on so I just enjoyed the football but watched way less

Even my friends who are casual have the same team as the template now so don’t see the point in spending much time on it

Yeah, fair point. I’ve never followed content on social media. I try to control what I consume, so this site and its podcasts and Always Cheating - because it’s a nice listen with some good people, more than anything.

Frustrating to see people start the season with a similar team to you when they know nothing about football or FPL but that’s the way with the spoon feeding now. Just try to make the game fun for ourselves!

I will never not find it funny when people question and judge managers like Guardiola, Klopp, and Arteta for their decisions, like rotating players, changing line-ups, tactics, and making different substitutions than an armchair football coach would do. You should not get angry every single week because of that. There are plenty of reasons why they are where they are, managing three of the best teams in the league, and we are just goddamn FPL managers. Each one of them has more football knowledge than all of us combined. They are preparing for every game to win and doing what they think is best for their squad in the long term. Let it go folks, as you will never understand them completely, and there's no need to.

If this is related to the Gabriel benching, no one is really questioning Arteta's judgement..it's about the info getting leaked 5 mins before the deadline, some benefiting from it while others we're able to.

I hate leaks as well, and I've owned Saliba since July. When he was on for a 12-pointer, I just thought how much better it would be without Twitter, X, Reddit, and the FPL content creators who shared the rumours. Many of the "new owners" probably didn't even look at him before the news broke, so they would be rewarded for being reactive.

            • 10 Years

Okay, I see what the real problem here is. Do you want to hear that I don't think Arteta is on their level yet? Because I don't, and I never said it. He needs a lot of seasons to come even close to what they've done in the past. But I also wasn't even comparing their knowledge, was I? I said each one of them knows more about everything football-related than the entire FFS Community combined. And I genuinely think that's true. All three have been involved in football for at least 30 years (Arteta 30, Guardiola 42, and Klopp 51) in different roles.

My point was that these three are managing sides that are able to rotate even their best players if they want to, and they know exactly what they are doing. FFS members are just pissed off because their players get benched occasionally or subbed off without even trying to understand the bigger picture. I really regret that I didn't throw in more names of other managers, because you didn't even understand what I wanted to say, and I really should have backed up my basic idea. FPL-wise speaking, these three will make the game we're playing a little bit more unpredictable this season, and we all want to have a few of their picks. They will make a lot of decisions that will frustrate this community in the near future. Isn't that true? Tell me, how am I wrong? Guardiola has done it numerous times in the past, Klopp did it, and Arteta will do it more often than you can expect.

The point of this post wasn't comparing them as managers or their knowledge and experiences, but the inability of some people on here to understand that it's not about their fantasy team but real life and performance on the pitch. They are free to try new things and tactics. They don't have to start your favourite player. They can do whatever they want.

          Er, who invented "Gegenpressing"?

At least there's a conversation going on in this thread about tactics, however heated. I pretty much threw in the towel last night over fighting with trolls who are utterly wilfully ignorant about tactics and have a go if you're thinking ranges beyond 'Manager X, you're an a-hole for not starting my player' 🙄
Personally, I'm a connoisseur of tactics and lap up loads of YouTube videos on the art. I'll cease giving my views on Pep, Arteta, Klopp et al because people here just don't want to know, but I'll just repeat that I appreciate this thread and wish there were more discussions with substance on this forum.

As Klopp said himself, the origins come from England. It was used by teams in England as far back as the 1960s and was widely popular in the 1980s.

Alright, I was using shorthand. He reintroduced it to the PL in a distinctive fashion that forced most managers including Pep to adapt their tactics.

        2. Arteta
          • 10 Years

Klopp is included for his decisions and the rotation risk a lot of players carry because of what he is as a manager and what they are as a team. His system and ideas are either creating or taking away FPL options.

        3. Arteta
          • 10 Years
          2 years, 4 months ago

It was supposed to be an FPL-related post, but it went completely another way. Nunez/Diaz/Jota/Gakpo dilemma is quite big, and we'll never hear the end of it unless there are some serious injuries. Another question is whether Robertson's minutes will be at risk because of Tsimikas, or is he still worth picking as an alternative (early sub, locking in a clean sheet, etc.)? Is Szoboszlai going to be taking most of TAA's set pieces, which is reducing his appeal? Could Van Dijk be the one to own for the season? He's capable of getting attacking returns as well as bonus points.

