This season we’ll be running a couple of weekly articles which focus specifically on our two supported Fantasy games, the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and the Sky Sports Fantasy game. While those articles will differ in content, they both give us the opportunity to recognise the front-runners in our respective leagues, giving a nod to our community’s outstanding Fantasy managers. We’ll also use them to examine trends and patterns in the games, with particularly emphasis on transfer activity. We start with this week’s FPL focus…

Scout League Standings

David Byers leads the way with a monster 95 point haul on the board already. Michu and Mladen Petrov chipped in with 34 points between them, while a trio of City players earned him 14 points. With three Chelsea players still to feature tomorrow evening – including captain Branislav Ivanovic – he looks set to improve upon his overall ranking of 19 already.

Sitting in second place, Steve Woods is another to benefit hugely from Petric and Michu, with Ivanovic also handed the armband. He also heads into tomorrow’s match with three Blues players, though while our top two both have Juan Mata, Steve has Ashley Cole to David’s Fernando Torres.

Mark Durham is in third place, thanks to Michu and Petric amongst others; he has two Chelsea players for the Reading clash, though Eden Hazard arrives at the Bridge with the armband. Will Chen is next up on 93 points, despite having Fernando Torres as captain – Michu, Petric, Samir Nasri, Kevin Nolan and Ivanovic all returned double figures for him, while Neil Glenister completes the top five – again, Petric, Michu and an armband on Ivanovic was crucial to his cause.

For the Contributors, Greek Fan has been quickest out the blocks. West Ham pair Jussi Jaaskelainen and Kevin Nolan returned 16 points, while Ivanovic, Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez all produced attacking returns. He still has three Chelsea players for tomorrow, with Torres handed the armband.

The Market Trends

Unsurprisingly, Michu leads the way with almost 100,000 Fantasy managers snapping up the Spaniard’s services on the back of his 18 point debut haul at QPR. With Swansea now facing five home games in the next seven, Michu has increased in price to 6.6 in FPL and, given his side’s added attacking thrust under Michael Laudrup, the trend in ownership looks set to continue. Nathan Dyer is also proving popular – priced at 5.5, he has been acquired by nearly 55,000 teams since returning a brace and maximum bonus points at Loftus Road.

Carlos Tevez has proven to be the second most popular Fantasy target. With doubts surrounding Sergio Aguero’s knee problem, Tevez has been transferred in by over 80,000 Fantasy managers and is the only other player to have risen in cost, up to 9.1 after his opener against Southampton. Mladen Petric has picked up 41,000 new suitors after his 16 point haul against Norwich on Saturday but, with three away trips in the next four, including a Gameweek 2 visit to Old Trafford, he could struggle to justify the investment right now.

The respective displays of Branislav Ivanovic and Eden Hazard against Wigan on Sunday has seen the pair make their way into a combined 84,000 teams, despite the fact that Chelsea have a blank Gameweek 3 on the horizon. Newcastle pair Hatem Ben Arfa and Demba Ba make their way to the Bridge this weekend and have also featured highly in Fantasy managers’ estimations after they both found the net against Spurs – a combined total of almost 68,000 have jumped on board for the Magpies duo.

Unsurprisingly, Sergio Aguero is top for transfers out, with over 109,000 already selling on the Argentine after he pulled up early with a knee problem against Southampton. Juan Mata and Fernando Torres have both been subject to significant sales – despite having a game against Reading tomorrow, many Fantasy managers have already lost patience, with a combined 30,000 shipping the Blues pair out.

Ramires’ absence through illness at the DW on Sunday has seen 35,000 part company with the Brazilian – priced at 7.0, a move to Michu has been the likely trade to make here ahead of Swansea’s fixtures, though he has since been fit to play in tomorrow night’s match with Reading. Liverpool new boy Joe Allen has lost over 30,000 Fantasy backers already, while at the back, Fabricio Coloccini and Jose Enrique’s weekend absences has seen almost 17,000 and 16,000 move on the pair already.

You should rarely ever rotate your high priced defenders, especially as Lescott is a decent set piece threat.

Lot's of people saying they are getting Rooney even though they really want RVP because getting RVP would involve a hit.. 😕

If you want RVP take the hit, what's 4pts now for a season keeper who you obviously think will outscore Rooney anyway?

Or wait one week and don't take a hit. There are plenty of other options and if you have a decent team already, it may it be worth it short term.

So you miss a few points. If you take a hit, he has to score at least 2 for it to be worth it and that's provided the player you transferred out doesn't score.

I would argue he has to contribute more than 4 pts over the course that player remains on your team vs. the player transferred out.

This excludes any potential uses for $$$ saved / spent on others

If I have Torres now and he contributes 2-2-2-2-2 over the next 5 GW's then he has contributed 10 pts over that period.

