With Gameweek 1 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) 2024/25 nearing, we’re welcoming back our team of Hall of Famers and guest writers. Here, two-time Indian FPL champion and Manchester United fan Lateriser discusses Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.

FPL 2024/25 first draft team reveals: Haaland, Salah or both? 2

So my club Manchester United have been a bit Jekyll and Hyde under Erik ten Hag and their options have almost been alternating between being good and not so good. In this article, I will be talking about our prospects in attack, mainly focusing on whether Marcus Rashford (£7.0m) and Bruno Fernandes (£8.5m) will be options to consider in FPL this season.

Let us first look at United’s underlying numbers in the last two seasons. In all the images used below, we will have the 2022/23 data on the left and the 2023/24 data on the right.

While we scored the same amount of goals as we did in the first season under ten Hag, the expected goals (xG) data actually reduced drastically which was visible in a very underwhelming season. We were 10th for goals and xG in 2023/24. The season before that (ten Hag’s first) wasn’t that bad as we were 6th for xG and 8th for goals. We did have a huge chunk of injuries last year, however, and Casemiro (£5.0m) pretty much lost his legs (was unfit) which affected our play. I think it is crucial that we find a new midfield partner for Kobbie Mainoo (£5.5m) this season otherwise I’d be wary of investing in our defence.

MARCUS RASHFORD

if you were told Raya was guaranteed to score exactly 160 points, would you chose him now and keep for the season?

That'd be the same points per match as last season (assuming he starts every game), which would probably be slightly more impressive given the bonus changes. I still think I'd start cheaper though, trust myself to make up the points difference elsewhere and then pick him up later in the season maybe

yea, fair enough. im just shocking at picking the right 4.5

like with Raya you can basically guarantee 150 imo, Pope could get close but then alot of popular 4.5s will end up 120-130

is 1mil worth that 30-ish point gain, seems worth it and saves a headache of thinking if you've got the right 4.5 for large parts of the season

at least Raya last season didn't rely too much on bonus take away 3-4 points and his ppg is still very good. just can't see Arsenal's defence falling away with new signing + Timber back. should be as strong as last season, poss even stronger

I do think it is particularly tricky this season, as the goalkeepers have been priced really well. I see the logic, I just think the budget is particularly tight at the start of the season and Arsenal's fixtures aren't great anyway

Fpl towers tried to make this game easy for everybody last season. They got too many complaints of the template being too strong. Pricing is correct now when even AI models are in serious trouble. Isak is the only template pick now.

Many count points for season long dead teams. Raya is goid pick for no SH teams, but is he affordable for the rest of us?

question of how far 0.5/1mil goes in your team vs gk. Raya at 5.5 with 160 points is good value when compared to other positions such as defenders etc

its the peace of mind you get though by picking him, no need to waste FTs on GK or think you've got the wrong one. Arguably enough 6.5-8.5 mids/attackers around with high potential that the 1mil less doesn't hurt too much

Possibly yes, but gk change has usually very low upside. There is always risk of -4 if you have to downgrade your keeper. Naturally, if your gk does >4 pts better than that million used elsewhere, it's a different story.

Raya gained approximately 1 point more than Flekken on average per game. There is merit to pick him. But he will probably be 5.5 come gw6, which might be WC time.

Raya becomes better pick later during the season. Raya + White over Saliba+Gabriel wins it imo. However, that extra million will allow me to have possible 5.5 bandwagon in midfield. ESR, CHO and even one 5.0 has been mentioned. Later with higher TV than likes of Camzy and whoever started this site, premium gk may become s possibility. However, likes of Palmer, Foden, Saka and Son may have something to say.

Unless you wildcard extremely late it is doubtful you will will keep the same keeper all season.

As another poster has said the keepers have been priced cleverly this year (as is the overall pricing).

I struggled to pick two or even one I liked - normally would pick a 4.5//4.0 or 4.5/4.5

But this year I decided to pick 5/5 = Martinez/Pope just for 6 gameweeks then I will likely wildcard. They rotate nice for this period.

Then after that I will get the cheaper "bargains" who emerge for the rest of the season.

I did look at a Raya option alone, but those early fixtures look mixed.
      --
The other way of doing is just get two keepers from the promoted sides stick with them for save points.
The most saves from the cheapest starting keeper last season was Areola.

Maybe not the answer you were looking for but, if Raya got 160 points that means Arsenal kept at least 15 clean sheets, making the defence even more valuable. So no, then I would've gone with White+Gabriel.

Personally I would get Garnacho/Johnson instead of Rashford and then get Porro for Burn.

I like the Kudus pick I have not seen him in any other drafts.

I woulld do this too. Johnson for me. Just not feeling Garnacho at the mo. Wait and see how far up the park he plays. I also like Bailey. Rash is a nono. Porro more or less a midfield mate.

        Probably wrong though.

Porro. Partly because I expect him to smash it this season and be up there with the other premiums next year. And mostly because he's just exciting to own

Wouldn't call it weaker, think I have all mids that I would like to have at start.

