First of all, congratulations to Crystal Palace (and their supporters, such as our own Crunchie and Glasner Ball) on their first-ever major trophy success – ignoring the 1990/91 Zenith Data Systems Cup.

Us being the Buzz Killingtons that we are, our first thought is about the possible implications of the Eagles’ 1-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley.

More specifically, the race for eighth.

IF MAN CITY HAD WON THE FA CUP…

Had Pep Guardiola’s side won the FA Cup, eighth place in the Premier League would have been enough for UEFA Conference League football.

The top five (and one of Tottenham Hotspur/Manchester United) would have qualified for the UEFA Champions League, with positions sixth and seventh heading through to the UEFA Europa League.

We’re assuming, for the purposes of this example and to avoid getting too bogged down in extraneous detail, that Newcastle United finish in the top six.

NOW THAT PALACE HAVE WON…

The Eagles, 12th in the Premier League, have now nabbed one of the Europa League spots (Nathaniel Clyne, coming to an airport near you) as a result of their FA Cup success.

So only sixth in the Premier League will get Europa League football, with seventh heading for the Conference League.

Whoever finishes in eighth gets nothing.

Unless…

HOW EIGHTH PLACE CAN STILL GET EUROPE…

So far as we understand it, there is one just-about-plausible scenario that could yet see eighth place get Conference League football.

This would hinge on Chelsea finishing seventh and winning this season’s Conference League final against Real Betis. That’s on Wednesday 28 May, three days after the Premier League season ends.

Conference League success is rewarded with a spot in next season’s Europa League.

So, in this situation, positions 1-5 (plus Spurs/Man Utd) would qualify for the Champions League, with Palace, the sixth-place Premier League team and Conference League winners Chelsea in the 2025/26 Europa League.

That would mean eighth place does, after all, get Conference League football next season.

For any of this to still be possible, Nottingham Forest have to beat Chelsea in their Gameweek 38 clash. Even if that happens, Aston Villa and Newcastle also have to finish above the Blues (a point apiece will do it).

WHO IS IN THE RUNNING FOR EIGHTH?

Two teams are still in the running for eighth: Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford.

Fulham and Bournemouth dropped out of the running after Gameweek 37.

WHY DOES IT MATTER IN FPL?

Having Conference League football (or not) to play for may have little bearing on how Brentford and Brighton fare on the final day.

Motivated to perform? Unshackled by any pressure concerning finishing position? The ‘something/nothing to play for’ narrative can be spun either way.

You would, however, assume the managers of those respective clubs would go full strength with their line-ups in Gameweek 38 with European football to play for. Without that, there may be more of a concern over ‘expected minutes’.

Probably not even Pep knows that right now, TBOS83. Bournemouth would seem to be more suited to his skillset than Southampton but today's minutes, Marmoush's mental state after he missed a pen etc may all be factors.

No jam from KDB, he surely gets at least a cameo in his farewell Etihad game. Munoz has a chance of not starting but then. Then it’s a even smaller chance of him not coming on from the bench

The other unlikely scenario for 8th to get European spot that has been deliberately been excluded from this article would require Chelsea finishing 6th, and Newcastle 7th in the PL

For that to happen Forest would need to win both of their remaining games, and Newcastle lose both of theirs plus a goal difference advantage of 3 to Chelsea (despite them losing to Forest), and City and Villa would also need to get at least 2 and 1 points from their remaining fixtures.

Good observation alright. The KDB/Haaland dynamic (ball over or through to him) worked when they played together. Unfortunately limited due to KDB (and Haaland) injuries.

Whatever about Champions League; I don't think it will reward either club with benefits next season, other than bringing in cash, which is satisfactory for shareholders, but not fans or staff.

Both clubs need a reset. They don't seem to be about football.

I totally agree but it’s sickening to think shareholders are being rewarded for either team performing like they did and then get the financial rewards that go with qualifying when you think the Villa or other teams that were close will lose out

Yes, I'd agree with that statement. I certainly would have preferred to see the likes of Villa (or other deserved club based on PL performance) go through. I have to admit that I don't know a lot about Villa historically. I understand they were/are a huge club with a massive loyal fan base. I'll do a bit of research in the summer. Any links?

Ben Crellin, who hasn't taken a transfer hit all season, and obviously prioritises points over £, has a Squad value £103.2m & £0.9m itb.

I would say your TV is unexceptional.

