We’re hearing from all our guest writers ahead of the big Gameweek 1 kick-off.

Here, three-time top 200 finisher Lateriser discusses four things – both on and off the field – that could still alter our Gameweek 1 teams.

Make sure you sign up for the new season to get all the Member-only articles, tools and features to make 2025/26 your best FPL campaign yet!

Lateriser triple Forest

There’s not much time left to make many decisions and yet I’ve still to resolve so many of them.

Largely, I feel fairly settled with the information my brain has processed and have a shortlist in my head of permutations and combinations. However, I think most of us FPL managers will only finalise those decisions based on what we see over the weekend.

We keep telling ourselves that pre-season doesn’t matter and it’s only a fitness exercise but I think the closer the friendlies get to Gameweek 1, the more relevant the information. And that is why I think we can gain a fair amount of knowledge from the action at the weekend – and what happens off the field over the next week.

1. HOW WILL MAN CITY LOOK?

FPL notes: KDB outdoes Marmoush + why Pep didn't use Haaland 2

So far, we don’t have an idea of how Manchester City will look.

While the shape of Chelsea is relatively more predictable (if we use the end of the Club World Club) as a base, that of Manchester City still has some question marks.

I think all of us are conveniently ignoring a certain Erling Haaland (£14.0m) using the ‘captaincy’ reason but I think we might regret it if we don’t go there. I am certainly giving myself the same reason but I just know that he’s going to start the season on fire. Man City are much better equipped to handle this campaign with their recruitment and return to fitness (and relevance) of a couple of their key players.

I am certainly targeting that fixture in Gameweek 6 as a key point to invest in their team (if my head hasn’t turned this weekend).

2. DUBRAVKA + GUIU: HOW MANY MINUTES WILL THEY GET?

FPL new signings: £4.0m goalkeeper Dubravka 2

There is so much information out there to gain which will determine the shape of our squad.

If, like me, you’re looking at a Bench Boost in the first three Gameweeks, the fitness of Martin Dubravka (£4.0m) and how Sunderland plan to use Marc Guiu (£4.5m) is very important.

How Burnley and the Black Cats use these two budget gems over the weekend will be interesting. Keep an ear out for next week’s press conferences, too.

There’s also a question mark over the fitness of Morgan Rogers (£7.0m), of course.

3. STRIKER MERRY-GO-ROUND

FPL Gameweek 9 differentials: Wissa, Cunha + Anderson 4

And not just that, a big striker-sized domino effect is still pending in the league.

The futures of Alexander Isak (£10.5m), Yoane Wissa (£7.5m) and Nicolas Jackson (£6.5m) are still to be determined, all of whom will become very relevant in the FPL domain.

A £7.5m or £6.5m forward leading the line for Newcastle would be an interesting proposition.

I am really hoping that Ollie Watkins (£9.0m) does not become a part of that merry-go-round for strikers, as I would very much like him to be the main man at Aston Villa.

4. PALACE’S EUROPEAN FATE

FPL notes: Eze’s scoring run, Munoz threat + Kulusevski injury

Speaking of information to be gained, I am very intrigued by Crystal Palace because I believe they have had a very good pre-season with a settled team playing together regularly.

But what happens with their appeal on Monday will determine how I view their team. If they have to play a European qualifier between Gameweeks 1-2 and 2-3, that will slightly put me off their assets and vice versa.

In addition, while the news of Eberechi Eze (£7.5m) leaving Crystal Palace has calmed down at the moment, I am still worried about one of the north London clubs making a big move. This might have an Olise-sized effect on the start of the season for Palace, who were slow off the mark last year. I don’t expect that to be the case this year if they keep hold of Eze, which makes the in-form Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.5m), Ismaila Sarr (£6.5m), Daniel Munoz (£5.5m) Maxence Lacroix (£5.0m), Chris Richards (£4.5m) and Eze himself all very interesting options from an FPL point of view.

This affects the attackers more, in my opinion, as I think Eze directly affects the points potential of Mateta, Sarr and Munoz (who I see as an attacker!).

PLAYING MY OWN GAME

Away from the above considerations, it is an exciting time in FPL. So much to learn and the heart is full of hope and optimism.

I’ve not had the best three years but while I admit I didn’t really play good FPL for a season or two, last year I thought I played fairly well and just didn’t have the rub of the green. I’m aware that my playstyle means a relatively wider bell curve in the possibilities of rank in the season, where I am as capable of having a top 5k finish as I am of having a top 500k finish.

But I realised in the two years of not playing FPL well that, to truly enjoy the game, I have to back my gut and hope that the hours of time put into reading, watching football and now looking at analytical data (you learn or get left behind) is going to lead to a subconscious that is more powered than the average FPL manager.

I’m hoping to pay more attention to minutes, work on accumulating more free transfers so I can make them in tranches of 3-4 instead of 1-2, not ignore penalties and largely start going rogue only when we start going deeper into the season. All of the above, while reflecting a little more and spending some time with my own mind.

With the abundance of content out there, it is easy to keep consuming more while ultimately thinking less about your team. It’s a mistake I’ve tended to make over the last few seasons. Hopefully, I’ll correct that and process my thoughts a lot more than listening to others’ processed thoughts.

And most importantly, here’s hoping that lady luck is on my side this campaign. Fingers crossed. On that note, good luck everyone!

Evanilson with a goal against Real Sociedad. Been right put off Bournemouth initially, their attack could still be decent though.

