    Nkunku or Eze?

Or start with Eze and switch to Nkunku?

Nkunku. I think I prefer the 6.5ms over Eze. Slightly cheaper, probably similar potential. MGW has pens to match Eze, Johnson the highest xG, there's also Szoboszlai who could be playing a more advanced role.

Eze has a 0.5m premium on him as a known entity. I'm not convinced that he's worth that little bit extra.

And yet the bookies do not think Southampton will go down. 11/8. Make yourself some good money if you are so certain. This article is pretty poorly written though. Although Martin does play a possession based style, what it does not mention is that this is designed to invite pressure onto our defence. The idea then is to break very quickly from the back and counter press aggressively when we lose position. I think most contributors to this article have only seen us on TV.

Yes almost certain to have him for first few GWs. No other CB has had a pre season I don’t think it’s obvious that Konate will displace him - he kept his spot end of last season when Konate was fit.

Yes that’s right, I think him and King got reclassified in the same season because I remember my midfield the year before it, which was:

          Sanchez | Hazard | Firmino | King

Was beautiful to watch each week

Is 180 points a success at 8/8.5 for a forward when equivalent Mids like Odegaard Bruno get 200 plus?

Josh King was immense as a 16-17 midfielder

18-19 was the 6.5 fwd pre-season flavour, only 6.0 C Wilson and 5.5 Fraser were the two to get

Firmino did well 17-18 and then Mane became the man next to Salah

Tbh mate I think you're looking at it from the wrong perspective. It's not like he'll be playing the same IRL positions with a new FPL classification - it's the actual shift from midfield to striker that produced such a massive boost to his output & made him so much better as an FPL pick. I'm sure you've seen the shift on transfermarkt or something so I won't quote stats at you but I think I'm confident enough that the quality he showed in the new role from GW26 onwards should see him first choice there to start the season

I agree we need to look at those last 13 games

However, he's still a converted CAM/auxiliary FWD. That grey area I think is the key when looking at the history of mids to forwards re-classification

        1. The Mentaculus
          • 4 Years
          1 year, 4 months ago

I guess this "auxiliary" factor is the crux of the disagreement. Personally I would say he looks like someone who never found really a found a role that suited him in the PL til those last 13 (albeit that's a small sample)

          1. Ser Davos
            • 10 Years
            1 year, 4 months ago

I'm kind of coming at from an FPL perspective (loss of key points), whilst you're coming at it from more a real-life perspective (new role)

If he were to succeed as a forward, it would be an outlier far more than the norm.

I completely agree he looks a great option, but my argument is that it is superseded by the new re-classification

            1. The Mentaculus
              • 4 Years
              1 year, 4 months ago

Ok, yeah I do see your point that if he were to continue this season with the same split between starts in midfield and starts up front, the reclassification would be a big issue. I just think Arteta will predominantly use him as a forward now

              1. Ser Davos
                • 10 Years
                1 year, 4 months ago

to swerve back to real-life for a sec on my part, I think that's part of the re-classification issue generally: they aren't conventional no.9 talismen

Havertz appears as a classic case. Could well play up top for long periods, but with Jesus about and not actually being a traditional no.9; he could well float deeper in some capacity and probably will (to some extent)

        2. Ser Davos
          • 10 Years
          1 year, 4 months ago

but the big blind spot is still the loss of 5 points per goal and clean sheet points. This hammers the re-classified traditionally. Every pre-season the claim is, "ah, but now he'll do better in the BPS". Only they never really do, at least long term.

          1. The Mentaculus
            • 4 Years

Just spotted the parallel debate on the previous page - what I'm getting at is similar to what Jim is saying with his extrapolation of how many points he would have got if we project the returns of those 13 games across the season - i.e. the loss of 1pt per goal and CS would be massively outweighed by the actual difference in his output when moving from mid-fwd

            1. Ser Davos
              • 10 Years
              1 year, 4 months ago

yes, I acknowledge the need to focus on the last 13 games with the new re-classification and the new bonus

but these theme has played out so often over the years

it's not inconceivable he does well; I'm not dismissing him. I'm just tempering him, because every mid that gets re-classified gets hyped because of a) bonus b) a proportionate price to compensate

far, far more re-classified mids to forwards have failed than succeeded

              1. The Mentaculus

by all means come back to this debate as its an interesting one. I too could be lulled in, but I see it as an FPL mirage

If he was a classified mid, he'd be a 90% lock I'd suggest

So my argument is purely based upon his (new) classification

wasn't actually a great option in his second stint, but yes, his prime years as a forward and he would have Shirely overcome the re-classification

Depends how you're classing success really - scored about 20 goals in a car-crash season, think he was the highest scoring striker after Kane.

            • 10 Years

I'm talking purely FPL. He wasn't a great option. A 12.5ish forward outdone by the value in midfield (and defence).

That's kind of the theme of what I'm drumming on about. This is purely in FPL point terms

Yeah that's why I added the bit at the end - he was the second highest-scoring striker in the game that season.

emphasises how tough it is for strikers: he was the second highest forward, but was a never a sustained part of the template:

purely down to classification (and price)

classified mids that venture forward are gold

classified forwards really need to be a talismanic no.9 priced well

If Havertz had been classified as a forward by FPL last season, he would have scored 160/37=4.3ppg.

But from GW25 on he would have scored about 100/14=7.1.

So he's overpriced based on the season as a whole, but his last 14 matches were better than Isak and Watkins (but not as good as Haaland and Mateta).

