Following our look at the (generally unappealing) £4.0m budget options, let’s continue analysing Fantasy Premier League (FPL) defenders by picking out the best that cost exactly £5.0m.

In our position-by-position guides, we’ll analyse the main players fighting to make managers’ opening squads.

OVERVIEW

FPL price change predictions: Who will rise + fall on February 28?

£5.0m could be seen an awkward price point. It’s stuck between the premium big-hitters and a huge number of £4.5m teammates that managers hope will provide better value.

Even so, last season saw two major successes begin at this price. Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) and Marc Cucurella (£6.0m) finished fifth and seventh best amongst all FPL defenders, totalling 142 and 133 points.

Tyrick Mitchell (£5.0m) did well but was overshadowed by his right-sided Crystal Palace equivalent. No defender accrued more penalty area touches (112), shots on target (14) or expected goals (xG, 4.93) than Munoz, yet Cucurella outdid him when it came to goals (five).

Three of the Chelsea man’s final seven home games were a 15-point haul.

Elsewhere, Ibrahima Konate (£5.5m) was part of the champions’ first-choice backline, while it’s recently been revealed that James Tarkowski (£5.5m) would have been the biggest recipient of defensive contribution (DC) points had they been around. Nobody exceeded his 10.8 DC actions per match.

This time, we currently have 29 players tagged at £5.0m.

Let’s have a look at the best options first before rounding up the rest.

Vitalii Mykolenko + Jake O’Brien

Everton v Southampton team news:

For £0.5m less than Tarkowski, you can get one of these Everton teammates. Not that either came close to his hypothetical 44 extra points; instead, they would’ve received 14 and six of them.

In fairness to O’Brien, he only really entered the fray once David Moyes took charge, finding time to score two goals in 17 starts.

As for left-back Mykolenko, he grabbed eight, eight and nine points in the season’s final three outings.

Whichever you prefer, it certainly seems wise to buy some sort of Toffee, as only three teams conceded fewer goals (44) and they get to face Leeds United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United during the first half-dozen Gameweeks.

Ola Aina + Neco Williams

FPL notes: Wood hits winner + Forest's fine defence 1

Similarly, an ideal FPL squad would have managers on Nikola Milenkovic (£5.5m) and Murillo (£5.5m). The Serbian bagged five goals, while the Brazilian DC magnet was up near Tarkowski with 10.5 actions per match.

These would’ve ended as the highest-scoring defenders had this new points method been in play, because Nottingham Forest kept 13 clean sheets and conceded the second-fewest big chances (72). It took them to the verge of a shock Champions League qualification.

Even if Nuno Espirito Santo’s side regresses slightly, the prospect of being against Brentford, West Ham, Burnley and Sunderland in the first six matches feels irresistible.

FPL 2025/26: Best fixtures for the new season 1

Additionally, Aina was actually the position’s league leader up until Gameweek 23, fading slightly in later months.

On the opposite side, it took a while for Williams to start consistently. But, from Gameweek 16 onwards, he accumulated the second-most shots (26) and fifth-most points (89) of all defenders.

Given tat

Levi Colwill

FPL in 5 minutes: All you need to know about Gameweek 22 1

Breaking Forest hearts on the final day was Colwill, whose winner took Chelsea up to fourth place. It’s something they’ve built upon during successful post-season run-outs in America and, if the Blues start well, they could be a serious threat this season.

After all, none of their opening six are rated as difficult on our Season Ticker.

FPL 2025/26: Best fixtures for the new season 3

England international Colwill was the Chelsea defence’s most frequent 2024/25 starter, though there’s fierce competition throughout the squad, which could worsen if Jorrel Hato arrives from Ajax.

Trevoh Chalobah (£5.0m) and Malo Gusto (£5.0m) are identically priced but, at this juncture, much less assured of game-time than Colwill.

Maxence Lacroix

3pm team news: Eze starts, Wood returns + Wolves unchanged

While the aforementioned Mitchell remains at £5.0m, he now has competition from the same-priced Borna Sosa (£5.0m). So maybe Lacroix is the one to pursue.

Under the radar last time, he ended as the biggest xG underachiever of all defenders (-2.46). The arrival from Wolfsburg was his position’s number three for headed shots (20) and, of all outfielders, the second-best at set play efforts (27).