    Salah + Strand Larsen

    OR

    Haaland + Rogers

I'm getting tempted to go Haaland and hope that Wirtz can cover Salah for the first few weeks.

I think 4 unknowns is probably barely touching the sides of the reality, I can't remember a season quite like it where so many teams look nearly unrecognisable from last season. I don't think Point 2 LR raises even matters that much either. If Guiu and Dubravka get mins they are still mins for a promoted side, unless they really surprise us they are unlikely to be players you can rely on much. If they don't work out you've got your wildcard to use. One of the interesting parts in the FPL circles might be how patient people are or are not around some of these newer signings. Football in general is quick to put players down as failed signings, indeed some have already been doing it for Gyokeres after a few minutes in pre-season, FPL community is probably even worse for writing off players. There's obviously a balance to be struck and its not easy deciding when to stick or twist. I think all the uncertainty is good for kicking a half decent template at least a few weeks or months down the road at least.

The FPL community are particularly bad at judging players and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because they watch points rather than games, but I frequently see completely outrageous or out-of-touch takes on here. Had someone rating Murphy over Isak yesterday and it honestly kept me up all night.

FPL points are a different yardstick tho

            And Jacob Murphy is decent

Not as good as Isak but tbf he's playing a different role in the team

              • 11 Years
              3 months, 29 days ago

That is true, but I've seen people on here specifically judge players' IRL quality based on points. I can't remember which player it was, but I'm sure it was someone who had missed a lot of games through injury.

Yes Murphy is decent, but Isak is world class - it's insane to think they're remotely close to each other, just because Murphy had a good season.

Have they killed the premium defender with the defensive actions tweak?

You have to assume the premium defenders are not from teams who are under the cosh, could cheaper defenders be the way to go this year? If you find the defensive action picks, even if they concede and they hit their target, that’s 4 points, is 1.5m spent on a 6m defender worth the extra 2 points a CS brings?

          Possibly

Depends how you define decent, decent shouldn’t be CS potential (given the change of rules) decent should be ballon headed players who are going to block & clear things because their teams are going to be under attack,

This game is all about goals and assists

There's been a massive over reaction to clearances

The 2 points will get lost in the noise just like appearance points

                  Even though they tally up

I hardly watch any video content

I prefer to scan read etc

But if I never see another video that repeats "defensive contributions* constantly that will be fine by me

        Flekken 138 + Vald 2

Decent total for a 4.5. I had it in my head that Flekken was a terrible asset. Brentford are getting players back from injury. It is possible that Norgaard and Frank's departure will of course have some kind of impact defensively

How essential is Palmer ? I am tempted to go saka instead and have Pedro in a 343

I'd say pretty essential. Never understood buying players to try and cover an other player. Pick the best player at the price point regardless, even if its two from the same team. If you think saka and .5 outscores Palmer, pick Saka.

        Current Team.

        Sanchez
        Gvardiol, Milenkovic, VDV,
        Salah, Palmer, Gakpo, Rogers, Ndiaye
        Watkins, Wood

        Dubrakva, Etseve, Guiu, Reinildo

Fairly happy. I'm aware the bench is weak but other than Guiu, they should all be starters. I have considered Milenkovic down to Williams, to push a 4m up to a 4.5m but the Milenkovic plus side is keeping me with him. Anything obvious missing ?
        Dubrakva, Esteve, Guiu, Reinildo.

I think they'll do ok over the season. Just don't think you can ignore the Villa fixtures at the start. As a villa fan, if we score Rogers and Watkins will be involved in most of them.
If you want one from each, I actually prefer the cheaper players. In Rogers and Mateta.

Game week 2 fixtures are pretty even...

With the exception of Arsenal v Leeds not many games look like a banker for a clean sheet.

Chelsea and Man City should also win but other than that it's all pretty close.

Villa and Liverpool could get away wins too.

With Forest and Palace picks in defense I've scrubbed BB gw2. It's a non starter.

I'll play my Burnley players instead of Sels etc.

Flekken was the second best fantasy goalkeeper in the second half of 24/25; only Ederson with his three assists earned more PPG. Hopefully Kelleher - who actually earned the best season long PPG total in his 10 games for Liverpool - can emulate him and at least pay his way.

£6m fith defender is the price of Bruno over Rogers or Eze

It might not be worth sacrificing the Villa two

Doesn't seem to be much difference in the RMT tool between Verbruggen & the 5.0 million goalkeepers.

This seems a bit odd as I thought Sanchez & Sels would be way ahead for the projected points.

Pretty tempted to go with Verbruggen now.

if he was fit I think we'd drift over to Verbruggen by default

I'm just watching Wrexham and Danny Ward 4.0 is in goal which is quite triggering

If Dubravka is 100% nailed to atart every game then I'd still be inclined to go 4.0 + 4.0, but niggles is a recurring theme atm for GKers

Subsequently, I think Kelleher and V are the pair as it stands

That's the opposite of an agile structure. When your cheapo defence and strikers are all benched, subbed at half time or concede 5, you've got no way to switch to better players without a hit.

        4. Diles Mavis
          • 1 Year

But I can jump on any bandwagon with 1 or max 2 FTs using money from MID or FWD (or switch cheap defenders to other cheap defenders depending who's getting minutes)

You can't jump on anything if your 3 stating defenders start losing value. 3x4M players could very quickly become 3x3.9M players and then you have to sell another player to put money in the bank to fix the cheapo defence. Bad strategy.
