  1. Key principles in FPL

There is a lot of noise out there atm and I think this is the time to really start sifting through it and deciding what your core principles are for your GW1 team and then build a team that reflects them.

So here are my key principles and how my team reflects them.

    1. Cheaper in defense. If last year taught us anything, it's that teams are keeping fewer clean sheets than ever and there are more points to be found in midfield and attack. I've flirted with some TAA drafts and it just doesn't appeal considering the vast number of perfectly decent 4.5m options. Pick one or at most two defender from the top 2 defenses - City/Arsenal and then fill the rest with budget starters. I could be wrong, but for now, this seems a reasonable starting stance. I reserve the right to pivot to more value in defense if players emerge that are bucking the trend - super attacking wingbacks or a big uptick in clean sheets etc.

    2. Pick talismen on pens as the backbone of the team. I was cold on Eze at the start of this preseason admittedly, but he does tick some really important boxes for a GW1 team for me. He's nailed, he's the attacking talisman of CPL and he's on pens. GW1 is when we know the least so it makes sense to have more players that fit this safe criteria that we can rely on. It's also why I'm currently on Salah, Haaland and Isak. That's 4 very reliable and safe options and then that frees you up to take one or two calculated risks to....

    3. Go for value. What gives you an edge in this game is getting on players before they explode and become template. To do this, you have to always be looking for value. To me, the opportunity at the start of GW1 are players like Bobb and Jota who have had a good preseason and can capitalize on the late return of some starters. Sure there's a bit of risk, but the upside is considerable, and you have plenty of options around that price that you can swing to if it doesn't work.

    4. Have backup options. I have 4 very 'safe' options' in Salah, Haaland, Isak, Eze. That leaves me with 3 attacking slots to take some risks while retaining some flexibility in case they don't work. I've worked in Bobb, Son, ESR at present, but they're all in a good place for replacement. Son leaves me a super flexible midfield slot for any of the English premiums who I think jumping to at the right time will define a season (Saka, Foden, Palmer), ESR has really good fixtures and high potential, Bobb has huge upside especially in GW2 and there are lots of 5.0m and 5.5m mids if he doesn't work out.

    5. Don't plan too far ahead. Part of doing well at FPL is accepting that you are going to get things wrong. A lot. So a team that looked promising could unexpectedly have a poor start. If you built a plan around having triple Pool for their good fixtures until GW6 WC, you're gonna fall way behind if you stubbornly stick to an elaborate plan and they underperform. Last year, after watching Man United play against Wolves opening day, it was obvious to me that they were miles off the pace and not ready for the season. I promptly sold Bruno and had 0 United from GW2 and it was a huge factor in my strong start of last season.

    Henderson 4.0
    Saliba Quansah Hall Robinson Barco
    Salah Son Eze ESR Bobb
    Haaland Isak Jebbison

Debating Whether Jota + Havertz/Solanke is better than Son + ESR. Son appeals because it adds to the talisman point but there's an argument that Jota's value potential and Havertz's price flexibility makes them better. Will weigh the risk/reward. I think this draft is very safe to start GW1 with and will in all likelihood get me off to a good start. What I choose to do from this point on is what will decide my season. Being astute and watching the first few games closely to identify potential value early and jump off sinking ships will be key. I think I'm leaning safety with Son to start and then with the intention to make transfers early if need be to jump on the best assets.

I have Quansah and wanted to punt on Bobb, end up I went for Rogers as both Quansah & Bobb are "risky"

Not that Rogers is not risky thou lol

I went for Jota + Solanke instead of Son because there are no good $5m forward worth considering

8th attacker has never mattered to me. It doesn't matter if it's Winks or Jebbison, they will sit bottom of the bench. I'm an active manager so I will never need that player to 'sub on' and therefore that 0.5m is better used in the starting XI for me. My x2 4.5m defenders are perfectly fine as an emergency source of points.

I know some managers baulk at the idea of Bobb as 7th attacker, but rotating him feels even worse to me. You have a Man City attacker, play him every week and if he's no longer any good, sell and go for someone else. There are plenty of choices.

          I'm confuse, isn't Jebbison your 8th attacker?

While I've always gone 343 with absolute fodder on the bench I do think this season presents so many potentially great options at 4.5 for defenders and 5.0 for mids that it's worth finding that extra million to bolster your squad.

And yet... someone could have these set of principles:

        1. Have strong bench depth in case of injuries.
        2. Cover all the big teams.
        3. Make sure high ownership players don't hurt you early on.
        4. Stick to a wildcard plan in GW4/6 and try to roll as many FTs as possible.
        5. Pick attacking defenders because that's the only way to score points in defense when there aren't many CSs.