Palace clean sheets picked up as the season progressed, as Lacroix averaged 9.9 DC actions per match. He would’ve collected another 34 points.

Admittedly, the Eagles’ early fixtures are mixed. But finding a good rotation partner could make the Frenchman an appealing long-term pick.

Nathan Collins

Which Brentford players to own from FPL Gameweek 6? 5

When combining an overhaul of key players and the risky promotion of Keith Andrews into his first senior management role, it’s hard to fully back Brentford right now. This is despite a strong schedule that ranks second on our Fixture Ticker up to Gameweek 6.

Still, the most-selected goalkeeper is their new signing Caoimhin Kelleher (£4.5m). Whereas for half a million more, you get a centre-back fresh from two goals and seven assists, the sixth-best defender for big chances (six).

Collins was the sole outfielder to play every single minute of 2024/25, ruling out any rotation threat.

Plus, the 6ft 4in talent brought in a good number of DC points. That extra 32 would have put him on a final tally of 159, the fifth-best.

Teammate Keane Lewis-Potter (£5.0m) is one to perhaps swerve for now but keep on the watchlist. With Rico Henry (£4.5m) and Aaron Hickey (£4.0m) back fit, there is plenty of competition at left-back. Lewis-Potter did feature ‘out of position’ on the left wing on Friday, though, so that’s a situation to keep an eye on.

THE LESS DESIRABLES

FPL Gameweek 20 tips: Best players, predicted line-ups, team news + more

Meanwhile, a lot of the other £5.0m picks are either back-ups or hard-to-call assets of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United.

Oleksandr Zinchenko (£5.0m) almost certainly won’t start for the Gunners. Conor Bradley (£5.0m), Kostas Tsimikas (£5.0m) and Joe Gomez (£5.0m), in that order in likelihood of starting, are not assured of sustained game-time. Rico Lewis (£5.0m), Vitor Reis (£5.0m) and Nico O’Reilly (£5.0m), even more so at Manchester City.

Tino Livramento (£5.0m) or Dan Burn (£5.0m) are potential targets once the Magpies’ fixtures improve, but they do have Champions League football to deal with. Burn was Newcastle’s top defender for DC points (22) last season. Livramento should get the nod over Kieran Trippier (£5.0m), although Sven Botman‘s (£5.0m) return to fitness casts some doubt over Burn. Avoid for now and reassess later.

Elsewhere, Illia Zabarnyi (£5.0m) and Cristian Romero (£5.0m) are being tentatively linked with moves away. The latter is more likely to stay, but Tottenham Hotspur teammates Destiny Udogie (£4.5m) and Micky van de Ven (£4.5m) are cheaper.

Across London, Fulham’s summer quietness gives off an underwhelming vibe. Not that any defender came close to Antonee Robinson‘s (£5.0m) 10 assists last season. Whisper it quietly but he was also the leading full-back for DC points (22) in 2024/25.

One very much to consider from Gameweek 10:

Finally, Manchester United defenders – and their £5.0m trio of Noussair Mazrouai, Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt – won’t be high up on shopping lists with Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea up in the first five Gameweeks. With Martinez still working his way back from injury and Ayden Heaven (£4.0m), Luke Shaw (£4.5m), Leny Yoro (£4.5m) and Harry Maguire (£4.5m) alternatives to the other two, there aren’t even assurances over minutes.

FPL Marc Broadcaster, writer and overthinker. Hoping that ‘differential potential’ will catch on.

Reclassified to mid and on pens, but I don't get it tbh.
      Prefer McNeil for .5 less

Everton have pretty decent opening fixtures so filling one of your cheap spots with an Everton attacker is pretty appealing. Ndiaye is probably overly-popular, but he is not a bad pick by any means, especially since he got reclassified as a mid. I don't think those new defensive changes to the game will benefit Ndiaye a great deal, but they might make him a bit more appealing than previously, especially as he can also score.

With uncertainty about who will lead the attack at Everton, Beto or Barry, it only really leaves you Ndiaye or McNeil left to consider.

Disagree - the new defensive changes will benefit Ndiaye sufficiently to make him comparable to £7M mids judging from last season's performance - he made a lot of recoveries. Someone calculated +24 DC from 33 matches last season.

