    A lot of managers, players and even pundits complaining about number of fixtures in a season... There are 38 PL fixtures per season, with 52 weeks in the calendar year. Effectively this means they get 14 weeks a season off (if you played one game per week) I know that obviously doesn't include pre-season and internationals. To combat fixture congestion I'd really like to see;

    A) Scrap the League Cup
    i) At least scrap two-leg semi-finals if you insist on keeping it.

    B) Scrap FA Cup Replays.

    Imagine being able to play a whole season with 14 weekends (and weeks) to spare. Therefore one game every 3/4 days in a 266 day period = 88 potential fixtures at a game every 3 days or 66 potential fixtures at a game every 4 days. I think one game every four days isn't too much to ask, and well, you're not playing 66 fixtures (domestic) a season are you? Don't get me wrong I understand that pre-season and internationals get in the way but here's a breakdown of some math based on fixtures for a club in the PL & Europe;

    Let me quickly do some math;
    PL - 38
    UCL (standard format to the final) - 6 GS, 2xRo16, 2xQF, 2xSF, 1xF = 13
    FA Cup - (excluding replays) - 3rd, 4th, 5th, QF, SF, F = 6
    League Cup - 3rd, 4th, QF, SFx2, F = 6

    63 games (at most for two teams) if you went to the final of all domestic and European cups (excluding Community Shield, Super Cup & Club World Cup).

    Is my math right? Have I missed a round in any cups for any PL teams? My idea of ditching the SF two-leg tie only saves one fixture but brings it down to 62 games in a season. If you scrapped the League Cup entirely you'd bring it down to around 57 games in a season (providing there were no FA Cup Replays).

    57 Games in 38 Weeks/266 Days would = one game every 4.6 days (excluding internationals & pre-season), it would just come down to scheduling effectively.

        It's not just managers. Imagine you're a Luton fan and you've made travel arrangements and now can't get refunded on your travel, or you bought a ticket to the game but you actually have plans on Friday night? So now you can't get refunded on your travel arrangements, have a ticket for a game you can't attend. All because FA Cup needs to be replayed when they could've just played another 30 minutes on the night and maybe some penalties? It's a joke.

          The replays are massively important to lower league clubs. Luton fans will have been begging for replays themselves not long ago so this logic is just rubbish really.

          Maybe try being better on the day against a team 2 divisions below you?

          1. Zenith UK
            • 9 Years

            So your argument is purely money. Cool, in that case let's make a whole new cup and play every other day to drive up income possibilities?

            Yes Luton should've won, but they didn't. So forget the Luton argument, what about the Burnley fans who have been inconvenienced. What's your argument then? Burnley fan could've made the Monday night kick-off but can't make the Friday night kick-off all because Luton couldn't beat a team two divisions below them. Why should they be punished?

            The logic isn't rubbish at all, I'm just not prioritising a small cash injection from a replay over the general outlook of the beautiful game. Your logic is rubbish "yeah let's have a replay so we can sell a few more tickets and maybe televise another game". That's it?

              Money for small teams who can be sustained for years off the back of a replay, yeah.

              That’s just tough I guess? Blame the Prem for rearranging fixtures and it’s got nothing to do with fixture congestion.

                I dont think any team can be “sustained for years off a back of a replay”.

                That’s wild exaggeration.
                Unless you have an 80,000 fan stadium and you fill it up for a replay AND charge upwards of 70 quid for ALL tickets AND manage a full stadium.
                Then yes a case could be made for a small club.

      A. Have the League Cup final - finished by December

      B. Meeting half way - 3rd round replays as still a chance of smaller non-league teams in round then
      going from 4th round to 6th round 90mins then pens.

      Personally -I would have the semi finals away from Wembley leaving the magic of getting to the cup final intact

        Eliminate one of the cups- obvious which one would go- or make clubs select one of the two cups in which to compete. Radical and probably unpopular as hell but it reduces the # of matches played

          Keep both cups

          Premier League teams have bigger squads with Under 23/Under21 they can still play in the League cup & not moan about number of games.

          Now a winter break - how many will play friends during this period behind closed doors?

      Nonesense.

      Make one cup like everyone else and problem solved.
