Technical Area

This evening we bring back our series of “Technical Area” articles which offer tactical insight on a match or team each Gameweek. While the Guardian chalkboards are no more, this season we have built our own maps and charts to feed these articles and to provide a preview of the kind of tools and content available to our members…

Having obtained Opta data from Sunday’s Community Shield match between City and Chelsea, we were all set to analyse each side’s respective systems in terms of Fantasy potential but the dismissal of Branislav Ivanovic weights the head-to-head team comparison too much in Man City’s favour. As a result, we’ve decided to take a look at the league champions’ new 3-4-1-2 formation, as utilised by Roberto Mancini is several pre-season games prior to yesterday’s match – in particular, we focus on the midfield area.

Milner and Kolarov
Looking at City’s average position (below left, top), the system played out more like a 3-2-3-2 yesterday. With Vincent Kompany (4) stationed deep and central, the wide-positioned centre-halves afforded City plenty width at the back, which allowed James Milner (7) and Aleksandar Kolarov (13) to push far forward on the flanks – when in possession, the duo were almost as far up the field as Samir Nasri (19). Indeed, the pair received more passes in the final third of the pitch than any other City players; Milner’s 22 and Kolarov’s 20 were superior to frontmen Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero, with 17 and 14 respectively.

Man City Average Positions

Mancini’s system demands the pair supply plenty of balls from out wide and both delivered time and again; Milner registered 11 crosses and Kolarov 10 but the former’s distribution in the final third was relatively poor. The former Villa man has a lowly 71.4% pass success rate in this area – compare that to Kolarov’s 86.7% or Nasri’s 89.5% and it’s clear that, despite creating four goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (more than any player in yesterday’s match) there was plenty room for improvement in Milner’s contribution.

From a Fantasy perspective, these positions will clearly be crucial to City in the season ahead if Mancini decides to operate with such a system. What also looks essential in order for this formation to flourish is a high work-rate in these key areas. Both players made three tackles each – a tally bettered only by Pablo Zabaleta – while the pair also demonstrated strong aerial ability; Kolarov won four duels in the air, more than any other player yesterday, while Milner was next best with two, alongside Vincent Kompany and Nigel De Jong.

It seems unlikely that Nasri or David Silva will be suited to the wide roles in such a system, then, meaning the pair would likely battle it out for the role in “the hole” behind the front two whenever Mancini rolls out this tactic. With the City boss also playing the likes of Zabaleta and Gael Clichy in the back-three, the versatility of the City full-backs could well prosper from a Fantasy perspective within such a line-up.

Despite Mancini’s post-match uncertainty over the tactics, there’s no doubt the new formation has been a definite hit so far for the Etihad club, with Wigan’s successful implementation of a three-man defence in the second half of last season highlighting its capabilities within the Premier League, if utilised intelligently.

Man City Average Positions

A quick glimpse at City’s shape in their previous encounter against Chelsea (left) highlights the difference. Silva (21) and Nasri (19) were the wide men that day but both have a tendency to cut inside when on the ball and, for all their intricate possession, Mancini’s men lacked any real width further up the field – a criticism that was levelled at the champions on a number of occasions last term. It’s perhaps debatable as to whether this will be their default tactic but it clearly offers City a very strong Plan B, going on yesterday’s performance and result.

Toure and Nasri
As David Silva continued to build up his fitness with a brief cameo yesterday, Yaya Toure and Nasri took the opportunity to grab our Fantasy attention with a goal apiece in the 3-2 win. As the average position map (top, left) highlights, Toure (42) was relatively deep, playing just ahead of Nigel De Jong (34) but he was the beating heart of the City side, making an incredible 100 passes – a statistic that will no doubt catch the eye of Fantasy managers playing the Sky Sports game, bearing in mind the new bonus point system. For all his possession, though, Toure rarely ventured into the final third with any real intent – he made just 10 successful passes in the final third and scored with his only effort, firing home from outside the box after a poor John Terry clearance.

