As you are all undoubtedly aware, Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers will receive extra free transfers in Gameweek 16 to help prepare for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Prominent FPL names such as Mohamed Salah (£14.2m), Bryan Mbeumo (£8.5m), Ismaila Sarr (£6.7m) and Iliman Ndiaye (£6.6m) will all be jetting off, but how exactly do we get the most out of the transfer top-up from a Fantasy perspective?

We take a closer look in this article.

USE ALL FREE TRANSFERS IN GAMEWEEK 15

This is the most important part.

Regardless of how many you have, make sure you’ve used all your free transfers by the Gameweek 15 deadline on Saturday 6 December 11:00 GMT.

This approach will give you an extra four free transfers, as well as your normal weekly one, for Gameweek 16.

But if, for example, you rolled two going into Gameweek 16, you’d only get a) your normal weekly transfer and b) two additional ones.

ATTACK SHORT-TERM FIXTURES

Safe in the knowledge that we have five free transfers in Gameweek 16, you could use the upcoming period, i.e. Gameweeks 12-15, to play more aggressively, targeting shorter-term punts.

Above, we’ve sorted the Fixture Ticker by difficulty for this timeframe, with the easiest runs at the top and the most challenging at the bottom.

For example, you could look to bring in a low-owned player from Brighton and Hove Albion for the next four Gameweeks, such as Yankuba Minteh (£6.0m). Fabian Hurzeler’s side are set to play three home matches during this run, facing Brentford, Aston Villa and West Ham United, in addition to an away game at Nottingham Forest.

You can subsequently transfer the player out in Gameweek 16, knowing you have a viable exit plan, which coincides with Brighton’s fixtures taking a turn for the worse (liv/SUN/ars).

He has a higher ownership (16.1%), but the same applies to Crystal Palace’s Daniel Munoz (£5.7m). Acquire him for wol/MUN/bur/ful, and then simply transfer him out for MCI/lee/TOT.

Alternatively, you may wish to target one of the players heading to AFCON, such as Salah, Mbeumo or Sarr, due to their favourable upcoming schedules. With five free transfers in Gameweek 16, they can be easily replaced when they depart without incurring a points hit.

MINI-WILDCARD IN GAMEWEEK 16…

You could use your five free transfers in Gameweek 16 to play a mini-Wildcard, removing the deadwood and bringing in players who have favourable fixture runs.

For planning purposes, here’s the schedule sorted by difficulty in Gameweeks 16-22, which covers the entirety of AFCON.

There might be some new names to consider, like Nico O’Reilly (£4.9m) and Benjamin Sesko (£7.3m), who could benefit from Rayan Ait-Nouri (£5.7m), Mbeumo and Amad Diallo (£6.3m) going to AFCON.

We’ll be discussing those two players, along with others who could prosper from similar situations, in an upcoming article.

… OR KEEP THOSE FREE TRANSFERS AND ROLL

You do not need to use all your free transfers in Gameweek 16, however.

If your team is already in a good place, the transfers can be saved for future Gameweeks and used whenever needed.

They’ll surely come in use during the hectic festive period, which frequently brings fixture congestion and player rotation.

The extra transfers will provide you with greater flexibility to manage this situation, along with any injuries or suspensions that may arise.

STOCK UP ON PLAYERS FOR A BENCH BOOST

For those who haven’t played the chip already, you could use the extra transfers to help prepare for a Bench Boost.

Gameweek 18 carries appeal, as this is the only remaining round in which Burnley, Leeds United and Sunderland all have decent fixtures.

Additionally, it’s a good week for budget midfielders such as Granit Xhaka (£5.1m), Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall (£4.9m) and Josh King (£4.5m).

Gameweek 18 is, of course, a Boxing Day-28th December round, so the usual caveats apply, i.e. rotation/minute management and lack of team news.

