We take a look at the best budget Fantasy Premier League (FPL) goalkeepers as we continue our trawl through the price list.

Can a £4.5m option match Matz Sels’ (£5.0m) achievement from last season and finish as the second-highest scoring goalkeeper?

And who are the bench fodder back-ups in the £4.0m bracket?

Let’s take a look…

Club-by-club

When could be the best times to Bench Boost? 2

Here, we detail the possible £4.5m starters, club-by club:

ClubGoalkeeperWhat to watch out for
BournemouthDjordje PetrovicNeto has returned to Bournemouth after a season-long loan spent as David Raya’s back-up at Arsenal. However, given Petrovic’s desire to be a regular starter, plus the hefty £25m outlay, you’d expect him to be Andoni Iraola’s number one.
BrentfordCaoimhin Kelleher
BrightonBart Verbruggen
BurnleyMax Weiss2024/25 number one James Trafford has re-joined Manchester City. Burnley signed 21-year-old Max Weiss from Karlsruher earlier this summer but appear keen on complementing the youngster with a more experienced positional rival. Recent reports suggest Sam Johnstone could arrive soon.
LeedsLucas PerriNew £16m signing Lucas Perri was regarded as one of Ligue 1’s best goalkeepers last season and is expected to be first-choice at Elland Road. Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier will likely slip down the pecking order.
SunderlandAnthony PattersonPatterson has been absent from Sunderland’s pre-season so far due to injury and the club have made no secret of their desire to land a new goalkeeper this summer. Indeed, the Black Cats have reportedly reached an agreement with NEC Nijmegen to sign Robin Roefs.
West HamAlphonse Areola
WolvesJose Sa

Best budget FPL goalkeepers

3m team news: Alisson ill, Estuinan starts, Son benched

The choice of your goalkeeper will likely be influenced by when you plan or at least expect to Wildcard.

Gameweek 4 will be a popular window, as it follows an international break. The summer transfer window will have just closed, too.

Gameweek 7 is also attractive, as Fantasy managers can look to capitalise on Arsenal’s favourable fixture swing.

If this applies to you, there is no need to look too far ahead with the fixtures.

Below is our Season Ticker for the eight clubs featured in the above table, sorted by fixture difficulty in Gameweeks 1-6:

Brentford’s Caoimhin Kelleher instantly jumps out. He’s currently the most-owned goalkeeper in FPL, sitting in 32.0% of embryonic squads.

The Bees had to wait until Gameweek 12 of the 2024/25 season to achieve their first clean sheet; however, from that point onwards, they managed to secure eight shut-outs in 27 matches.

Previous Brentford shot-stopper Mark Flekken had plenty of other routes to points. He racked up 156 saves in total, 30 more than the next-best goalkeeper.

That said, this was linked to Thomas Frank’s approach, which limited opponents to low-quality shooting opportunities, frequently from afar. He has since left, along with Christian Norgaard (£5.5m) and Bryan Mbeumo (£8.0m), so there are lots of uncertainties regarding Brentford right now.

Brentford’s first six home fixtures are incredibly tough, too (AVL/CHE/MUN/MCI/LIV/NEW), but the £4.5 goalkeeper bracket doesn’t appear to be particularly strong this season, so Kelleher still looks like one of the best options on paper.

FPL Gameweek 27: Saturday’s goals, assists, bonus points + stats

West Ham United’s Alphonse Areola is a viable alternative. The Hammers managed only three clean sheets in 18 matches under Graham Potter last season, but their fixtures in Gameweeks 1-6 – including Sunderland (a), Crystal Palace (h) and Everton (a) – are rated as the fourth-best from a defensive perspective on our Season Ticker.

For those looking longer-term, Djordje Petrovic, Jose Sa and Bart Verbruggen carry more appeal.

The loss of Kepa Arrizabalaga (£4.5m), Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez (£6.0m) will have many Fantasy managers concerned about Bournemouth’s clean sheet potential, but Petrovic excelled on loan at RC Strasbourg last season, where he kept 10 clean sheets in 31 league appearances en route to winning the club’s player of the season award.

The initial Bournemouth fixtures present challenges, but there are at least a couple of matches that offer shut-out potential before the end of September, namely Wolverhampton Wanderers (h) and Leeds United (a).

After a tough start, Sa and Wolves face all three newly-promoted clubs in Gameweeks 5-9.

