Are the Manchester City of old back?

A thumping 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday was certainly a good marker to put down as the Citizens attempt to rebuild after last season’s failings.

One man in particular stood out.

REIJNDERS RAMPANT

Tijjani Reijnders (£5.5m) had been the most impressive of Man City’s new signings at the Club World Cup.

And that was again the case on Saturday, with Reijnders producing a masterclass that left pundits purring and Fantasy managers scrabbling to buy him. He looks like being the first FPL ‘riser’ of the season.

Historically, he’s never been a prolific goalscorer. But 10 goals for AC Milan in 2024/25, his best total in a single league campaign, hinted at greater potential. Reijnders’ 77 shots last season ranked among the top 10 players in Serie A, indeed.

Fbref loosely likens him to Ilkay Gundogan (£6.5m) in terms of playing style – and it’s the old box-breaking Gundogan role that would be great for Reijnders in terms of FPL potential. That’s effectively what he was doing at Molineux, registering more penalty box touches (five) and shots (three) than any other City player bar Erling Haaland (£14.0m):

One burst into the area saw him lash in his first Premier League goal. Another saw him brilliantly tee up Haaland with a reverse pass for the Norwegian’s second of the evening.

“He has an incredible quality to make runs in behind, to attack the gaps. It’s really, really good, good finishing.” – Pep Guardiola on Tijjani Reijnders

There will be times when Guardiola uses Reijnders differently. We saw that in the Club World Cup, especially against Wydad. There will be times when Pep Guardiola uses a ’10’ ahead of him. The City boss said this after full-time on Saturday, saying that he would “need” Rayan Cherki (£6.5m) in certain games against low blocks.

“The talent from Cherki is unbelievable in smaller spaces, the creativity in the final third is extraordinary and sometimes, in certain games, of course, we will need him.” – Pep Guardiola

There will be times when Reijnders ‘assists the assister’ more than sets up a goal himself. We witnessed that against Juventus this summer, and it happened again for Haaland’s opener, with Reijnders superbly setting Rico Lewis (£5.0m) away.

And, of course, there will be times when he doesn’t start. No one is immune to the odd rest. But the early indications – no City player started more Club World Cup games that the Netherlands international – are that he will be integral to Pep’s set-up in most weeks.

Reijnders

Bigger games – of which City have a few coming up – might actually suit Reijnders. Not only would Guardiola be less likely to drop a pivotal player but you’d imagine that he’ll also use a ‘six’ (Nico Gonzalez (£6.0m)/Rodri (£6.5m)) and Bernardo Silva (£6.5m) in midfield, allowing Reijnders the freedom the box-crash. Against someone like Burnley at home, Reijnders might be part of a midfield two, as he was against Wydad.

HAALAND OFF TO HIS ANNUAL FLYER

There’s not as much tactical analysis needed on the big man up top.

We know exactly what he’s all about: he’ll plonk himself in the middle up front (the pass map below is pretty comical) and get a lot of chances, both missed and taken. There were six in all yesterday, including a header from very close range that he couldn’t direct on goal.

He always starts the season well, scoring in Gameweek 1 of all four of his seasons at City. In the three years before this one, he’s hit a hat-trick by Gameweek 5.

He’s never sustained the ridiculous early-season scoring rate as the campaign goes on but there always seems to be an extra spring in his step at the start of a season.

AIT-NOURI NOT QUITE AS GUNG-HO BUT…

Just when we thought Guardiola was going back to orthodox full-backs, the inversion returns.

Lewis was the man inverting into the ’10’ here, and having a cracking game while doing it.

Coupled with Jeremy Doku (£6.5m) holding width on the left flank, it meant that Ait-Nouri was a bit more reserved. He still cracked off a couple of shots, but didn’t touch the ball in the Wolves box once.

However, with greater defensive responsibility came defensive contribution (DC) points! Ait-Nouri sailed over the threshold of 10 clearances, blocks, interceptions and tackles (CBITs), getting 15 in all.

James Trafford (£5.0m) started between the posts, meanwhile, a day after Guardiola insisted that Ederson (£5.5m) was his number one. Ederson was ill, apparently, although it remains to be seen if that was just a smokescreen amid talk of a move away.

ENCOURAGEMENT FOR STRAND LARSEN

Most owners of Wolves players wouldn’t have expected much from Saturday’s game.

But Jorgen Strand Larsen (£6.5m) put in an encouraging showing, going close to scoring on a few occasions and picking up some good positions in the City box.

Ki-Jana Hoever (£4.0m) got the nod at right wing-back as expected – but while this was a better-than-expected display, another option in that position is anticipated to arrive in the coming weeks.

Definitely fancying a bit of Reijnders and Ait Nouri! Might pull a wildcard tonight if I see enough information in the other games.

If City concede as they were very close to doing, the narrative would have been that Ait Nouri is not nearly attacking enough and that his DC points were an anomaly. I still don't trust City's defense and there are better options in that price bracket. Reijnders looks like prime Gundogan 2.0 though.

I transferred Rejnders in for Wirtz. Knee jerky, I know, but Liv points will be spread and two next fixtures aren't screaming for goals. No need to WC just to avoid making a transfer or even taking -8.

Liverpool, Arsenal and City conceded the least shots last season, so they’re far more likely to keep a CS. Gvardiol was the highest scoring defender, while the others were rotated. I’d reconsider who I trust in your place. 🙂

Gvardiol scored 5 goals though. You see RAN getting many goal involvements with the way he was playing and Doku suffocating the left wide areas?