Nope, that was Holmes saying he didn't have great stats. My only comment was "172 recoveries over the season, 19th in the league for that stat." which included players from all positions.

this looks a standard Everton pre-season from the outside, despite new stadium and new manager. Fans seem pretty disgruntled and they always, always start slow since what feels like 2013 when Barkley and Coleman were smashing it up at Carrow Road

      1. have you seen cyan
        • 6 Years

        Yea, Everton normally do start slow. There's normally a Pickford hate cycle for about 12 weeks. It normally goes like this;

        1. People get Pickford, because they look at his overall points from last season, and think he is a bargain.
        2. Everton fail to keep a CS for about 10-12 weeks, Pickford owners are raging
        3. Pickford owners finally yeet him out of their team
        4. Everton then go on a run of CSs and Pickford becomes word class

        xD

You need to to try and time it. I haven't checked Everton's fixtures, but there is a fixture swing around GW13 where I might play my WC. I'll probably just get Pickford in then for set and forget.

Eze and Palace do something similar too. They seem to start off slow then get really good late in the season. Eze seems like the ultimate troll at the beginning, looking great every game, but failing to score as if he has been cursed.

Eze's goal stats were shocking last season, most people probably forgot or didn't notice, but by the time it was GW30, he only had 2 league goals. I remember looking at when Palace were finding some form.

I see Eze scored today, the trap is being set.

Yeah I know mate, just reflected over it since i consider Eze in from GW1. He has so much potiential, with his quality and routes to points, to be a season keeper, but palace are slow starters. Always!

Yea, once again with Eze. You can probably time his form based on how few goals he has. When I saw he only had 2 goals at GW30 or whatever it was, I remember thinking, he is surely going to go on a run here and to get his goal tally up. But I already had double Palace, and it looked like they there were losing form a bit, so I didn't get him, wish I had, because he then did go on a little run to get a respectable tally in the end.

I highly doubt he only has 2 goals that late in the season however this time.

Mateta and Munoz got me so many points last season. I had both from GW21 or round abouts there for 12 weeks or longer and they just kept hauling.

Highly likely Eze is wearing Red & White. With the Gyokeres deal done, Arsenal are now talking with Palace to get the Eze deal done.
Palace are reportedly close to signing forward/winger Evann Guessand from Nice, so he could perhaps be an Eze replacement.

Yea, he will go to Arsenal over Spurs. And frankly, who would blame him.

As a Spurs fan, they can have him. Guy had two goals by GW30 last season. So I don't really want to spend 65mil or something on a player who can't finish his dinner until the dying weeks of the season. Eze is one of the most over-rated players in the league IMO.

I agree and I'm a Palace fan. The guy from France sounds like a decent player. Eze has never been consistent, he looked good playing alongside Olise. Without Olise to take the pressure off him he struggled to create.

I mean it was arguably the last 10 game weeks and the two before that he was returning from injury, that’s several months of being the best player and he’s still scoring now so can hardly not finish his dinner and Olise has been nowhere to be seen in that period. Where would he play at Arsenal? I don’t rate Martinelli or Madueke so I’m guessing in their place, Eze Gyokeres Saka looks lovely.

Eze has always been like that. Its like he realises in the last 1/3 of the season that his goal tally is garbage, so he finally decides to pull his finger out.

He is a highlight reel player, and will never be anything more. I hope Arsenal spunk 65 mil + on him, and they probably will.

                        Are you kidding WVA?
In 2023/24 with Olise, 24 games 11 goals 5 assists (1.5 goal contributions per game) 2024/25 without Olise 31 games 8 goals 8 assists (0.5 cpg)
Olise in his first season with Bayern, 34 games 12 goals 15 assists (1.25 cpg) UCL 14 games 5 goals 2 assists.

Olise is a far superior player to Eze and always will be.

I have one theory. In February teams that play in Europe are fatigued and some have injury crisis. Promoted teams also have physical and mental issues. They have tried their best, it's not enough and they don't have legs either. This gives edge to Everton and CP, but possibly at least Whu starts to improve also. Or other teams just simply get worse 🙂

You have to admit he has a point though? 😀 You’ve had a good window still, mate. If it leaves you with money for Eze instead, it could work out for the best yet

lol, its not been a good window. Levy being a tight as usual. Its so dumb he didn't just offer 63mil or something for MGW in the first place and they would have no choice but to accept, instead, he apparently offered the exact money and the payment terms stated in the NDA, so its obvious it was leaked. I think the exact amount was 60,125,000.

