The 2023/24 UEFA Champions League (UCL) begins on Tuesday – and so does the competition’s official Fantasy game.

We’ll have plenty of UCL Fantasy coverage in preparation for the big kick-off, plus regular articles throughout the season.

If you’re new to the game or need reminding of the rules, check out our ‘how to play’ guide below.

SIGN UP TO PLAY UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FANTASY HERE

Following a look at top goalkeeping, midfield and forward talents, our preview articles continue by picking out the best Champions League Fantasy defenders.

With a squad of 15 players and substitutions possible between the evenings of a Matchday, having forwards from both halves of the group draw is a great way to maximise points. This way, you know that there’ll be options on each day.

Here’s a guide to who’s who.

GROUPS E-H

The best defenders for UEFA Champions League Fantasy 2023/24

Joao Cancelo (€6.0m)/Jules Kounde (€5.0m) – Barcelona

Over the years, Cancelo has established himself as one of the world’s best right-backs for top teams like Manchester City and Juventus. But a falling out with Pep Guardiola resulted in him moving mid-season to Bayern Munich on loan.

Following that, late in the summer, he finally secured a loan move to Spanish giants Barcelona. Given he is still a great attacking asset, Cancelo could quickly establish himself as their main right-back.

He has already scored for the Blaugrana and, at 25% ownership, could be a great shout for the group stages.

Team-mate Jules Kounde is another great pick, having cemented himself at centre-back in the absence of Ronald Araujo (€5.5m).

He is great at ball recoveries and adept at getting the occasional goal from set-pieces. Ideally, you’d have at least one – if not both – of these for Matchday 1.

Ruben Dias (€5.5m)/Manuel Akanji (€5.0m) – Manchester City

Current holders Man City are again in a very favourable group, this time with Crvena Zvezda, RB Leipzig and Young Boys. Given their current form, I expect not just a load of goals but a decent number of clean sheets, so owning one of their defenders could be a source of consistent points throughout the Champions League group stages.

I have picked out Dias and Akanji as their most nailed-on centre-back at the moment. Both are great at ball recoveries and these get rewarded in UCL Fantasy. For budget reasons, I slightly favour Akanji over Dias but you can’t really go wrong with either.

Man City start off at home to the Serbian champions in Matchday 1.

David Raum (€4.5m)/Benjamin Henrichs (€4.5m) – RB Leipzig

Leipzig have started the new season strongly by convincingly beating Bayern in the German Super Cup, before delivering 13 goals and two clean sheets from four Bundesliga matches. I expect this form to continue in Europe.

Both Raum and Henrichs have been great in the opening games, combining for two goals and three assists. These attack-minded defenders are always looking to get forward whenever possible.

Currently, they’re owned by less than 5% of UCL Fantasy managers but could become a good source of points when Leipzig begin against Young Boys.

However, a word of caution on Raum. He was taken off injured in the last match and is touch-and-go. Their line-up will be revealed pre-deadline, so look out for it and make a decision accordingly.

GROUPS A-D

The best UCL Fantasy players for Matchday 11

Federico Dimarco (€5.5m)/Denzel Dumfries (€5.5m) – Inter Milan

The Inter Milan wing-backs continue to make a name for themselves in European football for their performances over the last couple of seasons.

Dimarco and Dumfries were one of the main reasons Inter reached June’s Champions League final and both defenders have gone up another level to start this campaign.

Looking closer, Dimarco has set up three goals and is ahead for expected assists (xA), whilst Dumfries is on one goal and two assists. Essentially being a right-winger when Inter attack, the latter has more expected goals (xG). Either way, both are strong options.

One thing to note in terms of UCL Fantasy is that Dimarco beat Dumfries 32-19 when it came to ball recoveries in last season’s competition.

Nicolas Otamendi (€5.0m)/Antonio Silva (€5.0m) – Benfica

Last time, Benfica were one of the surprise teams when topping Group H ahead of Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus. They reached the quarter-finals before losing to Inter.