Nasri, however, demonstrated the danger he could carry when playing in “the hole” in this new system. The Frenchman made 17 passes inside Chelsea’s defensive third – the most executed by any City player, with only two of his passes going astray in this vital area. The former Arsenal man also managed two shots on target inside the box; once again, this stat was higher than any of his team mates and, with a goal and assist for his endeavours, he scored 15.3 in our ICT Index, the top mark for Mancini’s side in yesterday’s 3-2 triumph.

Having looked at the midfield, our next step is to analyse the respective displays of Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero within the system in a separate “Versus” article exclusively for Members. With a price difference of 9.0 to 11.5 in FPL, the question of who to plump for is a hot topic on the site right now ahead of Saturday’s rapidly approaching deadline, with Tevez’s goal already boosting his ownership considerably over the past 24 hours.

He was not that good as he was always on peoples bench when he scored. And for 5.5 he is not good enough to always start, neither is he cheap enough to be a bench fodder. I will avoid.

i was stung on numerous occasions last year of dyer on my bench and points coming in the most inconvenient times (actually i might have got them via auto subs once or twice)

I'm avoiding 5.0 as I don't see all that much more value there then in the 4.5 bracket. But Davide Santon and Rangel are the 2 I'd consider from that bracket.

First off, 3 Swansea players... wow, I dont think I would be trusting their defence that much this season, just have a funny feeling we wont get as much out of them compared to others, and for 5 mill where you can spend less and get more probably.
Dont really rate Ramires as a good point collector for FPL, but thats just my opinion.
I enjoy the Cazorla and Kagawa picks a lot, but Caz hasn't got that great of a start games wise.
      Otherwise top notch!

Yo man! Yeah im touch & go with 3 swans, but totally open to suggestions, i really dont havea clue who can offer better value from what teams lol, surrounding the defence and a cheap mid instead of Britton.

Ramires i havea feeling about, always seems to be in the mix, got forward a lot on sunday, may work out well, time will tell, cant wait for it to start!

Cheers on the punts though, i like them a lot, gotta take a bit of a gamble and i feel safe with them, but hasn't caz been performing? ive heard he's been playing well? be away from my comp for a few mins mate but will check back here upon my return 🙂

You could always scale back William to someone like Clyne(Southampton) who is a young promising right back, with good attacking potential, save a million there and then upgrade Britton to Nathan Dyer (your choice there really).

Oh fair play with Ramires, he might be a catch. Im sticking with the solid Lampard I'm thinking at the moment!

Yea seems that Caz is performing, he could be awesome but it's just tough opposition that would scare me away from having him.

thats a good point really, opting for someone that doesn't necessarily have to be reliable but someone with good promising attacking potential like ya say, did think about clyne actually. Could easy upgrade britton then like ya say, dyer may be a good shout, may hold promise this season too. yeah i had lamps, but spread funds elsewhere on bale and kagawa, its all predictions as yet till we see for sure i guess.

Yeah arsenals opposition does intimidate me slightly, but the whole arsenal team looks great even without RVP if he does go, like the look of caz. cant wait for weekend! need to see those points so badly! addiction to fantasy football lol.

Like you say, I can't wait for it all to start then I can analyse what midfielders are actually gonna perform and make well judged decisions rather then guided guessing really.

The addiction is gonna be ridiculous this year, especially with the fact I'm in a money league where I can win hundreds of pounds from coming first, second or third in specific leagues... I'm gonna need your help a lot ha 😉

haha! i know yeah, its all we can go off at this stage, well, at the start of any season. Oh are you? i'm only in one league, need to ask around for some leagues to join, other than the one im in with mates for a money league i usually find some random ones on facebook to get involved in, ours isn't hundreds of pounds tho, its more manager of the month takes a fiver from everyone else, then overall money winner, i won it last season, didnt get a penny from anyone, so im owed money this season! lol!

oh thats fine mate i'll need your help too, im usually hot off the mark at the beginning but then seem to slip mid season then claw back at tend, this season will be different, we'll storm it man, top 10k finishes 🙂

Haha bloody typical! I never storm the beginning week, it sucks and then I proper build up and up over the time. You best be getting that cash off them otherwise that really sucks! I really want to start well to make sure I can win some money within thee leagues.