Leaning towards 4.5 def rotation team, been on this draft for 2 weeks now, consider it good?

    Miguel
    Konsa, Andersen, Mykolenko
    Saka, Son, Bruno, Eze
    Haaland, Isak, Muniz

    4.0, Robinson, Faes, Winks

Ahhh yeah I see. Leif Davis the main one as said below, basically plays as a LW, Robinson likes to bomb forward, Rico Henry if he's fit, Coufal, Ait Nouri.

        Set piece takers

    4. Silecro

      Plenty:

Andersen (cry) - very good at set pieces, got a couple last season and even assists by someone else scoring the rebound from his shot
Robinson (ful) - fullback in Silva system where he uses his crosses a lot
Dunk - probably the best set-piece specialist there is, and new coach couple of days ago told he will use set pieces A LOT
Burn (new) - solid set pieces threat
Davis - the ipswich guy with 18 assists last season

There's probably more of them, just couple of ones who springs into mind first

Here's a 6.5m player nobody at all is talking about.

    Rice.

He's nailed as houses, takes corners, and last year got 7g, 9a. He doesn't play DM for Arsenal really. His heat map is more progressive as an 8 and he had 71 pen area touches last season as well.

It's a super unsexy pick but could be a reliable performer over the season. Same with Rodri. He's attacking a little more often and got 8g, 10a. These traditional DMs for the top sides still chip in with attacking returns considering how often their teams are on the attack.

We're not talking about Ndidi type of no. 6s. These guys do actually get goals and points. Could they be worth picking up to start the season? Perhaps we got to be a bit more open minded about these picks. Rodri also got like the 2nd most number of double digit returns. Every time he gets an attacking return his BPS baseline means he gets bonus to go along with it.

One potential issue for me is that going after Merino makes me wonder if Rice will revert to the DM/Partey role

Yeah he's a serious consideration for my team (but then again, I'm not allowed to make transfers).

They sound like long term set and forget players. I agree that we need to have them also, but at least early in the season they are unlikely bandwagons. I think I prefer pretty settled defence and change my mid priced attackers depending on fixtures. However there could be merit owning them and switching between Son, Palmer, Foden etc also.

The problem here is that your 6.5m midfielder isn't a set and forget, it's typically a player you rotate to hit the form/blocks of fixtures.

Rice and Rodri are just slightly better versions of JWP. You look at annual returns and you think it might be worth a go. Then you get these players in and the 3s and 2s start rolling in while some random from Fulham is going ballistic.

More of an argument for them in FT with 1.3 pts for each 90min win, in FPL... not for me. Especially not to start with after late returns from euros.

Fair and the best argument against them. Maybe we're doing it wrong though. Maybe we should hold our budget slots and rotate our premiums.

Swapping our Son, Salah, Foden, Saka, Palmer slots around rather than the 6.5m stalwarts.

This is something I intend to do more - not so much with Salah or especially Haaland, but the 10m mids + Palmer can be rotated.

More to the point, I need to get away from rotating cheap defenders this year. Too many transfers wasted for too little gain there.

That might be difficult with trying to manage team value. That player you have inform might have inflated by 1 mil so getting him back might require otherwise undesirable sacrifices.

    5. x.jim.x

Attacking returns from DMs are massively random because they're often worldies.

Rice got 7 goals from 3 xG and 8 assists from 5 xA
Rodri got 8 goals from 4xG and 9 assists from 4 xA

Fair enough as a punt in a DGW or something, but do you really want to watch these players racking up 2s and 3s most week, while someone like Nkunku or Bailey is tearing it up?

      1. Ginkapo FPL
        • 14 Years

This. If you pick em you need to play week in week out regardless of fixtures.

Rodri last season would have been value to do that with, but that has to be the attitude

    6. Ginkapo FPL
      • 14 Years

Could be worth a shot picking up Rodri and Rice if running a Salah and Haaland team. You need some cheaper set and forget options with that approach

      1. Ginkapo FPL
        • 14 Years

For me Rice is a no go as the odds of picking up double Arsenal defence at some point is high

    7. Ser Davos
      • 10 Years

I like Rodri to start with, but I don't like Rice

Simply because Arsenal slots are so precious

outside of Haaland/Gvardiol there's much to tempt us at City so Rodri can hypothetically have the third spot until Foden or one of the 6.5s emergs

Too many 5.5-6.5 attacking options (on paper) to consider them really.

    I've gone from this;

    Raya
    Gvardiol TAA Murillo
    Gordon CHO Salah(c) ESR
    Haaland(v) Muniz Isak

    4.0GK Barco Winks THB

    To this;

    Raya
    Gvardiol Porro Murillo
    Gordon CHO Salah(v) Mbeumo
    Haaland Muniz Isak(c)

    4.0GK Barco Winks Faes

Think the latter is a bit more balanced. Going against the grain somewhat with Mbeumo over Eze but can easily switch after GW3 if needed

Looking at the value of a switch to 352.

Current team playing 343 with 0.5 itb

    Miguel / 4.0
    Andersen / Gvardiol / Myko / Konsa / Barco
    Salah / Saka / Son / Nkunku / Amad
    Watkins / Isak / Muniz

    Proposing a switch of:
    Andersen > Castagne/Robinson
    Gvardiol > Munoz
    Amad > Gordon
    Muniz > 4.5

This would give me the 7.5 price point in mid. And the ability to jump onto whichever out of darwin, jota or gakpo become liverpools #9 for a max of 2 moves.

    What are your thoughts?