If I instead transfer (via a hit) to Adebayor and he contributes 2-2-6-2-6 over the next 5 GW's then he contributes 18 pts (-4 for the hit) = 14pts

Then the hit was worth it. It doesnt matter what they do in the first GW

    Looking to ship out Mata.

    Do I switch for
    a) Yaya
    b) Nasri
    c)Kagawa

Either will give me the money for Torres -> RVP, if he seems good value after assessing the Fulham game.

Currently no United cover, Tevez up front for Citeh.

Good shout. Itchy feet over my 3 DGWers though.
Taking him out this week would have given me the option to put RVP in for Torres next week, but his pricetag is offputting, so may stick to the original plan of Rooney for United attacking cover (to be reviewed when the time comes).

Makes me wish RVP buggered off to Italy.

I'd doing Mata out for Kagawa

I think he looked entirely different to the other Utd 'AMC's yesterday, and that should be enough to keep him in the team for a while IMHO.

My concern with Kagawa is that he might be an assisting assist player, distributing to Valencia or Rooney to play the killer ball.

Might hold out another week and see what SAF does with him if RVP and Fatty start together and get rid of Cashley at the back.

Would be grateful for any advice here:

I have Rafael and Marveaux as well as 5 DGWers. I have done OK this week (51 with auto-sub) but heading for a crash, obviously. Is there any chance that Rafa and Marv play in the next two weeks or should I view them as dead weight?

My fear was a change of system for (difficult) away games... considering others though who have good runs of fixtures.

Wildcard yes, but an extremely well thought out WC, as it isn't just based on players but tactics too, especially Laudrups alterations at Swansea. I also think if you have 3 chelsea players left over from GW1 thats its not a bad idea to play your WC, even though so many discourage it. This way there are no limitations and you have already seen where players rank in their managers minds.

I stupidly overlooked Swansea's favourable opening run of fixtures and have no cover in my team. I've decided to get in a midfielder for GW2 - is Michu the obvious choice, or could Dyer or even Routledge potentially be better value, as they play further forward and are no longer competing with Sinclair?

All are good options are could easily score big. I think Michu is the better option, partially because I have him but also because I think he's a better quality player than the other two.

Doesn't Michu play behind Graham, so I think he is more forward than both. Routledge is an interesting differential.

If you are taking a hit, I would go for two swansea players. Never mind the result itself against QPR. The way in which they were set up tactically was masterful in itself, I love the idea of De Guzman sitting deep with Britton and Michu, Dyer, Routledge and Graham ahead of him. Especially with the wingers now playing that bit narrower when they attack, as they give Swansea speed through the middle something they never had in Siggy or Graham last season.

To me it does also, it was an unfortunate injury to Dawson but he was a great defender and it's hard to see him losing that much quality with his time out.

    My front 8 is:

Pienaar - Santi Cazorla - Mata - McClean - Michu

    Graham - Tevez - Torres

with no money in the bank.

The best way to get Man U and Spurs coverage is to do Mata -> Kagawa and Torres -> Adebayor, then I'll have 1.5 spare to do McClean -> HBA/ Yaya.

Which Chelsea player should I transfer out this week with my free transfer, or should I save it and get rid of them both next week?

I've got almost identical front 8 apart from McLean (I have Yaya). I'm holding both transfers as I like the team. Then transfer 2 Chelsea players for the blank game week.

Can I please get help. I currently only have DDG for United cover. Which of the following options would you go with:

    A. Mata to Kagawa

    B. Torres to Rooney or RVP. I would also have to transfer Pienaar to a 4.5 mid to afford this option and so take a 4 point hit.

    C. Neither and hope United dont do much against Fulham.

Don't fret about United cover, they are still setting and prices won't go ape very quickly. Mata is a better point option for GW2 than Kagawa IMO. Save the transfer and reassess after next week.

Swans bandwagon is so knee jerk, the blank week for Ski and a nice run of fixtures makes Swans tempting, but don't think they are going to be world beaters based on GW1.

      All in all. Everton defender.

What was that I said about knee jerk reactions.

Not really a knee jerk at all. Swans had a solid defence last year. Chelsea was far from strong and they have a blank. It also allows me bring in RVP.

Everton could be a good call.

    Friedel
    Zabaleta / Ivanovic / Clyne
    Bale (v) / Cazorla / Michu / N'Zogbia
    Rooney (c) / Tevez / Graham

Bench: Federici / Noble / Fabio / Hangeland

Cost me 4 points but got Michu (before price rise) and Rooney (long term) for 2 Chelsea players so figured it's worth it. Thoughts? Should do well this week right?

Learn from last season, he says. No unnecessary hits this time, he says. Play the smart, patient game, he says. What's that? There's an outside chance of Adebayor playing 10 minutes for Spurs this weekend? Well worth a hit - bang! Done.
