Following hot on the heels of the release of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fantasy game is the equivalent of the Asian Cup.

Unlike the AFCON version, however, this is an official game and features on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) website.

In this introductory piece, we take you through the basics of the game.

A bit of jargon-busting before we kick off: ‘Matchday’ is the equivalent of a Gameweek, while a ‘Gameday’ is an individual calendar day within a Matchday.

PICKING A SQUAD

Asian Cup Fantasy

Head over to this page to enter a team.

After hitting ‘Create Team’, you can either hit ‘Auto Complete’ at this early stage or you can create a first draft. Either way, unlimited transfers are allowed before the Matchday 1 deadline.

There are the following FPL-style rules for picking a squad:

  • A budget of 100m (this will increase to 105m in the knockout rounds)
  • A squad of 15 players, made up of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards
  • A starting XI in any of the following formations: 3-4-3, 3-5-2, 4-3-3, 4-4-2, 4-5-1, 5-3-2 or 5-4-1
  • A captain nominated from your starting XI

The limits of players per nation depend on the stage of the tournament:

  • Group Stage: 3
  • Round of 16: 4
  • Quarter-finals: 5
  • Semi-finals: 6
  • Final: 8

You will then be promoted to nominate a captain and enter a team name.

CREATING AN ACCOUNT

Asian Cup Fantasy

At this point, you can either log in using your existing AFC account details, use Apple/Twitter/Google to sign in or create an account.

Once you have an active account and verify it, you can begin tinkering with your squad via the ‘My Team’ tab – just like FPL.

MANUAL SUBS/CAPTAINCY CHANGES

Whereas AFCON Fantasy is a bit more hands-off, Asian Cup Fantasy very much follows the UEFA Champions League model.

Between individual gamedays (eg Friday, Saturday, Sunday), managers can tinker with their teams and make manual substitutions/captaincy changes:

SCORING SYSTEM

Asian Cup Fantasy

The scoring system is mostly identical to FPL.

The usual array of points is on offer for goals, assists, clean sheets and appearances.

And there are familiar deductions for cards, own-goals, missed penalties and goals conceded (for goalkeepers and defenders):

As for the key differences, scoring a goal from outside the box gets an extra point.

Fantasy assists are essentially covered in the six lines that come below the own-goal row in the graphic above, with rewards for penalties and free-kicks won or rebound shots in the event of a goal.

TRANSFERS

As mentioned earlier, you can tinker away to your heart’s content until the Asian Cup curtain-raiser on January 12.

After Matchday 1, you’ll be awarded the following free transfers per round:

Number of free transfers allowed
Before Matchday 2 (group stage)2
Before Matchday 3 (group stage)2
Before Matchday 4 (round of 16)Unlimited
Before Matchday 5 (quarter-finals)4
Before Matchday 6 (semi-finals)5
Before Matchday 7 (final)6

A maximum of one free transfer can be rolled over to the following week.

Each additional transfer will cost you minus four points, as in FPL.

The daily deadlines are two hours before the first kick-off.

CHIPS/BOOSTERS

There are two familiar-sounding chips (or ‘boosters’, as they’re called here) to play, namely the Triple Captain and the Bench Boost.

    Hi everyone:
    Two questions.
What is the news on Bowen injury?
Did Pep say anything more on when Haaland would be back?

      It's painful.

Is anyone else thinking about getting KDB straight in? He looked very good yesterday.

Considering, but everyone saying too early. However he'd be coming in for Son or Salah so any minutes are upside for me

Yes, I reckon if I combine with Foden I'll get 90 minutes and heaps of points.

All other midfielders are away, injured or out of form except for Palmer.

No- Pep very clear they will manage minutes. They don’t want reoccurrence of injury with CL starting up again in March so will ease back

Nope. Did that once already this season. Until he starts at least two games in a row in the league I'm not getting him.

Backed him for the run in last year and he cost me top spot in my mini league. Won't be making that mistake again. Needs to look fully fit before I'll go there.