I guess a lot of people here only see Salah and Trent as options and don't even bother thinking outside the box.

Arsenal fan here but sounds like u think we can't criticise arteta at all

Going by the logic used here nobody shd have ever criticised emery when he was in charge with his diabolical tactics.

I'm really skeptical of the tweaks being made. Pushing party in midfield with rice was too defensive yesterday and reminded me of the early artetas overly defensive plays. Also replacing xhaka with havertz is a huge downgrade imo but happy to be proven wrong. Can't compare arteta with pep or klopp yet

      1. Arteta

Every Arsenal fan has criticized Arteta for something in the last three years. He's done a lot of things wrong, and he will make plenty of mistakes in the future. Everyone knows that. He has to try new things with new players. Otherwise, there was no point in buying them. Any reasonable fan would give them time and stay patient.

      2. Arteta
        • 10 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

Yesterday's performance wasn't the best, but that diabolical tactic was working fine to keep a clean sheet for 81 minutes. If Gabriel started and was subbed off in the 80th minute, his owners would act like geniuses. Or if he came on as a sub and scored in the 94th minute. Only now do they care when things don't go their way. You can't win the argument, so it's pointless to even try.

I dont really care about Gabriel I'm talking about tactics in general. Diabolical was used for Emerys defence and emery was used to argue about ur point of not being able to criticize managers cuz they know more than us

To me (and looking at the heat maps) it just looked like Arteta thought he would copy Pep's tactics by naming someone in defence but essentially pushing them into midfield (Partey) and so basically playing with a back 3. Arsenal's back four of White, Saliba, Gabriel and Zinchenko faired pretty well last season so I'm not sure why he'd want to unsettle things, but as above, he obviously knows more than I do

They share the same tought. They knows Not Forest and other small teams usually play with back 5.

So they want more attacker to attack opponent. Thats why Arteta copying Pep to just use 3 CB.

The problem is he bought Rice and not so functional striker like Harvertz and throw them to mids.

If u want a CDM, buy CDM with pure CDM quality.

If u want no 8 and attacker, buy proper 8. Not CDM who can play no 8 occasionally. Thats likit the team's fluidity and movement.

            Dont waste the money.

Okay, I'll break my self-imposed silence just this once! I've been monitoring Arteta's tactical evolution over time. Initially he was blatantly trying to do a mini-Pep, but in recent times he's established a sense of his own ideas. Whilst his tactics resemble Pep's in many ways, he's now his own man.
just one example - while the general formation is similar, and this weekend Partey's movement on the right yesterday did resemble Rico Lewis' on the left on Friday, one difference is that at City the players largely stay within their allotted roles, whereas Arsenal are more interesting with players interchanging a lot.

For the majority of FPL players who don't care about any of that, one key takeaway is that whilst we've got used to Peptation, this season we will see 'Artation', including at the back (the real issue re Gabriel). Better get used to seeing your favourite Arsenal assets benched like your City players.

The difference is Howe use what they have but Arteta bought the two players.

When we buy, make sure we buy the right profile so the team can improve.

Small sample size but game vs Not Forest I cant see Harvertz and Rice very dangerous.

Rice movement is a 'CdM' movement. Not a 8 or 10 like Odegaard. Arteta should buy someone like Odegard or just promote someone from the bench.

Havertz and Rice are on 5-year contracts, and by the time 2028 comes, we'll see whether they were ever worth £170 million or not. I wouldn't stress after their first month at the club.

Of course we can question their decisions. They are not infallible and they make mistakes. It took years of "the Great" Pep making tactical mistakes in the Champions League before City finally won it last year. Take the Chelsea final when he decided to play no defensive midfielder and the team had no cohesion. Can we not question that?!

    How are we doing everyone?

Opening weekend is always a bit mad. It feels like the first bend of a particularly chaotic Grand Prix and it takes a little while for us to make sense of where everyone stands.

I think I’m broadly happy with how it’s gone so far, most templatey picks have come off (Brighton triple up all returning) while others have not (Pickford and Gabriel). Salah, Rash, Chilwell and Mbeumo to go.

