    Which one with 2FT?

    A) Chilwell & Jackson to Botman & Wilson
    B) R.Dias & Jackson to Botman & Alvarez

    Bruno Henry to Mbeumo Botman?
Or maybe Doku over Mbeumo, or even keep Bruno...?

Not too sure what to do with this lot with 1FT:

    Johnstone/Turner
    Chilwell/Udogie/Estu/Henry/Baldock
    Salah/Saka/Maddison/Eze/Chukwuemeka
    Haaland/Jackson/Morris

I would ideally like to stick to the 3-4-3 up until week 8.

Henry/Baldock injured + Chilwell uncertainty ***Do I just swap Henry for Botman?***
Chukwuemeka injured ***Do i just swap him for Rodri/Gordon etc?***

Initial plan this week, before Henry injury, was Maddison to Rashford. But now I am not sure it is worth it? I could swap Maddison to Mbeumo which is my idea as going to WC after GW8 so relatively short term punts either way. Thoughts and suggestions very much appreciated

I don't think I'd take Maddison out, everything at Spurs goes through him and they're attacking under big Ange. Henry to Botman looks good to me

I wouldn't bother replacing Chuk if you're going to WC in 3 weeks & may not even start his replacement. Your defence might force you into the Botman move although tbh I'd still be inclined to try wing it short-term & make more high-ceiling moves like getting Rashford (not sure about selling Maddison though) or maybe a Jackson - Wilson punt

      1. LiverpoolKG
        • 3 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

This is more my thinking tbh, as they are all relatively short term punts i can (hopefully) avoid any major disasters. I have three defenders fit but as mentioned Chilwell situation isnt ideal but feel i prob have one more week to work that out. Udogie not ideal next couple either tbh.
If i was to get Rash, as originally planned, who would you suggest? I have the funds for Saka/Maddison/Salah to Rash. Saka prob has slightly better fixtures than Maddison but very tight call.

I wouldn't mind losing Saka actually; kind of thinking about that myself. Arsenal still far from their best & I think Nketiah has a major dampening effect on the FPL potential of the mids (I'm assuming he might start again if Jesus starts v PSV), which is reflected in the fairly poor (by his standards) NPxG of 1.4ish. Obviously has some backfiring potential but I do think Rashford, against Burnley at least, has the higher ceiling

Would 100% agree Rashford has a higher ceiling than Saka, at any point in the season.

Lol, I have the funds, but after watching United since the start of the season, I dont know if I'd class it as I 'want' Rashford lol, just feel they cant get any worse and do have great fixtures, so if they start to click a little, they have the opponents to suit thats all

Neither really threaten the attacking three though, no? B Silva out likely just means Kovacic or Nunes in. Grealish back is the one i'm half worried about so wondering if people think he'd come in this weekend and if so whether that's for Doku or Foden

Grealish won't be back before October and I would bet its not gonna be early October either. He has a tigh injury, muscular. It's tricky.

Depends where he's playing though. If Bernardo is out a while along with Grealish then I guess Doku has to play on the right and Foden on the left, but can't ever guarantee anything with Pep

  14. Eze Really?
    • 11 Years
    2 years, 4 months ago

Previously posted under the wrong article.
An idea for content creators to explain XG to the common people.
XG I perfectly understand and the shorter the period the less accurate the data is likely to be.
I offer a few examples on how numbers can be distorted, namely fixtures, home/away, minutes, positional changes, player ability, the team they play for and players general history. There are other considerations but I believe I cover the more obvious.
As an example, I could use Son as a test case who does better than XGI constantly over his career. A bit of a dip last year but he proved last week his capabilities. In other words, XGI is not a crystal ball. Haaland who had an amazing XGI this week, scored 1 goal and the result is a total distortion on what should be expected.
For me, there is 1 key factor that seems to go amiss in many cases:
Let us go back to Son. He scored 20 points in GW4. This represents 2 thirds of all his points over 5 GW's. The distortion is obvious and the narratives are plain to see.
Is it reasonable of me to suggest taking a minimum 8 week period (going into last season if necessary), taking off the highest weekly points score and similarly with the lowest? This will remove many distortions and project a more accurate picture.

    1. Wrong Captain Choice - Ag i…
      • 16 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

Also in your Son example XG does not tell two things

      1) Change of position playing as a 9

      2) How Son likes to play against a high line rather than teams who sit back

      --
I think a lot of times XG creates a false narrative and is over used by lazy content creators who hope to blind people with numbers.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 11 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

Firstly I mention positional changes and secondly I was not out to write a book on it. We all know the infinite amount of reasons to evaluate players. My main point, like marking performance in ice skating, take out the highest score and the lowest score to get to a more definitive evaluation.

    2. The Mentaculus
      • 4 Years
      2 years, 4 months ago

Agree on "not a crystal ball". It mainly just tells you what has happened & isn't really predictive. I guess you can try to use it to anticipate the sustainability of someone's returns, but even that requires further data & contextualisation - for example you might look at Awoniyi's conversion rate & historical goalscoring record.

Even 8 weeks is kind of a small sample in reality so I'm always looking to contextualise data (with fixtures, tactical shifts and above all eye test). That said, there are a few critics of xGI around here at the moment & I don't really agree with them on ignoring stats entirely. They can be a great indicator of where to look / what to look for in games that you haven't seen, and still are really useful to quantify your broader impressions/opinions - e.g. if I can see that Nketiah is sucking the big chances away from Martinelli/Saka, I can look at the data to see more exactly how that is panning out & use this comparatively to adjust my expected rate of returns.

      1. Eze Really?
        • 11 Years
        2 years, 4 months ago

All your points have value. Maybe, as in the response above, my point is about having to use small data periods. I use the eye test as a predominant evaluation and let others inform me of data berceuse I am honestly just too lazy to bother. I get to watch the majority of matches, but for those who don't and are more reliant on data, take out the anomalies before decision making.

        1. The Mentaculus
          • 4 Years

I'm not sure about the usefulness of the "remove the top & bottom score" tbh (trying to think back to maths lessons at school to figure out what that does that does to a dataset...), just because FPL is a game of wild fluctuations rather than a steady rate of regular returns and ceiling is important especially for captaincy decisions

          1. Eze Really?

            2 years, 4 months ago

Fair enough. But I stick with my view of people seeing high points/XGI from the start of the season can mislead many.

Oh yeah I still there are plenty of examples of this - people taking Fulham's xGC from their first 3 games (without Palhinha, and with 10 men in one) to declare them one of the worst defences in the league kind of irked me

I mean that I wouldn't be surprised if Jesus/Odegaard get the points, rather than Saka/Trossard

Benching Eze is the safe choice based on ownership, however I have a gut feeling and it would be a good differential

I know Watkins hasn't scored yet but almost everygame i watched of aston villa this season he has got a big chance

Knowing that he is a proven goal scorer and great fixtures upcoming is it wise to keep him?

    Which transfer to make ?

    a) Baldock > Botman/Schar
    b) Chilly > Botman/Schar
    c) Kabore > Botman/Shar

Was leaning towards Chilly but as Baldock is injured, maybe he should be first on the chopping block?