There is also Pep roulette, he is older now and has had "severe" injuries as in football terms. I can see Pep managing his minutes to keep him fit and healthy for big games. I wouldn't bet on him starting twice a week, he needs more recovery time these days.

Think that depends on if Son is going to be playing on the left or upfront.

I don't think anyone, with doubles, blanks, injuries etc. can be locked in for the remainder of the season.

There are very few real season keepers. Odds for them both to be without injuries for the rest of the season aren't greatest either.

Thoughts on still captaining Bowen despite the injury doubt?

Surely he either starts or misses out completely

    1. Tonyawesome69

You need to make sure you pick a VC nailed fo start as you could end up with no captain if Bowen (C) misses out

I don't see him as captain material even if he's fine and Paqueta's fine. West Ham don't generally score lots of goals, Sheff Utd will park the bus. I suppose the caveat is he might be captain material this week because its all a much of a muchness

Yes, it's between Palmer, Foden and Alvarez for me. Saka perhaps could be an option, but he rarely hauls.

Really? He was a no-brainer as captain for me this week before the injury doubt. 7 goals, 2 assists in 9 away matches, only Son has more points away.

if he can return on the road vs Liverpool, Villa, Spurs, Arsenal, etc... I'm not sure Sheff Utd will stop him, no matter how many buses they park

It's of little significance in the grand scheme of things but who at FPL has watched Ben Brereton's career and decided that he's a midfielder? Are they a bit thick or are they putting in an OOP player on purpose for some unknown reason?

    1. JBG

Hasn't he played winger, attacking mid, supporting striker and striker these last few years?

      1. CarsonYeung
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 11 months ago

I've never heard of him playing out wide, on a consistent basis at least, his attributes aren't exactly suited to it are they? The bloke is a big lump of a centre forward, who plays as striker for club and national team

I've never been a fan of players like Salah getting midfield classifications but this one seems even less based in reality than that

    2. Zeeshz
      • 2 Years
      1 year, 11 months ago

He's largely played on the left wing for Villarreal this season. So, he's a midfielder as per FPL Towers' classification mechanism. Them's the rules.

FWIW, the ones to blame here are probably Villarreal. Did they do any scouting at all before signing him?! I mean who thinks putting one of the Championship's best box forwards on the wing is a good idea?

      1. CarsonYeung
        • 13 Years
        1 year, 11 months ago

Fair enough if that's true, can't say I've watched him play a minute for Villarreal. As I say in another reply, never been a fan of the classification system. Even Aubameyang got put as a mid a few years back. If you ask 100 EFL fans what position Ben Brereton plays how many do you think will say striker?

He's hardly played anywhere for Villarreal - that's why he's back in England.

I can guarantee you Wilder hasn't signed him to play left wing. Probably irrelevant for FPL anyway.

Oh and if he signed for any other team than SHU he could have been a great differential pick.

That's what everyone said about Lundstram. Perhaps someone to put on watchlist now and remove later. A bit expensive for rotating 5th mid.

    Mauricio Pochettino on Christopher Nkunku:

"It's not related with previous injury, it's a different problem. Small issue in hip. Six months from his injury. He was involved in a few games. Now it's to be cautious. Not involved tomorrow. Saturday? Not sure."

It is related to his previous injury (indirectly) because when you get an injury and you can't properly train it makes all your other body parts susceptible to injury when you start building back up the fitness levels. Ever tried taking a week out from the gym or any regular exercise through illness or whatever and going back full throttle? Never ends well.

Michail Antonio set to be out for another 4-6 weeks after suffering a setback in his recovery from his knee ligament injury.

Likely to delay/prevent any move away for Danny Ings, especially with Bowen fitness unclear. Bowen and Paqueta undergoing scans this week.

In the time of AFCON, would you rather take B. Johnson or Eze? Johnson plays in all attack team, takes the place of Son (assuming he comes before Werner in pecking order?) in the time of his absence and has pretty good fixtures. Eze also has pretty good fixtures after gw21, but plays for a worse team and has had an injury filled season. What do you think? Eze also 0.2 m more expensive.