Anyone else just hoping to take a step back, watch the first two gameweeks unfold and then decide on their next move?

FPLstats / Gabriel might force our hand to do differently!

Ok start but I guess everybody had a solid start with the highly owned assets coming off with returns, pickford 2 pointer could be costly with many going for johnstone/onana. Foden blank was also not good so hoping for a mbuemo return today which is needed. Plan was to sit back and watch the 2 first gameweeks unfold but getting that itchy triggerfinger now thinking I made a mistake with foden

Fair but I’d give Foden a few weeks. He’s a streaky player so he could blow up at any time. I want to give most of my players at least 2-3 games before taking a judgement, unless they’re injured or dropped

I was thinking the same about Foden but this makes a lot of sense. I learnt from last year to leap on the form players (Almiron springs to mind) but no-one seems so essential yet that it’s worth getting rid of a quality player like Foden. Contemplating him for Diaz/Jota but may hold on

Agree with Pascal here. I don't own Foden, but if I did, I'd want to keep him. He's a supreme talent, and as long as he's getting minutes, he'll reward his owners sooner rather than later. If I'd known he was going to start, I would have had him over Martinelli.

The opening corner of an F1 race is a good analogy. I just want to get through GW1 without having a car crash, and emerging slightly ahead of mid-pack. I set up my team with GW1,3 and 4 in mind, plan to BB GW3 and WC after GW4 (unless I find it's not required), so GW2 is likely going to be a red arrow for me, but I can tolerate that.

I'm a Stones and Gabriel owner, with Chilwell coming off the bench for the former. I'll bench Gab next week, and currently considering whether to sell Stones or stick with him for one more week.

I don't feel there have been any standout performers this week who I want to get in immediately. Diaby has potential, Bowen might be worth considering from GW10, Newcastle have a few interesting assets, but fixtures need to improve. So I don't feel any need to make changes other than shipping the potential non-playing defenders.

Currently on 60 with Rashford, Chilwell and Wissa to play.

Nice one, sounds like you’re well set other than that misfortune at CB, but you’ve got ways out of that.

Interesting ploy with your BB. I’m in a mini league where the early leader played his with Johnstone, Guehi and Watkins, so that came off for him.

Glad you like the Grand Prix analogy - perhaps it can become a part of the FPL lexicon like the peloton analogies and so on!

          • 14 Years

In every previous season I've wasted the BB. I've always played it late, like in a DGW, but by that time, my bench is weak, and you have no control over who their opponents are. Targeting GW3, it means I have two weeks to replace any non-players, can afford a strong bench, and I know exactly who everyone's going to be playing. Then I get to downgrade my bench with my WC a week later.

Good luck with your opening weeks. Appreciate your comments and the Pollock (which painting?).

Agree with this sentiment. I'm on 55 with Rashford, B.Fernandes and Shaw to come. The average is only 49 so a lot of people are probably in the same boat, Gabriel messed up a fair few teams.
I'll wait and see how things pan out before I make any decisions. Don't want to make a panic move with Gabriel after GW1 and then regret it later.

Yeah. The penalties are a bonus. Still he was a punt, unsure what to get from him or gametime with a few attacking Brighton players including Welbeck and Evan. Boiled down to nothing great at 5.5m mids and less at 4.5m forwards so 5.5m forward and Nakamba looked a better call, for now anyways.