I don't particularly want Eze, but he would improve us. I highly doubt we would sign him anyway, I'd give it about a 10% chance at best.

The fact we wasted two weeks on MGW and haven't actively pursued anyone is beyond stupid.

We need about 4 signings and to unload some garbage players no one wants. Players like Rich need to get out.

Tels is just another garbage signing too btw. Following the standard Spurs model of signing mediocre players.

Tels did feel like a very weird one 😆 I’m not sure what they saw in the loan spell that made them think, ‘yeah, well have some more of that’. I thought some of the other incomings/outgoings had looked OK but interesting to get a Spurs fan’s take on it - thanks!

Danso and Kudus are good singings, but we need a lot more and to ship out at least 4 players, including Son who either needs to go, or at the minimum, be stripped of captaincy. Luckily it looks like LAFC actually want Son. Not sure if we will be able to sell Son though, we have to have him for our Asian pre-season tour.

Lucas Perri can punch a ball 55 yards. Imagine Pickford going up for a corner in the 94th minute at Elland Road and Perri accidentally catching him instead of the ball. Something all football fans can enjoy collectively

Pretty happy with landing on this for the start of the season, like the balance of this team:

            Sanchez (Valdimarsson)
            Aina Colwill Udogie (Konsa, Esteve)
            Salah Palmer Rogers Reijnders Arias
            Haaland Larsen (Kroupi)

Arias and Reijnders are the punts that make Salah-Palmer-Haaland work. Expecting Reijnders to tick along in the Gundogan role and pop up with goals and assists every now and then, he was splitting defenses with his passing in pre season and he put up great numbers in the Serie A albeit from a more attacking position. Not convinced that he’s going to be as prone to rotation as the other midfielders as he’s exactly what City have needed in midfield. I’m really high on Arias from what I watched at the CWC and Wolves have looked really good since Pereira took over. Not super convinced by Udogie or Konsa for that matter but not very tempted by anyone else at 4.5.

If Isak goes to Liverpool it’ll be hard not to swap Haaland out and upgrade the defense, but I expect Haaland to light the season up early on with the creative talent around him. Doesn’t feel good starting without Joao Pedro/Wirtz with their % ownership but you can’t fit everyone and I don’t mind the value of Rogers and Larsen based on what they did last season.

                You'll hate my defence then, 3x 4.5s and 2x 4.0's 😀

I don't think CS's are that forthcoming early on in the season. I'd rather put the money in attack and find the best attacking 4.5s.

There will probably some premium defenders who do well at the start, but not sure it will balance out.

Here is my team btw as we both have triple premiums:

              Kelleher - Vald
Konsa - Udog - De Cupyher - Hickey - Esteve
              Salah - Palmer - Rogers - 6 or 6.5 - Miley
              Haaland - Strand - Welbeck

Pretty set on the attack, the defence will change a fair bit though based on pre-season.

Yea. My defence probably does need an extra 0.5 at least. But we'll see what pre-season shows. If I can get 5 starters, all of which have attacking threat, then I'll be happy with that.

Do you need one? Keeper injuries aren't that common and keeper rotation never works. Only need one IMO when planning to BB. A waste of 0.5 imo.

While I am indeed easily pleased I will say I don’t think there’s any reason to rotate with Sanchez at 5.0 when the 0.5 necessary for an upgrade pays off more in other areas

draft #billion here. avoiding the big possession clubs for the DEFCON. i want Watkins but can't find a way to make it work, and i'm feeling stubborn about Bruno being worth it.

              Kelleher / 4.0
Tarkowski (if fit) / Neco Williams / AWB / Richards / Esteve

Looks good. I'd prefer Wood, Mateta or Wissa to Solanke.

This interface is actually insane. Instead of a drop-down menu you need to move over to the right to select the filter.

Expensive web designers need to justify their appointment, so they change things that don't need changing, and in this case, make it dramatically worse.

I suspect the useless web designers are also why the game was released so late. The dumbest thing about the changes is that they have optimised the site for use on mobile devices, when they have already have an app for mobile users.

