Chelsea’s first team squad took to the field on Sunday and put in an impressive performance against AC Milan, less than 48 hours after defeating Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 on Friday night.

Our Scout Notes article rounds up the key takeaways from a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) perspective.

CHELSEA 4-1 AC MILAN

Delap Estevao

  • Goals: Joao Pedro, Delap (x2), OG
  • Assists: James, Neto, Estevao, Andrey Santos

MARESCA’S GW1 HINTS

Most Chelsea fans will tell you that the team selected by Enzo Maresca to start against AC Milan is likely to be the same side that lines up against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 1.

Big names such as Cole Palmer (£10.5m), Reece James (£5.5m) and Moises Caicedo (£5.5m) showed no signs of rustiness. The former was as lively as ever, roaming the pitch with freedom, and racked up four shots in the first half, including one that hit the crossbar from a direct free-kick.

Enzo Fernandez (£6.5m), who didn’t see any action on Friday and limped off in the FIFA Club World Cup final, came through 60 minutes unscathed.

Even with Levi Colwill’s (£5.0m) long-term injury, it seems unlikely that Wesley Fofana (£4.5m) will be thrown straight into action, despite his return to training. However, the looming threat of a player who will start when fully fit should be enough to put managers off Tosin (£4.5m) and Trevor Chalobah (£5.0m).

The latter appears to be ok after being substituted due to injury and was seen parading the UEFA Conference League trophy around the pitch after the match.

“He’s okay. It was too hot. So, he decided to go out!” – Enzo Maresca on Trevoh Chalobah

If Maresca wanted a stronger aerial presence to take on Crystal Palace’s trio of centre-backs, Liam Delap (£6.5m) did his case no harm. He scored twice off the bench.

One potential alteration to the apparent starting XI would be shifting Joao Pedro (£7.5m) to the left to accommodate the former Ipswich man, with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (£6.5m) dropping out.

DON’T SLEEP ON CUCURELLA

Marc Cucurella (£6.0m) has been overlooked by many FPL managers in pre-season with four £6.0m defenders having higher ownership at the time of writing.

Perhaps the successful ‘VisitMalta Weekender’ campaign has provided potential buyers with a reminder of his Fantasy upside. In just 118 minutes, Cucurella had three shots in the box, with one being deemed a big chance.

Above: Cucurella’s heatmaps v AC Milan (left) & v Bayer Leverkusen (right)

Encouragingly, the Spaniard was given license to bomb forward and pop up in the penalty box during attacks, no matter whether it was Malo Gusto (£5.0m) or James on the other side.

New signing Jarrel Hato (£5.0m) replaced Cucurella in both friendlies and despite the injury to Levi Colwill (£5.0m), has not been tried at left-centre back. However, it’s hard to imagine the Dutchman starting a Premier League match before the UEFA Champions League fixtures begin.

FIVE GOALS IN FIVE FOR PEDRO

Joao Pedro continued his red-hot form since his move to the Blues from Brighton with yet another goal. That’s now five in just 251 minutes across the Club World Cup and two pre-season friendly matches.

The Brazilian applied a guided-headed finish to a wonderful dribble and cross from Pedro Neto (£7.0m), who impressed himself, adding two shots on target and two key passes to the aforementioned assist.

The highest owned forward in FPL looks to be really enjoying himself in a Chelsea shirt and his minutes look secure against Crystal Palace’s notoriously low block. He could have had a second goal but was hauled down by Andrei Coubis, who was sent off as the last man.

“He has lots of qualities that previously, we probably lacked a little bit. He gives us lots of quality inside the box, especially against teams that play with low block, we need that quality with the small space” – Enzo Maresca on Joao Pedro

EXCITING ESTEVAO

Estevao (£6.5m) is not an FPL name for Gameweek 1 but it surely won’t be long until he is an option.

The Stamford Bridge faithful have rarely taken to an attacking player so quickly since Eden Hazard graced the hallowed turf.