        And then end up with:

        Raya 4.0
        TAA Gvardiol Porro Robinson Barco
        Saka Gordon Eze Rogers Nkunku
        Haaland Isak Muniz

Which is a radically different team to mine and yet still very much valid. I think that draft above is quite similar to what Az/Mark have and I think it's just as valid. Just built on different principles.

Never mate - I've never understood when there's millions playing the game why people take random advice from 4 or 5 other posters to decide their teams - without any reason behind their choices

They don't want advice though, they want you to agree with them, which is why the majority don't respond to critiques or simply tell you they 'feel' this player will actually do well.

You can believe what you want about 'ego'.

But I found it helpful to write that out just for myself. And if it managed to help other people think about what ground rules they should base their FPL decisions on, great.

I find it more interesting to think about FPL in a larger macro form than in the endless RMTs and that can help you make decisions when you're unsure. Does my team cohere to what I believe will happen this year in FPL and if not, what combination of players would get me closer to that ideal?

It's funny, you are one of the most incisive and eloquent posters here, and I don't often agree with you.

With that said, you have a better record than me, so maybe I should agree with you more XD

On this note, I wanted to offer a counterpoint to 1.) above. I understand the logic, I just think it's a bit like the running back position in NFL fantasy. They are a an absolute pain but you usually have to play at least two, so why not pay up and get the ones you know are difference-makers?

So in this example, if you think your defenders, of whom you need to play at least three, are not going to get many clean sheets, you are still paying probably an absolute minimum of £13.5 for three players who are likely to get 2/3 points most weeks. With that in mind, considering the fact you can upgrade baseline to premium players who have attacking potential for £1.5-£2m each, isn't it worth doing so?

It is a question of making a leaner more streamlined team and putting value where the points are imo. Squeezing value wherever possible is just good FPL because it opens more doors further down the line. What I mean by that is that it's easy to fluff up and put money for marginal gains where a more focused approach would do better.

        Let me give an example...

4.0 > Henderson (why not, it's just 0.5m and I get another starting keeper just in case he gets injured)
Porro > Van de Ven (it's just 1m and I get a Spurs attacking wingback rather than just CB)
Rogers > Winks (it's 0.5m more for a better backup option that will most likely not even play before WC1)

That's 2m I'd argue that's been 'fattened' rather than being really targeted spend. That 2m you save by going for the cheaper options can be the difference between Odegaard and Palmer. As the season goes on, these 'fattening' moves will seriously start to hinder your entire squad when you move the pieces around. Suddenly combinations like Jota + Solanke become Eze + Muniz and this stacks up and adds up over the season. You can't see it directly, but it affects your squad's overall flexibility.

Two key principles for me, don’t a must have but strong preference if feasible.

      1. Own the most expensive player in each outfield position to begin with so that I can immediately get to any player in the game if it feels essential

      2. If a decision is close, pick the player you are happier to cheer irl. Chances are you won’t win fpl so maximise the fun along the way , more fun not having to cheer against your own teams success if you can avoid it. Not saying I avoid rival players but it might decide a close decision between 2 players

I can see the argument that Clean Sheets will decline with extra time & more attacking football being played.

But, let's see a trend develop before we declare the Clean Sheet dead & gone.

      > 5. Don't plan too far ahead.

"Plans are useless, planning is invaluable."

So, variance isn't a reason to avoid continuous mid to longer term strategizing.

Having a 3/6/8 GW plan in mind is crucial for success.

I recall the Salah or Jota debates that we were both engaged in this time last season, at which time I recall you very much in the Jota camp. I meanwhile was wavering and having very nearly jumped on Jota decided to stick with Mo.....it paid off, while Jota owners were left licking their wounds after the first few gw's. Having said that we find ourselves on different sides of the fence with me in the Jota camp. Yes its a risk, but the new format of the game this season sets it up nicely to go with more of an attacking strategy from the off, so I think Jota's a worthy risk, and If I need to wc a few games in then so be it.

Last season was the first time he didn’t score on the opening day and still got an assist against Chelsea

I know - I'm saying it's not really a 'trend' because it's just a good player playing crap teams. I don't doubt Salah is likely to score on Saturday (or whenever they play) but it won't be because it's their first match of the season - it'll be because he's a good player in a good team playing Ipswich, and that's all there is to it.