Gameweeks 10-17 is probably the best period for Verbruggen and Brighton. The Dutch goalkeeper has yet to feature in pre-season but was pictured at the Spain training camp.

Club2024/25 goalkeeperSaves per 90Saves made from shots taken outside the area/total savesBig chances conceded (team)Mins per xGC (team)

WolvesSa2.4522/719263.1
BrightonVerbruggen2.5315/919167.7

As for the newly-promoted options, Leeds United’s Lucas Perri is arguably the best bet, particularly given the current uncertainty surrounding Burnley and Sunderland’s starting goalkeepers.

Daniel Farke’s side impressed defensively last season, with a total of 25 clean sheets.

The Premier League is a completely different proposition, mind, and there are cheaper £4.0m routes into the Whites’ defence.

Assessing the £4.0m goalkeepers

Transfer news: Confirmed January signings in FPL 1

Club£4.0m goalkeepers
ArsenalKarl Hein, Tommy Setford
Aston VillaJoe Gauci, Filip Marschall
Bournemouth Will Dennis, Callan McKenna, Alex Paulsen
BrentfordEllery Balcombe, Matthew Cox, Julian Eyestone, Hakan Valdimarsson

Fulham            Benjamin Lecomte
LeedsAlex Cairns, Karl Darlow
Liverpool        Armin Pecsi, Freddie Woodman
Man CityMarcus Bettinelli
Man Utd          Tom Heaton, Dermot Mee
NewcastleMartin Dubravka, Mark Gillespie, Odysseas Vlachodimos
Nott’m ForestCarlos Miguel, Matt Turner
Sunderland     Simon Moore, Nna Noukeu
TottenhamBrandon Austin, Antonin Kinsky
West Ham       Wes Foderingham, Krisztian Hegyi
Wolves            Dan Bentley, Tom King

There are a whopping 39 goalkeepers listed at £4.0m, as detailed above.

However, it’s unlikely any of them will be a Gameweek 1 starter without an injury or two to a team-mate.

The situation at Tottenham is worth monitoring in pre-season. Guglielmo Vicario (£5.0m) will likely continue as the club’s number one, but Antonin Kinsky’s ability on the ball could make him a decent fit for Frank’s approach. Some have even suggested Kinsky might get the nod in goal, though recent reports have linked him with a loan move to Lille.

Karl Darlow’s (£4.0m) stock has fallen following the arrival of Perri, but he could still provide backup with Illan Meslier (£4.5m) potentially on his way out of the club.

The back-up custodians of Crystal Palace (Walter Benitez), Fulham (Benjamin Lecomte) and Nottingham Forest (Carlos Miguel) are all listed at £4.0m.

Sam Johnstone is expected to leave Wolves, so Dan Bentley could potentially be added too.

For FPL managers looking to spend as little as possible on goalkeepers, these are the only £4.5m/£4.0m first-choice/reserve combinations at the time of writing:

Team£4.5m first-choice goalkeeper£4.0m reserve goalkeeper
BrentfordKelleherValdimarsson
LeedsPerriDarlow
West HamAreolaFoderingham

We’ve omitted Burnley and Sunderland from the above list, as the arrival of new goalkeepers will likely push the £4.0m options down into third in the pecking order.

I'm trying to harness any seer third eye capabilities on this one and I simply don't have any.

On Petrovic, but could easily go Kelleher

Worth noting even Henderson had a decent season the end

so its trying to pick over an extended patch

Or even Kinsky as FF Scout says above. A playing 4.0m goalie would be ideal.

even a Kinsky or Darlow emerges I'd go 8m keepers. Did disastrous with Ward Iversen in 22-23 (sold before 6 in 8 CSs), but picking is a crapshoot

Almost everyone will have a £4.0m goalkeeper in their gameweek 1 squad and yet it doesn't warrant its own article.

More disappointment from my favourite article series of the season.

They couldn't even be bothered to research which of the £4m keepers are the proper, next-in-line back ups who sit on the bench during games. Another rush job by the deputy. More research we're going to have to do ourselves.

You didn't reply to my message on X?

You said I'd missed out a huge number of viable £4.5m defender picks, yet when I asked who, you replied with Richards and Kilman, plus a pretty useless table.

We've never had a standalone £4.0m goalkeepers article to my knowledge.

I also stated Benitez, Miguel, Valdimarsson and a few others are the current backup options in the copy.