The Brazilian prodigy looked at home despite his age, regularly showing off his dribbling ability, as well as winning the penalty that Delap converted (he would have had a tap-in were he not fouled). He also took corners in front of an adoring Mathew Harding stand, something he also did on Friday night.

In the round, it’s fair to say Chelsea have put to bed any narrative of a post-Club World Cup hangover. Two wins, six goals and a growing, optimistic, feel-good vibe at the club stands them in good stead for the Premier League campaign.

RMT pls? Pretty template but I think should be quite set. Diouf & Konsa rotates nicely but they will both start GW1 over Semenyo.

    Major dilemma:
    1) Frimpong
    2) VVD
    3) Others?

    A) Reijnders
    B) Anderson

    Sels // Dubravka
Frimpong N.Williams Diouf Konsa // Esteve
(S)alah Palmer Wirtz Reijnders // Semenyo
    Watkins JPedro // Guiu

Thoughts? Gone big at the back due to what you get out of such a small price compared to other positions.

    Sanchez Dubravka
    VVD RAN Gabriel Neco Guehi
    Salah Bruno Wirtz Reijnders King

You've definitely gone big at the back! Not for me personally, but do get the thinking / logic.

Bowen as a striker still doesn't look right to me and not sure how good a pick he'll be. For me, I think a lot relies on Bruno getting good points and personally I don't think he'll be value for money.

Bowen would have only lost 5 points as a forward (188 instead of 193) if he got exactly the same returns and DCs this season:

This is by no means finished, but currently on this draft with £1.0m in the bank

    Raya, Dubravka
Milenkovic, De Cuyper, Diouf, VdV, Esteve
    Palmer, Wirtz, Cunha, Mitoma, Arias
    Haaland, Watkins, Guiu

I'd be interested on thoughts of where best to use the £1.0m to improve / upgrade? I'm thinking either Mitoma or Arias in midfield, or getting a Liverpool defender in at £6.0m in place of Milenkovic.

    A truly elite league

This won't be for everyone as entry criteria are a ID of 4 million plus - but I feel sure that this is the forum for the relaxed dilettante that enjoys the slow lane and has only just registered a team and has not looked at RMTs.

I did contemplate opening it up to over eager Palace fans too but such is the lure of glory hunting that that was too broad. Instead I will look kindly on those who can express an informed interest in fish keeping. Which is your preferred shrimp? Do loaches school?

An entry list of 2/3 would be ideal. My interest this season is Fanteam so not wanting too much competition.

Salah's ownership continues to drop, and i can see why. Yes he's clearly going tot score goals, assists and be involved... but any more than the likes of Wirtz, Gakpo & Etikite and for an extra £6Mil? I'm starting to sway myself.

Not expecting him to get anywhere near the levels he returned last season. He'll still score well, but doubt he'll be such a standout and worth the money.

I'm kinda tempted to go for Reijnders. 5.5m is such a punt worthy price even if he plays deeper.

He scored 10 goals last season in the league. That's the same amount as Wirtz.

    Kell (Dub)
    Saliba, VVD, Diouf/(Richards) (Esteve)
    Palmer, Bruno, Wirtz, Gakpo (Anderson)
    Watkins, Gyokeres, Pedro

    B) premium

    Watkins, Pedro, Fulkrug

G+A last friendly, looks like he'll deliver it onto Gyok's head plus ping some shots off.

Gakpo the one to drop for me out of them lot, but depends how much Liverpool cover you want.

'83 model myself. Not sure Guiu is nailed to give you the odd goal. Saka or Marmoush to Reijnders will give enough for good upgrade to solid forward. Depends if you are set on 352

Here's mine, if I go down that route:

      Sels
      Cucurella Milenković RAN
      (V)Palmer Wirtz Saka Mbeumo Mitoma
      (C)Bowen Watkins
      .
      Dúbravka Guiu Rodon Estève
      .
      0.5 ITB

Captains ordered by GW: Bowen, Saka, Mbeumo, Wirtz, Watkins, Palmer, Watkins/Mbeumo

I've got a Salah draft too, and a Haaland draft. No idea which one will be there by GW1

Very nice. Are you confident on Guiu's minutes? I would consider Mbeumo downgrade in 343, but if I am convinced Guiu will start regularly, I will revert back to 352 like my 1st few drafts was...