Possibly but that could be argument for someone who is known to keep himself in great shape over the summer hitting the ground running against a team not just adjusted to the change in level.

There’s a logic you could see that means you shouldn’t completely disregard the potential it’s actually a trend.

I’d say if there was ever a repeatable trend the early weeks of a season would be it. Somewhat like why teams that score lots of 80+ mins goals isn’t necessarily a fluke

People love looking at history like this when it’s mostly meaningless.

The stat used to be “always scores on opening day” until he didn’t. Now it’s “… against promoted sides.”

Next season it’ll be “… at home” or something.

I take your point. Although in Salah’s case for multiple seasons now there’s been a real drive each pre season to argue why he’s non essential even though year on year he proves he’s the definition of essential.

So I think in his case, the desire to argue the outcome rather than the evidence works both ways

There really is so much talent to choose from this year in FPL. The midfield especially is absolutely stacked. I've started going through the expensive options to see who should be in my team...

Foden - Hasn't kicked a ball in pre season
Palmer - Has only had 45 mins
Son - Is Solanke good enough cover for Spurs?
Saka - The main one I'm struggling with if I go Salah/Norwegian robot
Gordon - Has only had 45 mins
Eze - Has only had 60 mins

So I'm currently on this draft...

    Flekken 4.0m
    Saliba Munoz Hall Barco Harwood
Salah Bruno F Kamada ESR 5.0m
    Solanke Haaland Isak

For future reference you might want to work on your formatting, because this is an absolute eyesore at the moment. I'm also not a massive fan of the team, I have to say. I've gotten a bit cold on Palmer (pun intended) as pre-season has gone on because of the terrible start they've made under Maresca and the low amount of minutes he's had; KDB is a no-go for me from a minutes perspective; I don't see the point of spending .5 million more than you need to on a keeper who'll realistically be sitting on your bench all season; and I also think you've gone a little too light in defence: I'd prefer to have some more flexibility in there, rather than being stuck on 4 4.5s for a good few gameweeks. That said, it could all go well, and I don't think there are any objectively bad picks in there on an individual basis. Good luck for the season!

Thanks, it's the 1st time I've posted but I appreciate your point. I put KDB to try and cover the haaland threat and foden probably not starting GW1, maybe I should just get haaland. I remember a few years back reading a Reddit FPL page about Southampton from a fan of the team, and they were so convincing in their arguments about the squad I ended up starting with triple Saints. Naturally they were woeful.

It reminds me of Az on FPL Blackbox going on and on about Barco and Minteh. There's no question these players could be good, but the confidence is unfounded as of now. Could easily be worth 3.8 and 5.3 respectively by GW5.

    1. x.jim.x

Barco is basically just the best 4.0 option, if you need one for your team. Starting games and avoiding price drops until you wildcard should be owners' expectations. I think Minteh will have a great season (a lot of hype around him) but there first few games are tricky, so it's easy enough to just wait and see.

Do we really think TAA is worth 1.5 over Porro? Especially knowing defenders need attacking returns and clean sheets to get more bonus points?

With that extra 1.5 you can upgrade your keeper to Raya or your 6.5 to a Jota etc

The opening fixtures make it worth the risk. If there's a run where he can outscore Porro or the Arsenal defenders I think it's now. Easy to hop off after the first 5-8 weeks if Pool don't look good.

      You’ve asked two questions really.

      1. On best 4.5m GK I don’t there is a true standout, I’ve gone Sanchez for now but is variable

      2. I think those who have actually done the stats show that whilst the bps changes will change the number of bps (ie the underlying number) quite a bit it doesn’t actually across the season change who gets the 3,2,1 all that much. Very few players would have seen an increase / decrease in bonus points of more than 5 last season (so essentially one clean sheet or goal)

Eze always looks involved and never far away from attacking return with pens and set-pieces. extra .5 seals the deal

Thoughts on this Salah and Haaland draft?

    Henderson
    TAA Gvardiol Hall
    Salah Jota Gordon Bobb
    Haaland Isak Pedro

    Matthews Barco Bergvall Harwood-Bellis

A few risky picks I know but will likely wildcard early and fancy the potential upside in the first few weeks

Looks like it should be over budget, so you've done well there.

      Only concern would be Pedro
Wellbeck banging them in so he may be on the wing
Also Evan will take mins when fit
      But he’s a good price.
I have Solanke instead but don’t have Trent
      That’s the compromise really

      This is good.
Maybe Murphy + Solanke is even better than Gordon + Pedro.

      I’d change Turner