It wasn't a 'rush job' either.

Picking a £4.0m is an art form and there are so many things to consider, which is why it warrants its own article. It's easy to say in one sentence that none of them look like starting, but so much detail and research is required to determine which one out of 39 has the best chance of getting game time. All it takes is for a first choice keeper to lose a bit of form and then you have a starting £4m keeper. If you put the work in, you can get ahead of the curve and already have this keeper in your team because you know which starting keeper is most susceptible to being dropped.

But you're just going to blame some random content creator or Neale's predicted lineups when you have a poor season. Choosing a 4.0 keeper isn't going to make much difference.

Fabianski is the classic example from last season. I had him from gameweek 1 because I knew Areola was the most likely to be dropped.

Bowen's much maligned on here, but he's a baller and in my draft. Proven 175+ point performer over multiple seasons (one semi-recent hiccup). No 7.5 FWD can say that. Re-class immaterial to last season's points. Worth the 0.5 in my view. And, as you say, can always downgrade if that's looking the right choice.

Who are your gambles for the start of season?

    I've gone;

Igor Thiago - massively underpriced due to injury last season but tipped to play a huge role this season. Looks great pre season
Georgino Rutter - is set to be Brightons first choice number 10, highly creatvie and possibly on pens

Both are are only 6 mill, both carry risk.

Rest of my team is largely template

feels like the best BB1 draft i could come up with. 0.5m ITB for whatever upgrade in GW2.

    Verbruggen, Areola
Tarkowski, Murillo, AWB, Van de Ven, Gudmundsson
Salah, Palmer, Rogers, Ndiaye, Le Fee
    Bowen, Solanke, Wood

So what's up with Newcastle's transfer window? I thought with the Saudi money they will be going ham. Does FFP restrict them? Genuine query, not a diss or anything.

Not much they can do with Saudi money if players would rather play for other clubs

PSR restricts spending and they've had a pretty strict wage structure to help keep spending in check. The team on the pitch has developed quicker than the finances off the pitch. The big Sky six can still flex their financial muscle over Newcastle. Isak is Newcastle's top earner and could probably earn over double that at one of those other clubs.

One of the better ones i've seen TBH.
Maybe drop Gykores to a Wood/Solanke and upgrade Rodon to a Tarkowski

Oh. Decent. I think they'll line up:

          Kerkez. Virgil. Konate. Frimpong.

Nice cheap way in. I'm sticking with Virgil but would love Frimpong. Remember how good and high he got in the last euros. class

Could get an even cheaper way in. Konate may be on the move, and Guehi has been looked at as a poss replacement if he is, and he’s 4.5.

I currently have gyokeres, piroe and neco with 1.0 itb. That money will be used to do piroe to JSL in gw4 if piroe’s punt doesnt work (im benching him for the arsenal game gw2). But i will want to do gyokeres to watkins in gw3 but with 0 itb. Any price rise on watkins or fall in piroe will price me out. Should i risk it this way or use the 1.0 itb to do neco to milenkovic and keep 0.5 for the gyokeres-watkins move and keep faith that piroes output gonna be good till gw 9 and ignore JSL?

    Bowen's an interesting one

This time last season the debate was raging regarding Havertz. I maintained that apart from Firmino 17-18 and mids re-classified as forwards simply doesn't work. Remember that season when Zaha was classified as one as well?!

Anyhow, Havertz actually started well and I was reminded of Antonio (with Behnrama 21-22 start).

    Two things then happened.

Havertz did what all POOs do and faded

but the biggest development imo was the notice in how the bonus changed

and its that latter factor, which for all the negativity I/we have against POOs that means that Bowen may actually prove to be a decent pick...

It's an overreaction, he would have lost 5 points last years (188 instead of 193).
He is a proven FPL asset and a real talisman, especially under Potter.
West Ham are expected to struggle, but any goals they do score will be mostly through him. Plus they are top 3 in the fixture ticker for the first 12 GWs.

that's interesting that the re-calculations would have left him 5 points worse. Shows how powerful bonus is now for the front 3

but that there's still a penalty, albeit now a small one

He'd actually have lost 14 from the positional switch itself. Gained 7 bonus. Lost 8 cleanies and 13 goal points.

He would have gotten another 3 points with the new assist rules and 6 defcon points. So that's why it stays at 188.
