Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£5.0m) was the standout performer for Everton on Saturday, as David Moyes’ side were defeated 1-0 by Roma at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In this Scout Notes article, we’ll cover the key notes and quotes from this clash.

The friendly involving Fulham is also summarised.

FPL pre-season: Gordon injury, Isak latest + De Cuyper goal 1

EVERTON 0-1 ROMA

DEWSBURY-HALL THREAT

Everton remain a work in progress but there were positives to take on Saturday, particularly from debutant Dewsbury-Hall.

Playing in a No 10 role, the £5.0m midfielder demonstrated his ability to drive forward with the ball and create, registering four key passes in just over an hour of football.

He was on set-pieces, too, another string to his bow.

“I thought Kiernan did well. I thought he gave us some quality and you could see the difference in his levels with some of the things he did, which were very good, so I’m really pleased with that part.” – David Moyes on Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

With Carlos Alcaraz (£5.5m) and Iliman Ndiaye (£6.5m) deployed on the flanks, Everton were the better side for large periods and did create several opportunities.

Thierno Barry (£6.0m), however, squandered the most significant of those chances.

With neither Barry nor Beto (£5.5m) truly making a strong impression during pre-season, Moyes has a difficult choice of who to start up front against Leeds United in Gameweek 1.

As for Ndiaye, he missed a decent chance shortly after half-time and later forced a save from the Roma ‘keeper.

BRANTHWAITE RETURNS/MYKOLENKO INJURY

Jarrad Branthwaite (£5.5m) missed the Premier League Summer Series through injury but returned to the starting XI here, lining up alongside James Tarkowski (£5.5m) at the back.

The pair looked assured for the most part, with Tarkowski’s header from a Dewsbury-Hall corner shaving the woodwork.

Notably, both centre-backs would have hit the defensive contributions (DC) threshold in this match, with 11 and 14 respectively.

But Everton did lose Vitalii Mykolenko (£5.0m) to injury, as he walked off gingerly after only 10 minutes.

His replacement, Adam Aznou (£4.5m), showed some good touches but was caught out of position for the goal.

The extent of Mykolenko’s injury is yet to be determined.

“We’ll wait to see what the report says, we’ve not had chance yet.” – David Moyes on Vitalii Mykolenko

Everton XI: Pickford, O’Brien, Tarkowski, Branthwaite (Keane 79), Mykolenko (Aznou 11), Garner, Gueye (Iroegbunam 62), Alcaraz (Chermiti 80), Dewsbury-Hall (McNeil 61), Ndiaye, Barry (Beto 61)

FULHAM 1-0 EINTRACHT FRANKFURT

FPL notes: Raul's return to form, Rogers + Watkins superb

  • Goal: Jimenez

JIMENEZ GOAL/£4.5M KING STARTS

Raul Jimenez (£6.5m) scored a superb free-kick as Fulham triumphed 1-0 over Eintracht Frankfurt.

In the absence of Rodrigo Muniz (£5.5m), who apparently took part in a behind-closed-doors friendly between the two sides earlier in the day, the Mexican proved the difference maker, firing home from just under 30 yards.

Harry Wilson (£5.5m) was later denied when his low shot was smothered, while Josh King (£4.5m) performed well in the No 10 role and was slightly unfortunate not to win a penalty.

Influential in the middle of the park, King has now racked up 164 minutes of pre-season football as he aims to become a regular starter under Marco Silva.

ROBINSON + SESSEGNON INJURY LATEST

In his post-match presser, Silva confirmed Antonee Robinson (£5.0m) will not be ready to face Brighton and Hove Albion in Gameweek 1, simply saying “Jedi is not ready”.

In a further blow, Ryan Sessegnon (£5.5m) was taken off after just 22 minutes against Frankfurt.

“He felt something. Let’s see in the next few hours or few days how he reacts. We’ll do some exams on him.” – Marco Silva on Ryan Sessegnon

Losing both players would be a major blow to Fulham, with Jorge Cuenca (£4.5m) or Timothy Castagne (£4.5m) likely to fill in at the Amex Stadium. That could be good news for Brighton right winger Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m).

Fulham XI: Leno, Tete, Andersen, Bassey, Sessegnon (Amissah 22), Berge, Lukic, Wilson, King (Cairney 73), Iwobi, Jimenez

So I'm I crazy for thanking this, but I'm beginning to thank that starting with haaland is a better option than Salah, IV had Salah in everyone off my drafts, but honestly I didn't thank he was great in that community shield the day, and I know it's a one off game, but I feel he isn't the main man anymore for Liverpool, that he won't be relied on as much for goals, wirtz and Ekitike look great and I thank alot will go through them this season, where as city have better fixtures and haaland as been scoring away in pre season, he usually starts the season well, what's people's thots?