We will destroy it this season, in the end I was around the 19k mark, hoping for even better this year!

Haha so true, I should be up with the news and everything above them hopefully! SHould give me the edge and get me the money, most of them are old foggies who don't keep up with it too much, and are a bit casual with their picks.

Yea man, I was top 10k at one point but towards the end i bombed it bad for some reason. Think I picked captains badly.

I'm risking the first week without Bale... what do you think?

Yeah as long as we just pay attention to who is doing what in teams and performance we'll finish way above rivals, let em get frustrated lol. Oh in that case then yeah you should happily see that money sailing your way, easy money! BUT people liek that can also be lucky, my mate didnt even look at his team for the first month last season and was sitting in the top 5,000! unbeleivable.

Thats well good that, but yeah a lot of people js
ust make some bad picks and that slips towards the end, not this season tho! hell no! lol.

Hmm its a tricky one, there's even talk of bale being pushed into a striker position, rumours tho i bet, either way i just feel safe having him, i dont think he's essential mate, you'll be fine starting without him, but if he explodes be quick to pounce, and leave some options open to get him in, for me though i need his security, and not for him to 'bale' on me...oh dear, such a crap pun there lol!

That would be bloody annoying, if I put loads of effort in, they do hardly any thing and be lucky and get lots of points from it. I will be pissed. I can't be making any slip ups this season, but it's always likely with the captain choices lets face it...

I am loving that pun... came out of nowhere! Yea I have the option of getting him in for Lampard whenever I want really, I fear that I am probably gonna take a hit at some point though just to get a few people that I actually want in. But I see this as a bit more beneficial at the end of the day because you will probably gain more from it then you lose!

If we end up 10k+, we are so in the money for sure.

i know yeah, and usually happens from them copying your team, thats what some of my mates did, the cheats! lol. Yeah thats what requires half of overall team attention...the captain. get that right and your set, so hard though, but we've enough experience now to know whats a sensible decision, has to be some points tho to just go with gut feeling, so good when it pays off, there will be a few occasions like that for me.

haha! coming up with some randomers today, suggested to a guy he should call his team 'kagawa shower' but sounded too much like power shower lmao! ive called my team 'Bayern Andsellin' this season haha! loads liked it before.

Exactly, easy transfer out and in if u need/want him, more to gain as well than lose like you say, so many options this season. We should finish high and good this season, 10k is very realistic.

Gonna have to be done with those captain decisions, it best be a good one this year. I think last year i did terribly for them and still got high in the rankings so if I actually get a gd run of captain choices anything is possible.

Those are some proper classics... I named my team WhataFabiolessteam this year, thought it was quite gd. But that is well good what your team name is. ha

think there's way too much invested in defence which tightens up flexibility when trying to transfer out mids and forwards a few GW's in (unless your wildcarding), i'd spread the funds in mid and upgrade song or yaya, i did have yaya but need to see how he goes first, on the other hand it could be a good shout, who knows, but thats what i'd do.

Call me old fashioned but I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would downgrade Aguero for Tevez. Aguero is by far the superior player and will be over the entire season.

2.5M is not an answer as all you'll do is 'upgrade' players who will score you the same points as the players you had before.

I look forward to all the "How do I upgrade Tevez to Aguero without taking an 8pt hit?" comments after GW1.

where were you between 2009 and 2011?

obviously it's a risk but it's understandable, tevez in terms of value is probably the best pick in the game as he is a legit captain option as well. think i'm sticking with sergio just because i'd rather avoid the potential situation you mentioned, downgrading later is much easier.
