Chip Strategy

This season, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have one Wildcard, Free Hit, Bench Boost and Triple Captain chip to use before Gameweek 19’s deadline, necessitating a strategy of early usage.

Some of you will no doubt already have a good idea of when you will be deploying your chips. But for those still unsure when to hit ‘activate’, here are a few ideas.

Keeping in mind that everyone will be topped up to five free transfers in Gameweek 16, here is the mindset behind when to use each chip (excluding Triple Captain, which is player-related rather than team).

EACH CHIP’S LOGIC

FPL 2025/26: Double chips as Assistant Manager gets the boot

Wildcard

Fixtures form the rationale for all three of these. The ideal Wildcard is based around mass fixture swings, where great runs begin for some teams and end for others.

Our pre-season ‘jump on, jump off’ article helps with identifying such moments.

Fixtures aside, the Wildcard is also a great cure-all when your team has racked up too many injuries, suspensions and rotation risks for free transfers to deal with.

Free Hit

If you have one of the very expensive Mohamed Salah (£14.5m) and Erling Haaland (£14.4m) pair, try activating this when the other has one irresistible fixture amidst less essential ones. An attempt to both have and eat cake.

The Free Hit can also be about multiple popular FPL teams having the same tough weekend, often versus each other.

Bench Boost

If you’re a manager who prefers 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 formations, it means 75% of your typical bench is defensive. So it makes sense to Bench Boost when several cheap £4.0m and £4.5m players at the back have appealing fixtures.

Of course, ‘lesser’ sides being against each other usually means that the ‘big’ ones are facing off too, which isn’t ideal for the others. Gameweek 8, for example.

THREE SPECIFIC PLANS

GW8 Wildcard, GW9 Bench Boost, GW15 Free Hit

October’s international break comes before Gameweek 8, coinciding with positive Liverpool and West Ham fixture swings, plus the negative ones awaiting Aston Villa, Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur.

Slightly earlier, in Gameweek 7, things get good for Arsenal and bad for Nottingham Forest.

Which FPL chip strategy is best for you? 1

Here, managers give themselves a chance to maximise the Bench Boost by using it straight afterwards.

In Gameweek 9, the £4.0m Burnley and Leeds names get to face Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United.

Free Hitting in Gameweek 15 means stocking up on Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle versus the promoted trio. All while knowing that, before they meet again, lots of free transfers become available and Salah will be at AFCON.

GW8 Wildcard, GW11 Free Hit, GW14 Bench Boost

Alternatively, the Bench Boost could wait until Gameweek 14. A time when so many popular teams have good fixtures, yet it’s not great for lower teams, meaning some cheap starters need to emerge from higher up the league between now and then.

As for Gameweek 11, it’s the weekend of Man City v Liverpool and Tottenham v Manchester United. Free Hit users can ditch those names and go big on Chelsea, Forest and West Ham, at home to Wolves, Leeds and Burnley.

GW11 Free Hit, GW13 Wildcard, GW14 Bench Boost

A fortnight break also precedes Gameweek 12, but a leading idea in the Fantasy community is to Wildcard in Gameweek 13. This allows long-term ownership of superb Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle fixtures.

In Gameweek 14, these face Sunderland, Fulham and Spurs, while prospects also look good for Arsenal, Chelsea and Crystal Palace assets.

TRIPLE CAPTAIN OPTIONS

As for the Triple Captain, you could pair one of the following with whichever strategy you opt for:

  • Gameweek 10: Bukayo Saka/Viktor Gyokeres – Burnley (a)
  • Gameweek 13: Erling Haaland – v Leeds (h)
  • Gameweek 14: Mohamed Salah/Alexander Isak – v Sunderland (h)
  • Gameweek 15: Erling Haaland – v Leeds (h)
  • Gameweek 19: Alexander Isak – v Leeds (h)/Erling Haaland – v Sunderland (a)

I don't think Sarr injury was as bad as 1st feared. I think D is best option followed by A.

No one gonna trust Forest defensively under big Ange

There is so much noise at the start of this season. Like noisier than any other season I've ever seen. People are talking about fixtures, bench boosts, FHs, WCs, it's all over the place and people have quite different teams so their needs differ from team to team greatly.

