Rashford + Fernandes: United’s FPL midfielders assessed for 2024/25

With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2024/25 nearing, we’re welcoming back our team of Hall of Famers and guest writers. Here, two-time Indian FPL champion and Manchester United fan Lateriser discusses Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

FPL 2024/25 first draft team reveals: Haaland, Salah or both? 2

So my club Manchester United have been a bit Jekyll and Hyde under Erik ten Hag and their options have almost been alternating between being good and not so good. In this article, I will be talking about our prospects in attack, mainly focusing on whether Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) and Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m) will be options to consider in FPL this season.

Let us first look at United’s underlying numbers in the last two seasons. In all the images used below, we will have the 2022/23 data on the left and the 2023/24 data on the right.

While we scored the same amount of goals as we did in the first season under ten Hag, the expected goals (xG) data actually reduced drastically which was visible in a very underwhelming season. We were 10th for goals and xG in 2023/24. The season before that (ten Hag’s first) wasn’t that bad as we were 6th for xG and 8th for goals. We did have a huge chunk of injuries last year, however, and Casemiro (£5.0m) pretty much lost his legs (was unfit) which affected our play. I think it is crucial that we find a new midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo (£5.5m) this season otherwise I’d be wary of investing in our defence.

        This reminds me of rashford 2 years ago, he had a full pre season, no injuries and had a really good season. Last season he missed pre season with back complaints and couldn’t catch up on fitness and look what happened. This year I think rashford goes 180+ points as I think he needs to succeed this season after missing the euros last season and for a pride sake.

      Why is there a D in fridge but not in refrigerator?

      As for the team, the starting XI is strong. Not gone on Mbuemo but not a bad choice. Bench seems weak for no Haaland or Salah.

    I'm thinking of starting with Son and switching to Palmer, but realise that there aren't many easy places to save 0.5m, risk of price rises and potential hits. I'm wary of the 51% Palmer ownership also.

    Which of these looks better to start with?

    A. Son + a 6.5 mid (Nkunku/Rodri/Szoboszlai) + a 5.0 mid (Rogers/Amad)

    B. Palmer + x2 5.5 mids (CHO / Andreas / Smith Rowe)

    One of the mids in both options would rotate with Muniz.

            I was responding to Martinelli comment rather than your team which is good- possibly Barco Mykolenko over Konsa HB for me, Muniz over Wood (Awoniyi back now) and CHO (or Minteh) over Andreas

    Hi mates!
    I want to WC gw6 so I'm attacking the fixtures and don't want to take risks with players returning late or teams with new coaches.
    Are there any major concerns in this Haaland + Salah team? I think It's the best I've seen.

        Same feeling with Nkunku. Actually, I'm also not 100% sold on Eze or Gordon. Would love to be able to add Son or Saka to the midfield but it requires too much compromise...

      Looks good - suggest might consider Nkunku Winks HB to Minteh CHO ( good rotation) and Barco and Henderson in goal if we get clarity he is no 1 which I believe he is

    Triple Palace but Munoz is so attacking, Mateta was on fire the 2nd half of last year so think he’s a better pick than Solanke and Henderson I prefer to Flekken