Why will you do a wildcard this early ? Would that not be a waste ? I’m thinking the same as I’ve made a big mistake with my squad and I regret it already ! I don’t know what to do …

I play it early every year and I usually regret it. We have less than one week of data - I think it pays to hold off for now and wait til at least the first break.

Suppose counterpoint is that we get an effective WC in GW16 now so a much shorter period to account for than traditionally, before you can make wholesale changes again.

Very early to judge of course but whilst City looked great going forward you feel that teams with a more aggressive and cohesive midfield (Arsenal, Notts F, Newcastle etc) will cause many problems for them through the middle, can see them conceding a lot this season

Risk is he plays, gets an injury, spurs etc drop out, he doesn't risk playing again before next window, and you can't replace him as you'd like in mid-term window.

Yeah I understood what you meant 🙂
Thing is Glasner only has a small squad to work with because of injuries and the crappy job ownership have done since the transfer window opened.
Dougie Freedman left in March and a replacement has still not been announced, so there is no one in place to do all the prep work a sporting director would normally take care of before the transfer window opens. Hence there have only been two new signings, and one of them is a GK!

I felt Watkins Rogers and Konsa were solid picks, so was it Villa being bad or Newcastle being good?

Yep that is true and a risk but I reckon Slot/Salah will work out a way to make the most of Salah with a new type of full back behind him, he should get around the edge of the box more, hopefully if Ekitike can drag the CB's away

Yes of course. They are premium players for a reason. My strategy was to pick both of them first and build my team around them and if one had a few blanks I could afford to buy anyone in the game. Strategy is working so far.

I think the coverage tactic will work better for Liverpool than Chelsea. Palmer is quite central to anything Chelsea do, with Liverpool we’re seeing a shift towards relying on other attackers. Even Diaz was actually a great pick for some parts of last season, but then Salah was so incredible he became essential…that’s gonna be hard to repeat.

Don't really get this logic. Yes, Reijnders and Bobb were creating all the chances yesterday but when Foden/Cherki start there will be other assisters. Not disputing that Reijnders looks a great option but this ratio theory isn't going to hold up

Wirtz looks very lightweight. Could be more than a few weeks for him to come truly.

With that said, I think everyone in the Liverpool forward line will tick along and I’d only really look at moving on if we’re in for some prices drops/rises for players around him.

Watkins similar. I think he’ll do fine if you stick with him but if Pedro or Gyokeres goes hard today, I think he’ll drop and have a hard time recovering that value.

Their price gives you the opportunity to wait a little longer (international break after GW3) and still have time to sell them for Mbuemo/Cunha, Eze, Rogers, Semenyo, 6.5 mids or in Watkins case for Ekitike, 7.5 strikers or even Gyokeres. Dont rush, they are very high wuality players, especially in Watkins case who plays against Brentford away and Palace home next two.

      The obvious

Turn them into Rich and Palmer. Saka would do for other people who thought that Chelsea might actually score today and that Liverpool would be a scary defence to play against week 3.

Though Salah to Wharton still tempts me.

I don't have Watkins, but I have already sold Wirtz for Reindeer. Basically I am trying to build TV since Reindeer is very close of being 4.7 next Saturday imo. Newcastle didn't look good, but away to them isn't likely goal fest and then it's against Arsenal. Gw4 vs Burnley could be entry point for Liv attack again. I'm annoyed at myself for not going with my Salah-less draft that I was stuck between till the last moment. Salah may have got a goal but he's now playing much further out wide, and while he has penalties Ekitite seems to be the target in the middle, and Gakpo will offer similar threat to Salah. I'll see how the next few games go but I'm certainly looking at bringing those two in alongside Haaland and going without Salah. Just don't think he'll be the only one hauling given the change in tactics.

Bowen looked good, as usual everything dangerous went through him. Watkins ok but can't draw many conclusions from the game, two good teams cancelled each other out

Every year during the lead up to GW1 I forget how painful this 'game' is. Then it smacks me right in the chops - Tosin out, 1pt from sub Hartman coming on. Fails from Wirtz, Frimpong, Watkins....Apologies in advance to any other Joao Pedro, Palmer and KDH owners. We haven't even got @RandyShafter playing/posting this year to cheer us all up. It's the hope that get ya!

Not to be mean but after furious spending by Chelsea it’s quite ridiculous the centre back pairing for GW1 turned out to be Acheampong and Chalobah with Sanchez in goal. I don’t think they’re a serious team.

Chelsea - Tosin drops out due a minor injury (info post GW deadline. Everyone else as expected

Palace - Hughes comes in for injured Kamada. Everyone else as expected.

Forest - start with tried and tested 4231 setup from last season

Brentford - Kelleher fit to start the game. Schade makes the bench.

Game state dependant - Jesus comes on for Wood and stick with 4231 setup or 442 with both up top if chasing the game

True, but a good one. I think a lot of promoted teams are just too naive when they come up but Brentford should know what they need to do. That said, I don't know much about Keith Andrews, except his magnificent Mr Whippy hair

So the questions for Brentford are:

            - Whether Schade, Thiago, Ouattara can replicate or better Schade, Wissa, Mbeumo?
            - Whether Kelleher is an upgrade on Flekken?
            - Whether Andrews can replicate or better Frank?

I think they'll surprise people. Backline is still together. Kelleher is certainly no worse than Flekken. Dango coming in could play wide or through the middle potentially if Thiago isnt working out or he gets another issue. He may be one to monitor in fpl. Milambo could be a good signing too.
