The clean-sheet-keeping, defensive-contribution-accumulating (and low-scoring…) goliaths of Everton are up next in our Fantasy Premier League (FPL) team previews.

In this guide, we’ll be looking at Everton’s best FPL picks for the upcoming campaign.

We’ll also take an early stab at their predicted line-up for Gameweek 1, look at the good and bad on the field, assess the opening fixtures, detail their best players for defensive contributions (DC) and more!

EVERTON: REASONS TO BE CHEERFUL

MOYES’ IMPACT

Everton team

The above image from Football365 shows the Premier League table from the point of David Moyes’ appointment.

Moyes lost his first game as returning Everton boss but after that, it was just three defeats in 18 games. Those three losses all came against sides in the top four.

Away form was particularly strong, with five wins and just six goals conceded in nine outings on the road.

According to Statsbomb, Everton didn’t have an expected goals conceded (xGC) of greater than 1.04 in any of their final 16 matches. They had done so on 15 occasions before that.

Can the honeymoon period continue? Oliver Glasner is a cautionary recent example of momentum loss: he had a brilliant spell at the back-end of 2023/24 but Palace were winless in eight in his first full season at the helm.

DEFENSIVELY SOUND

We’ve already touched on Everton’s big selling point above: their defence.

This is a backline that knows each other well and has barely changed over the last two years. The one new addition, Jake O’Brien (£5.0m), is even an upgrade on what went before at right-back, despite being a more natural centre-half.

The continuity, and the pragmatic approaches of Messrs Dyche and Moyes, have produced results. Everton have been in the top five for fewest goals conceded over the last two seasons. A combined 25 clean sheets have arrived in that time, a tally that only Arsenal (31) and Manchester City (26) can better.

What’s happening at Newcastle this transfer window? Thought the takeover 3/4 years ago was supposed to ease things.

Ramsdale and Elanga in so far.
I think a striker will come, they’re just waiting by on Sesko to make a decision. If he chooses MTD, then I would expect a play for a different striker, maybe Wissa. I think they could with a CB more than anything though

Doesn't really look like a BB team to me, with such a weak bench, but if you want to get the chip out of the way, go ahead.

Not sure about Sessegnon, Kudus and VDV.

feeling like this might be the one. 4-4-2 but i keep thinking Munoz is better than any 5.5m MID.

    Sanchez (Dubravka)
    VVD, Tark, Williams, Munoz (Esteve)
    Salah, Palmer, Wirtz, Sarr (Baleba)
    Watkins, JSL (Guiu)

could BB2 with a couple of tweaks if I wanted to force it early. (Sarr, Tark, Guiu -> Rice, Andersen, Beto.) but thinking i'll hold off until Burnley have another decent fixture.

I don't mind it, especially with DEFCON making 4 ATB possible to fit in more expensive attackers

My counter argument would be that Watkins/Wirtz + 5.5 mid/def is a tad unlikely to outscore two 7.0 + 7.0/7.5 attackers, unless you cap that Watkins/Wirtz spot for some mega hauls... Which is possible, tbf

Wood only in 16% of teams ahead of a home game against Brentford. Is he being overlooked or are expectations for Forest really much lower this year?

there's a sense that everyone figured Forest out by the end of last year, they did drop off pretty hard. also have to figure most people can't trust a 33-year-old coming off a career year. though i'd still take him over Joao Pedro or Solanke to start

      1. Ze_Austin
        • 7 Years

I think fixtures and Forest's style of play make him the best we've got until someone else emerges or Europe exhaustion kicks in

Also, my read of last season was more exhaustion than being figured out, as their fixed style of play was clear from early in the season, and they were high in the table too (so not underestimated by opponents)... Yet an important factor could be that Nuno didn't rotate, so minutes accumulated in those legs

I'm more likely to want a second Chelsea attacker (with Palmer) than a second Forest attacker (with Wood), so I'd rather keep my routes open to a bandwagon third Chelsea after Palmer and Cucurella

On merit alone, still Anderson with nearly double the attacking returns in fewer games played

      Monitor Rogers's ankle knock

I'd rather Dúbravka (expected to start for Burnley) than Turner, letting you triple up on Forest if they start well with those fixtures. Also, I think they've got a new 2nd GK in Gunn (expected to be 4.0 too), so Turner probably isn't Sels's backup anyway

Haaland + Gakpo vs Salah + Evanilson/6.5 is always gonna be a personal choice, so that's up to you

The rest seems fine for now. I don't really like Porro's price in the new DC era though

Sunderland have spent a lot on improved players, but I wonder if it'll take some time to get them playing well as a cohesive team

They have the least bad fixtures among promoted teams, which would have been great for cheap bench players to start the season. Yet I fear for their defence, so it's just Guiu here for now

    1. Bad Kompany
      • 7 Years

New players, lack of cohesion, step up to premier league are all reasons to avoid for me. Guiu makes perfect bench for bench though. Can even work for bench boost

Fwiw, Watkins dropped off by 40+ points last season compared to 23/24 but his Points Per Minute were pretty much the same. All being well he should spend more time on the pitch this season and I'd bet against any of the other three outpointing him if he does.