But the one thing that I'm constantly seeing is that people aren't thinking enough about whether a player is good for scoring FPL points.

The recommendations for Harvey Elliott on X, Gyokeres on FH this week, and the discussion of DC point defenders and their worth often neglect to think about the most important thing about whether they're a good pick or not... Will they score points?

Elliott is an attractive pick on paper. He's 5.4m, low owned, has good fixtures. But there is absolutely 0 reason to go there now imo. He's joining a new team that have performed poorly. He's playing against an Everton team that look good so far this year at least from an attacking pov, and there's no way to know if he's nailed yet alone if he's a good FPL pick. In fact, as a Blackburn fan, I rate him and have seen him play a lot more than most people and I am not convinced he's a good FPL asset. And yet because he checks all the boxes for what you could want in a mid in a moment of uncertainty I see him being touted a lot.

Then there's Gyokeres. If anyone has actually watched him play the last few games for Arsenal and for Sweden, he has not looked like he's gelled into this Arsenal team yet. Calafiori, Rice and Odegaard have had more goal attempts than he has over the first 3 games (he's only had 3). Yes, he's on pens which raises his value a bit, but I still see little indication that he's worth buying right now at 9m other than chasing his potential. Watkins has had 8 goal attempts by comparison and has looked more likely. He also has better fixtures in the short term and he's proven FPL player who's gotten 15+ goals for the last 3 seasons.

As for DC defenders, I'm more focused on the raw point numbers. I rebutted an argument from another poster pre-season that DCs are just a fad and that attacking defenders were still the way to go by highlighting this - Tarkowski got 36 DC points last season. That's the equivalent of 12 assists. And boosts his score by 25% more. That's an enormous amount. And we've seen 4.5m gems already this season in Andersen, VdB, Senesi that are pulling in great DC numbers so far. Someone was asking whether it's worth it to pay the extra for Munoz or just go Lacroix/Richards if it's the short term. Assuming that Lacroix gets DC points every game and Munoz doesn't. Munoz would have to score a goal in the next two games to surpass Lacroix in points just from DCs. So effectively, you'd be paying 0.6m more hoping he scores a goal in the next few good games to make him worth more than Lacroix. I can't see it being worthwhile if it's only a few matches pre-WC personally. Would rather go for Lacroix or Richards if you need to save a bit of cash.

Sure but he can get DC points. Also Munoz is more reliable than Lacroix for open play attacking returns.

Just not a fan of this assumption you've made to get your point across.

"Assuming that Lacroix gets DC points every game and Munoz doesn't. Munoz would have to score a goal in the next two games to surpass Lacroix in points just from DCs"

Alright that's fair. It's probably more nuanced. But I still stand by my point. With 0.6m in saving. Is Munoz's attacking ability worth that much more than Lacroix? Without the DCs I think it's probably justified but with it now this season, I think the pendulum swings the other way.

Lacroix - higher chance of DCs, cheaper
Munoz - higher chance of attacking returns, fewer DCs, more expensive

I don't think the possibility of attacking returns outweighs the overall contributions possible from Lacroix.

    Sels
    Porro, Cucurella, Konsa
    Bruno, Semenyo, Gakpo, Rejnders
    Haaland, J. Pedro, Watkins

    Dubravka, P.M.Sarr, Rodon, N.Williams

Planed from the start to FH this round, getting Salah for cap, more Liverpool in general, Arsenal and Palace. I'm not sure if it is worth it now because Haaland looks like a better cap these days. Thoughts?

P.s. Also have 1 ft left and 1,5 itb. could just go for Williams to Munoz....

Having both Salah and Haaland is looking like being a massive differential (assuming you can get the captaincy right)? Seeing lots of WC teams with one or the other, or planning FH based on when the one they don't have has a great fixture. I'm just fearful of getting the captain wrong! On Haaland at the moment. I think I'll have knots in my stomach all day Sunday

Common strategy would be to go with only one iof the 14m premiums and perma cap, I think. But given the plethora of attractive mid- and budget priced midfielders and defenders this season (DC points!) , it could still be viable as your optimal team may leave extra budget. The thing is , normally the 14m premiums are only worth it in terms if you regularly captain them.
Personally, I'm going without Salah and waiting to get Isak in.