Their 2023/24 domestic duties have begun with four wins from five, including two clean sheets. Ball recovery monster Otamendi is a mainstay in their defensive line-up, having made 71 of these in last season’s UCL Fantasy. One of the highest, I expect him to do the same again.

Another player to consider is Antonio Silva, who shares the same price and 7% ownership. His 61 ball recoveries weren’t too far behind.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo (€5.5m) – Napoli

Finally, Napoli’s captain has been a revelation throughout the last few years. Not just for keeping clean sheets but also when bombing forward to contribute goals and assists.

In my opinion, Di Lorenzo is at least €0.5m lower than what he should be, which is great news for us UCL Fantasy managers. He should certainly be under consideration for a defensive slot at just €5.5m.

The right-back was one of the highest-scoring defenders last time, thanks to two goals, two assists, four clean sheets and 61 ball recoveries. Furthermore, he is already on three goal involvements from just four Serie A outings.

Apart from the pair of Real Madrid meetings, Di Lorenzo is a great defender for Champions League Fantasy and should provide great long-term value.

Doku or Rodri for Fantasy CL? Thinking punt on Doku sounds nice.
    Also, Walker over the CBs?

Doku for me. Not bothering with defenders in the end as I think there might be substantial rotation and I don't care to venture a guess at that... plus I think they'll concede at RBL MD2 anyway

What’s with all the hand-wringing about getting Alvarez in from many content creators? I could understand if other options were performing anywhere near but we’re talking about keeping trash United and Chelsea players in his spot.

I don't follow them are they really saying not to get him? He's the best pick in the game. Legit no brainer

I have Alvarez but his points have been very lucky which is fine as luck plays a big part off this game. His last 2 assists are the epitome of how he is getting points. Before the last 2 GWs he wasn't pulling up trees.

      1. Cok3y5murf

His second assist was good, but the first one was just random luck. The best City attacker last game not named Haaland was Doku. Alvarez didn't do anything until that free kick. There will be a lot of variance outside Haaland, so I wouldn't be surprised if Foden hauled next game and Alvarez blanked

His vital business end role, nailedness and set pieces in the world's best attacking team will ensure he gets "lucky" a lot. But if we weren't discussing a world class striker you'd have more of a point. He'll keep getting lucky but he'll also have games where he's pure class and dominant

Exactly. That price is why I said he's the best pick in the game. I'd have him for 9m in a heartbeat

Don't worry darling, I am not telling you to get rid of your player. You think he is a good pick so keep him. I am simply stating a counter valid view point. I don't think he has been as good as Alvarez obsessed tunnel visioned players like you think he has been.

    3. The Mentaculus

Don't know about CCs but I still have some reservations. Massively overperforming his xA - and yes I know that's what happens with the finishers City have, but he's not necessarily creating more chances than Doku/Silva/Rodri etc. No shots in the last game except the FK.

Also I got the impression that when they played a kind of double pivot with Rodri & Kovacic, Alvarez was staying really close to Haaland (Fulham especially). But against WHU that wasn't really the case; it was more like the classic twin 8s where Silva was just as advanced as Alavarez.

So I don't know, he is a good option for the price and all, but I don't think he's essential. I think he's basically a reverse OOP, slightly-more-nailed Bernardo in terms of FPL expectations (if not skillset exactly) - which is fine for now, but I still think someone like Hojlund, Darwin, even Callum Wilson could go on more explosive runs

You're not wrong that his explosive potential isn't that high. But he's 6.9m and is a fairly nailed attacker for the best team in the league. Add on the fact he's a clinical finisher and it's a no brainer imo until his place is seriously threatened.