Deadzone, so one for the morning. During the England game there was repeated references to the number 6 position (holding mid). I get the 10 and the 9, but after 45 years of watching football, i have never ever heard of the "6" position. Literally never. The worst part is that to me that number means Moore, Hansen, Adams and many others, who are clearly central defenders, so not only is it new BS but it is also incorrect. Rant over! x

If 10 was an attacking mid or playmaker and 8 was an all round central midfielder then 6 is the deeper midfielder.
        7 is a winger

It sounds like U are either trolling or very dumb. So you say you've been watching football for 45 years yet don't understand the old numbers with regards to positions.
It is based on the old 442 systems which every single team in existence played pre 90s. 9 + 10 up top 7 +11 wingers and 6 + 8 in the middle with the 6 being more defensive. Think your brain is made of BS

Wow mate. You are quite hateful aren’t you. I am talking old numbers. 5 and 6 in defence 4 in midfield. If you don’t believe me you could try some research. More significantly my rant was somewhat tongue in cheek, but your response was quite aggressive. x

Bro. I watched football almost 30 years, I know what you're talking about. 6 is usually wear by a defender. But... If we count 1 up to 11(GK is no1). Then I can understand the logic here.
Based on past, you may assumed that no3 is a left back (ashley cole, etc). No 2 is a right back (cafu) yet Saliba wear no2 at arsenal.
It's just number preference for every player is different. Just go by a simple way, counting number from 1.

I may lived in the past, but I want to adapt to this present

I've been watching football for longer than any of you, and playing for longer than most (retired at 55). The "old" number 6 shirt, and I still have one of my old ones upstairs, was worn by the "left-half" - a midfilder and certainly not an outright defender. The No 5 was the centre half and the #4 was right half. However, in the modern context, I understand that when a player is referred to as a 6 it's meant as a defensive midfielder who sits in front of the back line - like a Caicedo or Elliot Anderson. Declan Rice is a typical box-to-box midfielder #8, and a typical #10 (if such a beast exitss in this chnaging world) could be Morgan Rogers.
I'm happy to use the modern nomenclature - it's never going back to the oldern days.

                Quite right.
Before 4-4-2, the standard formation back in the fifties used to be 2-3-5, so 2 and 3 were the full-backs, 5 was the centre half, 4 and 6 were the wing halves, 9 was the centre forward, 8 and 10 were the inside forwards, and 7 and 11 were the wing forwards.
There were of course occasional variations, such as deep-lying centre forwards (the 'Revie plan'), deep-lying inside forwards (the 'W-formation' favoured by Wolves) and the wingless wonders introduced by Alf Ramsey.
Arsenal introduced the stopper centre half in the thirties - a defensive midfielder who always stayed in his own half. Then when big Ron Yeats retired in the early sixties, Bill Shankly decided to replace him with two central defenders.

I’ve been going to/watching games since the early 70s. And I remember things how you describe them. 5 & 6 were invariably central defenders, 4 a mid (often a more defensive type but not always), 8 or 10 used to line up alongside the centre-forward and 7 and 11 were wingers.

I could be wrong (I would describe myself as “old school”), but it’s only in the last 10-15 years ago that the 10 (playmaker), 8 (box-to-box) and 6 (defensive mid) started to be used in the Premier League, regardless of the number on the back of the players shirts.

Not sure if it's the influence of Barca and Spanish football on tactics and coaches at all levels over the past 20 years. The 6 is now the defensive mid position in common footballing parlance.

Growing up in 80s UK with 4-4-2 and no squad numbers, the centre backs were 5 and 6, and the defensive midfielder was 4. Baresi is my favourite centre back and he was a 6.

Not sure why some seem to be trying to gaslight you, or upset about you remembering the past.

You are right that the first 25 years or so that you watched football the No 6 was a defender, but in the following 20 years this has changed to the number for the central defensive midfielder. If you are as fervent a football fan as you claim to be then I found it unlikely that you have never heard of the '6' position being (nowadays) used for the CDM / holding mid.

Just to confuse things Steve Bruce wore 4 lol. But yes 5/6 were generally CBs.

It's just modern football parlance like 'the press', 'transitions' etc.
A no6 is a defensive/deep lying midfielder i.e. Nobby Stiles. Could also be a deep lying playmaker too like a Pirlo. Referred to as a regista.
An 8 is referred to as an attacking centre mid or a box to box mid.
A 10 is a trequartista/2nd striker/in the hole playmaker. Spanish speakers call this position an enganche which means the hook. Someone like a Riquelme.