‘I didn't thank he was great’

He was crap. But it’s Salah. Drop him at your peril.

        I’m considering it.

Salah does this, he takes a backseat to let new signings in the team take the light.
He can't keep it up for more than a game and a half, it's in his character, before he decides he'll just do it all himself. Beforeyou know it, boom - 300 points again

Having the same thought. If the option is Haaland, who we know is nailed, we know can go points crazy. If there are any questuin marks around Salah surely the optimal decision is Haaland?

I still see going withou Mo as the highest risk one can take to start the season.

However I believe that in the games where Liverpool will perform well and score multiple goals, the likes of Wirtz Ekitike will be highly involved. So if one is able to adequately spend the Salah money elsewhere, I think it can be quite an upside strategy.

GW1 captaincy without Mo is tricky though. GW2 Saka (C) and GW3 Bruno (C) not bad though

Last season i thought i would start without Salah & Haaland in my team. After getting wupped for 3 weeks on the bounce i changed that with a WC in GW4 and captained Salah in GW4 instead of Haaland which turned out to be one of the few GW's he failed to score/assist. At the end of GW4 i was over 100 points behind my mini league leaders and sat at 64/64th position and about 8.5million ranking overall.
Thankfully for me i had Palmer as captain GW6 when not many had and started catching up finsishing in about 10th in our league and about 450'000 overall. I am not making that mistake fully again though i am only going with Salah, no Haaland and Salah is my GW1 captain.

Would love to hear thoughts on my triple Liverpool midfield draft below!

    Sanchez
    Murillo - N Williams - Diouf
    Salah - Wirtz - Gakpo - Palmer - Reijnders
    Watkins - Mateta

    Bench- Dubravka, Richards, Esteve, Guiu

No worries. Lets you keep 3x 'pool if that's what you're going for and he looked a lot more lively today than Gakpo, at least in the few glimpses in the second half I caught.

Yeah, I wasn't brave enough to truly seriously consider a threemium. So this is what I'm thinking instead:

    Verbruggen
    Cucu | Murillo | VdV
    (S)alah | Kudus | Reindeer | Minteh
    Haaland (v) | Ekitike | Bowen

    Darlow, Gudmundsson, King, Ekdal

    1. IN SANE IN DE BRUYNE
      • 9 Years
      3 months, 27 days ago

Not bad, but underwhelming midfield imo
Ekdal isn't nailed. Esteve is nailed though

Maybe you should start with 0.5 itb if you want Gyökeres GW2 like you said before? You could drop Murillo to Williams

      1. Drop Dead Tsimikas
        • 14 Years
        3 months, 27 days ago

Esteve is also 15% owned, so if some casuals get disappointed by his laying an egg, his price could drop.

Dropping Murillo to Nico or Aina is a good shout.

    2. agueroo
      • 2 Years
      3 months, 27 days ago

I’m not convinced by Cucu, with Colwill injured I don’t think Chelsea’s defence will be great. I’d downgrade Salah or Haaland and reinvest in the midfield. I like ekitike and Bowen picks.

    Mateta or Pedro?

    Pedro:
    - Not on pens
    - Will get subbed off for Delap every game
    - Delap will start the occasional game
    - Chelsea have decent fixtures
    - Pedro will probably score pretty well, regardless of his minutes
    - Highly owned, so hauls will hurt
    - Most own Palmer, so its a double up in attack (if that changes things)

    Mateta:
    - On pens
    - Nailed
    - Tougher fixtures
    - Differential

the more I think about j pedro the more I believe there are better options elsewhere due to his minutes. therefore mateta

Oh one other thing, Palace / Glasner have a history of starting seasons slow with few wins / goals.

My current thinking is start with JP and possibly switch to Mateta GW4.

I had KDH as soon as I knew he was off to Everton, but switched to TOT’s Sarr post advice on here. What are thoughts now? He ripped it up for LEI (in Championship) before Chels move

Think I prefer Sunderlands Xhaka or Le Fee
Pape feels like an obvious pre season trap. Scoring goals..the manager lavishing praise on him. Smells like the makings of a bench player.
KDH did well in Championship, yes, but most do, big drop off in quality don't forget. He was with a Leicester the year before that when they got relegated, and was a below average premier league player. He's had a whole year off from football relaxing at Chelsea as well.