He's my only route to Alvarez (and part of why I haven't gotten Alvarez so far), so I'll have to be harsh and move him and Henry on, keeping Mbeumo only from Brentford

It's very tough trying to figure out how (and how regularly) he'll be used, especially as Grealish's injury was of course a big part of why he got a start. He looked excellent though. You think City can't get any better, then Pep buys a winger like him who loves to run at defenders at pace and has someone as fast as Haaland and Alvarez to keep up with him on the break, much like in the years of Sane, Sterling and Aguero

    2. ZeBestee
      • 11 Years

Doku is a star in the making. You could see he is very direct, and can score goals as well. He is what Grealish isn't in terms of goals. Against open teams, he is going to get braces that kid.

Grealish is still a competition for him though, and may rotate but we know Pep is ruthless, he will play the better player there regardless of the name.

Yeah the concern is that when City are up against Brighton, Arsenal etc he goes full-on control freak mode again with Grealish & Silva in the wide roles. I've got Doku for UCL fantasy but not too sure about FPL

I know this was a bad game week for a lot of engaged managers but I'm now ranked at 3.1m which is my worst start for several years.

Anyone else struggling to get a grip on this season? I know I am. There seem to be a lot of reactionary narratives at play and I'm not sure whether I trust any of them.

    1) Chilwell, Foden, Maddison, Son, and now Salah + double Newcastle defence (despite one CS) have all been deemed 'essential'. The first four probably wouldn't feature on any WC drafts now. Given Mudryk's ropey performance, I suspect Chilwell comes straight back in for Chelsea at LW, and if he bangs in a goal vs Villa, will be straight back to being essential as OOP defender.

    2) Lots of talk about 'opportunity cost' and hopping around midfielders in £7m to £9m bracket, which for most, doesn't seem to have worked, e.g. Sterling in GW4, Son in GW5. Is patience with these assets still not key?

    3) Don't invest in defence and pump money into midfield. I get the meta-point about more injury time meaning clean sheets are less likely, but 5 game weeks is such a small sample size and can we really say that likes of Trippier/Trent/City defenders won't be worth the money in the long-run.

    4) Rotation worries about Newcastle defensive assets in CL games. Not yet based on anything observed and won't be known until this weekend - hence reluctance to WC now.

    5) Alvarez is now nailed as Pep said he was 'undroppable', We've been here before...

I try not to pay much attention to OR in the first few GWs tbh as its all so close & probably a lot of chip burners up top still.

I think there is a valid sense of opportunity cost in midfield, but I'm thinking of that more in terms of patience with Martinelli til Jesus is back or patience with Man Utd mids til they sort out their bigger issues, rather than just hopping on the seemingly "form player" of last week. Could be guilty of the latter myself but I intend to be patient with Son.

I actually have a fairly big-at-the-back setup currently (Trippier, Chilwell, Estupinan, Digne, Porro) which I'm quite happy with especially as it allows rotation by fixtures & should allow me to direct FTs on other parts of my team.

Not too worried about defensive rotation for Newcastle at the moment & looking to exploit any patterns in attacking rotation (eyeing up a Wilson punt for a few weeks)

    3. Nate(U)dog(ie)
      • 5 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

Early days. Does OR really matter much? I've had 4 awful weeks (one 2.5m, one 2m, two 7m+) and one good week yet I'm at inside 800k. If you don't agree with the narratives being put out then just do your own thing. I've been doing my own thing often to my own detriment (captaining Haaland just once, waiting on transfers until last minute until this week and rolling FTs a few times, etc.) but other things have worked out well for me (holding Bruno until his haul, Diaby GW1, not backing Chelsea apart from Colwill GW1, etc.)

Don't worry what everyone else is doing, especially if you think they're making mistakes. Be glad of it

Yeh it's been a difficult start, my OR has yo-yo'd a lot but you can still make massive gains in a week. Regarding your points:

      1) I think there are some legitimate concerns about Foden & Chilwell - my personal view is that Foden has never been clinical enough, plus there's the obvious rotation issue, and Álvarez is clearly Pep's 1st choice behind Haaland. The way MCI play, dominating possession, means that their wide players are *usually* level/outside the box and their 8s/9s/10s get the main opportunities. With Chilwell obviously we need to see what happens next week. Maddison is only not a WC pick at the moment because people are thinking short-term - he'll continue to be the fulcrum of Spurs' attack and will stay in my team. With Son I brought him in for more than 1 week too - I'll only be concerned if he doesn't pick up returns against ARS & LIV.