My squad: TV £107.1M. Selling Value £105.2M.
Some early transfers and hits in 2024; zero hits and latish transfers 2025. TV £108.1 peak GW34. Money wasn't critical this season.

      107.3m here
Hasn't really mattered as much this season tbh, given the weakness of other premiums into season end

Not that it matters this season, but yours is quite low.

If you want a very high one, it's a combination of:
      (a) getting popular in form players into your team who will rise (and taking out the out of form ones who are falling), and sometimes taking hits to get in form players in, even if your team might not need them

      (b) keeping track of players rises and falls on fplstatistics or equivalent sites and risking early transfers

      (c) being wary about transferring out players who have gained in price a lot

      105.2 if I x everyone out.

      Few reasons:
      1. I do pay attention to price rises, if I think I will be priced out, I will do the move early
      2. I do early moves most of the time. I think your opinion gets swayed the more time which passes, so I normally make moves before the current gameweek is even over. I have already done one for 38 already for example (Rogers in).
      3. I have maintained a playing bench for a large period of the season, so I have essentially been using all 15 positions to gave value, where as those without a bench only had 11 really.
      4. I mainly focus on fixtures, so I have a good idea who I will want in 2/3 weeks time, barring injury. In quite a few cases, I would get in a player a week or two before I actually needed them, just because I knew I would make money from it and want them in the future anyway.

Despite all that said, money in FPL is not the most important factor to me, I won't make bad decisions just because of money. I got lucky with injuries, no early transfer went wrong.

105.5. I haven't even tried. I think it mainly came from dumping Haaland early.

105.8, made some early transfers in the 1st half of the season but on the whole, waited for information.

105.1 (104.7m + 0.4) with only one transfer made more than an hour from the GW deadline all season.

I didnt pay any attention to price rises and my TV was 104.7 by GW15, 107.2 GW 33.
The whole game is get the players who score the points, preferably early, and then when others jump on the wagon you get the rises.

Congrats to all palace fans and am thrilled for you all. Delighted for glasner and what a manger he has proved to be for palace. Great team and losing Zaha and olise and still producing these results is more impressive than Liverpool winning the league(I’m a pool fan). Some great players in that team

Oh man, only just seen it was completely Haaland's decision to hand over the penalty. Crikey.

I don't think its that big of a deal, other than it being missed. Haaland perhaps thought that Henderson would have studied his pens and may predict which way he goes? Its likely Henderson would have done that. So giving it to Marmoush who does have a good penalty record (I think), was just to throw off Henderson.

If you're a top striker, as he is, you take the penalty. All the former strikers in the studio were dead set on that! Seems mental, surely had a slight worry about form or something.

If that was trying to be clever he got that completely wrong given Hendo's post-match presser.

Feels like such a strange risk when he usually takes them.

Do I remember a City PK where Pep's normal taker handed it off to somebody working on a hatty?

IDK, it is strange I agree. Just playing devil's advocate. Maybe he thought because he was out injured for ages that Marmoush deserved to score the pen in the final? :d

Only haaland knows. Doesn't bother me too much as an owner, not expecting much anyway

Isak not worth a hit - though looking at your team there are a few FT options including A.

Some have suggested I get another Arsenal mid, though my default move is Mateta > Evanilson or perhaps get a Bournemouth mid.

I thought about arsenal mid but stuck with triple defense already, so I'd need a hit for that
Kiwior + Sarr > Kerkez + Martinelli for a hit and bench Rogers
              Yes or No?

I've always thought that he would and come off for the ovation, which I think most Pool fans will want to give him, if not all. Absolutely no evidence for this thought, just my own hunch.

Trent ain’t sittin’ on no bench, son — he’s stompin’ mudholes and walkin’ ‘em dry from the opening bell. You want a pretty boy to warm the pine? Call somebody else. You want a no-nonsense, hell-raisin’, glass-shatterin’ S.O.B. to raise hell from the jump? You start Trent, and that’s all I got to say about that — gimme a hell yeah!

I think we will still want to push for top half of the table while still mathematically possible (£3m per position still a lot for us) so don't think we going to rotate too much. He is in great form for sure 🙂

Eze... he’s locked in. Playing with clarity, confidence—like he sees the game two steps ahead. Anfield won’t be kind, no... but red shirts don’t scare him.
You could pivot to Saka—safe, efficient, logical. But Eze? He’s the kind of player who changes the game, not just survives it.
Trust the form. Trust the fire.
        Engage.