If going without the 14+ duo, I'm quite sure I'll have a Man U midfielder in there for the captaincy rotation and individual points potential, even though I don't trust Man U as a team yet

I don't see the third striker that I'll cap often atm

And no, I don't think Guiu will start often, at least at the beginning of the season. But I'll only need an emergency sub, so I'm fine with 1 point off the bench before selling the flagged starter. I'm convinced that the extra points for mids will make up for the fewer bench points

Except someone like Mateta or Wood

The 3 most likely to change would be Frimpong Neco and Bruno to VVD Murillo and Wirtz but keen on a punt.

Munoz from the start or wait till week 4?

Got RAN, VVD and Cucu at the moment.

Big strikers, two big mids and solid cheaps

Who will play LB for Fulham with Robinson and Sessegnon out?

    Tempted by a Minteh punt.

I don’t know the answer to that question but I was on Minteh anyway and this solidifies my choice over Rutter if anything

I think I'll join you! I've been torn over Rutter v Minteh, too.

Are you rotating him with someone? I've noticed Bournemouth compliment Brighton fixtures wise.

No I’m not rotating I am planning to play him just in GW1 and GW3 as I’m going to FH2 and then WC4

Do we have any 4m defenders that are definitely going to start GW1 from Leeds or Sunderland?

      Rodon, Gudmundsson, Reinildo

Is Joao Pedro a trap? It feels like it. In fact I'm sure of it. He's in my team now for the first time right now. I want him but there's a ominous feeling, a familiar dread. It is inevitable.

Would you rather have Fernandes and Joao Pedro, or Watkins and Gordon (assuming he's fit)? Rest of the tream has Malen but no other Chelsea player.

        Sels, 4.0
Du Cruyper, Diouf, Gudmundsson, (Bijol, Esteve,)
        Salah, Fernandes, Wirtz, Rice, Malen,
        Haaland, Joao Pedro (Guiu)

        On the light-at-the-back-to-accomodate-Salah-and-Haaland hype.

Those two are my priority as i think they'll score the most over the first few gameweeks. I always seem to wildcard around gw4 so happy to do so if one of them is misfiring and a cheaper player looks better value.

Very little chance of clean sheets and defcon points there. But if both Haaland and Salah smash it, you'll be laughing...

Yeah. Sort of feels like a gamble but also, a fairly conservative one as those two have been the most consistently good players the last few seasons. Will see the lay of the land after a few ganeweeks and re-assess.

My biggest issue with him is I feel like he will never play 80+ mins. Could be total nonsense, but I imagine him being regularly subbed on 70ish for Delap.

I think Gordon could do really well this season.

I don't think i'm going for him in gw1 away to Villa, but looking at ways to then make a transfer or two to free up £1m and then change Mitoma (my current £6.5m pick) to Gordon early on.

Hi I haven’t played for 5 years now, any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Gakpo is my ‘differential’ who I think will have an exceptional season so please don’t suggest removing him.

    Sanchez
    Frimpong Gvardiol AWB
    Salah Anderson Mitoma Gakpo
    Piroe Haaland Bowen

    Dubravka, De Cuyper, Esteve, A.Ramsey

AWB a liability but de cuyper can start ahead of him most games.

Not much bench but looking decent overall.

Bold t go without any chelsea attack

Screw it im going Joao Pedro.

I keep trying to avoid the bandwagons preseason but he is just too good to resist.

Even though half is goals last year were pens, in five matches he has equalled his NPG from last year.

Cucurella and Strand Larsen or Neco and Joao Pedro?