Double Liverpool defence looks an odd choice to me right now, and those are probably the last 2 I'd go for even I was doing that. But if you insist... yes to your question, would never bench those first 3. Also Rodon is a better 4.0 than Esteve

I'd agree with that (although not necessarily the best GK from an FPL POV) but I can't see myself going with anything other than double Liverpool attack, and actually don't mind holding off on their defence entirely for a bit longer til they settle in

As a wildcarding Liverpool fan I'd agree. I think we'll be leaking goals at least for a few weeks. Obviously I hope we'll get it together, but I think it's more likely that we'll first get it together offensively and only after that defensively.

Not saying Virgil or Alisson are necessarily bad picks though. Just that using two of the Liverpool slots on defense rather than offense feels counter-intuitive right now at least.

Makes sense. But until one of them is injured, only salah is 90 minute-player. And he is expensive
For now gakpo is enough for me

Not sure I'd want to be wildcarding this week...?
With Isak primed to arrive, Haaland v Burnley coming up GW6, Pedro looking the part at Palmer's expense...lots going on.
I think a Haaland/Isak/Pedro team with Saka could be on the cards soon. Haaland could be essential as a secure route into City, prob with Reijnders. Isak could make Salah redundant and be more secure than the other Liverpool options. The same with Pedro for Palmer..

    Poss GW6 team

I just don't see a scenario whereby Salah will ever be redundant I'm afraid, you could argue his output will go up with Isak finishing the chances he creates. He's also the prime captaincy option this week.

He is the prime captain option this week, but long term if going with both Haaland and Salah will give you a headache, as you're bound to get the captaincy wrong every other GW and then the extra £ is not worth it

Redundant as in he's 4.0m more than Isak who may match his output and even steal his points. Maybe Isak with Haaland is an easier fit than trying to shoehorn Salah and Haaland if Isak is matching Salah..? Then this leaves money for a Saka/Palmer etc...?

Who would you start this week, based on chances of starting?

    A) Elliott
    B) Xavi Simons

B of the two. But tbh I think it might be a week too early. Put him in on my WC but benching this week

I wouldnt buy him if i hadnt had him. Lots of risk involved with European games and different style of play by Postecoglu

Especially with Wood being like 50 years old too

    Hi All, G2G on WC?

Plan is to downgrade Salah in GW6 and upgrade Mateta with Isak and King with Arsenal.

    Raya (Dubs)
    Munoz Sensei Cash (Gud) (Reneildo)
    Salah Semenyo Grealish Elliot (King)
    Haaland JP Mateta

Thinking it has to be a Salah punt. Who are you on?

Still not decided. After seeing Haaland scoring 5 live here in Oslo this week, I’m slightly biased 😉

Haha fair! Either could haul or blank but Haaland’s performance is tempting

        Thoughts on Cash to VDV?

I'm having a disastrous season so far, so not sure how much my opinion is worth currently - ha.

Either way, an extra Palace defender might be worth considering Guehi/Richards (or Lacroix if affordable).

Cash has the fixtures but Villa don't look right at the moment, so I'd go VDV if you don't want to risk double Palace def.

Ha, me too! Hence the WC this week.

I’ve been tempted by another palace. Would have to be Guehi or Richards but could be worth the punt.

Maresca says Palmer trained for the first time yesterday with #CFC. Will train again later and decision taken after that.

      Full quote more mixed:
Maresca on Palmer: "Cole did part of the session yesterday for the first time. Today, in the afternoon, we have a session and we are going to try with him, otherwise he will be out again. When he is available, we need to think about managing him, because of the amount of games.

I actually think he is using this as an excuse to be able to rotate Palmer due to poor performances as opposed to resting

Anderson or P.Sarr to start. Need one to start and one on bench.
Or a P.Sarr alternative but only got 0.1 ITB.

True! However Bournemouth have great fixtures and I will probably look to get rid of Munoz by GW6

Probably not ideal for Palmer owners....

Maresca on Palmer: "Cole did part of the session yesterday for the first time. Today, in the afternoon, we have a session and we are going to try with him, otherwise he will be out again. When he is available, we need to manage him, because of the amount of games"