2-3-4) Unless you have Salah & Haaland it's quite possible to invest in both defence and mid. I have 4x 8-9m mids and 5x decent defenders (Cash, Salida, Estu, Botman & Chilly), but you could easily upgrade/downgrade some of them. My tactic over the last 3 seasons has been to have a strong 15 and rotate - it's won me a top 10k and (almost) top 20k finish. This year's pricing has made it easier.

I think it's clear there will be fewer CSs this year, so defender value will be more weighted towards attacking returns - there's a glut of teams who now have more attacking WBs, which has helped this issue. You're right - patience is key and definitely worth holding onto that WC to see how rotation works out. TAA & Tripps could be worth it, but hard to tell still.

      5) Yep, this could change of course, although Alvarez has been nailed for 5 GWs in a row now. There will obviously be rotation, but it's fairly clear that he is Pep's preferred choice to support Haaland right now - at least until KDB is back in the fold or Pep changes formation again. Make hay while the sun shines.

I think it's just a case of braving the next 2-3 GWs, then a GW9 WC with much more CL/EL rotation info could work nicely, or even save it till before Xmas period.

I think there is far more 'clickbait' rhetoric floating around FPL content this season, hence 'Essential' being banded about so much. Opinions for opinions sake.

    6. Sharkytect
      • 11 Years
      2 years, 2 months ago

4 and 5) yeah absolutely agree with you.

      3) agree that the narrative is presumptuous, but with defenders I do always feel that there is more time to assess their swings in form than attacking players; I rarely feel the need to get "ahead of the curve" with defenders who haven't been performing. Newcastle defenders for instance; let's see them bash out a couple of cleansheets and then hop on. Wouldn't expect to have lost too much ground by waiting. Attacking players, however, can smash a hattrick in against poor opposition whilst you are "waiting and seeing"; that's where I like to make more rash assessments!

      1) "essential" banded around way too much. But of those you listed, I would have considered Chilwell "essential"as recently as Sunday morning! That benching hit hard. Only haaland should be considered "essential", but madisson is fantastic value as the linchpin of an attacking looking spurs. One blank shouldn't change that. He should be in people's wildcards despite the 2 upcoming fixtures.

      2) I haven't been playing this way so much, but it COULD have worked out for those transfer-hoppers. Small sample size so far. Reassess based on another 5 gameweeks. I reckon jumping on midfielders based on fixture runs will pay off inyhe long run.

What to do with Chilwell? Will Poch start with Colwill at LB again knowing Cash will be a threat and Mudryk LW?

I don't want another Chilwell benching but I have the option of playing Bell GW6 vs WOL (H) and DGW7 EVE (A) and BUR (H). Nice thing is Foster has a 3 match ban so possibilty of cleanie vs BUR looking promising.

Benching Chilwell GW6 and moving him with my FT to Porro to have him for LUT (A) and FUL (H) sin GW8 and 9 eems sensible.

Then I will move Disasi in GW8.

That's GW9. You're considering playing a Luton defender against the resurgent Wolves attack in GW6

I won't have a Chelsea player in my starting XI beyond GW8. But just as good fixtures bred rare returns for Chelsea defence owners in GW5, I'm keeping for the good fixtures in GWs 7 and 8, unless Chilwell is benched again in GW6

I don't even have a great replacement for him lined up for GW7 anyway, as my two favorites play each other and that match will be unpredictable: Moreno and Estupinan

It's a long time away, but I think Son is pretty unlikely to drop as he's still close to a rise and people don't really have midfielders they're flocking to after the GW5 carnage. Rashford is closer to dropping, but I'd say also somewhat unlikely