I had to make a choice this season. I have payed he game since inception and of all the improvements such as Content, stats, EO and general data has flooded the market place.
When I first started playing it was fairly simple to gather knowledge and get a fair understanding of the game. TBH everyone was in the same boat and had far less to deal with when making decisions. The eye test was everything, there was less rotation and a simple fixture ticker was enough to compete. Those were the days of "engaged managers" and it has slowly developed into "addicted managers" and copycats.
My first introduction to content was this site. You can tell by my engaged years tag; others have been here for far longer.
This forum was my first taste of advice, followed by their weekly pod, where price points, international interruptions, and a few "expert" sides were advertised. Since then, there has been a "snowball effect" that has resulted in listening to deadline streams and getting a march on opposition. Andy, Mark, Az and others were there to offer advice; now the noise has created insecurity with live information, algorithms XG and team reveals influencing decision making. I missed the old days TBH, making little spreadsheets attempting to get an edge. I have struggled more and more to enjoy the game, often interfering with a normal life.
I have always been a hit taker, because I would base it on a 5 week stretch. I was a better and more relaxed player then.
I am returning to my "old faults" and taking the "hit route"; more because I enjoy it; especially at the end of the season when I have had a more valuable side and early chip use took the anxiety away. It may not be right but I have never failed to improve my rank in the latter part of the season. It is a game of stud poker. Luck plays a massive part and you have to have decent hand to do well.
Go back to the old ways is my advice. Stop listening to boring repetitive content and play it your way.
    SOORY FOR THEDIATRIBE.

For me, hobbies are about having fun week in, week out. They are not about comparing your experiences with others as judging happiness. Being wrapped up in concerns about OR and following a template sometimes detracts from the fun for me.

My best memories from FPL are the punts that worked or even smiling about the ones that didn't (triple captain Andy Carroll!). Looking at a series of numbers of where I finished compared to others brings me limited joy. Others will be different. Maybe not having a great OR history or concentrating on ML cups at the expense of OR means I'm less bothered.

Play FPL for fun and play it any way you want to get maximum enjoyment.

Each individual has their own method of playing and it is their call alone both in how they play and what they get out of the game.

I will say this though, you tend to hear a lot more from people who have had a good points week than those that have not. Doing well = happiness and doing badly = sadness for most whichever way you dress it up.

I hear what you say and it rings true. I do believe state of mind though state of mind adds to the sadness/happiness process; or at least amplifies those feelings.

I don't think we're getting the full story re Gabriel. That wasn't just tactical, he put Tomiyasu on when Timber was injured not Gabriel. Something's happened behind the scenes I reckon

Ben White could have moved to full back couldn't he? Something about the way it was all leaked fits more with an incident occurring to me than Arteta's tactics coming out well in advance

Wrong. He didn't consider Forest a threat, and wanted to play one CB in possession.

I guess we'll see next week. If White's still at CB and Tomi comes in for Timber then I'm struggling to see how there's not something in what I'm saying. I'm a Gabriel owner FWIW I just don't get the logic in breaking up the spine of your team but these managers these days are a different breed overthinking and trying to reinvent the wheel.

I mostly agree with this. Not that he didn't consider Forest a threat, but rather it's one of the 'easier' matches on paper, so a time to try something a bit different. Partey's natural inclination is to squeeze into midfield, and from what I saw, I don't think the tactic worked particularly well. If he'd moved between CB and the double pivot, that may have been more natural. But I hope Arteta doesn't try this one again, as we will be caught out. I don't want White watching Partey to see what position he needs to be in, and I don't want Partey having to constantly think whether he drops to right back or sits next to Rice. For the weaker opposition, it's just unnecessary, and for the stronger opposition, it'll lead to errors.

Tbf Arteta said he thought it worked well and Partey was constantly the extra man and grew into the position stepping forwards.

Agree, seems like Gabriel might be rotated out for the easier games and brought back in for the tougher ones. Which would make him fantasy kryptonite.

Tomiyasu was the completely logical substitute for Timber. I've wasted too much time explaining Arteta's defensive tactics to people who just don't want to understand. There's absolutely no conspiracy here. That's all I'll say.

Its funny how all this talk about Newcastle's tough start and not choosing Botman or Trippier or whoever ignored the fact they were pretty much the best defence last season anyway, its not like they got steamrollered by anyone really. I'm starting to think 4.5 Botman is basically set and forget material almost.

I like Udogie as a differential, but we´ll see today how good he really is.
Henry from Brentford is also an option with good fixtures coming up.
Colwill (CHE) is another option - not very attacking, but Chelsea has great fixtures.
Tarkowski (EVE) is also an option, but i´m not sure about Everton...they haven´t been that bad yesterday, but they were very unlucky.

As a Gabriel and Pickford owner I'm not off to a great start either but one game is not long enough to access the strength of your squad. My differentials could easily start turning my season around as soon as today (Salah, Wissa, Chukwuemeka)