The danger with a long pre season is that people talk them selves out of obvious picks. Kudus is a fantastic player when played in his correct position(RW) and is priced kindly at 6.5 . He has been fantastic in pre season and spurs fans absolutely love him. Great fixtures for a while too barring GW 2. He is so obvious a pick that he has entered the realm of the casual pick zone and ironically may end up being a bit of a differential among serious players

Hi there Keith, nice to see you. 15 years, eh? There’s certainly something in what you say. Every year I half-promise myself I’m going to wait until a week before the start of the season before I pick my squad. Unfortunately, it never works out that way and oftentimes end up changing things around for change’s sake rather than to strengthen the squad.

I hope you’re right about Kudus. He could be the go-to if Rogers’ injury rules him out for a while. Best of luck for the season.

Kudus had 9 GIs in 33 games at WHU.

Spurs without Son and Maddy look short of creativity upfront. Solid defensively, but no teeth in final third.

      IMHO.

The Arsenal team still don't know how to play with Gyok yet. Amount of times they pass it back when Gyok makes a decent run, it's like they think they still have Kai up top.

Rest looks fine. Slight worry about Kluivert is the sheer number of options Bournemouth have in that position.

Good comms on Gyok, obviously taking him out woyjd change the while structure and likely lead to 3 up top. Kluuvert could become Semenyo. Before last season (or even last season) that's why I avoided Kluivert due to mins risk, but seems to now be the the favoured choice.

Lot of focus on Anderson at 5.5 with DC and occasional attacking points - but what about Christie at 5.0? Even better DC perhaps slightly less attacking points but saving you 0.5 and the fixtures after GW1 are beautiful.

    Thoughts on that?

The opening fixture has given the community a bias against Bournemouth. I think he's a fine pick.

Non-insider. Think Foden competes with Cherki. Reijnders I suspect will be first choice as the box crashing/carrying 8, BUT Gundo will get minutes and the odd start.

Rotation is a pill we have to swallow when going on Pep roulette.

I think RAN is going to get 30+ starts this year. Gvardiol probably the most nailed but why not take the upside play on a guy who might get 12+ CS and 10+ GI?

    Rogers injury (6:05): https://youtu.be/ifcgrUjwOU8?si=qSBDmFrYmnR95sOy&utm_source=MTQxZ

Doesnt look like an inversion injury if left ankle, possible high ankle sprain. Immediate signal to the bench is concerning.

I'm not saying it's not a significant injury but players signal to the bench if they spot a fleck of dandruff on their shoulder these days.

Hello, where would you depend the extra 1m?

Planning to BB and probably WC fairly early.

    Kelleher Dubravka
    VVD Udogie Diouf Colwill Esteve
    Salah Palmer Wirtz Anderson Dewsbury-Hall
    Watkins Wood Fullkrug

Do you think Aina/Williams is a better pick than Colwill/Lacroix/Collins/Romero/Mitchell/Robinson

    RMT

    Friedel (Rob Green,)
    Vidic, Hyypia, Hreiðarsson, Melberg(Konchesky)
Lampard, Gerrard, Okocha, Duff (wright Phillips)
    Henry, Drogba (Bartlett)

Wanted Terry but think Duff will be good value

    Current draft:

    Verbruggen Dubravka
VVD Murillo Lacroix Van de Ven Rodon
    Salah Fernandes Foden Rogers Anderson
    Gyokeres Watkins Guiu

Some things I need to work out:

    1. Who is the best 4.5 rotating keeper with Burnley?
    2. Lacroix & Rodon or Richards & 4.5? Not sure how nailed Richards is but when he plays he’s big for DC points.
    3. Needs to change if Rogers injured for start.

      1. Only GWs where you can use Burnley GK are GW2 and GW8 in first 10 GWs. So you basically need someone who can play all GWs. Budget limit of 4.5 means Kelleher is your only option who can provide safe returns due to saves. BHA defense is dodgy.

      2. Richards should be nailed. More so if Guehi leaves but that will weaken their defense. I think Lacroix plus 4m is alright with that defense although I'm not a fan of De Ven.

Why does Kelleher rack up lots of saves yet Dubravka doesn’t and only ships goals? Speculation and hyperbole there I think.

          Eh?

Its Kelleher vs Verbruggen, not Kelleher vs Dubravka. He already has Dubs. He can pick between those 2 based on fixtures.

Thanks. I like Lacroix as he also has goal threat so reluctant to move but it’s an option is I need a better keeper or a 4.5 instead of Rodon.

Saw my first FPL dream of the season last night.
    - Liv-Ars 10-1 (Salah blank)
    - Man City's match: Haaland didnt feature
    - New-Sun 0-3
    - Che-Bou 4-5

    You can thank me later...