There is no logic or reason behind the changes, both the web designers and the people at FPL who signed off on these changes honestly need to go and find new jobs, because they have no clue what they are doing. Even someone with no experience in web designer can see how bad it is.

If you want to draft teams, use this: https://fpl.team/

You can even save multiple drafts.

Np. It obviously isn't linked to your actual FPL account. But if you want to play around with teams and save them etc, use that, its much quicker and easier then the official FPL site.

I tried using the Filters button on the Transfers (to the left of the players button) to see if it helped. I imagined you could set all the filters at once, to save a bit of faff. Amazingly you CAN'T, it only lets you set one filter! Ridiculous waste of time.

And another thing. The list of teams in the player list shows a big team badge (as well as the team name) which is no help but makes the list taller so you have to scroll even further.

auto pick default may contribute to early ownership % - unless you mean in RMTs in which case I don't know, fixtures?

Maybe fixtures, yeah. I’ve seen him in a lot of RMTs on here. Certainly couldn’t be on last years’ form you’d think!

The main thinking is that Frank can turn water into wine and turn Solanke from a useless striker into a decent one.

Will Gyökeres be the next Haaland or rather more like Núñez?

I mean in terms of scoring and making an immediate impact. Not so much in terms of changing the spelling of his name or his haircut.

Lol, harsh, but funny and true.

Isak is an elite striker though. If Pool sign him, they will be the best team in the world without any doubt.

Probably in between? You’d think with the chance creation at Arsenal and his finishing record the last few years he’d get to at least 12 goals and maybe up to 18?

I think he’ll still share time with Havertz though.

I hope that Arteta finds a system to fit in both players.

Havertz had his best time when playing as a hybrid 9/10. If Gyökeres ays upfront, Havertz could drop back supported by Saka on the right and Mandueke on the left, and with Rice and Odegaard behind.

However, there are so many other good and yound players, so rotation and limited minutes are most likely for both.

I still think he’s a big risk. Scored lots of goals in Portugal .. but that league is ranked lower than the Championship. He’s never been tested in a top league.

                  That's why I thought Nunez.

On the other hand, he might explode with Odegaard and Saka providing assists. He is quite tall and fast, but we shall see.

Looked the part in Champions League. Don't really see him hitting the levels of Haaland's first season, or the lows of Nuñez, but it's not really saying much to place him in between the two. I'd guess something like 18-20 league goals if he gets a full season / not too much rotation

Back 4 of VanDijk Murillo Lacroix WanBissaka is locked in for me I think. WanBissaka plays easy teams in the very tough fixtures for Murillo/Lacroix. Could also just play Murillo/Lacroix for the probable DC points.

Not guaranteed. They have also signed Kyle Walker-Peters. But, you'd expect that KWP is there to cover Afcon when both AWB and Diouf will be away, and for general back-up. I think KWP has had long enough now in the league to prove that he is frankly not good enough but maybe West Ham see things differently.

Diouf will be a massive differential as things stand.

Think I've built a pretty solid BB1 team here.

              Verbruggen Areola
AWB Udogie van Hecke Dalot Konsa
              Maddison Mitoma Salah Rice Rogers
              Haaland Beto Pedro

              How's it looking?

I might have answered you yesterday, so apologies if I did and I am repeating myself.

                1. Beto is a minutes risk - I'd replace him with Strand ideally, or at least Welbeck.
                2. Maddison is a pretty random pick, and feels like a stab in the dark to have a differential. I wouldn't go there personally unless he shows some form in pre-season.
                3. Udogie is probably a bit of a trap IMO. I know he was quite attacking the other day, and Porro played deeper. But I wouldn't read too much into that, its just Frank seeing what the players can do and what options he has.

I am not convinced Spurs will start well. They have Burnley in GW1 which probably makes them seem more attractive. But firstly its Spurs, and secondly, promoted teams normally start quite strong. Burnley drawing with Spurs in GW1 will not surprise me in the slightest. Spurs had a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers, and then a 0-0 draw with Luton yesterday.

Madders has always been a solid FPL pick, only held back by minutes that seem to lessen each season. Perfectly priced at 7m. The problem is the defcons, I cant see him getting many at all, so the 5.5m players will likely be able to match him over the course of the season now

This is good feedback. I'd add the De Cuyper might be a better option that Van Hecke, but Van Hecke is a good player too.

I quite like the Maddison pick.
