Goals + assists imminent! Who is ‘due’ in FPL Gameweek 9?

You’ve probably heard about Joe’s much-liked ‘Goals Imminent’ table. You might listen to his and Marc’s Fantasy Football Scout podcast of the same name. Now, Goals Imminent is here in article form!

Heading towards Gameweek 9 of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), these Members Area statistics identify some underachieving players who look ‘due’ for a goal and/or assist.

Naturally, we’ll attempt to assess whether they’re unlucky, suffering a rare blip, or just aren’t particularly good.

LAST WEEK’S SUCCESSES

FPL pre-season: Ekitike + Frimpong goals, Mateta pen

We predicted a Jean-Philippe Mateta (£7.6m) goal, saying he can’t keep missing big chances at this rate.

Well, the Crystal Palace forward replied by scoring a hat-trick versus Bournemouth and spurned three other huge opportunities. On Saturday alone, his expected goals (xG) tally was 3.67.

Bryan Mbeumo‘s (£8.0m) opener at Anfield was also anticipated, before Cody Gakpo (£7.5m) equalised; the Dutchman outdid his envisioned assist.

GOALS IMMINENT

The first table shows players who’ve accumulated at least nine shots over the latest four Gameweeks, but scored no more than one goal.

          I wouldn’t. Caliaflori has great stats too and was a slight offside from a goal the weekend. I have both Gabriel and Caliaflori and think that’s the way to go

      could do with having 5 arsenal slots or something 🙂

      maybe not the week to do it, palace normally very strong at defending crosses. but if you dont want to be paying 6.6+ for gabriel then maybe

          I wouldn’t I already sold him early this week for Wolt. I knew those 2 goals were going to be nothing goals. Watched them back The first one blocked and creeps in the second one hit his leg. He took about 15 minutes to turn and shoot for the first chance. Not on form don’t want him.

        I really like this Arsenal team and the way they play. Not a negative spin of Arsenal at all but Arteta was literally on the line at some points with Athletico players walking around him for throw ins. Of course some managers come out of the technical area at times but he was outside it more than in it!

      Reposting what I put yesterday. I do lean Saka longer term but don't think it's a given that Saka is much better right now and worth using 2 FTs to switch them...

      Was watching a Saka highlights reel of all his actions vs. Fulham and seemed like quite a lot of the 6 chances created and 0.55 xA were directed towards Gyokeres

      To me the narrative that is creeping in that Gyokeres is a sell and Saka is essential could be a bit premature
      In a defcon world it feels like we should value goal threat over assist threat more than perhaps we did in the past (I know Saka got defcon this week but surely that's an anomaly)
      Here I find it striking that in terms of minutes per xG ex. penalties, Saka is 128th among all players who've played 90+ minutes this season, similar to Keane and Stach. Gyokeres is 29th.
      I don't think the penalty debate is completely resolved either, I wouldn't be surprised to see Gyok take one particularly if he wins it and if he is still in a bit of a goal drought
      Random thoughts anyway as someone with Gyok and talking myself out of the 2 FTs needed to switcheroo the players

        I got Saka on WC, but i am now thinking of moving him out: Pedro + Saka + Rodon to Mateta + Gakpo + Califiori. An additional Arsenal defender might prove to be better than Saka.