          Salah, Son, Odegaard, Gordon

Defense is Gvardiol, Porro, Munoz, Senesi and Harwood Bellis

Easier to do this without Haaland I guess

I think with the many options coming back to reduced mins week 1-2 ( foden, palmer, Watkins etc) and some cheap enables who look to get minutes unexpectedely ( bobb, etc) who are most likely not good longterm,...i think week 3 wildcard is the play and target week1-2

    Im here
    Sel
    Porro Barco Hall
    Salah Jota Son J Murphy
    Haaland Isak Wood

Murphy to Bobb if he is to start week 2, wc week 3 to get balance when the longterm picks are back and possible go without Salah and Haaland

Thanks. As a former bookmaker I have to say he is wrong about the bookies markets being the best source of projected figures. This is because the odds are adjusted massively dependant on money placed on certain markets/selections. For example, players from larger fan bases usually have more money (total) staked on them, therefore their odds are reduced. This massively skews the figures/data from bookies, meaning projected spread betting markets are not a reliable source of data for FPL.

Probably less than all of the above - possible exception of Aina who I don't know that well tbh, but prefer Forest's fixtures. Also a few factors at Everton I'm wary of - Branthwaite's absence, only 45 preseason mins for Tark/Myko, the 442, form...

When I remove Salah I can just play Pope/Saliba/Gabriel/Porro at the back which gives you attacking threat and clean sheets for as long as you like:

I know Salah has great upside and there are some okay 4.5m options but swapping him to Odegaard feels okay and just opens up the back 4 big time.

      Lots of viable options

I think from week 3 there is a viable wildcard team without Salah and Haaland - just need to wait for the Euro players who are good longterm picks to be back

In relation to what i said, this from week 3 when all these players should be back to full shape is frankly crazy, 6 pen takers + Foden

mBeumo can be Rashford from week 4.

        Henderson
        Maatsen Gvardiol White
        Saka Foden Palmer Eze Mbeumo
        Isak Watkins

            Yep

I dont see a standout week for Haaland or Salah alone until possible week 7-9 for Haaland, but possible to get him short-term in there with the rolling transfer

Even week 4 is a toss up who to captain

            For me best captain is
            1: Isak v sou
            2: Haaland v Ipsw
3: Saka / or may punt on Mbeumo v Sou who i think will be whipping boys all year

      TAA, Castagne, Porro, Livramento, Barco.
Livra could be any 4.5 or become Gvardiol but not a fan of City fixtures regarding CS.

    Hot topic right here:

Is it better to select defenders who you think will get clean sheet points, or, go for defenders who you think could get attacking points?

The obvious answer is both, but that’s not always possible. For example, would you choose VDV or Mykolenko ?

    1. Holmes
      • 12 Years

Have more trust in Everton's defense, so Mykolenko imo.

I'm a little confused by the example - equal number of attacking returns last season, but I guess being a CB you're assigning CS to VdV? Tbh the lack of expected CS for Spurs is what puts me off Porro even despite his threat. I would consider Everton a bit more solid but have my doubts about how they'll start.

Generally speaking I am always looking for both. I probably skew a bit more toward attacking threat (e.g. probably going with Leif Davis) since I find CBs with no threat a bit dull & I'd rather rotate the cheap attacking defenders to try to boost their CS odds just by avoiding better attacking opponents.

I try and keep it simple look for defenders based on fixtures who I think can keep clean sheets.

After that I look to see if I can find defenders who can keep clean sheets (based on fixtures) AND who could be an attacking threat.

The third option attacking threat only is when I want to save money/transfers

      Current defenders are -
TAA - Gvardiol - Porro - Barco (Konsa)

If Spurs sign Solanke, I can see him getting 20+. Chance creation isn't an issue for Spurs, but the finishing of Richarlison has been. All hypotheticals at the moment, of course.

Richarlison scored 11 non-pen goals from 9.6 xG last season, while Solanke scored 17 from 17.2 xG, so I'm not sure what you're saying is true. Solanke's appeal is availability.

Not sure if this is a good idea what do you think?

    A. Upgrade 4.5M (Sels) to Pope, downgrade Rogers to Winks.
    B. Downgrade Munoz to 4.5M, upgrade keeper.
    C. Something I have missed? Maybe downgrade Eze?

    Sels
    Gvardiol / Munoz / Robinson
    Salah / Gordon / Nkunku / Eze
    Isak / Haaland / Muniz

    Paulsen | Rogers | Faes | Barco

    Thanks

A rotation of Spurs, Fulham, Brighton and Villa give you these fixtures

    GW1 - lei, eve
    GW2 - EVE, LEI
    GW3 - ips, lei
    GW4 - IPS, EVE

All you need to do is pick a premium defender to fill the 3rd spot

      Love this.
Alternatively you could stick in a £4.5m NFO defender as your 5th and get

      GW1 - lei, eve, BOU
      GW2 - EVE, LEI, sou
      GW3 - ips, lei, WOL
      GW4 - IPS, EVE, WHU

    Trying to squeeze Saka in. It's weak at the back but the front 7 is looking delicious;

    Henderson
    Barco Gvardiol Murillo
    Saka Salah CHO Mbeumo
    Haaland Muniz Isak(c)

    4.0gk - Faes Johnson Winks

Henderson could be Areola and Mbeumo could be Eze.

    Food for thought
